http://green.autoblog.com/2014/02/13/honda-odyssey-hybrid-under-consideration-japan-not-us/

The idea of a hybrid minivan is not new, at least in Japan. Toyota sells the Estima - the world's first hybrid minivan, it has been available since 2001 - and the Aphard hybrids there. The US is not immune to the dream - in 2011, Chrysler said it was going to make a hybrid minivan in 2013 (didn't happen) - but there has never been a gas-electric minivan sold from a major automaker in the US. And, despite new rumors of a Honda Odyssey hybrid for Japan, the chances that the US will get one in the near future remain roughly at zero.

A new report says Honda is considering a hybrid version of the fifth-generation Odyssey in Japan, and such a gas-electric powertrain could reduce fuel use by up to 50 percent. Honda powertrain assistant large project leader Takashi Shinchi told CarAdvice that the hybrid (not a plug-in version) is "under consideration," given the hybrid minivan competition in Japan.

Such consideration is not happening in the US, at least not in any serious way. Sage Marie, senior manager of public relations for Honda North America, told AutoblogGreen, "The only thing the Japanese Odyssey and the US Odyssey have in common is the name. There are no current plans for a US Odyssey hybrid, but I will tell you that over time you can expect to see broader application of our industry-leading two motor hybrid system."

The standard, gas-powered 2014 Odyssey gets 22 miles per gallon, combined (19 city and 28 highway).

"Over time you can expect to see broader application of our two motor hybrid system" - Sage Marie

Car review: Honda City i-DTEC

http://www.dnaindia.com/money/review-car-review-honda-city-i-dtec-1961835

Honda is looking at covering lost ground with the introduction of its Honda City Diesel. With this car, it’s not just about a diesel offering, but about raising the game to a whole new level.

When Honda introduced the City in 1998, the car went on to become the bestseller in its segment and more importantly it set the standard for midsize sedan customers. Competitors pitted their products against the City but couldn’t quite match up to it. A chink in the City’s armour was the lack of a diesel option, and when petrol prices started to spiral skywards, diesel engined versions of the competition made further inroads and the City found itself losing its position as a segment leader. Honda knew the answer was a diesel heart and with the 4th generation version, the company has finally fitted in the 1.5 i-DTEC under the hood.

It’s clear that Honda is taking the fight straight to the competition and not settling for a high-headed strategy. Everything about the new car has its roots in what customers have come to expect from a vehicle of this class and by catering to all these needs, Honda has indeed ushered in a new level on the playing field. Starting with the styling, the car is more of an evolution of the previous model and while you can see similarities, rest assured for this is an all new car from ground up. Dominating details on the exterior include the large chrome bar across the grill, the slimmer and longer headlights, an aggressive looking front bumper, and a nice contoured hood. The rear has also received ample changes including the taillights and a dash of chrome. Overall, the car looks more mature than its predecessor yet retains a glint of a sporty attitude that works well enough to classify the new City as a rather handsome car.

The interiors are where you find a greater amount of change and you will be hard-pressed to think you are sitting in a midsize sedan. Honda’s ‘man maximum, machine minimum’ mantra can be experienced first-hand in the cabin of the new City. The car now measures 4440mm in length, 1695mm in width and 1495mm in height. While these dimensions are almost identical to the outgoing model, the new car’s wheelbase has been increased by 50mm to 2600mm which has led to freeing up a lot of space inside resulting in exceptional seating space for five. While this has been a virtue of the City since its 2nd generation model, the 4th generation definitely takes it up a notch.  In terms of materials, the car comes packed with goodies including a start/stop button, high end audio system with 8 speakers, a touchscreen air-conditioning control system, steering mounted controls, keyless entry, a sun roof, rear air-conditioning vents, rear view camera and an elaborate instrument cluster that also lights up based on your driving habits. As far as materials that comprise the interiors are concerned, they are top notch and seem to belong to a car that is at least a segment higher if not two.

Powering the diesel version of the Honda City is the 1498cc, four cylinder, DOHC i-DTEC diesel mill, which incidentally is the same unit that Honda offers on the Amaze compact sedan, albeit for the fact that in the City it is mated to a 6-speed transmission. Capable of making 100PS @3600rpm and 200 Nm @1750rpm, the engine offers a refined drive and power is delivered in a linear fashion and as per our tests, the City is capable of going from 0-100 km/h in 14.06 seconds, while doing the 0-60km/h sprint in 5.96 seconds which is rather decent and you are never really left wanting. The 6-speed transmission is a dream as well and typically Honda in the manner in which it slots into gear. While a bit of the diesel noise does creep into the cabin, the car comes across as a refined machine that is an absolute blast to drive without having to worry about the fuel bill for our test car delivered a rather decent 16.1 kmpl in the city and a still commendable figure of 22.6 on the highway. While Honda claims an ARAI tested 26 kmpl, the car still manages to deliver a rather respectable mileage under real world conditions.

Being a 3rd generation Honda owner myself, I found the new car’s on road mannerisms to be rather similar. There is a slight change in the way the car drives and this might have to do with the longer wheelbase, but overall, the ride quality and handling, even under some spirited jaunts, remain a strong point of the City’s character. In fact it takes quite a bit to get this car to lose its bearing and I highly doubt any owner will really reach that threshold under normal circumstances. The set up feels just right as you cruise along open roads and the car soaks in most road adulations. Get on the twisties and you can swing this car around bends without having to deal with a handful-a feature I thoroughly enjoyed while tacking the Lavasa ghat. It is very easy to get carried away behind the wheel of the City i-DTEC and as you learn to keep it well within its powerband you can really get the car to respond in a manner that is bound to liven you up a little!

Honda has worked hard to deal with low ground clearance issues that have plagued earlier models, and while the new car also maintains a 165mm ground clearance the underbody is actually contoured in a manner to give you a high point right in the center in order to avoid bottoming out while tackling speed breakers. It is a thoughtful approach to an otherwise cringing problem and the best part is that it works to a great extent, and it just goes to show how much attention Honda has paid to customer feedback and incorporated it on their latest offering.

Packed with all the right stuff and priced rather aggressively, the new City is no longer going to be a niche player in the market. Armed with a petrol, diesel and an automatic version, Honda is looking at a larger market segment as well as targeting B and C category towns. No doubt it is the diesel that will drive the City back to a leadership position and there is no arguing the fact that with the new City, Honda has raised the bar like never before and has established a new standard amongst midsize sedans.

Honda, Acura dependability ratings improve

http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/business/2014/02/12/honda-acura-dependability.html

Honda and Acura drivers say their vehicles are more dependable than did owners surveyed a year earlier, giving the Ohio-made brands high marks while many other automakers received bad news.

The annual survey of owners of 3-year-old vehicles of all brands, conducted by J.D. Power and Associates last fall, found that overall maintenance problems increased from the year-earlier poll. It’s the first time that has happened since 1998. Engines and transmissions accounted for a large share of the repairs.

“Automakers need to make a compromise in their powertrains between fuel economy and performance,” said David Sargent, vice president of global automotive at J.D. Power. The companies “are trying to wring every last 0.01 mpg out of vehicles, but there is a trade-off.”

The trade-off is that the engines and transmissions, particularly in four-cylinder vehicles, are more likely to hesitate and stumble than in the past, he said.

Looking at the average of all models in the 2011 model year, drivers reported 133 problems per 100 vehicles, up from 126 in the previous year.

Acura, Honda’s luxury brand, had 109, down from 120. The Honda brand had 114, down from 119.

“They bucked the trend,” Sargent said.

The time frame also might help Honda. Since the 2011 model year, the company has introduced new engines and transmissions for almost its entire line, including its flagship Accord. The performance of those vehicles will show up in the next few years of this survey.

“Quality, reliability and dependability have always been hallmarks for Honda, and we continually strive to improve in those areas, as evidenced by four straight years of improvement,” Art St. Cyr, vice president of planning and logistics for American Honda, said in an email.

“These (survey) results are the latest affirmation of our attention to the details that make our vehicles so popular with our customers.”

Lexus had the survey’s best showing, with 68 problems per 100 vehicles, down from 71.

Next, in order, were Mercedes-Benz, 104; Cadillac, 107; Acura, 109; Buick, 112; and, in a three-way tie at 114, Honda, Lincoln and Toyota.

At the bottom were Land Rover, 179; Dodge, 181; and Mini, 185.

The survey is one of several by J.D. Power that look at the quality, reliability and appeal of vehicles. This is different from the company’s initial-quality survey, which looks at vehicles in the first 90 days of ownership.

Honda to add 50 jobs, invest nearly $72 million at its Alabama plant

http://www.al.com/business/index.ssf/2014/02/honda_to_add_50_jobs_invest_ne.html

Honda plans to add 50 production jobs and invest $71.8 million at its Talladega County plant, the latest in a string of new projects for the Japanese automaker's Alabama operations.
The Talladega County Commission tonight approved nearly $3.4 million in tax abatements for the project, which is related to the production of drivetrain components. Construction, equipment installation and testing are expected to be complete next year.

The drivetrain components are part of Honda's "Earth Dreams Technology" program, which is focused on enhancing the fuel economy and performance of Honda's Alabama products, said Ted Pratt, a spokesman for the Lincoln plant.

The value of the abatements, for non-education taxes, is $187,000 a year for 10 years. The abatements also include $1.5 million in taxes related to construction costs.

The plant employs more than 4,000 people and represents a total investment of more than $2 billion. In the last three years alone, the company has added more than 450 jobs and spent more than $508 million at the Alabama operations.

A portion of that was tied to the addition of the Acura MDX SUV to the assembly lines. It is the first vehicle the plant has produced for Honda's luxury brand.

Workers in Lincoln also build Honda's Odyssey minivan, Pilot SUV, Ridgeline pickup and the V-6 engines that power them.

"This latest expansion at Honda is proof that Alabama continues to be a great place for automotive manufacturing companies to be successful," Gov. Robert Bentley said in a prepared statement.

Honda builds most top safety-rated models in U.S.

TORRANCE, Calif. — Honda has more top safety-rated vehicles made in America than any other automaker, the company said yesterday.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said that the 2014 models of the Accord sedan and coupe, the Civic sedan and the Odyssey earned “Top Safety Pick Plus” ratings.

The 2014 Civic coupe earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating.

The automaker’s Acura RLX and MDX also earned top ratings, and the Acura TL joined the Civic coupe in its safety-rating category.

To earn a “Top Safety Pick” rating requires good performance in the institute’s moderate-overlap front, side, roof-strength and head-restraint tests and good or acceptable performance in the small-overlap front test. For the top accolade, those criteria must be met plus at least a basic rating for front crash prevention.

Honda zooms to third spot in domestic car market

Honda Cars India has moved upwards to grab the position of India’s third largest car brand after Maruti and Hyundai from 6 position a year ago, riding on the success of its two new models -- diesel powered compact sedan and the mid-size sedan Honda City.

It clocked total sales of 100,495 units during first 10 months of this fiscal as against 56,713 units in a year-ago period. Honda was the only player to hit six digit sales during the period after Maruti (719,842 units) and Hyundai (310,864 units) and total domestic sales surpassed volumes of Tata, Toyota and Ford. Its compact sedan Amaze, launched in April 2013, has been sustaining the sales momentum in the entry level sedan category that had an unchallenged ruler Maruti Swift Dzire. Amaze proved to be not only a gamer changer for Honda, but also created some excitement in the segment as more players are queuing up to roll out new models.

The other model that has received unprecedented response is new Honda City, which regained its top slot in the mid-size sedan segment in January after losing to Hyundai Verna two years ago. City sold 7,184 units, while the total category volumes stood at 15,858 units, including 3,803 units of Verna.

While Honda hopes to sustain the momentum, it will further strengthen the portfolio with two more models next fiscal – a 7-seat MPV Mobilio and the new Jazz, a premium hatchback.

Refreshing or Revolting: 2015 Honda Fit

http://wot.motortrend.com/1402_refreshing_or_revolting_2015_honda_fit.html

Famous for its innovative flat-folding “magic” rear seat, the Honda Fit has been a practical choice in the compact hatchback segment. Riding on a new chassis, the redesigned 2015 Honda Fit hatchback is shorter than the outgoing model, while riding on a longer wheelbase contributing to more passenger room, though cargo room shrinks slightly. While the Fit’s dimensions have been revamped, styling has been updated too. Here is look at the changes to the 2015 Honda Fit’s styling. Up front, the large round headlights in triangular housings have been replaced with sleeker elements, while the revamped grille shape is influenced by the Civic and Accord. Flanked by round foglights, the lower air intake is now bolder with a trapezoidal shape and black lower lip.

Along the side, crisper body lines give the 2015 Fit a more wedge-like shape. Starting just aft of the front wheel, the deeper upper body line curves up sharply, bisecting the door handles before running into the taillights. The lower body line is also more pronounced. For 2015, 16-inch alloy wheels replace 15-inch wheels. The greenhouse line below the front quarter window now angles down before angling up at the front of the front door window.

In back, the taillights now extend up the hatch to frame the rear window. A silver trim piece replaces the black panel at the base of the outgoing model’s rear window. The corners of the rear bumper feature a deep trapezoidal insert.

