How Honda Motor Co. Plans to Tap the Monstrous Asian Car Market?

Japanese automaker Honda  (NYSE: HMC  ) forecasts that in its current fiscal year, Asia will account for 90% of its automotive sales growth. The company is building new factories, establishing collaborations, and rolling out new cars to boost its growth in the region. With Honda's sales moderating in the key North American market of late, growth in Asia becomes critical for the company's overall sales. Let's check out how the automaker plans to generate sales momentum from the growing Asian markets.

Asia's biggest growth drivers
Asia's urban population could touch 2.7 billion by 2030, constituting 55% of its entire populace, compared with only 17%, or 232 million, in 1950. Increasing urbanization positively impacts economic expansion, thereby enhancing GDP -- an important growth driver. Better GDP suggests increasing income levels that leave people with higher disposable income, which boosts demand for consumer durables.

The latest Asia and Pacific Regional Economic Outlook from the International Monetary Fund says that the Asian economy could grow 5.5% annually through 2015. The IMF expects the continent to play a crucial role in furthering the global economy, fueled by firm credit growth, increasing export demand, and availability of skilled labor forces.

Automakers are attracted by Asia's low car ownership rates, high population, and rising disposable income. The continent lags way behind advanced economies in car ownership rate, which provides huge room for growth. In developed nations generally more half the population own cars, while in China the car ownership rate is only 80 for every 1,000 people. India's rate is an even lower 50 vehicles per 1,000 people.

Honda derived 38% of its auto sales from the Asian market in the last fiscal year. In fiscal 2015, the company expects its auto sales in Asia outside Japan to grow to 640,000 units, up almost 21% from last year, while sales in Japan are set to grow 20.69% from the previous year, to 980,000 units.

Expansion will boost growth
Honda produced 840,650 units in Japan last year, and added capacity with the newly built Yorii plant that can roll out 250,000 vehicles annually.

Honda collaborates with two Chinese auto companies, Guangqi and Dongfeng, and has a 50% stake in each joint-venture partnership. The joint ventures aim to increase the company's annual production capacity in China to 1.01 million units from the present 870,000. The automaker also plans to begin research and development operations in the country.

India is another market that's becoming increasingly important for Honda thanks to the ever-growing demand for the new City and Amaze models. The automaker has a sales target of 300,000 units in India by 2017. The company's plants in Tapukara and Greater Noida can presently roll out 60,000 units and 120,000 units each year, respectively.

Honda is also aggressively adding capacity in Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. It is building a new factory in Thailand that is estimated to manufacture 120,000 units per year, taking the country's total capacity to 420,000 units, once it starts production in 2015. Its other Thailand facility,in Ayutthaya, will also ramp up production.

Honda's second production line at its Malaysian facility started operations in January and will churn out 100,000 cars every year. Honda also has two plants in Indonesia, one of which is the new Karawang facility, inaugurated this past January. This plant produces the multipurpose Brio and Jazz vehicles.

New launches to augment sales
Honda has figured out that it needs to keep releasing new cars in order to keep the sales momentum going. In fiscal 2014, the automaker launched several popular models in the Asian market. In 2013 it launched the third-generation Fit in Japan, and it was an instant hit. Honda also launched the mini-vehicle N-WGN, the fully remodeled Odyssey, and the compact SUV Vezel in Japan.

The newly introduced 2014 Honda sedans -- City and Amaze -- have sold big in India, with Amaze hitting the 88,000 unit mark. The company is expected to release the Mobilio in India this month, while its variant was unveiled in Indonesia last month. Honda plans to launch 20 new cars over the next couple years in China after the successful Crider and Jade launches there in fiscal 2014. Another revamped model, the Jazz, is lined up for launch in the Thai and Indian markets.

Foolish takeaway
Despite the weakening yen and the Thai crisis, expanding in Asia seems to be a good idea for Honda. The CIJ and ASEAN countries offer ample growth opportunities, and Honda is aggressively adding capacity in the region and rolling out new cars, to capitalize on this.

Warren Buffett's worst auto nightmare (Hint: It's not Tesla)

A major technological shift is happening in the automotive industry. Most people are skeptical about its impact. Warren Buffett isn't one of them. He recently called it a "real threat" to one of his favorite businesses. An executive at Ford called the technology "fantastic." The beauty for investors is that there is an easy way to invest in this megatrend. Click here to access our exclusive report on this stock.

Ford And Honda To Improve US Market Share With New Models

Ford Motor Company and Honda Motor Co Ltd plan to outmaneuver their competition by increasing the number of new models

Ford Motor Company (F), the second-largest automaker in the US, and Japanese automaker Honda Motor Co Ltd (HMC) plan to redesign or replace 28% of their annual sales volume by 2018 compared to the industry average of 23 percent, reports John Murphy, a Bank of America Merrill Lynch auto analyst.

In his “Car Wars” report that analyzes the automotive market for the next four years, Murphy predicts small changes in the market shares of the big players. Ford and Honda are expected to increase their market share by 0.5% each to 16.2% and 10.3%, respectively, due to the introduction of new models. Nissan (NSANY) and European automakers are expected to lose 0.2% in the US and end up with 7.8% and 8.3%, respectively. The rest of the carmakers will maintain their respective market shares.