Inside, the basic steering wheel design remains, while the controls are now arranged in a circular shape. The triple gauge cluster remains, but the outside gauges are no longer angled in. The revamped dashboard’s center HVAC vents are offset toward the driver, and the HVAC controls have been moved below the infotainment screen, where before they were located on the upper left side of the center stack.

Is the 2015 Honda Fit’s styling refreshing or revolting compared to the outgoing model? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Last week, we took a look at the redesigned 2015 Subaru Legacy sedan, which received mixed reviews. Capamotortrend liked the new design: “Subaru has done no wrong here. Conservative styling overall with refreshing design touches here and there.” Icuwit4iiii agreed: “Refreshing!!!! I've always thought the Legacy looked ugly until now.”

SamJoe31 thought it was ugly: “Another huge disappointment from Subaru. The ugly front looks like a 2015 Hyundai Genesis.” Drfats agreed: “Better looking than what it replaces but still revolting.” While j3ff gave it back a backhanded compliment: “Well it's refreshing in the same way that Gollum is more refreshing than an Orc.”

Honda’s Accord Beat Camry as Top U.S. Car in Individual Sales

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-02-20/honda-says-accord-beat-camry-as-top-u-s-car-in-individual-sales.html

Honda Motor Co. (7267) said its Accord was the best-selling car to U.S. individual customers in 2013, surpassing Toyota Motor Corp. (7203)’s Camry, the leader in total volume to retail and fleet buyers for a 12th consecutive year.

Americans bought 360,089 Accords last year, Honda said in a statement yesterday, citing registration data from IHS Automotive’s Polk unit. Camry retail sales were 342,007 out of 408,484 total deliveries for the sedan, said Amanda Rice, a Toyota spokeswoman.

Honda’s strategy to concentrate on retail sales is paying off, as they aid resale values and typically are more profitable than those to fleets. Sales to individuals accounted for more than 98 percent of Accord’s U.S. volume last year, compared with about 84 percent for the Camry. U.S. automakers generally rely on fleets for a quarter or more of sales.

“Our focus on retail sales to individual buyers has a direct correlation to the high resale value of Honda products,” John Mendel, Honda’s U.S. executive vice president, said in the statement.

Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, and Tokyo-based Honda have vied for U.S. car sales leadership since the 1980s. Both are under pressure to hold volume leads in those segments as new models from General Motors Co. (GM), Ford Motor Co. and South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co. gain ground.

The Accord had the highest residual value among mid-size cars in 2013, according to ALG, the Santa Barbara, California-based company that calculates such figures. The Honda model also led Kelley Blue Book’s resale value awards for mid-size cars. Camry isn’t in the top three of either ranking.

Honda advanced 1.4 percent as of 10:08 a.m. in Tokyo trading, compared with a 2 percent gain of the Nikkei 225 Stock Average. The stock has declined 15 percent this year.

Adding to the mix a black fuel cap, black sun visors on the side windows, extra shiny chrome around the side windows, darkened rear lights, a chromed license plate frame, an extra exhaust pipe, and some sorta diffuser on the back end of the body kit.

The Honda Spirior is made in China by the Dongfeng-Honda joint venture. Price starts at 215.800 yuan and ends at 255.800 yuan. Engines: 2.0 and 2.4 petrol four-cylinders. Sadly we don’t see many modified Spiriors around, this froggy is only the second example after a matte light blue white car we saw elsewhere in town.

2015 Honda Fit Mexico Production Started

http://www.hybridcars.com/2015-honda-fit-mexico-production-started/

Honda is expanding its manufacturing operations in North America with the production start of the redesigned 2015 Honda Fit at a new, technologically-advanced automobile plant of Honda de Mexico, S.A. de C.V. (HDM).

The new plant in North America increases Honda’s ability to meet customer demand for fuel-efficient subcompact models from within the region.

Honda explained the start-up of the Celaya Plant increases Honda’s annual automobile production capacity in North America to approximately 1.92 million units. In 2013, more than 90 percent of the Honda and Acura automobiles sold in the U.S. were produced in North America; this is expected by Honda to exceed 95 percent when the Celaya plant reaches full capacity.

Located in Celaya, Guanajuato, Honda added the US$800 million plant began production less than two years after construction started in early 2012, and will employ 3,200 associates with an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles and engines when it reaches full production later this year.

In addition to the 2015 Honda Fit, the plant will begin production late this year of an all-new compact SUV, the Vezel.

“Our new plant in Mexico is based on the Honda Company Principle of maintaining a global viewpoint to supply products of the highest quality, yet at a reasonable price, for worldwide customer satisfaction,” said Takanobu Ito, president & CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. “In Celaya, we can see these core values in action, with a commitment to the highest quality and efficiency and a focus on creating joy for our customers.”

Honda said the Celaya plant is designed exclusively for the production of subcompact vehicles and features a number of Honda’s most advanced manufacturing technologies in the world, including several that were first introduced last year at Honda’s new Yorii Plant in Japan, to increase quality and efficiency and reduce the plant’s environmental footprint.

Honda stated these key technologies include:

A high-speed servo stamping press and adoption of a high-speed die change process that increases the efficiency of the stamping process by approximately 40%.
An all-new, highly efficient general welder system, which joins the vehicle body panels together, achieves a major reduction in the number of welding robots, while increasing the number of weld points for higher quality and efficiency.
A new 3-coat/2-bake, water-based painting process (replacing the traditional 4-coat/3-bake process) to reduce energy consumption during the painting process by approximately 40%, while enhancing paint finish quality.
A highly efficient production line intended to reduce the time and space for assembly processes, that includes a reduction in heavy-lifting processes for improved associate ergonomics, an increase of in-plant sub-assembly processes and new strategies that ensure both more efficient and more precise vehicle assembly.
LED lighting was installed throughout the plant and vehicle yard to reduce energy usage.

The Celaya Auto Plant is Honda de Mexico’s second auto plant. The first plant, located near Guadalajara, was established in El Salto, Jalisco in 1995.

Set to go on sale in the U.S. this spring, Honda unveiled the 2015 Fit for the U.S. market at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit last month.

Honda opens second plant in Mexico

Honda Motor’s President and CEO Takanobu Ito (right) sits next to Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto as they watch ASIMO robot entertains the crowd during the opening of Honda’s new automobile plant in a suburb of Celaya, Guanajuato.

CELAYA: Honda unveiled a second factory in Mexico on Friday, seeking to capitalise on the nation’s rising power in the sector and strengthen the Japanese car giant’s foothold in North America.

The $800m plant in Celaya, in the central state of Guanajuato, will churn out 200,000 units per year, contributing to Mexico’s race to beat Canada and Japan as top car exporter to the United States.

For Honda, producing the Honda Fit hatchback and a yet-to-be-named compact-sport utility vehicle in Mexico will allow the company to expand its presence in the Mexican and US markets.

Latin America’s second-biggest economy has become an increasingly favoured destination for car makers thanks to its lower wages, skilled workforce and participation in a raft of free-trade pacts.

“We have great expectations for growth in the US market as well as the Mexican market,” Honda chief executive Takanobu Ito told reporters, adding that Mexico has good growth potential for small cars. “In addition to having the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Mexico has free-trade deals with several regions in the world, including Japan and Europe,” he said.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto was on hand to unveil the sprawling factory — which will have 3,200 workers — alongside state officials and Honda executives, including Ito.

Mexico is now the world’s eighth-biggest car maker and the number four exporter after Germany, South Korea and Japan, according to industry figures.

“I am pleased to be here for the inauguration of this Honda factory, which recognises that we are creating the optimal conditions to attract investments and to generate economic growth in our country,” Pena Nieto said.

Ironically, the investments of Japanese car makers in Mexico is helping the Latin American country gain ground on Japan’s auto exports to the United States.

Mexico is on pace to overtake Japan for second place this year, exporting 1.69 million units to its norther neighbor, almost 200,000 more than the Asian nation, according to IHS Automotive consultancy. In 2015, Mexico will outpace Canada with 1.9 million units sold in the US, IHS estimates.

IHS auto analyst Guido Vildozo said Honda’s focus on Mexico — where the firm is also building a $470m transmissions plant at the same Celaya site, adding another 1,500 jobs — was “a combination of things.”

Honda opened its first factory in the western state of Jalisco in the 1980s to produce motorcycles and later cars.

“People forget that Mexican labour is highly qualified. Mexico has been building for competitive markets in the United States and Europe for years,” Vildozo said.

US, European and Asian auto-makers have also flocked to Mexico. The new Honda plant is near a Mazda factory that began operations last month, attracting auto part makers that are turning Guanajuato into an industry hub.

Audi, the top-of-the-range company owned by German auto giant Volkswagen, is building a factory in the state of Puebla that will produce 150,000 cars per year when it opens in 2016. AFP

Top 10: Which vehicles will last 200,000 miles?

Only one car makes the list, Honda's Accord. The rest are pickups and SUVs

If you want to own a vehicle that you can drive into the ground -- and then wonder why it refuses to die -- then maybe you should be driving a big truck or SUV.

That seems to be the conclusion of a study from a website that aggregates millions of used-car sales listings around the country. ISeeCars.com went looking for listings of vehicles with at least 200,000 miles on the odometer. It says it analyzed 30 million listings from 1981 to 2010.

Conclusion: In the search for the top 12 vehicles that have clocked at least 200,000 miles, only one was a car. In last place, in a three-way tie, came the Honda Accord. The rest of the list has nothing but trucks -- pickups or SUVs.

The top two vehicles showing the biggest percentage are two bitter rivals, the heavy-duty -- and gas-guzzling -- pickups from Ford and Chevrolet. The Ford F-250 Super Duty came in first. Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD came in second.

After that came three big SUVs: Chevy Suburban, Toyota 4Runner and Ford Expedition. For long-lasting vehicles, General Motors was the big winner. Seven of the Top 12 vehicles are from GM. ISeeCars.com notes, too, that no European models make the list and speculates that the old ones become more valuable for spare parts as they near retirement.

The vehicles and the percentage of them showing at least 200,000 miles

1. Ford F-250 Super Duty, 4.3%

2. Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, 3.6%

3. Chevrolet Suburban, 3.6%

4. Toyota 4Runner, 3.5%

5. Ford Expedition, 3%

6. GMC Sierra 2500HD, 2.7%

7. Chevrolet Tahoe, 2.1%

8. GMC Yukon XL, 1.9%

9. Toyota Sequoia. 1.7%

10. GMC Sierra 1500, 1.6%

11. GMC Yukon, 1.6%

12. Honda Accord, 1.6%

After 2015 Honda Fit production in Celaya, Honda begins Amaze production in Tapukara Plant, India

Honda manufacturing operations in North America last week saw a new boost with production start at new Celaya plant, Mexico. 2015 Honda Fit ( Honda Jazz in India) production is underway to meet customer demand for fuel-efficient subcompact models here. Enrique Pena Nieto, president of Mexico, and Takanobu Ito, president & CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. were in attendance.

Celaya Plant operations increases Honda’s annual automobile production capacity in North America to approximately 1.92 million units. More than 90% of Honda and Acura automobiles sold in the U.S. in 2013 were produced in North America. this number will be in excess of 95% when Celaya plant reaches full production capacity.

The US $800 million plant began production less than two years after construction started in early 2012 and will provide employment to 3,200 associates with an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles and engines when it reaches full production later in 2014. Apart from, 2015 Honda Fit, production of an all-new compact SUV will begin here later in 2014. A new $470 million transmission plant’s construction is underway at the same site in Celaya, and is expected to begin continuously variable transmissions (CVT) production in the second half of 2015, with added employment to about 1,500 associates. Celaya Auto Plant is Honda de Mexico’s 2nd auto plant. The first is located near Guadalajara and was established in El Salto, Jalisco in 1995.

“Our new plant in Mexico is based on the Honda Company Principle of maintaining a global viewpoint to supply products of the highest quality, yet at a reasonable price, for worldwide customer satisfaction,” said Ito. “In Celaya, we can see these core values in action, with a commitment to the highest quality and efficiency and a focus on creating joy for our customers.”

Honda Cars India Tapukara Plant is located in Tapukara Industrial Area, Distt. Alwar, Rajasthan, and is spread over an area of 450 acres. With a cumulative investment of Rs 3526 crores, Tapukara plant currently employs about more than 3200 associates. Plant production capacity now stands at 1,20,000 units /annum. Tapukara plant, HCIL’s 2nd plant began Phase I operations in September 2008 with Press Shop and Power Train Unit for engine components.

Production of cars in the 2nd plant from today augments HCIL’s total installed production capacity to 240,000 units/ annum in India. During the current fiscal year 2013-14, HCILhas crossed 1 lakh unit sales for the first time in a financial year having sold 101,370 units in Apr’13– Jan 14 period to register 78% sales growth over same period last year, anew landmark for HCIL.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, Managing Officer, Honda Motor Co. Ltd., Japan and Representative of Development, Purchasing and Production in Asia & Oceania Region said, “India is an important market for Honda and with the beginning of car production at Tapukara plant, we are advancing our commitment to expand Honda’s business in India. We are thankful to the Government of Rajasthan for extending all the support to participate in the industrialization of the state.” “Through our products and operations, our goal is to make Honda a company that society wants to exist,” he added.

Mr Hironori Kanayama, President & CEO, Honda Cars India Ltd. said, “The beginning of car production from our 2nd plant is a significant milestone for HCIL. With overwhelming response to our current models like Honda Amaze & all-new City and promising future line-up, we are ready to cater to the strong demand for Honda cars from our customers in India.”