Also read: US Auto Industry To See Solid Growth In 2014
Greater Product Differentiation Will Improve Market Share

Automakers have long believed that the key to increasing market share is low costs, superior product quality, and product differentiation. John Murphy believes that automakers have found that competing on low costs and on product superiority is near impossible. This leaves product differentiation as the most important driver for increasing market share. Consequently, he based his market share calculation on the number of new model launches and replacement of older models.

Ford is planning to launch new models of the Fiesta and Fusion, as well as a redesigned Mustang and F-series. Honda plans to launch an all new HR-V as well as a redesigned Fit. Increasing market share is the need of the hour for Ford, after its US sales decreased by 6% year-over-year this June, even though the industry recorded an overall increase of 1.2%. Ford has also said it will lose market share in 2014 as it retools its plants to launch record number of vehicles during the year.

Most carmakers in the US have started turning over their product lines at an average of two to three years. A record number of launches in the coming year are further expected to spur demand. Murphy estimates that out of the 175 new models expected over the next four years, a third will be crossovers. Ford has five models of crossovers lined for launch.

Ford traded 0.98% higher on Friday to close at $17.47, while Honda closed 0.09% down to $34.96.

Driven: 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid delivers 50 mpg on the highway!

Toyota grabbed the hybrid market by the horns with the Prius, but Honda is finally fighting back with the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid sedan. The new Accord Hybrid trumps many rivals thanks to its intelligent engineering, spacious cabin, and trademark Honda reliability. And thanks to its surprisingly peppy gas-electric powertrain, this Honda feels right at home in the passing lane.

After years of playing catch-up, it’s nice to have Honda near the head of the hybrid sedan class. The Japanese automaker has a reputation for cutting-edge engineering but, in recent years, Honda’s high tech glow has faded. Toyota got the jump on the hybrid market, while Nissan and Tesla made headlines with electric-powered cars, such as the Model S and Leaf hatchback.

With its most recent refresh, the 2014 Accord looks and drives better than it has in a long time. The addition of the Accord Hybrid helps make a good thing even better, thanks in large part to this sedan’s EPA economy average of 50 mpg in city driving, and 45 mpg on the highway.

That’s better than what you’ll get in the highly-acclaimed Ford Fusion, and it’s nipping at the heels of the 2014 Toyota Prius. Credit the 2.0-liter inline-4 and electric motor, coupled to a lithium-ion battery pack mounted at the rear of the Accord. This powertrain delivers a combined 196-horsepower and 226 lb.-ft. of torque to the front wheels.

What’s most notable about the Accord Hybrid is the way it goes about balancing impressive economy with the kind of enjoyable, easy-to-use driving dynamics that we know Honda can achieve, when it wants to. (The dynamics are almost good enough to forget the limp and completely listless feel of the current Honda Insight…almost.)

The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring has a starting price of $35,695, including destination charge.

The Accord feels light on its fleet, with crisp steering and a suspension that’s slightly on the firmer side of what you’ll find in the family sedan segment. For me, the stiffer ride is a pleasant trade-off for extra road feel and control in this front-wheel-drive sedan.

I’ll admit it, I had some worries the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) could spoil the fun. In other vehicles, CVTs can prove maddeningly reluctant to rev when you want them to, or be less frantic and noisy when you’re cruising along. Thankfully, the Accord Hybrid's CVT behaved perfectly during my week-long test drive.

Press the gas pedal and the run from zero to 60 mph takes about 7.5 seconds. That would have been sports sedan territory not too long ago – now, this level of acceleration marks the Accord Hybrid as one of the peppier mainstream fuel-sippers.

Despite it's surprising performance levels, the Accord Hybrid doesn't exactly stand out in a crowd. The latest Accord is handsome but, like many cars in this class, the exterior styling simmers rather than sizzles. Still, the cool blue accents on the grille and headlights of the Hybrid are a classy touch. I was surprised that just about everyone – from parking valets, to friends and family – noticed them.

The cabin has that Honda airiness that I’ve always enjoyed. All the controls are logically placed, and the gauges in front of the driver are incredibly clear and simple. This is the kind of car that feels very familiar and comfortable within the first few miles of driving it.

My only major complaint is with the split-screen on the center of the dash. In my test car, the upper portion contained the navigation system, while the lower screen was devoted to the audio system. It looks nice but, in practice, I found it distracting and an over-complicated solution for a simple problem. Make one large and easy-to-use screen, Honda.
The cabin materials feel solid and the overall interior has a pleasant, airy feel to it. The cabin materials feel solid and the overall interior has a pleasant, airy feel to it.
Previous Next

The cabin materials feel solid and the overall interior has a pleasant, airy feel to it.
The split-screen dash layout in the Accord Hybrid proved frustrating to use. A single, larger screen would be a better solution.
The rear seat of the Accord Hybrid is spacious and has plenty of legroom.

There is plenty of space for front and rear passengers, but the hybrid powertrain takes a noticeable 3 cubic foot chunk out of luggage space, leaving a total of 12.7 cu. ft. That loss doesn’t sound like much, yet it makes a big impact on ultimate load-lugging because the split-folding rear seatback also gets the heave-ho in the Accord Hybrid. If you’re seriously considering this car, keep in mind that bulky items are going to be strapped to the roof, or have to get left behind.

The Accord Hybrid costs approximately $2-grand more than hybrid-powered rivals such as the Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry. The Accord gets better mileage, however, so you could argue that eventually you’ll make up that extra outlay.

That argument is harder to justify when you’re comparing the Hybrid to the base Accord, powered by 185-hp 4-cylinder engine. Coupled to the CVT, the Accord LX returns a stout 27/36-mpg during city and highway driving. The Hybrid trumps it, of course, and to be honest, I’ve never much bought into the idea that people are cross-shopping base models with their pricier hybrid siblings.

It makes for more cynical auto reviews, but that’s about it.

And remember, the Accord Hybrid is more than a fancy powertrain and mileage figures. The range-topping Hybrid Touring trim level is loaded with convenience and safety features. These include Honda’s satellite-linked navigation with voice recognition, adaptive cruise control, forward collision and lane departure warning systems, push button start, power front seats, XM radio with Pandora compatibility, USB interface, 360-watt 7-speaker audio system with subwoofer, and a leather interior, amongst other items.

One of the coolest, and most safety conscious features, is the Honda LaneWatch system. Click the right turn signal, and a camera located in the right side mirror projects a wide angle view of the car’s right-hand side on the dashboard’s upper screen. The system is one of the smartest safety advancements I’ve experienced for the 2014 model year.

And that’s the perfect segway into a summary of the Accord Hybrid which, after a week behind the wheel, proved itself to be one of the best hybrids available today. A clever powertrain and precise feel marks the Accord Hybrid as a fuel-saver that doesn’t sacrifice the experience of driving. The split-screen dash isn’t perfect, and the trunk is downright stingy, but if you’re in the market for a comfortable hybrid that’s loaded with intelligent engineering, you’ve got to add this Honda to your shopping list.

2000 Miles in the 2014 HFP Honda Accord Coupe

We review the newest 6-speed V6 Accord from Honda's lineup

Before we even get into the story let us say, YES we know a Honda Accord V6 isn’t exactly the most exciting car to take on a road trip across the Pacific Northwest. No it’s not turbo charged, no it doesn’t have an insane amount of horsepower, and no it’s not built for a racetrack, but what it is built for, it’s exceptional at. You could say that the 2014 Honda Accord V6 is the perfect Grand Touring car, and that’s exactly why we were excited to put over 2,000 miles on this bad boy on a trip up the coast.

First off, let’s start off with why…. Why did we grab an Accord and head north? Well, to be completely honest, the only way you can get to know a new car is by putting in some serious windshield time and with a total of 2,200 miles behind we really got to know what this car was all about. Why did we choose an Accord? If you think about it, it’s the closest thing that Honda has to a sports car that’s out right now. Lucky for us, the Accord we chose featured Honda’s 6-speed Manual transmission with hill assist, (no more rolling backwards down a hill at a stop light) and their 278 horsepower V6. Mate a manual transmission to just about any peppy motor and you will always have a fun car on your hands just about every time.

Speaking of, the V6 that Honda features in the new accord is beyond fun. Speed builds very quickly in that car and multiple times we had to have a double take at the speedo because we were doing triple digit speeds without knowing it. On top of that, the motor just sounds so good inside the cabin; you just want to rev it out all the time. While 278 horsepower and 252 lb-ft of torque don’t seem like a lot, somehow in that car it seemed like it was almost too much. In fact, after we pulled over to take a picture of the Oregon / CA border we decided to gun it back on to the freeway and we legitimately smoked the tires all the way through second gear.

Other than the motor and transmission, two of our other favorite features on the accord had to have been the fuel economy and the side view mirror camera. Honda claims an average of 28mpg’s highway in the new Accord but even with us behind the wheel, we set a cruising speed of 80mph and got a surprising 26.9-mpg’s. Over the course of 2,200 miles that great gas mileage really added up.

The side mirror rear view camera was one of the coolest things we’ve seen in a moderately priced production car yet. Every time you initiated the right blinker the entertainment display switched to the side mirror rear camera so you could see when you were clear to merge over. There was even a button on the blinker lever that allowed you to turn that camera on an off anytime you wanted.

Overall, we’d like to say that this Accord is a major step in the right direction for Honda. Not only did the big bodied Grand touring coupe make us feel like we were in a sports car at some points, but it got exceptional gas mileage, was packed with technology goodies and it didn’t look all that bad. Remember the 90’s when Accords were the golden children of the British Touring Car Championship? All your friends who owned one thought they had raddest touring car in town. I doubt that the Accord will ever be that car again, but we can say this is probably the best Accord we’ve driven in the past 20 years.

Comparison review: Eleven compact sedans -- the best and the worst

There's a lot to love in a good compact car.

With lower prices, better fuel economy, and easier maneuverability than a midsize sedan, today's best compacts – the best-selling Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, and their competitors – also couple unexpected substance with the expected level of value. Even south of $20,000, you can expect fairly high levels of comfort, quality, safety, driving fun, and premium features.

The best compact sedans pull this off, at any rate. Back-to-back test drives of eleven such vehicles – nearly every vehicle in the market segment – helped reveal which is which. The different models were each designed with particular tradeoffs that will fit some buyers better than others – style versus interior space, ride versus handling, luxury versus value, and others. Some of these cars, too, have flaws that keep them from achieving even the balance they intended to strike.

This comparison relies on test drives and analyses of price, safety and fuel economy of the eleven compact sedans to pick winners and losers for different types of customers, and to rank them from top to bottom overall.