Really? This Is America's Most Dependable Automotive Brand?

http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2014/02/23/really-this-is-americas-most-dependable-automotive.aspx

The U.S. auto industry announced in 2013 that it was back in full force with unit sales increasing to 15.6 million, up better than 7% from 2012, and crossing the 15 million mark for the first time since 2007.

A combination of an improving economy, lower unemployment rates, and historically low lending rates have encouraged consumers to jump into what could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase their dream car at a very attractive lending rate.

Needless to say, a lot of thought and effort goes into which car a consumer will purchase. Consumers often look at fuel economy, read reviews online, test drive the vehicle (perhaps a number of times), ask for advice from family and friends, and also plot out how much they're willing to spend on their vehicle over the life of a loan if they choose to finance it.

Source: Robert Couse-Baker, Flickr.

One thing that consumers often overlook, though, is the dependability of the vehicle they're considering buying. For a new car buyer, the expectation is that they'll encounter few maintenance problems for the first couple of years, and if they do, that their warranty will cover those snafus. For a used car purchaser, dependability is everything since there's rarely any warranty attached to a used car purchase.

Not only is dependability important for your pocketbook in that more dependable vehicles will cost less to maintain, but it's also the silent advertiser for a brand. As J.D. Power & Associates has demonstrated through its research, 56% of car owners who report having no problems return to the same brand, while 42% who reported three or more problems kept their same brand of vehicle with their next purchase. Therefore, vehicle dependability can, at least partially, help us predict which brands' sales may move higher and which brands may struggle based on this vehicle dependability-brand loyalty correlation.

America's five most dependable automotive brands

To that end I turn to J.D. Power & Associates annual vehicle dependability study for 2014. The study itself looks at three-year-old models from a number of brands (i.e., all 2011 models) and asks consumers if they experienced one or more of 202 noted problems. J.D. Power then ranks those car brands from top to bottom based on how many problems were reported per 100 vehicles, commonly known as its PP100 metric. Dependability is especially important this year when you consider that J.D. Power's study uncovered the first rise in reported problems, especially engine and transmission problems, since 1998!

Let's have a look at the five top automotive brands according to J.D. Power's study and then note what brands really stood out, as well as which brands faltered.

As a warning, you may be shocked to discover which brand decisively took the No. 1 spot in vehicle dependability!

No. 5: Buick (112 problems per 100 vehicles)
Rising from the sixth spot into the top five this year is Buick, owned by General Motors (NYSE: GM  ) which had consumers report just 112 problems per 100 vehicles as opposed to 118 PP100 in last year's study from J.D. Power. The real standout for Buick was the Lucerne which took top honors in the large car category, besting Toyota's (NYSE: TM  ) Avalon and Ford's (NYSE: F  ) Taurus. As Foolish auto analyst John Rosevear notes, Buick is doing a really nice job transitioning into a global brand.

No. 4: Acura (109 problems per 100 vehicles)
Honda Motors'  (NYSE: HMC  )  Acura was another big mover in 2014, vaulting higher by four spots to fourth place from eighth with 109 PP100 reported compared to 120 PP100 last year. Like GM's Buick, Acura only took top honors in one category (compact premium CUV) with its RDX, but it also claimed a tie for the third-highest rating in the midsize premium CUV category with the Mercedes-Benz M-class. Honda and Acura are relatively synonymous with economical but dependable vehicles in the U.S., making this ranking not too surprising.

2011 Cadillac CTS-V, Source: IFCAR, Wikimedia Commons.

No. 3: Cadillac (107 problems per 100 vehicles)
Chalk up another victory for General Motors which can claim its second top-five brand for dependability in Cadillac. Year over year, Cadillac surged 11 spots to No. 3, with vehicle owners reporting only 107 PP100 compared to 128 PP100 last year. This huge jump came in only second to Jaguar which vaulted 13 spots higher in J.D. Power's rankings. Cadillac took home the top honors for its large premium CUV, the Escalade, as well as large premium car, the DTS, which tied for the top spot with the Lexus LS. Cadillac has certainly done its best to focus its efforts on a slightly younger crowd, and these improved dependability ratings should help.

No. 2: Mercedes-Benz (104 problems per 100 vehicles)
Jumping three spots in 2014 to No. 2 with only 104 PP100 compared to 115 PP100 reported in the prior year is Daimler's (NASDAQOTH: DDAIF  ) Mercedes-Benz. What's particularly interesting here is that Mercedes-Benz didn't win any of the 22 vehicle categories as outlined by J.D. Power, but it did place or show in quite a few which speaks to its overall consistency. Mercedes-Benz ranked second in midsize premium car with its E-Class sedan/wagon, second in large premium CUV with its GL-class, second in compact premium CUV with its GLK-class, and tied for third with the Acura MDX in the midsize premium CUV category with its M-class. Simply put, if consumers are going to pay a premium price, they expect premium results, and Mercedes-Benz appears to be delivering on that promise.

And the real shock (at least to me)...

2011 Lexus RX 450, Source: IFCAR, Wikimedia Commons.

No. 1: Lexus (68 problems per 100 vehicles)
I guess it shouldn't be that much of a shock since Toyota-owned Lexus was first in last year's ratings as well, but I recall shortly after I got my license, nearly two decades ago, how I was admonished from buying a Lexus because of their dependability issues. This rating simply confirms how far the brand has come in less than two decades as its PP100 of just 68 is light years ahead of second-place Mercedes-Benz, and even lower than the 71 PP100 that J.D. Power reported last year. Lexus tied its LS for top large premium car with the Cadillac DTS, was the top midsize premium car with the GS, and nabbed both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in compact premium car with the ES and IS, and midsize premium CUV with the RX and GX.

Obviously brands in the top five can be construed as winners, but General Motors, Toyota, and Honda deserve special recognition since they brought home eight, seven, and six, of the top category awards, respectively – that's 21 of 22 categories won by just three companies!

As I stated above, Toyota and Honda generally build no-frill vehicles, choosing instead to focus on improving fuel economy and storage space. The end result for years has been a reliable vehicle that will get the consumer from point A to B with ease, and without too many automotive issues.

The real shock here is the dominance by General Motors' vehicles and the total absence of Ford, save for a runner-up effort in the midsize pickup category with its Ranger. GM is hoping to translate these key wins into strong sales for its recently redesigned trucks, the Silverado and Sierra, which it hopes will give Ford's dominant F-Series a run for its money. Early sales of GM's Silverado have been mixed with winter weather and parts shortages eating into total unit sales, but as Foolish auto guru John Rosevear recently pointed out, it's actually spending fewer days on dealership lots than either of its foes, signaling that GM may indeed be on the up-and-up.

Honda Goes Inside the Civic Tourer, and Everything Else, in Brilliantly Constructed Ad
W+K's 'Inner Beauty' By Tim Nudd

IDEA: You hear it often—it's what's inside that counts. That's especially true for an automaker touting a roomy vehicle, like Honda has with its new Civic Tourer wagon in Europe.

To advertise it, Wieden + Kennedy focused on all kinds of interiors in an amazing 60-second spot called "Inner Beauty." The quirky, charming, exquisitely crafted ad takes the viewer, in a first-person view, zooming across a desert and through all sorts of objects—from a golf ball to a suitcase to the Civic Tourer itself—revealing their curious innards.

The brief to W+K was, "There is an estate hidden inside"—i.e., the Civic Tourer has as much room as an estate vehicle (a big van/station wagon in the U.K.). "We decided it was interesting to focus on the human curiosity of looking inside things," said W+K creative director Scott Dungate, "plus the joy you experience when you're surprised and pleased by what you see."

COPYWRITING: The ad opens with the viewer speeding across a desert floor as Garrison Keillor, the brand's longtime voice in Europe, says: "For those who love the inside as much as the outside, this is for you."

Quickly, the camera travels up to and through a golf ball, camera, wrapped gift (with a robot inside), amplifier, suitcase (containing clothes and a snow globe of San Francisco) and chest of drawers (with mostly socks). At the end, it explores the Civic Tourer's interior, then pulls back to show all the previous items flying into its trunk.

"There," says Keillor. "Aren't you glad you looked?"

There was a lot of debate over which objects to include. "I still wish we'd cut through a rock revealing a fossil and 'crystal cave,' but that was a casualty of the process," said Dungate.

The spot ends with the vehicle name onscreen, followed by the Honda name, "The Power of Dreams" tagline, honda.co.uk URL and #CivicTourer hashtag.

ART DIRECTION/FILMING: The visuals are a mix of live action, stop motion and CGI. "We ended up taking things more surreal, but didn't want to feel the CGI too much," said Dungate. "While the final aesthetic is 'hyper-real,' I think it feels quite fresh as it uses a lot of real textures."

Oscar-nominated Nexus directors Smith & Foulkes, whose Honda work goes back to 2004's Grand Prix-winning "Grrr," filmed the live action in Teruel, Spain, and the stop motion in a studio. They wove in the CGI with help from Time Base Arts.

"Quirky was important," said Dungate. "It needed to be playful, human and warm—which can be difficult with inanimate objects and a 'slicing technique.' "

TALENT: Keillor, 71, brings a warm folksiness. "He adds humility, which is a point of difference in a category full of overclaim," Dungate said. "Perhaps even more useful is, it's good for when you're writing. If you can't imagine him saying it, it's probably not right."

The driver of the car is almost invisible. "I didn't want him in there at all," said Dungate. "But someone had to drive, so I lost that argument."

SOUND: There's no music—it's all sound design, rich and complex. "Sound played a big role in bringing humanity to the objects," Dungate said. "It also plays a massive role in storytelling, setting up what the objects are and the lifestyle story relevant to the audience. Take, for example, the little kid laughing in the camera. Or the sound of the jet going into the suitcase. These all help you get the story of each object really quick, which is important as we move through things quite fast."

MEDIA: The spot broke first in Germany, then in other European markets. It's running for a month in the U.K.

FWD Honda Odyssey Minivan: Check; 1,000+ HP: Check; Burnout: Well, Duh!

For the sheer surprise of seeing a Honda Odyssey light up its front tires like it does in the video below, this was worth a post, backed up by the fact that the car boasts the magic horsepower number of 1,000, all of which are funneled through one axle - whichever way you put it, that's at the wrong end of the car…

As you’d imagine, this minivan is now legal for recreational use in Colorado, but limited in other states, like California where the cops simply don’t pay attention to it, despite it being technically illegal, since there are other minivans with even more horsepower…

The tires are helped in shedding their tread by “a custom built J35 V6 engine with Bisimoto spec Arias Pistons, RR Rods, Porsflow head, supertech valvetrain, GE sleeved block, AEM Infinity EMS, NGK spark plugs, PurOl Oils, Toyo tires, Fifteen52 wheels, Deatchworks 2000cc injectors,” with an air ride suspension system finishing off the look. The exact power figure is claimed to be 1,029 hp and the vehicle itself is “one of the wildest cars ever built at Bismoto.”

Hopefully, the in-built vacuum cleaner handles liquids combined with solids, for those rare moments when its wheels will actually provide forward motion, possibly severely unsettling passengers' lunches. Who knows what will happen when it turns a corner?

Abandoned Car Dealership with Mazdas, Hondas and Saabs Uncovered in Switzerland

For a race of beings who think that they've discovered everything here on earth and are looking into the stars for new findings, there sure seem to be plenty of spaces lost in time like this abandoned auto dealership in Switzerland.

It came into the light, or so to speak, by Reddit poster "eastpa" who shared a handful of photos along with the following words:

"So I found a parking lot full of old abandoned cars today," he said. "There were a bunch of old Mazdas, Hondas and a few Saabs. There were some Mazdas from the 1980's inside the dealership as well, which appeared to be brand-new. From what I understand the building has been abandoned since around 2001. EDIT: The dealership is located in Switzerland."

Very little is known about this ghostly showroom, and the photos don't paint the best possible picture, so we don't know for sure if any of the cars are actually new – the 1980s Mazda 323 GT does look to be in pretty good condition for its age.

Perhaps some of our readers from Switzerland can help us find out more. I did notice in the Mazda photos a "Bowling Universum" sign on an adjacent building, with a quick search on Google Maps Switzerland providing two results, "Bowling Universum 2 GmbH, Industriestrasse, Kriens, Switzerland" and "Bowling Universum D. Studer, Industriestrasse, Dietlikon, Switzerland". However, only the latter a comes up on Street View, and I'm not sure if that's it.

Feel free to poke around, though, and give us a heads up if you discover something.

Improve your weekend with this Honda NSX Concept-GT racing film

We still aren't convinced that the new Acura NSX will ever arrive in the US. After years of "concepts" and previews, it all seems like an elaborate tease put on by Honda to mess with journalists and auto enthusiasts. We're so looking forward to being wrong...

What isn't a joke, though, is the NSX Concept-GT, a wildly awesome racer that runs in Japan's extreme Super GT series. As a sort of welcome to the weekend, Honda has some footage of the NSX racer at Japan's Suzuka Circuit. We're really digging the NSX's aesthetic when driven in anger, and the noise it makes isn't too bad, either.