There has been significant changeover in this class since this reviewer compared ten compact sedans three years ago. Chrysler re-entered the segment with the Dodge Dart. The Kia Forte, Mazda3, Nissan Sentra, Subaru Impreza, and Toyota Corolla have been fully redesigned. The Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Volkswagen Jetta have been updated. Working to hold their own against the newer competitors are the Ford Focus, often ranked the world's best-selling car; and the Chevrolet Cruze, 2011's defending champion.

Chosen for this comparison were cars equipped with an automatic transmission; power windows, locks and mirrors; alloy wheels; Bluetooth connectivity; and an infotainment screen, or the nearest equivalent. So equipped, the cars' estimated transaction prices ranged from $17,000 to $21,000 – no pittance, but still a price point that delivers a lot of car for the money.

The only current 2014-model compact sedan excluded was the Mitsubishi Lancer, a slow-selling vehicle that has barely changed since it placed last in this reviewer's comparison five years ago; also left our are models sold only as hatchbacks, including the Scion tC and Volkswagen Golf.

Honda expands airbag recall to include California vehicles

Honda has expanded its recall over Takata airbag inflators, adding California to the list of states covered by the regional campaign.

The company initially recalled more than two million vehicles in Southern states and US territories known to maintain high humidity during part of the year. The chemical propellants are said to be affected by moisture in the air, contributing to inflator explosions that have been blamed on several shrapnel injuries and airbag failures.

The Japanese automaker is now preparing to fix approximately three million vehicles, after a 2005 Accord's airbag inflator exploded during an accident that occurred in California.

The list of affected vehicles remains unchanged, including 11 different 2001-2007 Honda and Acura models in the regional recall. The company also issued a nationwide recall that lists seven models with 2002 or 2003 model years.

The defective components have affected millions of vehicles from eight major automakers, potentially expanding to nine if Mitsubishi joins the crowd as expected.

Review: 2014 Honda N One Premium Tourer

To Americans, the term "K-Car" is generally associated with a sub-par compact built by Chrysler and sold under a variety of nameplates in the 1980s and 1990s. The term has an entirely different meaning in Japan, where a kei car is a special type of car that is less expensive to buy, register, and insure than a standard car due to its almost Matchbox-like size.

The current regulations dictate a kei car must stretch no more than 133.8 inches from bumper to bumper, 78.7 inches tall and 58.2 inches from side to side. To put those figures into perspective, Chevrolet's entry-level Spark measures 144 inches long, 62 inches wide and 61 inches tall. Additionally, a kei car's engine displacement is strictly limited to 660 cubic centimeters and its output can't exceed 63 horsepower.

Kei cars have been sold in the United States in the past: The Subaru 360 - the automaker's first-ever car - was a kei car, and the Honda N600 was an evolution of the N360 kei car that was introduced in Japan in 1967. However, they are generally ill-suited to today's market due to their pint-sized dimensions and many of them are even too small for Europe.

Eager to see what it's like to live with a kei car on a daily basis, we headed to Japan to spend time behind the wheel of the retro-styled Honda N One.

What Is It?
Introduced in 2012, the N One eschews the "exciting H" design language seen on the Fit and the upcoming HR-V because it was designed as a homage to the aforementioned N360. Styling cues like the N360's round headlights, its characteristic beltline crease and its vertical tail lamps have been carried over to the new model, creating an unmistakable visual connection between the two cars. However, the N One packs four doors for practicality purposes and it is noticeably bigger than its truly tiny predecessor.

Like most kei cars, the N One is sold exclusively in Japan and Honda is not currently planning on exporting it abroad. Interestingly, it is billed as a more premium alternative to other kei cars and it can be decked out with a wide array of customization options including two-tone paint jobs, several different alloy wheel designs, aerodynamic add-ons and a long list of decorative trim pieces.

Life Aboard
The N One is surprisingly well built inside, shattering the notion that small is a synonym for Spartan in the automotive world. The other surprising aspect is that Honda has maximized the use of space to an extent that is almost unbelievable. For example, the center console has been thrown out to clear up space for two wide seats that join together to create a makeshift bench seat. Kei cars are often parked in impossibly small spaces, and the pseudo-bench seat setup facilitates the task of entering and exiting the car from either side.

The N One more than makes up for its lack of a center console by offering several storage bins cleverly scattered throughout the cockpit, four cup holders located on either end of the dashboard and in the door pockets as well as a grocery bag hook in the passenger foot well.

Don't let the N One's small size fool you into thinking it's little more than a glorified motorcycle. The hatchback can comfortably seat four normal-sized adults while carrying several bags of groceries in the trunk. Alternatively, Honda's Magic Seat technology (also found in the Fit) makes it possible to fold up the rear seat bottoms to obtain a generous amount of vertical space, or to fold the rear seat backs down to create a flat loading floor.

A large touch screen that runs the car's infotainment system sticks out from the top of the dashboard. Steering wheel-mounted controls allow the driver to change the radio station and adjust the volume, but there are no redundant knobs or switches for the rest of the infotainment system's functions. Clearly, the N One is aimed at a young and technology-focused target audience.

Honda sees India among its top five markets by 2017

Looking at small car below Brio

Buoyed by the success of its latest launches in India, Japanese car maker Honda Motor Co sees the country becoming its fourth largest market by 2017.