Scroll down and have a look at the video, and let us know what you think of this NSX racer.

paultan.org/2014/02/28/2014-honda-city-white-drb-autofest/

2014 Honda City – white Grade S car at DRB Autofest

Say hello again to the 2014 Honda City, which was previewed to the press at a media gathering last week. That same black Melaka-assembled unit has since gone on a shopping mall roadshow circuit – done with the Klang Valley, it will be at the East Coast Mall this weekend.

So it was a pleasant surprise to see a white-coloured 2014 City at Honda’s DRB-Hicom Autofest booth. This is the first time we’ve seen the City in another colour other than black. At first glance, it looks similar to the black Grade E unit, with the same 15-inch wheels and 175/65 Goodyear GT3 tyres, but the differences show upon closer inspection.

This white car’s cabin lacks the previously seen push start button and steering audio controls. The trim surrounding the stereo is not in gloss black, and the dials lack chrome surrounds. Even the dial faces are different – this should be the standard meter panel, not the illuminated meter cluster.

It’s obviously a step down from Grade E, so this car should be either a Grade S or S+. What we already know is that Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) will only equip the E and range-topping V grades, and that the full suite of six airbags and 16-inch rims are exclusive to the V. With today’s sighting, we now have a clearer picture of the gulf between S/S+ and E grades.

The DRB-Hicom Autofest 2014 will be running throughout the weekend at the EON Complex in Glenmarie, next to the DRB-Hicom headquarters. All DRB-related brands are there, including Proton, Lotus, Volkswagen, Audi, Honda, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Suzuki, Modenas and Can-Am. We hear that there will be good deals in store, so do check the event out.

Honda Commits to the Expansion of Hybrid Vehicle Offerings in the U.S.

Honda product strategy includes advancement of Earth Dreams™ Technology powertrains, including innovative two-motor hybrid system

Strategy will include changes to existing lineup of environmental vehicles

Honda is reinforcing its commitment to a clear product strategy focused on further advancing fuel-efficient and alternative-fuel vehicle technologies that are better aligned with customer needs and that strengthen the company’s U.S. sales momentum.

Keyed to the continued rollout of a new lineup of Earth Dreams™ Technology engines, transmissions and electro-motive technologies, the strategy will be executed over the next three to four years and will include changes to the Honda lineup of advanced technology environmental vehicles, including the Honda Insight. The U.S. model Insight will be available at Honda dealerships nationwide through the end of the year, with production scheduled to end in summer 2014.

Honda’s hybrid product direction in the U.S. will move forward with greater focus on expanded application of the innovative two-motor hybrid system. The two-motor system was introduced on the 2014 Accord Plug-In Hybrid and powers the EPA-rated 50 mpg city Accord Hybrid, which is the most fuel-efficient rating for a 5-passenger sedan in America.

“No manufacturer has more experience with electromotive technologies than Honda and we are committed to applying our expertise to a wide range of products in the coming years,” said Michael Accavitti, senior vice president of auto operations at American Honda. “Our hybrid vehicle strategy will focus on new models aimed at delivering the class-leading fuel economy and performance our customers’ desire in segments that represent significant growth opportunities.”

The second generation Insight is the most affordable mass-produced hybrid vehicle on the market with a MSRP starting at $18,7251, and an EPA fuel economy ratings of 41/44/42 city/highway/combined2. It was introduced in the spring of 2009 and offered a unique blend of fuel-efficient hybrid performance, 5-door hatchback practicality, top safety ratings and a host of user-friendly features, including the first application of the Honda-exclusive ECO Assist™, a sophisticated feedback system that uses an adaptive color display to indicate overall driving efficiency. Long recognized as an affordable and practical hybrid vehicle choice for customers, the Insight was named a ’Greenest Vehicle’ by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) for four consecutive years and a ’Top Choice’ by Edmunds.com.

Subaru Forester’s roomy rear seats, 35 mpg on the highway and its affordable price make this mini-SUV the top of the line.

Midsized sedan
Honda Accord wins for probably the 1,000th time with a mpg as good as their subcompact car. The Accord’s ride is always above average, but there is a noted reliability issue with the HondaLink infotainment system on the EX-L versions.

Compact car
Subaru returns agains with its Impreza, coming in a sedan and hatchback version with a roomy interior and great fuel economy.

Midsized SUV
Hyundai steps into the top ranks with its seven-passenger Santa Fe that offers a smooth exterior and luxurious ride.

Green car
Larry David would approve–Toyota Prius hold the crown on the best green car again.

Pickup truck
The Ram 1500 edges out over the Chevrolet Silverado due to the Chevy’s reliability issues. Its powerful 5.7-liter V8 and quiet cabin make the Ram 1500 the pickup truck to beat.

Luxury car
The Audi A6 garners the words “impeccable” and “sumptuous” even from Consumer Reports as the diesel-powered V6 Audi with 28 mpg wins the best luxury car of 2014 title.

Sports sedan
The BMW 328i takes the cake with a turbo-charged four-cylinder engine with 28mpg. This year, BMW also releases a diesel version called the 328d which is greatly received.

Minivan
The Honda Odyssey can carry eight people, has “decent” fuel economy and a V6 engine. At its great price, it also has features such as a backup standard as standard.

If you’re looking to purchase a new car or make an upgrade, this list will surely help you narrow things down a little. If you want to go big and green, go for the Consumer Reports best overall car, the luxury electric Tesla Model S. It runs in the $90,000 price range, but the streets as well as Consumer Reports will definitely approve.

Nissan Passes Honda in U.S. Sales

The traditional order among Japanese manufacturers that sell vehicles in America has been Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) in the top spot and Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (NYSE: HMC) in second place. Large model lines and quality reputations have helped each company compete with the Big Three U.S. car companies. The order has been shaken up recently, as Nissan has taken the number two position.

Nissan sold 115,360 cars and light trucks in the United States during February, up 16%. Honda sold 100,405, down 7%. February sales across all manufacturers that sell vehicles in America were flat last month at 1,193,872. This allowed Nissan to bump its market share to 9.7%, up from 8.3% in the same month last year. Sales of Nissan’s Altima rose 11% last month, which put it ahead of the traditional leader, Toyota’s Camry, some signal of how well Nissan is doing.

Ironically, Nissan often does not do as well as Toyota and Honda do in many car quality measurements. In the J.D. Power 2014 Vehicle Dependability Study, Nissan ranked below the industry average in problems per hundred vehicles. Honda and Toyota were each in the top ten. Lexus, the Toyota luxury line, ranked in first place in the J.D. Power study. Honda’s luxury line Acura ranked fourth overall.

One reason for Nissan’s strong February could be its pricing strategy. According to Kelley Blue Book’s New Car Transaction Pricing study for last month, Nissan’s average transaction price was down 2.5% from February of last year to $27,906. Honda’s pricing went the other direction. The research firm reported:

“In particular, Honda is seeing the greatest increase this month, thanks to strong numbers from its Acura brand, including the MDX, which jumped 10 percent in February,” said Karl Brauer, senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book.

Would your investment capital be best-served elsewhere?
What if... instead of worrying about the short-term viability of your current investments... YOUR MONEY was on the front lines of a potentially profitable innovation with long-term staying power? As we speak, Wall Street insiders are eyeing-up shares of an American technology that brought early investors nearly 250% gains last year, and has been described by Business Insider as, "the next trillion dollar industry." This incredible growth story is just getting started.... so click here and discover the investing opportunity you have to see to believe!

Honda’s average transaction price was up by 3.9% compared to February of last year to $28,318. Both Honda and Nissan were below Toyota’s $30,778, which was up 3.1% year-over-year last month. Across the industry, car transaction prices were up 1.9% to $32,160 for the same period. And KBB expressed concern about Nissan’s pricing, compared to the balance of the sector. Commenting about Nissan prices in February compared to January of this year:

“Nissan continues to decline, down 2 percent from last month and nearly 3 percent year-over-year,” said Alec Gutierrez, senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book. “The brand’s top-selling Altima has fallen nearly 4 percent since January 2014, and the Rogue also took a small hit in prices, down 1.3 percent month-over-month. Each of these vehicles participate in fiercely competitive segments which has kept prices in check.

It may be that what Nissan took from Honda in market share, it has paid for in price and probably profit margin.

DRIVEN: 2014 Honda City i-VTEC previewed in Phuket

http://paultan.org/2014/03/05/driven-2014-honda-city-vtec-previewed-phuket/

Small cars are big business. As other industries gnash their teeth over sales declines and predict the end of the world, the automotive players, those with B-segment contenders in particular, are doing rather well. Significantly up last year and, with new entrants late last year and this year, almost certainly more in 2014.

The rules of small cars are fast changing too. Until recently, small meant basic. If you wanted big car features you would (obviously enough) buy a big car. And if you couldn’t afford it, or fit it into your garage, tough.

Enter the 2014 Honda City. It’s not a size thing – this car is as dinky as other, more utilitarian sedans. What it offers is big car equipment and interior space. Not minimalism, but rather downsizing. So is it any good, and more crucially, is it better than the Toyota Vios? We hopped over to Phuket, Thailand to find out.

Perhaps more than others, the new City transcends the imaginary limitations of a B-segmenter. It has stand-out styling, decent (though not quite class-leading) build quality and a long list of equipment (even if most of them are kept for the flagship variant).

Across the range, it has a mildly improved version of Honda’s sweet 120 PS/145 Nm 1.5 litre SOHC i-VTEC engine. Best of all, though, thanks to its early introduction in this region, it’s already riding on the third-generation 2014 Honda Jazz platform, which is a big step-up from the Jazz that’s currently on sale here.

The first-gen Jazz-based 2002 Honda City, along with the original Toyota Vios, were the small sedans that started this B-segment phenomenon, passing invisibly in the early Noughties from small and reliable to small, premium-priced and reliable.

Not only did they quickly establish that people would pay slightly over the odds for badges, but also that they’d queue up to do so. If hot cakes ever need an analogy to illustrate their popularity, either the City or Vios would be a good place to come.

This is an all-new car rather than the 2013 Vios’ predominantly-skin-deep makeover. It gets a whole new look, based on Honda’s latest ‘Exciting H’ design direction and a completely funked-up interior (in the good sense, of course). Visual familiarity next to the outgoing City can’t disguise this new car’s promised excellence.

With four rather than just two model variants, the City becomes capable of sitting across numerous market segments. At the bottom end (the City S and S+) it can finally play forecourt tag with the base Vios and Nissan Almera, but in the upper ranges (the E and V; the latter especially), the equipment gets serious.

Turning back on its previous premium-priced strategy, Honda Malaysia is targeting the ever-popular Vios squarely in its new chiselled face now, while promising a realistic compromise between variant prices and the corresponding kit count. More on this when the full local prices and specifications are announced soon, but expect fireworks.

The Thai-built cars you see in these pictures vary from the Malaysian-assembled ones that you can buy here. The differences are minor, however, and are mostly in our favour. For instance, even the top-spec Thai models have a urethane steering wheel, while ours will be leather-wrapped. Ignore the rear centre lap belt too, as we’ll get proper three-point items.

But if you’ve been following the new City closely since its global debut in India late last year, you’d already know what it has (ESP, six airbags, rear air-con vents and a factory-fitted touch-screen media system in the top models), and what it doesn’t (leather seats, rear disc brakes, projector headlights, LED tail lamps). What we’re here to judge is how it feels to be in and to drive.

First up, the space. This car is massive inside; there’s no other way to describe it. With full freedom of seat movement, there’s a roomy, fairly comfortable driving position with plenty of air around your head, despite the seat being mounted a touch too high for our liking.

Speaking of the front thrones, they fail to escape Honda’s perennial seating issue – excessive lumbar support (too big a bulge on your lower back). It is non-adjustable in the City, forcing you to sit more upright than is ideal. The latest Vios’ much-improved front seats put these to absolute shame.

That’s a real pity, which then makes you think that you’d rather be in the back instead. Well actually, there are plenty of other reasons why you’d think that, for the new Honda’s rear cabin is the very best in the class, by far. For absolute legroom, it matches the Almera’s, but it’s the width that makes the City a real winner.

The space advantage is upheld by the cavernous 536-litre boot too, which is also class-leading (the Vios offers 506 litres). Honda’s “Man Maximum, Machine Minimum” philosophy pushes the frontier of interior space, and the City is a showcase of packaging masterclass. If you have a large family, this is the B-segment sedan to have. Period.

On the quality front, however, it’s not so class-leading. While the Vios cabin (hard plastics notwithstanding) makes you feel good, the City’s quality pales in comparison. We’re talking about perceived quality here, of course, not actual quality – there’s no doubt that the Honda’s interior will face the test of time as well, if not better than the Toyota’s.

Based on what you can see and feel, the Vios has the edge on material quality. Surely that wasn’t in the script. Apart from the City’s small section of soft-touch pad above the glove box (which is only present on the high-spec models, by the way), the Vios’ equally-hard plastics are finished in a nicer, more eye- and touch-friendly texture.

It’s still a good place to be in, though. Details such as the blue-ringed illuminated instrument cluster and touch-sensitive automatic air-con controls are nice, and the large touch-screen display mounted flush within the piano black centre console looks very premium indeed.

It works very well too. Its sleek, smartphone-like interface is both attractive and intuitive to operate, which betters UMW Toyota and Edaran Tan Chong Motor’s locally-developed retrofit items that are offered on the Vios and Almera. Phone/audio streaming through Bluetooth and GPS navigation are all present, though you’d miss a dedicated volume knob.

You get four USB jacks too (two up front, two in the back; not counting the 12V power socket), plus a class-first HDMI input. The latter allows you to link up the screen to your smartphones (iOS only for now) through HondaLink. It’s not the full-blown Apple CarPlay just yet, but it’s a good start nonetheless.

In terms of driving dynamics, it’s clear that, even more so than before, this City is not aiming at all-out back-road pace. What this car does best is transport you around in comfort by the line of least resistance, especially through the urban sprawl, and this explains the move back to having a CVT gearbox.

Yes, like it or not, Honda CVTs are back and it’s here to stay. This new Earth Dreams Technology transmission promises improved refinement and a total lack of bunny-hopping through traffic (rough low-speed gearchanges) that can inflict conventional torque-converter-equipped automatic cars, along with improved fuel efficiency.

It’s in the city, then, that the new City feels most at home. The tried and tested engine has enough low-down torque to feel sprightly around town, while the steering is light, and visibility (thanks to the elevated seating position that’s forced on you) is good. The new car’s softer suspension setup also rides out ripples particularly well, if not as good as either the Vios and Almera.

Out and about, the Honda sends mixed signals. On the highways (or rather empty two-lane Thai roads) it cruises easily enough, the suspension pillowing or parrying undulations as appropriate, with only the engine noise playing against the significantly improved cabin refinement.

Though still rather loud, the i-VTEC wail is at least pleasing to the ears in a way that the Vios’ VVTi and Almera’s CVTC power units just aren’t. And at full chat, the Honda engine is the quietest of the lot, despite its transmission’s unnerving inclination to keep it running at a constant 6,000 rpm (just a shade under the red line).

You quickly learn that the engine and gearbox combo works best when under-stressed, the smooth power delivery making the car feel more rapid than it is against the clock. Plant your foot hard down, however, and the illusion falls apart, as the available 120 PS feels no better than the Toyota’s 109 PS. You can blame the CVT for that.

Take it beyond the city limits, and the car hardly feels happy for you to lean on it in corners, where you can feel the back end taking a share of the load through the significant amount of body roll. This is certainly no Type R, and it makes no attempts to claim as such.

The springing is fundamentally soft, but the damping confident enough to carry a good amount of speed through. Having said that, the Thai-spec cars run on a decent set of Bridgestone Turanza ER370, while the local cars we’ve seen so far are all shod with the less-than-stellar Goodyear GT3s. How that will affect grip and road noise remains to be seen.

In short, the 2014 Honda City is nowhere near as wieldy as the Ford Fiesta, but it’s marginally more capable through the twisty stuff than the Toyota Vios, Nissan Almera and the locally-assembled Volkswagen Polo. On the flipside, those three have slightly better ride comfort than the City, but only just.

If you sense a little bit of disappointment in this preview, you’ve read it correctly. The new City promises a lot with its brand new platform and transmission, yet offers a mere incremental improvement over the older model. If anything, the jump here is smaller than what Toyota achieved by simply fine-tuning its existing (old) hardware. But let’s not allow that to distract you from what is still a great achievement.

So back to the initial question – is this the Vios-beater everyone is waiting for? It’s not quite the game-changer everyone – us included – expected it to be, but with its impressive breadth of abilities plus stand-out styling and class-leading features (on both toys and safety fronts, no less), it certainly looks like it.

Ultimately, its price will likely determine how it fares against the popular Toyota, so watch this space closely. From an objective point of view, that’s a job well done once again, Honda. This City joins the Accord at the top of their respective classes, and the CR-V is not bad either. Now, about that Civic…

Honda Displays New Civic Black Edition in Geneva, Goes on Sale in May

It’s not near as mean looking as Honda's other Civic, the Type R Concept, but we guess the all-black theme does add some character of the sinister kind to the new Civic Black Edition that's on show in Geneva.

European buyers of the regular Civic hatchbacks will be able to tick the option box for the Black Edition package beginning from this May.

What they will get is gloss black front aprons, side skirts, rear spoiler and a rear bumper garnish together with integrated covers for the side mirrors, a gloss black fuel lid cover with Civic logo and an aluminum badge placed on the deck lid.

To complete the look of the car, as seen in the pictures, you'll have to dig a bit deeper inside your pockets for the optional 18-inch "Nitrogen" alloy wheels in a matte gunpowder black finish and a carbon-look center cap.

Honda deploys new fast-fill hydrogen station, refuels tanks in under three minutes

Honda has installed a new fast-fill hydrogen station at its Torrance, California research-and-development facility.

The station will serve as a proving ground for the company's MC Fill hydrogen fueling protocol, enabling other automakers to bring vehicles and equipment to the site for testing and validation.

The station is designed to work with fuel systems that store hydrogen at a pressure of 700 bar (10,000 psi). It is claimed to reduce 700-bar fueling times by up to 45 percent compared to alternative protocols, completing most fills in less than three minutes under normal conditions.

The technology is said to achieve shorter fuel times by monitoring the dispenser outlet temperature, continually adjusting the fill rate for various temperature conditions. The system also considers gas pressure and the capacity of the system to absorb heat generated during refueling.

"In order to meet customer expectations, hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles need driving ranges and fueling times comparable to conventional gasoline vehicles," said Honda R&D Americas senior engineer Steve Mathison. "This new fueling protocol will allow FCEV customers everywhere to realize short fueling times over a wide range of temperatures."

The company expects a production version of its FCEV Concept to arrive on the market in 2015, with a 300-mile range competitive with plug-in electric vehicles. A price tag for the car remains unclear, however, as companies continue to struggle with high costs of existing fuel-cell implementations.

Everus S1 gets a 1.3 in China

http://www.carnewschina.com/2014/03/06/everus-s1-gets-a-1-3-in-china/

The Everus S1 1.3 has been launched on the China car market. Price starts at 67.800 yuan and ends at 77.800 yuan. The engine poops out 82hp and 116nm, sending power to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic. Up until now the Everus S1 was only available with a 1.5.

Everus is a sub-brand of the Guangzhou-Honda joint venture. The S1 is the brand’s only car, it is based on the last generation Honda City sedan that was made in China by Guangzhou-Honda. The 1.3 engine has a strange history. When the Everus S1 was launched in 2011 it was available. When the facelifted S1 debuted in May last year the 1.3 was cancelled. And now it is, back again.

Honda putting CNG fueling station near Marysville plant

http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/blog/2014/03/honda-putting-cng-fueling-station-near-marysville.html

As Ohio lawmakers debate incentives for alternative fuels, Honda of America Manufacturing Inc. is placing bets on the future of CNG vehicles.

Honda on Tuesday announced it’s building the first CNG station near its plant in Marysville. It will be the first public CNG station located on a Honda property in North America.

“A major barrier to our carriers and suppliers adopting the use of CNG as a fuel is the lack of convenient fueling stations close to Honda facilities,” Jim Wehrman, Honda of America Manufacturing senior vice president, said in a statement.

Honda Motor Co. is the only major automaker that sells a CNG-run car, the Civic. Other auto manufacturers sell bigger vehicles that use CNG. General Motors Co. said in October that it would begin selling less than 1,000 CNG- and gasoline-fueled Chevrolet Impalas, and Chrysler Group LLC has heavy-duty pickup trucks than run on CNG. As the only manufacturer selling a day-to-day car, Honda has an obvious incentive to support its use as a transportation fuel.

Honda of America’s CNG plant will be designed, built and run by Chicago-based Trillium CNG, It will be located on Honda’s property at the interchange of Route 33 and Route 739.

Jeff Bolyard, vice president of gas services at consulting firm Delta Energy, told me several of his industrial clients are in various stages of building or using existing CNG stations. To convert their diesel-fueled vehicles to compressed natural gas is an expensive undertaking, but high-usage vehicles that are used in fleets can make up the difference with low CNG prices.

“The gap right now between compressed natural gas retail price we see is around $2 a diesel gallon equivalent,” he said, “compared to $4 per gallon of diesel. So it’s almost half the cost for CNG right now.”

Increasing demand could eventually raise those costs. The U.S. is seeing a domestic energy boom as newly drillable gas fields sprout up seemingly every few years. Talk of exporting that natural gas, especially to the Ukraine, will only make demand grow, as will the move away from coal-powered power plants to natural gas-powered plants.

Increasing prices is a concern, Bolyard said, but because natural gas is cheaper to refine than diesel fuel, increased prices still likely will be comparatively lower.

“Any benefit the state or federal government could provide would be a huge assistance in getting it up and running,” Bolyard said.

The Ohio House of Representatives’ Finance and Appropriations Committee could vote Tuesday on House Bill 336, which would give sales tax breaks and tax credits for people who buy or convert vehicles into alternative fuels, including compressed natural gas.

Separately, Honda of America Manufacturing recently voiced its support to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio for an application by Columbia Gas of Ohio Inc. to use its natural gas in compressed natural gas stations. That application will be decided by the commission Wednesday but shouldn’t cause a problem, as other companies that don’t use Columbia Gas product, such as IGS Energy, already builds CNG stations in Ohio. Honda said it would increase “ the transportation options available to the citizens of Ohio consistent with the public policies of both the state and nation.”

2014 Honda City – Malaysian spec sheet leaked online

While we wait for the market launch of the 2014 Honda City, what appears to be the full spec sheet of our Malaysian models have appeared on a local web forum. This provides us with an early look at how the different variants will shape up. So let’s take closer look, shall we?

As confirmed earlier, there will four grades on offer – S, S+, E and V (one up from the outgoing model’s S, E and E+ variants). There’s a much wider spread in the equipment list than before, which, according to Honda Malaysia, will be reflected accordingly by the new prices.

The range-topping City Grade V looks very impressive indeed, equipped with an upsized 16-inch wheels, Smart Entry keyless system, touch-screen automatic air-con, rear vents, leather-covered steering wheel and gearknob, cruise control, seven-inch touch-sensitive head-unit and an eight-speaker audio system.

The list goes on, to include the blue illuminated instrument cluster and HDMI input (for HondaLink), with six airbags and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) rounding up the safety front. How this variant will be priced remains to be seen, but it will certainly be the best-equipped Japanese B-segment sedan when it goes on sale.

Move a step down and you’ll have the Grade E, which used to be the City’s flagship model here. Compared to the new range-topper, this one trades in the V’s platinum-effect grille for a chrome-finished unit. Other visual giveaways are the deleted foglights and a smaller set of 15-inch wheels.

Fortunately, it keeps the V’s wing mirrow-mounted turning indicators, chrome door handles, and Smart Entry system. Inside, the touch-sensitive display and climate control are replaced by an Audio CD player and manual air-con, but Bluetooth connectivity and dedicated rear air-con vents remain.

Airbag count for the Grade E and below is set at two, and unlike in Thailand where it is standard across the range, VSA is limited to the E and V variants only. Still, the spec sheet claims a full five star ASEAN NCAP safety rating for all 2014 Honda City models.

The base S and S+ variants look to be bare basic models to fight the bottom range of the Toyota Vios and Nissan Almera. The Grade S, especially, will look rather different than the rest with its silver grille, pole-type antenna (the others get a BMW-like fin) and, get this, steel wheels with covers.

Inside, the S and S+ will be identical to each other, with urethane steering wheel (with no audio controls) and a simpler amber meter cluster. Also removed are the Bluetooth link, armrests (both front and back), rear air-con vents and split-folding rear seats. Rather basic, then, but hopefully they will be cheap.

Click on the spec sheet image above to study the model differences in more detail. As it didn’t come from an official source, though, there may be discrepancies to the final products, which will be revealed soon. An ad on our sister car classifieds site oto.my claims a price range of between RM74k to RM89k. Stay tuned for more details.

Honda recalls 886,815 Odyssey minivans for fire risk

DETROIT -- Honda Motor Co. is recalling 886,815 Odyssey minivans in the United States because a fuel pump cover can deteriorate and cause a fuel leak.

Odysseys from 2005 through 2010 model years are involved. The recalled minivans were made between June 23, 2004, and September 4, 2010.

According to documents posted Saturday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the cover on the fuel pump strainer can wear down from exposure to high temperatures and acidic chemicals, like those found in fertilizers. Fuel leaks can cause a vehicle fire.

Honda says no fires or injuries have been reported.

Honda dealers will repair the vehicles for free, but the company says replacement parts may not be available until this summer. It will notify owners of the recall next month.

Honda Civic Hybrid road trip: mystery machine

Well, the idea for this road trip was solely mine and it started out quite innocently, I assure you. Here’s the concept: To look not for food but something different, something that isn’t very ordinary. Well, haunted places aren’t very ordinary, isn’t it? Malaysia is simply filled with these kind of places, thanks partly to our superstitious upbringing.

So there we were, in the dead of night, snugged within the cabin of the Civic Hybrid, which nose was pointing uphill, with its headlamps on high beam, throwing illumination at the road ahead. Failed. The darkness that had descended upon the War Museum in Penang doesn’t feel natural, as if there was an oppressive force that had cupped this area with its hands. No, technology wasn’t going to penetrate this. We had driven up as high as our courage would let us, which was the first pill box you see as you near the museum. Which, when you think about it, wasn’t that high at all.

The War Museum has built up a reputation for itself. Before it was reclaimed from the jungle, the War Museum served as an outpost for the British army, and then a POW camp for the invading Japanese Army during the Second World War. Needless to say, prisoners were tortured and executed here, although there are no exacting records to back up the claims.