Its local unit Honda Cars India, which saw a growth of 83% last fiscal, has set an ambitious goal of selling 3 lakh cars by 2017, almost six times higher than its 2011-12 volumes.

This would put India only behind the US, China and Japan. At present, India is the sixth-biggest market for Honda globally.

The launch of compact sedan Amaze with its new diesel engine last year and the new City in January brought higher volumes for the company, which was once struggling to set its strong foothold in the country.

Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, managing officer, Honda Motor Co & representative of development, purchasing and production in Asia and Oceania region, told dna that 83% growth last fiscal was beyond expectations, and the next level of growth will be driven by new products and a stronger network.

The company managed to almost double its sales in fiscal 2013-14 to 134,399 units in the domestic market, from 54,427 units it sold in the country in fiscal 2011-12, as per the data by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

“We had to adopt to change in market conditions in India like currency fluctuations and increasing demand for diesel vehicles. Hence, we focused more on localising our products to address the currency fluctuation issue. Introduction of diesel engine also helped in expanding our offerings,” said Matsumoto.

The company is currently in the process of increasing its number of dealers, especially in Tier 2 and 3 cities, which will constitute 75% of its new dealers.

While on the new products side, Matsumoto said the company is now studying various segments, including a small car (below Brio).

“We realise that this market (small cars) is the biggest market in India but at the same time its the most difficult market to operate in. We want to be the most trusted company when it comes to customer satisfaction, quality, technology, etc. Hence, we are still evaluating.”

Honda Cars India on Thursday launched its Mobilio in Mumbai. The company has received almost 6,000 bookings since it started its pre-bookings on July 8. The company may look at ramping up capacity at its Tapukara, Rajasthan plant. It currently operates single shift at the plant, and will decide on the second shift depending on the response for Mobilio. Honda will also launch its new premium hatchback Jazz by end of this fiscal.

But MPGe is a lot less intuitive than miles per gallon used to be

The 2014 Honda Motor Co Ltd (ADR) (NYSE:HMC) (TYO:7267) Accord Plug-in Hybrid shows how much progress has been made with electrification, rated as 115 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) for short trips and 46 MPGe for longer trips that also use gas, according to the US Department of Energy’s fuel economy website. But the slightly odd MPGe measure doesn’t tell drivers what they really want to know, which is that many of them will almost never have to refill the tank if they buy the new Honda Accord Plug-in hybrid.

Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid saves drivers $7,000 over five years

Since miles per gallon is familiar, the DOJ continues to use a similar measure when ranking electric vehicles and hybrids (the Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) Model S is rated at 95 MPGe) by treating one gallon of gas as 33.7kWh of energy, regardless of the source. From a pure engineering perspective this does tell you how efficiently the car converts potential energy, but drivers want to know how much they will have to spend on fuel (or electricity), how often they’ll have to wait in line at the gas station, and maybe that their new car is better for the environment.

In the case of the Honda Motor Co Ltd (ADR) (NYSE:HMC) (TYO:7267) Accord Plug-in Hybrid, drivers can go 13 miles on a full charge without using any gasoline and even after that the engine and brakes recharge the battery so that it still improves fuel efficiency. The DOE estimates that drivers will save $7,000 over five years assuming 45% highway driving and 55% city driving, clocking 15,000 miles per year.

MPGe doesn’t tell drivers what they want to know

Even with the $7000 in savings, the Honda Motor Co Ltd (ADR) (NYSE:HMC) (TYO:7267) Accord Plug-in Hybrid costs about $40,000, so people on a budget will have plenty of more affordable options. But as fuel efficiency standards become stricter and battery technology improves, electrification will become a lot more common. Miles per gallon was always a rough estimate that changed based on everything from the weather outside to the amount of air in your tires, but at least it had the benefit of being intuitive. When the latest hybrid is judged to be more fuel efficient than all-electric cars, the conversation has split.

The DOE also estimates that the annual fuel cost for the new Honda Motor Co Ltd (ADR) (NYSE:HMC) (TYO:7267) is about $950, versus $650 for a Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) Model S with the same driving patterns, even though the Honda has the better MPGe.

New Delhi/Jakarta: Honda Motor Co is looking to boost its market share in India with the launch of a seven-seater, multi-purpose vehicle which has been a runaway success for the Japanese carmaker in Indonesia.

Since the launch in January of the Mobilio in Indonesia, Honda's sales and market share in the Southeast Asian country have soared, hurting rivals such as Toyota Motor Co and Nissan Motor Co.

Honda has received bookings for 5,800 Mobilio units in India in a two-week period prior to the launch on Wednesday. Toyota sold 5,377 of its multi-purpose car Innova in June in Asia's third-largest economy.

"The Mobilio has already enjoyed a successful run in Indonesia. I am confident the Mobilio will repeat this success in the Indian market as well," Honda's managing officer, Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, said at the launch in Delhi.

India and Indonesia have growing middle-income populations and the two Asian countries share a culture of joint families, creating strong demand for cars such as the Mobilio, analysts say.

While Indonesia is an established market for multi-purpose vehicles, which accounted for more than half the 1.23 million cars sold in the country in 2013, in India they make up only a fraction of total passenger car sales.

In India, such vehicles are mainly used by corporates and taxi providers to ferry people, and demand for personal use has been low but is expected to grow at a rapid pace.

Improving road infrastructure which has increased inter-city travel for work and leisure is seen creating demand for cars such as Mobilio, said Jnaneswar Sen, senior vice president-marketing and sales at Honda Cars India Ltd.

Sales of multi-purpose vehicles in India are likely to nearly double from 2011 to more than one million in 2021, according to IHS Automotive.

Renault SA and Nissan, through its Datsun brand, also plan to launch multi-purpose vehicles in India later this year to tap the growing demand.

New segments

Honda's Indian unit will account for 25 per cent of the Japanese carmaker's Asia Pacific sales target of 1.2 million units by March 2017, and Mobilio will be a key contributor, the carmaker said.

"We have to expand our volumes so our strategy is to enter new segments," said Mr Sen, adding that competition in this segment was also comparatively weaker and an early entry would help Honda cement its place.

In India, Mobilio will compete with Maruti Suzuki Ltd's Ertiga, Toyota's Innova and Nissan's Evalia. The ex-showroom price in Delhi of the base variant of the petrol engine car is Rs. 649,000 ($10,800 at $1= 60.1800 Indian rupees), cheaper than its rivals.

In Indonesia, since its launch Honda has sold 46,000 Mobilio that competes with Toyota's Avanza and Daihatsu's Xenia cars.

This has helped the company increase its market share to 12.9 per cent at end-June from 8.2 per cent a year earlier, PT Honda Prospect Motor Indonesia, Honda's local distributor, said.

Toyota's market share fell to 34.9 per cent at end-June from 35.7 per cent a year ago, according to industry body Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries, and could force the carmaker to start discounting its cars.

"We believe to retain its market share within the next 12-18 months Astra International (Toyota's local partner) should offer an attractive sales discount to the customers," said Frederick Tanggela, an analyst with Jakarta-based Trimegah Securities.

Honda Mobilio MPV launched at a starting price of Rs 6.49 lakh

NEW DELHI: Honda Cars India on Wednesday launched its new Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), the Mobilio at a starting price of Rs 6.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The petrol car will cost Rs 6.49 lakh for the E variant; Rs 7.50 lakh for S variant and Rs 8.76 lakh for the V variant.

The diesel variants have been priced between Rs 7.89 lakh to Rs 10.86 lakh. The seven-seater MVP will take on the likes of Maruti SuzukiBSE 0.28 % Ertiga, Mahindra Xylo, Nissan Evalia and even the Toyota Innova.

Its closest competitor, the Ertiga petrol starts at Rs. 5.8 lakh and goes up to to Rs. 7.3 lakh while Diesel starts at Rs. 7.22 lakh and goes up to Rs. 8.49 lakh.

Honda said that the name Mobilio has been coined from English words mobility and mobile. Honda Mobilio's deliveries will begin from today.

The Honda Mobilio MPV is 4.4-metre long with a wheelbase of 2.6-metre and has a ground clearance of 185mm. While it looks similar to the Amaze sedan and Brio hatchback, it manages to be distinct with its stretched out proportions and non-boxy looks. The Mobilio looks the most distinct from the rear as all resemblance to the hatch and a sedan ends with a new set of tail lamps and plenty of curves.

Moving to the interior - the Mobilio gets a two-tone colour scheme, which makes the cabin feel roomy. The seats are flexible with plenty of storage space, with a generous amount of cabin space and good amount of headroom. What is impressive is that even the third row seat gets adequate knee room and can be used for long drives. The interior of the Mobilio is similar to what we have on the Brio and Amaze.

The variant where the entertainment system is similar to the new City, which also serves as a screen for the reversing camera has been kept on hold because of a technical glitch. The top end variant also gets faux wood fittings on the dash and the door, and faux leather seats. Base cargo are is at 223 L which can be enhanced to 512L in the third row fold configuration.

The Mobilio will be powered by the new 1.5-litre turbocharged Earth Dreams diesel engine that does duty on the Amaze and City churning out power of 100ps@3600 rpm and torque of 200 Nm@ 1750 rpm. The diesel engine continues to be noisy but Honda has done a better job in insulating the noise out in the Mobilio.

The petrol variant gets the 1.5-litre i-VTEC unit producing a power of 119ps@6600 rpm and 145Nm of torque and is peppy and is the same that powers the City. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

Honda’s campaign gives wings to nation’s dreams to fly

LUCKNOW: Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Private Limited (HMSI), the only Honda in India recently commenced its latest corporate campaign titled 'Honda is Honda'. In Phase I, the campaign was teased at various social sites and blogs from July 14-18 followed by the TV teaser which was on air from July 15 to 18.

Phase II shall see the 360 degree campaign starting across TV, print, radio, outdoor to even cinema. Engaging with his 10 million fans, Honda's brand ambassador Akshay Kumar too will promote the campaign through his social page.

The new corporate campaign 'Honda is Honda' aims to demonstrate that firstly, Honda is the partner of choice for Indian two-wheeler customers in pursuit of their dreams. Secondly, to firmly embed Honda's wings as the symbol of HMSI's commitment to enable people to achieve the lift they seek.

The creative agency for the campaign is Dentsu Marcom. At a time when Honda goes about fulfilling the mobility dreams of every Indian, it becomes important to go beyond mere awareness creation to become a part and parcel of Indian two-wheeler customer's emotional landscape. It is in this context, that Honda (symbolized by Wing-mark for its two-wheeler operations globally) is reinforcing its differentiated brand imagery with 'Honda is Honda' campaign, said the agency.