Yet, something unnatural must have lingered from the day and then manifested itself when the transformation from abandoned prison camp to museum took place. The workers claimed that they saw a towering figure, with fangs for a face and large red orbs as eyes. There are also those who have experienced – especially at night – unnatural coldness, the feeling that they are being watched by the spirits that haunts the hill.

“Paul, I didn’t sign up for this,” cried Sherman as he prepared to go outside. He checked his camera settings one last time, took a deep breath, then stepped out. I looked to the rear view mirror as Sherman walked down to position himself for the picture. He disappeared from view as the darkness swallowed him.

I am left alone in the car with the soft glow of the digital instrument cluster as my only company. It was all quiet, the Civic Hybrid auto start/stop system had kicked in to save fuel; typical of a car of this nature. The car lights remained turned on.

I looked outside to the thick brush that looked like its moving closer to the car. Did I just see two orbs lit up within the bush? What have I gotten myself into, indeed.

This so-called haunted road trip started out easy. A quick drive from Kuala Lumpur and up the mountain is Genting Highlands, an all too familiar place when it comes to encountering the supernatural, albeit the rarity of the experience. Yet, if you pick any hotel, there is bound to be a story tacked to them.

Although none more than the infamous First World Hotel where a friend witness another person being possessed by a spirit that was demanding justice. While another saw a game of mahjong being played at the foot of her bed. Not quite a hotel but still has its share of the scary pie is the Ria Apartment. Tales of murder and suicide that happened within the walls of this two-block apartment have quickly descended into stories of apparitions of unrested spirits that still roam the hallways.

Another hotel infamous for the supernatural is the E&O Hotel in Penang, a long way from Kuala Lumpur but the fuel-efficient nature of the Civic Hybrid meant that there was enough in the tank to get there, and then some.

This hotel is old, established in the late 1800s by the Sarkies Brothers, who is said to still roam the halls of the hotel. True or not, the only chilling thing that I have experienced in my personal stays here was the air conditioning. However, I can imagine that the old architecture and the colonial-esque décor coupled with long lonely halls with too many blind corners could give birth to a haunted impression.

I was brought back to the present when the silence inside the Civic Hybrid broke to the sound of Sherman prying open the car door and dropped himself into the passenger seat. “Go, go,” were his only words.

I did not need to be told twice. Excellent turning radius of the car made short work of the three-point-turn. As we shot down hill, a shade shot past the windscreen. Bird? Bat? I hoped it is one of the two and nothing more.

A new day brought us to a new place – Kellie’s Castle in Batu Gajah, Perak. The mansion began construction in the early 1900s but was never completed. The owner, William Kellie Smith passed on due to pneumonia, before construction could complete. He left behind a devastated wife, who them moved back to Scotland after selling the property. It is said that Smith still walks the halls of his unfinished house while other tales add that his daughter can be seen playing in one of the rooms.

However, the timing wasn’t right as we arrived near dusk, thinking that we could go into the castle at the right time. The attraction closes its gates at six – we only manage a few interior pictures when the hour hand swept past six.

I turned the Civic Hybrid back to Kuala Lumpur for the final leg of the journey. By now, we’d have already clocked over 900km and our last refuel was in Penang. With just under a quarter of fuel left, we head to our final three more spots, sort of, I consider the two schools as one as they are side by side. The backyard of the primary school near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Hulu Klang is said to be the haunting ground of a female-figured ghost although it is the secondary school across the river that bears the more chilling tale.

This one comes from an ex-student there who says that there is a spirit, with long-hair no less, that roams the school as well as the roads that surrounds the school. Frequent occurrences of sightings at night and hysteria following supernatural possessions made the school authorities sought the services of a local shaman.

The shaman, after uttering some words, released chickens into the school yard. The following day, they found the chickens dead in the most unusual way – the chickens were whole yet completely drained of blood, as if something had sucked it out of the fowls although there were no telling cuts or marks as proof. Freaky.

Our final destination saw us pulling over in front of a house in an otherwise pleasant neighbourhood called Zooview. As its name suggests, this place is near the National Zoo, if you are interested. In any case, we stepped out of the car and looked into the dilapidated house. It is broken, sad and looked forbidding. The plants that were once well-trimmed in the garden now grow wild.

Sherman moved to the other side of the road, so he could setup the camera. I ventured to the front gates, peeked in but it was too dark to see anything other than that of my imagination. I took another step in. The top floor, which is the parking area, is littered with debris and things that I can’t describe due to the lack of light. Yet, I could see an outline of steps that led down to the house proper but the path to there is quite blocked. Just then, a loud shrill pierced the air as I recalled the story to this place.

It was once owned by a professor that had gone mad. In his moment of insanity, he brutally murdered his family and then finally turned on himself. Residents in the area claimed that the angry spirits still reside within the house and it always sends a chill down the spine every time they pass the house. Even the staunchest of unbelievers would bend the other way for this house.

The leaves on the trees started to violently rustle, as if a strong wind had unsettled them. Except that it wasn’t windy. Then we heard the rustling that had started at the tree tops began to inch closer. We knew that we overstayed our welcome, even if it was from the outside. We packed up and jumped into the Civic Hybrid and squeezed everything the engine could muster. The assisted acceleration was good enough to get us to the foot of the hill in mere seconds. Good, we wanted to put as much distance between us and house.

With that, we were somewhat glad that this little insane road trip ended. It had its spine chilling moments peppered by things that make you go hmm. Nevertheless, the trip was fun although we don’t think we’ll go on one again in the near future.

Updated Research Report on Honda

http://www.zacks.com/stock/news/126607/updated-research-report-on-honda

On Mar 14, 2014, we issued an updated research report on Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (HMC - Analyst Report). The company’s efforts to develop infrastructure and introduce new products are helping in business expansion. However, we are concerned about increasing selling, general and administrative (SG&A) and research and development (R&D) expenses and debt. Frequent product recalls are also disadvantageous.

Honda posted a 107.6% rise in earnings to ¥160.7 billion ($1.53 billion) or ¥89.18 (85 cents) per share in the third quarter (ended Dec 31, 2013) of fiscal 2014 from ¥77.4 billion ($0.97 billion) or ¥42.97 (41 cents) per share in the same quarter of the prior fiscal year. However, earnings per share lagged behind the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 86 cents.

Consolidated net sales and other operating revenues grew 24.5% to ¥3.02 trillion ($22.7 billion) but remained less than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $28.95 billion. The year-over-year increase was attributable to higher revenues in the automobile and motorcycle business operations as well as favorable foreign currency translation effects.

For fiscal 2014, Honda has projected revenues to increase 22.5% to ¥12.1 trillion ($121 billion). Operating income is expected to surge 43.2% to ¥780 billion ($7.8 billion) and net income is anticipated to jump 58% to ¥580 billion ($5.8 billion) or ¥321.81 ($3.22) per share. The company expects higher revenues, favorable model mix, effective cost reduction measures, positive currency effects and beneficial impact of raw material cost fluctuations to contribute to the increase in profits during the year.

Currently, shares of Honda retain a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). Some other automobile stocks worth considering are Tata Motors Ltd. (TTM - Snapshot Report), Daimler AG (DDAIF) and Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA - Analyst Report). Tata Motors and Daimler sport a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) while Tesla is Zacks Rank #2 stock.

Best & worst used cars
Great choices for every budget—and models to avoid

Every year it becomes more difficult to shop for a used car. Prices have been at historic highs, even for models with high mileage and seemingly excessive wear. And with so many vehicles from which to choose, it can feel overwhelming to find a car that drives well and will hold up down the road.

The lists below shows you the best small cars, sedans, and SUVs in four price ranges. Every car on this list performed well in our tests whenit was new and has had above-average reliability for the model years shown, based on our latest  Annual Auto Survey. Each vehicle also came standard with electronic stability control (ESC), a proven lifesaver, during the years indicated, unless otherwise noted. Consider these the used cars we would recommend to our family and friends.

Also, see our lists of used cars for every budget and those to avoid for models not to purchase.

Less than $10,000
Small cars
Toyota Prius (2004-07), Scion xB (2004-06), Pontiac Vibe (2005-08), Toyota Matrix (2005-07)

With its 44 mpg overall, the Prius is the most efficient non-plug-in five-passenger car you can buy, plus it has plenty of room and a nice ride. Reliability has been first-rate. The Scion xB has standard ESC and is a great city car, with compact dimensions and easy access, and the Vibe and Matrix twins are quite versatile. For the Prius, Matrix, and Vibe, look for one with the optional ESC.

Sedans
Hyundai Sonata (2007-08) and Acura TSX (2004)

The economical, efficient, and comfortable Sonata has a nice ride, secure handling, and a peppy four-cylinder engine that returned 23 mpg overall. For something sportier, the Acura TSX is responsive, quiet, well-finished, and enjoyable to drive.

SUVs
Toyota Highlander V6 (2004) Mitsubishi Outlander (2007)

The Highlander has a nicely finished, quiet, and comfortable interior, along with a strong V6 engine. Handling is secure, but it leans more toward comfort than sportiness. The smaller Mitsubishi Outlander has sportier handling and can be found with a third-row seat.

$10,000-$15,000
Small cars
Honda Fit (2011-13) and Kia Soul (2010-11)

The Fit’s forte is its amazing cargo-carrying versatility. Yet it’s also fun to drive, with great fuel economy and excellent reliability. For a little more passenger room and almost every creature comfort, check out the Kia Soul.

Sedans
Mazda3 (2009-12), Infiniti G35 (2006-07)

The Mazda3 has precise and responsive handling, refined engines, and a comfortable ride, although it can be loud on the highway. The Skyactiv 2.0-liter engine, which arrived for 2012, provides an impressive 32 mpg overall. For something more luxurious, try the Infiniti G35, one our favorite sports sedans, with its super handling, potent V6, and easy controls.

SUVs
Acura MDX (2004-06), Toyota RAV4 (2006, 2008), Honda CR-V (2005-08)

The upscale MDX offers seating for seven, a strong and refined powertrain, a pleasant ride, and agile routine handling. The smaller RAV4 has an optional but snug third-row seat, and both the four- and six-cylinder engines get impressive fuel economy. For a more refined alternative to the Toyota, the CR-V has a strong four-cylinder and a nicer interior.

$15,000-$20,000
Small cars
Hyundai Elantra (2012-13), Subaru Impreza (2011-13)

These are as roomy and comfortable as larger, more expensive cars. The Elantra combines nimble and secure handling with a fairly comfortable ride. The Impreza sedan and hatchback both offer standard all-wheel drive along with sporty handling and a great ride.

Sedans
Toyota Camry (2011-12), Toyota Camry Hybrid (2010-11), Acura TL (2008)

Both the four- and six-cylinder Camry deliver impressive fuel economy (26 and 27 mpg, respectively) along with a comfortable ride, a roomy cabin, and superb reliability. For even better gas mileage, the Camry Hybrid gets 34 mpg overall and 41 on the highway. A sportier alternative is the Acura TL, which has long been one of our favorite sedans to drive.

SUVs
Lexus RX (2006-07), Subaru Forester (2009-10, nonturbo)

The Lexus RX is comfortable, nicely finished, and extremely reliable. The hybrid version gets good fuel economy. The Forester is more utilitarian but handles well and has an excellent ride. Access is easy, and the view out is the best among SUVs.

$20,000-$25,000
Sedans
Toyota Avalon (2011), Lexus LS (2006), Lincoln MKZ (2011-12), Ford Fusion Hybrid (2012)

The Avalon is one of our favorite cars for a long trip; it has a quiet interior with limo-like rear leg room. The Lexus LS is even more posh, with a superb ride and top-notch reliability. For more driving excitement, the Lincoln MKZ handles responsively, rides well, and has generous power, but it has a somewhat low-rent interior. It’s based on the Ford Fusion, which in hybrid form returns an impressive 34 mpg overall.

SUVs
Toyota Highlander Hybrid (2008-09), Honda Pilot (2009-10)

If you want a midsized, three-row SUV with the best fuel economy possible, look no further than the Highlander Hybrid. At 24 mpg overall, it matches the fuel economy of many smaller SUVs and even some midsized sedans. It has a sumptuous interior and a smooth ride. The Pilot delivers sharper handling, and its comfortable third row brings the seating to eight.

Steer clear of these troublesome vehicles

Mini Cooper

These models, listed alphabetically, are the worst of the worst. They have multiple years of much-worse-than-average overall reliability, based on 2004 through 2013 models, according to our Annual Auto Survey. Each one has at least three model years of reliability data.

Craigslist 2008 Honda S2000 Club Racer Edition Has Only 4,235 Miles

One may be tempted to quickly dismiss the aero package seen on this black Honda S2000 as an aftermarket conversion with a poor taste in rear wings, but this is actually a limited edition named CR for Club Racer, offered by the Japanese brand during the roadster's last two years on the U.S. market with less than 2,000 cars produced.

For a mainstream sports car, it's a rare edition and the fact that it has racked up only 4,235 miles makes it even rarer, which is why the Craigslist ad caught our attention in the first place.

As a quick reminder and besides the big rear wing and different front bumper that incorporates a spoiler, the track-worthy S2000 CR also came with a quicker steering ratio, bespoke 17-inch alloys in Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tires, firmer springs and dampers, and larger stabilizer bars, while keeping the 2.2-liter VTEC untouched at 237hp at 7,800 rpm and 162 lb-ft. of torque at 6,800 rpm.

Honda also added a lightweight aluminum hard top in place of the retractable soft top, which it said at the time, resulted in an overall weight savings of around 90 pounds over the regular S2000 (without the aluminum roof, of course).

The seller, who is located in Raleigh, North Carolina, is asking $33,000 to depart ways with the 2008MY S2000 CR.

Japanese union workers see first wage increase since 2008

http://www.leftlanenews.com/japanese-union-workers-see-first-wage-increase-since-2008.html

Japanese automakers are raising workers' wages in their home country for the first time since the global financial crisis in 2008.

The move was prompted by union pleas and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's efforts to battle over 15 years of deflation. According to the Detroit Free Press, the 50,000-plus members of the Toyota Motor Workers' Union will receive a $26 per month bump in base pay. Factoring in pay increases based on seniority and promotions, Toyota says the average bump will be 2.9 percent per worker. In addition, average bonuses will rise to $24,093, or the equivalent of 6.8 months' salary.

Nissan, for its part, will raise base pay for its union workers by $35 with bonuses equal to 5.6 months' salary. Honda will hike wages by $22 and did not comment on bonuses.

Abe has been on an aggressive campaign to weaken the Japanese yen in order to gain a trade advantage, but many of Japan's trading partners, including the US, are doing the same to their respective currencies. So far, his plan appears to have worked, with the best yen-to-dollar exchange rate since 2009, but which is still below pre-2008 rates. Still, the strategy has helped Toyota add $1.9 billion to its already substantial cash pile.

The wage increase will also help workers offset Japan's first increase of its national sales tax in 17 years.

If you've been reading Green Car Reports over the past week, you might have seen we recently bought a 2001 Honda Insight--an example of one of the first hybrids sold by a major automaker.

But what if you want to buy your own early Insight? What do you need to look out for?

And more importantly, should you buy one over a 2001-2003 Toyota Prius--the other, and considerably more successful hybrid that subsequently started the craze?

Finding one

Arguably, one of the trickiest aspects of buying a first-generation Honda Insight is finding one in the first place.

Honda sold little over 17,000 units worldwide between Japanese sales starting in 1999 and production stopping in 2006. On a global scale, that's pretty rare.

In the UK, where we bought ours, they're even rarer--around 250 found homes, and about 220 examples are still on the roads.

Luckily there are far more roaming around in the U.S, and there should be at least one lurking on sites like eBay at any given time. The downside is that it might not be anywhere near you--you may need to travel quite a distance for a good Insight.

First inspection

If you've managed to find an Insight, the next thing you need to know is what sort of general condition it's in.

Many Insights will have covered over 100,000 miles by this point, and more than a few have done double that. Those that haven't yet broken into six-figure mileages will typically cost a bit more, but the important thing to note is that condition is much more important than mileage.

In reality, the drivetrain components are quite happy doing several hundred thousand miles--and as a highly-efficient car, owners tend to treat them gently and maintain them well, to ensure good economy.

A history check with companies like Carfax is still worth doing if it isn't already being offered by the seller though--it's nice to know whether the car has had any accidents in its life and how regularly it's been serviced.

Viewing

The Insight is constructed from aluminum, so the good news is wherever the car is located, rust shouldn't be an issue. Aluminum does oxidize, and you may see small bubbles in the paintwork as a result, but ultimately there'll be no holes or seriously bad patches.

It's worth inspecting for damage though, as aluminum can be expensive to repair. The front and rear bumpers are plastic and may be hard to find, but they should be cheaper than new fenders. The rear aero spats can be tricky too--they're rare, and replacements cost a few hundred bucks to replace brand new.

Headlights are prone to clouding up--something we're fixing on ours with a cheap restoration kit--and wheels can oxidize and corrode, which may require painting or re-finishing.

Check the tires too--not just for condition (minimum legal tread depth is up to Lincoln's upturned head on a penny, but you should really replace them before that) but also the type--Bridgestone B391 tires were fitted as standard, and virtually all owners report better gas mileage on these. They can be difficult to find at competitive prices, though.

Inside, inspecting the Insight is just a case of checking for wear and tear. It's a simple interior, with few creature comforts other than a pair of soft seats and air conditioning. It's not luxurious, but aside from a few rattles here and there it's generally tough.

Another interior check is the instrument cluster. It should all light up, of course, but check for the 'IMA' light to indicate any issues with the battery and hybrid system--it should extinguish soon after turning the key. The trip computer button is also known to fail, but obviously isn't a major concern.

Mechanical and electrical

The good news is that the Insight is, in general, incredibly reliable.

For a 1-liter car, the mileage some drivers have put on Insights with no major issues is extraordinary.

Honda's 'Mile Makers' website is dedicated to Hondas breaking the 100,000-mile mark. Several Insights have done over 300,000 miles now with few issues, and one has even breached the 400,000 barrier.

At a more typical 100,000 or so, issues are even fewer, but worth noting. Synchromesh rings in the manual gearbox can cause trouble, and some owners have reported CVT problems too.

Small oil leaks can develop here and there, engine mounts can degrade over time leading to vibration under acceleration, but stuttering and lack of low-revs power can be caused by other issues too--clogged exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems, dirty air filters (all easy fixes) or the dreaded IMA system.

2001 Honda Insight

2001 Honda Insight

Actually, the IMA isn't that bad. Most issues will be battery- related rather than motor-related.

The battery replacement or refurbishment window can be anywhere between 75,000 and 175,000 miles. It's complete pot-luck, but they don't tend to just "fail" so slow charging and discharging are usually indications well ahead of time.

Refurbishment is cheapest. Replacement can be expensive and goes some way to offsetting the car's excellent economy, though the new battery is likely to last another hundred-plus thousand miles.

Honda tells us the price of a first-gen Insight battery is currently $1,968.85. You can add $500 to that for shipping (including return shipping of the old core) and dealer labor can be added to that.

Some independent specialists offer upgraded alternatives for competitive prices. Many even offer warranties, but check with other owners to see who they recommend.

If the car you view needs a new battery though, remember to factor those replacement costs into your purchase.

Driving

The Insight is an easy car to drive, and even easier if you opt for models with the continuously-variable transmission.

It drives as you'd expect a light-weight, small-engined car to drive. The controls are light, it feels nimble, and with the IMA system providing an electric boost at low revs you don't need much throttle to get going. There's also more grip than you'd expect, largely thanks to the low weight.

The manual gearbox is light and precise, though cars with weak synchros may be a little more difficult in the lower gears.

The car is never quite as brisk as you might expect, largely down to long gearing. Just keep in mind that most of the time you'll need a lower gear than you're used to for harder acceleration or overtaking.

Keep any eye on the battery gauge--if it doesn't look like it's charging particularly quickly, it could be a sign the battery is on its way out. Poor low-end performance and hesitancy could be IMA-related, or could just be the aforementioned clogged EGR system.

All Insights have a firm ride, so if you're wincing over bumps that's probably normal. Though check with the owner what tire pressures he or she runs--many owners put a few extra pounds in there to help improve mileage further. Great for MPG, not so great for your spine.

2001 Honda Insight

2001 Honda Insight

Summary

Keep potential battery issues in mind--and ensure you can afford them if they happen--and the first-generation 2000-2006 Honda Insight is not a difficult car to buy.

Mileage doesn't seem to faze it despite the tiny engine, mechanical issues are few, and corrosion isn't a big problem even in the snow belt states.

There's also a healthy owners' community, the excellent InsightCentral forums--where every possible problem has been experienced and fixed many times over. And all but the most complicated issues can be fixed by the average home mechanic.

If all that isn't enough, the first-gen Insight remains one of the most economical cars on the road. 50 mpg is a minimum, and many owners experience 60, 70, 80 mpg and beyond, with various driving techniques.

Like all used cars, you have to do your homework. But pick the right example and the Insight will be fun to drive, ultra reliable and incredibly economical.

2014 Honda City launched in Malaysia, from RM76k

We’ve followed the new Honda City from its world debut to market launches in India and Thailand, before previewing the Malaysian-spec locally-assembled City last month, twice. We have even got behind its wheel for a test drive report, and compared it shoulder-to-shoulder with the outgoing car. It has been quite a journey, and here’s the climax – the official local launch of the 2014 Honda City.

Let’s do a recap, shall we. The all-new Honda City, which shares a platform with the new Jazz, has grown in size – while it is just 25 mm longer than the previous car, the new wheelbase length of 2,600 mm is a significant 50 mm more, which means that overhangs have been minimised. 2,600 mm matches the Nissan Almera‘s WB and eclipses the Toyota Vios‘ by 50 mm.

Honda says that rear passenger space is best-in-class. The target was D-segment space, and backbenchers get more room here than in the Civic and Toyota Camry, it is claimed. Honda, which has always excelled in packaging, pushed the dash forward and brought the hip-point back – these, plus the longer wheelbase helped realise the interior space gains. Also segment-leading is the 536-litre boot.

2014 City Interior

Under the hood is the familiar but lightly-improved 1.5 litre SOHC i-VTEC engine, now with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), a new resin intake manifold and less friction. The motor makes 120 PS at 6,600 rpm and 145 Nm at 4,600 rpm, and is mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission. Unlike the Almera and Vios, there’s no basic manual-transmission version offered here.

The Earth Dreams Technology CVT replaces the previous car’s torque converter five-speed automatic. The change to CVT, coupled with lower weight and better aerodynamics, has improved fuel consumption – 17.5 km/l vs 15.3 km/l in Honda’s own tests. Also, ECON mode makes a debut in the City.

Not the most important point in such a car, but the 1,075 kg City does the 0-100 km/h sprint in 10.5 seconds, or 10.8 seconds for the heavier (1,106 kg) and wider-tyred range-topping variant. Top speed is 190 km/h.

The new platform is suspended by front McPherson struts and a rear torsion beam, the standard arrangement in this class. The rear brakes are drum units, but Honda says that braking performance is the same as before. The EPS steering turns 175/65 R15 tyres in all but the V, which is shod with 185/55 R16 rubber. The price-busting S rides on steel wheels with caps, while all other grades get alloy rims.

Speaking of grades, four will be offered in Malaysia – S, S+, E and V. The top-spec V is richly equipped for a B-segment sedan. The above-mentioned 16-inch rims, touch-panel auto air-con, rear air-con vents, leather steering with audio/cruise control buttons, keyless entry + push start and illuminated meter are all standard, plus a touch-screen head unit with seven-inch screen and eight speakers.

The E gets some of the V’s goodies, but not all of course, while the S is cheap (we mean the sticker price) and basic. Click on the spec sheet scan below for a detailed look at the equipment spread.

Safety-wise, the ABS, EBD, Brake Assist and dual-airbags are standard across the board. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Hill Start Assist are only for the E and V, while side + curtain airbags are exclusive to the V, making it a total of six airbags. ISOFIX child seat mounts are standard.

The 2014 Honda City is available in five colours: Modern Steel Metallic, Alabaster Silver Metallic, Taffeta White, Crystal Black Pearl and the new Brilliant Sporty Blue Metallic.

Prices start from RM75,800 for the S and RM78,800 for the S+, rising to RM83,800 for the Grade E. The range topping V is priced at RM90,800. There are two add-on packages – a RM3,200 Modulo Package (body kit, side skirts, boot spoiler, door visor) and a RM1,700 Premium Package (foot lights, sports pedal, side step illumination, trunk tray, trunk organiser).

The City comes with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty, while the service interval is 10,000 km. Buyers get six times free labour service, alternating with paid service, up till 100,000 km.

Driver's Seat: Review of 2014 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite

This week: Honda Odyssey.

Price: $45,280 as tested

Marketer’s pitch: “This sucks,” says the broken crayon to the old lollipop, animal cracker, toy soldier, gummy and piece of popcorn. Just before the vacuum hose sucks them up.

Conventional wisdom: Edmunds.com likes the “agile handling; fuel-efficient V6; quiet cabin; configurable second-row seat; easy-to-fold third-row seat,” but not that it’s “pricier than some competitors.”

Reality: Not bad for a box.

Family unit: It’s been around 30 years since Chrysler introduced the modern American front-wheel drive minivan with the Dodge Caravan. Since then the choices multiplied considerably and then divided once more. Now, Honda and Toyota have become top box, although today that has all the cache of a Caribbean cruise or relaxed-fit pants. But when you've spent more than 20 years carting around Sturgis Kid 1.0 through 4.0, one learns it’s the only way to take everyone and everything — from diapered youngsters to college dormsters.

Cleaning up: Anyone who’s ever passed a Sturgis minivan in a parking lot has watched the debris fall out every time the sliding doors open. It’s like a Warner Brothers cartoon closet. And so the onboard vacuum was so obvious that it took 30 years for designers to think it up.

Thirteen-year-old Sturgis Kid 4.0 and I found it does the job quite well. It has an actual ShopVac inside the rear compartment wall complete with tools, a filter and a small bag, and plenty of suction to pick up the toughest dirt. This only comes on the Touring Elite, and that price above is the no-options, bargain-basement version. Ouch.

As a minivan veteran, I’m sorry I didn't think of this first, although after some trips I think a rubber floor, hose and drain would be more appropriate.