HMSI said, "With 'Honda is Honda' we want to reinforce that 'wings' mean Honda's time tested reliability, technology, legacy of excellence, quality and innovation. In total, Honda's wings enable people to chase their dreams.

The corporate film shows an entire town intrigued by a spectacle taking shape high up in the sky. Little girls and boys, elderly men, rural women to global travellers, working professionals to monks, all are seen looking up to the sky. People are seen peeping out of windows, standing on terraces and coming together to watch the spectacle. One of them is Honda's brand ambassador Akshay Kumar. Finally, the divers come together to form the wing aerially. The spectators are thrilled to see Honda Wing high up in the clouds.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India launched their first corporate campaign with 'Hamein Jaldi Hain' campaign which spoke about how the country was in a hurry and how Honda can help the countrymen and women in their hurriedness to their dream destinations. In its second campaign, this ride was established as a flight.

When birds fly, they lift their feet off ground. The brand had this incredible symbol, which we hadn't leveraged. So it all came together in 'zameen se jab hum paanv uthate hain, pankh apne aap lag jaate hain.' Brand Honda gives an experience no other brand can" said Titus Upputuru, NCD, Dentsu Marcom.

Honda asks dealers to add service
Goal: More hours and bays by 2018

Honda dealer David Griffith's service center is open seven days a week. But now American Honda Motor Co. wants him to extend his Saturday hours, he said.

Griffith, who owns Griffith Motors in The Dalles, Ore., isn't so sure. "I don't have the demand to justify adding hours right now," he said.

Griffith is one of hundreds of Honda and Acura dealers that American Honda is asking to add service bays, hours or both by 2018 to accommodate the automaker's forecast of rising sales. Honda's requests are not mandatory, but some dealers said they feel pressure to make the changes.

In May, the automaker recalculated its so-called Minimum Requirements for Facilities. The new calculation anticipates future sales plus the likely longevity of models on the road in each market. Past requirements relied only on potential sales, Honda said. The result is many Honda and Acura dealers will be asked to change their service operations to accommodate growing demand by 2018.
Bolstering

Besides customer retention, Honda wants its dealers to compete better against independent service shops, said Jenny Gilger, American Honda's senior manager for service operations, in Torrance, Calif.

"Financially the dealers are going to lose if they don't step up to provide the capacity the market needs. They will be leaving money on the table," Gilger said.

There are 1,044 Honda and 273 Acura U.S. dealerships. Honda will not disclose how many it is asking to improve their service operations. Gilger said that as a result of the 2018 requirement recalculation, 10 percent more dealers will be asked to make changes compared with the number of dealers Honda had previously identified as having deficient operations.

To-do list
Honda is asking some dealers to

• Extend service hours

• Add service bays, technicians

• Remodel flexibly, in case more bays are needed later

Case by case

"Each dealer's situation is unique and will be handled on a case-by-case basis," a Honda spokesman wrote in an e-mail. "Some may need to make minor adjustments, some major, and many in between." Honda will not help to finance any expansions.

In late June, Honda presented the updated requirements to a group of California dealers at a regional meeting, said a dealer who was there and asked not to be identified. The dealer said Honda's discussion of extended service operations is not new, but this time the request is "more formalized."

He said he would have to hire several service employees to extend his service hours by 15 hours a week, as Honda requested. He also would have to advertise the new hours. He questions whether he will earn enough revenue to offset the added costs. He said it will be a "tough call," but he feels pressure to do it.

"When there's a request made and supportive documents behind it and we don't fulfill that request, there are typically unintended consequences to us that we see down the road," he said.
Payoff

The payoff for expanding service operations can be substantial.

Brian Lam, platform vice president at DCH Honda in Paramus, N.J., completed a new service building four months ago.

Lam said Honda's been telling his store "for years" that service demand in his market was growing.

"We agreed, but we didn't want to do an offsite service facility," Lam said.

DCH Honda, which sells about 8,200 new and used vehicles a year, was recently able to buy adjacent land to build the new service center. The dealership now has 24 service bays, up from 16 in the old building, and eventually will have 39. Lam also hired about 12 additional service technicians. The store's monthly gross profit in service rose to $675,000 from about $575,000 in those four months. In two years he expects it to rise to $1.25 million.

Honda has talked to Paragon Honda in Queens, N.Y., about increasing its hours or adding service bays, said General Manager Brian Benstock. Paragon Honda's service center went to seven days a week in the late 1990s, he said. Now he may extend hours well into the night.

"More and more dealers are doing" Sunday service, Benstock said. "You pay rent seven days a week, you might as well make money seven days a week."

http://www.providencejournal.com/cars/car-doctor/20140719-car-doctor-honda-transmissions-are-a-bit-different.ece

Car Doctor: Honda transmissions are a bit different

Q: We have a 2003 Honda Accord with 120,000 miles on it. The owner’s manual recommends changing the automatic transmission fluid every 120,000 miles or six years, whichever comes first. As far as we can recall, we never had this fluid changed. Our mechanic tried yesterday, but said the drain bolt was stuck and he did not want to break it. What would you recommend we do?