On the road: It’s not all about the kids, right? Mom and Dad still want to feel a bit of racer in them, and the Odyssey serves up enough pep — 248 horses are brewed by the 3.5-liter V6 — to make driving, well, at least not terrible.

On the curves: The Odyssey handled best of the three. It’s not a Miata, but then you don’t have to slowly pour yourself into the Odyssey like it’s a voyage on the Yellow Submarine. And you can bring along six more friends. The Odyssey handles much better than most large crossovers I've tested as well.

Shifty: The downside? The transmission selector only offers D, OD off and L, not the full range of gears.

Driver comfort: If Mom or Dad can’t have fun, at least they’ll be comfortable. The Odyssey Driver’s Seat was not too heavy in the lumbar support like many Hondas.

Room for the family: This is where minivans have it all over crossovers — if you need room for real people in the back, all three have it. The Odyssey rear seat lands about in the middle of the three. Foot room is kind of tough and the seat sits a little low to the floor. The middle row does slide back and forth, which helps make the most of available space. And all but the bare-bones Odyssey offer seating for eight.

Technology: Plenty of places to plug in HDMI and 12V, as expected.

Stuff: The minivans all average about 150 cubic feet of space behind the front seats, which is head and shoulders (and futons and boxes) over any crossover or SUV. The Chevy Traverse-Buick Enclave cousins win that category, at a slight 116 cubes.

A big bin between seats is almost too big; put in just a couple CDs and they clatter around as you drive. And the rear DVD player sits in the dashboard, taking valuable cubby space from this area. A pull-out tray holds cell phones and other devices.

The seats come up and fold down very easily.

Keeping cozy: The heater controls are on top of the dashboard with the seat heater controls right over them. Buttons operate the fan, while dials control temperature on each side. I prefer all dials.

Radio gaga: The radio controls irk. Until you get presets arranged, it’s touch the screen to change the station, then again to change source. It’s really hard to do on the fly.

The navigation is on a separate screen, offering far and away one of the worst views of Earth I've ever seen. I found it hard to get around unless I was zoomed up to the closest level. And the map controls are at the bottom of the console, while the map sits on the other end of the heater controls and radio controls. Confusing.

Night shift: The interior lights interfere with night driving a bit.

Fuel economy: 21 mpg.

Where it’s built: Lincoln, Ala.

How it’s built: Consumer Reports puts its predicted reliability at only average, which is the rating it’s received for most of the last several years.

Driven: 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring Sedan

Honda’s been at the hybrid game for some time now, having introduced North America’s first hybrid vehicle, the first-generation Insight, in 1999.

It followed that launch with the first hybrid version of an existing mass-market vehicle three years later with the Civic Hybrid, and a year after that came the world’s first mass-produced V6 hybrid car — the first-gen Accord Hybrid. Then came the second-gen Insight in 2009 followed by its first sporty hybrid, the CR-Z, in 2010.

This year, the Japanese automaker introduced the all-new Honda Accord Hybrid midsize sedan to its award-winning and completely redesigned ninth-generation Accord stable.

The 2014 Accord Hybrid, manufactured not in Japan, but in Marysville, Ohio, and available in Base ($29,590) and Touring ($35,690) versions, visited us for a week in the latter trim loaded with new power, fuel-save, infotainment and safety technologies.

A big part of its swath of fresh tech is its new Earth Dreams drivetrain which, in the Accord Hybrid, features a system called Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD). This system uses a two-motor hybrid attack that cycles between three modes: EV drive (100 per cent electric motor), hybrid drive (electric motor and gasoline engine [driving the generator motor]) and engine drive (gasoline engine).

Under most conditions the gas engine powers a generator, which in turn provides energy to charge the hybrid battery and/or the electric motor to move the wheels. In addition, the i-MMD can operate on gasoline engine power only, mainly during medium- to high-speed cruising.

It uses a compact 1.3 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery which is charged by its 2.0-litre gas engine, regenerative braking, or a combination of each.

That new 2.0L DOHC i-VTEC four-cylinder Atkinson Cycle engine makes 141 horsepower and 122 pound-feet of torque and 196 peak horsepower with both the gas engine and the two-motor hybrid-drive system.

On the road, the Accord Hybrid offered a quiet ride both on the highway and in and around the city. It offered ample power for my everyday needs and didn’t wuss out on quick highway lane changes or pass manoeuvres.

Its electric continuously variable transmission (E-CVT), unified by the Accord’s integrated power unit (IPU) located behind the rear seat (packages the 1.3 kWh Li-Ion battery and a DC-DC converter), controls both the engine and the dual electric motor rotation.

Hit the throttle and the Accord Hybrid offers smooth and certain speedup along with efficient low-rpm highway cruising under gas-engine operation. The gas engine shuts down and starts seamlessly in city stop-and-go driving.

I didn’t find the Accord Hybrid’s brakes as grasping as most other hybrids I’ve driven. At 1,636 kg, the Accord Hybrid didn’t ‘feel’ heavy when driving and it handled the turns with minimal lean.

The Accord Hybrid’s console-mounted, straight-gate shifter can be operated in two different fully automatic modes — Regular ‘D’ mode and ‘B’ mode (brake), which offers substantially increased regenerative braking.

Behind the shifter is an EV button that puts the Accord into full electric operation. A green EV icon appears on the instrument panel when in that mode.

The Accord Hybrid’s Gov’t of Canada fuel economy rating is 3.7/4.0/3.8 (city/highway/combined); we managed 6.0 throughout our seven-day, early-February, mostly-city-driving test in very cold and snowy drive conditions while not ‘trying’ to drive economically.

There are several exterior styling accents that distinguish the Hybrid Accord from its gasoline brother.

Up front, the hybrid has a blue-accented upper grille along with blue-accented headlights (my Limited trim had LEDs) and LED daytime running lights.

Those LEDs provided superb nighttime driving visability.

From the rear, it showed blue-accented LED taillights, a trunk-lid spoiler, and a unique rear diffuser on the lower rear fascia.

The Hybrid also has standard 17-inch alloy wheels and has Hybrid badges on the front fenders and one on the trunk lid.

The Accord Hybrid’s interior design is pretty much the same as the Accord Sedan’s, save for the Hybrid’s black steering-wheel garnish and unique instrumentation.

A bright, full-colour, eight-inch i-MID (intelligent Multi-Information Display) serves as the control centre in my Touring tester for several electronic functions.

The screen shows the image from the backup camera, fuel efficiency information, audio functions, and Lane Watch (more on this later).

That eight-inch screen was embedded deep into the top portion of the centre stack while a smaller pop-out screen sits below, working as a touch screen providing more data about what’s going on up on the larger screen (which can also be navigated by a rotary-knob button and some buttons for accessing the core functions).

Its instrumentation consists of a centrally-positioned analog speedometer with a floating needle along with a high-contrast colour multi-information display (MID) at its centre.

That MID provides a range of info and trip computer roles and also displays Hybrid energy flow Eco Guide and Eco Score data.

Illuminated Eco Assist arcs on each side of the speedometer tell when the vehicle is being operated by a non-lead foot.

The speedometer is winged by a digital power-use meter and gear-position indicator on the left, and by digital battery charge and fuel level indicators on the right.

Overall, the cabin is spacious and comfortable and there is plenty of head and leg room for tall humans up front, while the leather-trimmed, 10-way powered driver and four-way powered passenger seats were supportive and would be comfy on log treks.

Head and legroom was plentiful in the rear, too, on the outboard seats, but the middle position was best left for the fold-down armrest and cupholders.

The fit and finish inside, I thought, was excellent for its segment, as there were lots of soft-touch plastics with fine textures and contrasting stitching. The tow-tone colour scheme and splashes of brightwork were all pleasing to the eyes.

The Accord Hybrid Touring featured a copius amount of techy safety goodies.

One feature that I used often was its LaneWatch Blind Spot Display; it uses a camera positioned below the passenger-side exterior mirror to show a wide-angle view of the passenger side roadway on the i-MID.

The image appears when the right turn signal is activated, or when a button on the end of the turn signal stalk is pressed.

The LaneWatch field-of-view (approximately 80 degrees), said Honda, is roughly four times greater than the regular view of a passenger-side mirror (18-22 degrees).

While nothing should replace a visual confirmation from the driver’s own eyes, I can see how this feature can be very beneficial when changing lanes or perhaps making a right turn towards a bike lane.

My tester also included a multi-angle rear-view camera, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and an acoustic vehicle alerting system (audibly warns pedestrians of its approach when the vehicle is operating in its quiet EV Drive mode).

The Accord Hybrid Touring also featured: dual-zone automatic climate control with air-filtration system, tilt and telescoping steering column, USB port, Bluetooth, SMS text messaging function (with compatible cell phones), speed-sensitive volume control, maintenance minder system, keyless entry, push-button start, heated front and rear seats, 360-watt premium audio system with seven speakers and subwoofer, satellite radio, compass, driver’s memory seat, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, the navigation system with voice recognition and FM traffic; six airbags; and vehicle stability assist with traction control.

Ohio dealership provides consumers with variety of in-depth Honda comparisons

Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla comparison among the latest added to Matt Castrucci Honda website

DAYTON, Ohio, March 19, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- With so many vehicles saturating the automotive market, it can be difficult for consumers to determine which vehicle best suits their needs. One of the most common methods of narrowing down the options is to look exclusively at one of the automotive segments. For example, consumers looking for an extremely efficient car at an affordable price are likely to limit their choices to the vehicles in the compact car segment.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20140319/MN85681)

Even when shopping in a particular segment, however, choosing a vehicle can be difficult as many offer similar capabilities. To make it easier for consumers to determine which of the vehicles in the compact segment is the most capable, Matt Castrucci Honda has added a brand-new comparison to their website which takes an in-depth look at the 2014 Honda Civic vs 2014 Toyota Corolla, two of the best-selling compact cars currently available.

For the last couple of years, the Toyota Corolla has found itself at the top of the compact car segment, but that changed last year when the Corolla was dethroned by the Honda Civic. The change is likely due to the fact that the Honda Civic was completely redesigned for the 2013 model year, which allowed it to out-perform the Corolla in the capabilities that matter most to buyers in the market for a compact car.

For one, the 2014 Honda Civic is more fuel efficient than the Corolla. The Civic is capable of traveling up to 39 mpg on the highway while the Corolla is only able to reach 36 mpg. Despite the added efficiency, the Civic is still more powerful than the Corolla by a difference of nearly 10 horsepower. The four-cylinder engine of the Civic is able to produce an output of 143 horsepower, making it one of the faster compact cars currently available.

Consumers are also sure to appreciate that the 2014 Honda Civic received the coveted Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ rating. The compact car performed extremely well in all five IIHS tests, including the new, rigorous small overlap front test, allowing it to earn the rating. The Corolla on the other hand, did not perform well in all five tests and was not able to achieve the same rating.

To view the complete model comparison, consumers are encouraged to visit the Matt Castrucci Honda website at www.mattcastruccihonda.com. The dealership is also conducting a series of in-brand comparisons on their informative blog. Questions about the comparisons or about the services provided by the dealership can be directed to the Matt Castrucci Honda sales staff, which can be reached through the website, or by phone at 855-699-4147.

Honda City Hybrid confirmed for M’sia – first details

Yes folks, the Honda City Hybrid will be coming to Malaysia. This year, in fact, and as a CKD model too, as confirmed by Honda Malaysia CEO, Yoichiro Ueno. This is the first time, anywhere in the world, that a Honda official has specifically confirmed that such a model exists.

Previously, the company had only hinted that a new hybrid B-segment sedan will be introduced in Japan, which everyone then deduced to be an electric motor-assisted version of the 2014 Honda City. No more conjecture needed, then.

First details of the new model have been announced too. For starters, it’s now known that the City Hybrid will use Honda’s latest Sport Hybrid Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive (i-DCD) one-motor hybrid system that’s in the latest Jazz Hybrid, and not the older Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system.

As per the Jazz Hybrid it’s based on, it will also have a centre-mounted fuel tank, as opposed to the rear-mounted item in the standard petrol model. Furthermore, the hybrid system’s battery pack (likely to be of the lithium-ion variety) will be stored under the rear seats.

That’s all the info we have for now. Stay tuned for more in the coming months.

Honda Confirms NSX Prototype Will go up the Hill at Goodwood

Easily one of the highlights of this year’s edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, set to take place between June 27 and 29, will be a prototype version of Honda’s upcoming NSX hybrid supercar.

It will be joined, at the bottom of the hill, by “a 1989 3.0-litre NSX, once driven by Ayrton Senna himself, and a 2005 3.2-litre, illustrating the original model’s rich history and development.”

However, Honda doesn’t seem to be too interested in releasing any more technical details about the NSX.

They’re just telling us what we already know: power will come from a mid-mounted twin-turbo V6 and the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (or SH-AWD), “an all-new, three-motor high-performance hybrid system that combines torque vectoring all-wheel drive with advanced hybrid efficiency through the use of three electric motors – one motor integrated with the V6 engine and its all-new dual-clutch transmission (DCT) driving the rear wheels, and two motors driving the front wheels.”

The most we’ll get out of this is a video of the car going up the course, shot both officially from onboard and unofficially by the spectators lining the roadside area (behind the usual protective hay bales).