— Joshua

A: Honda transmissions, unlike some other vehicles, don’t have a conventional transmission pan. In your car there is a large magnetic drain bolt that needs to be removed to change the transmission fluid. This plug is quite robust and it is unlikely it would break when trying to remove it. The other option would be flushing the transmission using a “power-flush” machine. I spoke with Ron Andreozzi, the technical representative from BG products, who verified that this would be a workable solution. In this scenario, the transmission cooling lines are disconnected and a machine forces new fluid into the transmission, which forces out the old fluid. His word of caution is to use Honda fluid or a high-quality replacement fluid such as the type used by BG. My personal experience has been that some aftermarket fluids don’t hold up well in Honda vehicles and can actually change shift characteristics.
Change oil before and after storage

Q: I go south to escape the cold for about five months each winter. I change my oil just before leaving, then, when I return I have it changed again about a month after the return. Is it wasteful to change it before I leave or should I leave it and change it immediately when I return? Or should I just change it before I put the car in storage and then when I return not worry about the oil until the next scheduled oil change?

— WFB, Wakefield

A: The best thing to do is to change the oil before and after storage. Although, if this were my car, and being a bit frugal, I would leave the old oil in the engine (providing it is relatively clean) and once you return, thoroughly warm up the engine then change the oil as soon as practical. When exposed to normal conditions, any oil will start to pick up moisture as soon as it comes in contact with the air. Oil is quite hygroscopic, which means it picks up moisture easily, so in this case even new oil that has sat in an engine for five months would have some level of contamination.
Ford F150 stalls when ‘floored’

Q: I have a Ford F150 plow/dump-run truck with a big V-8 engine and dual fuel tanks. The truck starts OK but will stall if I “floor” the gas pedal. What should I do?

— Buddy J

A: There are many items that need to be checked. The problem could be related to the ignition, a lack of fuel or a problem with one of the vehicle’s sensors, such as the throttle-position switch or the mass air-flow sensor. In addition, this model truck has had a history of problems with the fuel pump and tank switch. It may be time to take the truck to an ASE certified technician for diagnosis and repair.
’98 Jeep stutters and shakes

Q: I have a 1998 Jeep that I leave up at my cabin at Lake George. This is a basic Jeep that has a four-cylinder and a stick shift. From time to time, I have had problems starting my car in the mornings. After some hesitation it will start, but it seems like it throws my fuel injectors all out of whack. Once I get going, my car will stutter and shake as I let off the clutch and accelerate. Once I get to a certain point it will go smoothly, but only after a session of working the gas and clutch in tandem. Is the starting problem the battery? Is the stuttering problem because of the starting issues, or injector issues?

— Ryan

A: It is possible these problems are related to ignition or fuel-injection. One possibility is that one of the fuel injectors will leak and foul a spark plug. Once the car is running for a while, the plug will clear up and the engine will run OK. Since you don’t use this Jeep every day, leave it with a qualified repair shop so they can experience the problem and recommend repairs.

2014 Honda Civic Si still struts but needs a bit more stride

Humble Hondas never wear purple.

They celebrate sensibility — kind of like the guy down the street who dons goggles and elbow-length rubber gloves to pull weeds.

(I guess you can never be too careful with aggressive clumps of Johnson grass.)

Hondas carry teachers and accountants, preachers and clerks — without a single sputter or shudder.

I’ve even heard that Honda stereos won’t play the Blasters or the Buzzcocks — too much bashing and thrashing about for their sensitive electronics.

That is, all Hondas but the Civic Si, which apparently took its name from frequent frat-boy road trips to rowdy Mexican border towns.

It sleeps in on Mondays.

I always interpreted Si as the Honda Yes, a smirking, spirited, high-performance Civic that revs to 7,000 rpm with a sneer and slides luridly around every corner.

It was the Honda hoon — or maybe the Hoonda.

But, hey, even rebels age and move to North Dallas to get married and take up golf.

Maybe that’s what happened to the 2014 Honda Civic Si I had recently, a coupe cloaked in end-of-the-world red but civilized enough to share garage space with an Odyssey minivan.

Still lean and more refined than ever, the new Si felt kind of like someone polished the party animal out of it — for better or worse.

Honda pumps up and tightens down Si models, swapping in a 205-horsepower 2.4-liter four for the Civic’s standard 1.8-liter grocery-getter.

In addition to the 60-horsepower increase, the Si gets tighter steering, a limited-slip differential, firmer suspension and — for this year — 18-inch wheels with 225/40 tires.

In a near-perfect shade of red, it absolutely shouts hot hatch.

All of the grille pieces and inlets up front are blacked out, of course, but in an unusual gloss tone.

While the headlamps look common as table salt, the body sports some nifty character lines atop the front fenders and through the doors that keep it looking fit. It also gets visual help from a gracefully curved top that sweeps into a short trunk.

Though the rear fenders looked a bit thick to me, the Si has nice proportions and stance.

I could live without the “i-VTEC DOHC” in silver letters in front of the rear wheels — engine gibberish that means nothing to most people.

But given some of the criticism directed at recent Civics for their uninspired styling, this is a nice-looking car.

I just wish it had a little better performance to back up the fine lines.

Not that there’s anything shabby about a 0-to-60 run in 6.5 seconds. But the Si’s performance trails the longtime hot-hatch leader, the Volkswagen GTI, as well as the brash new Ford Focus ST.

Both of those Mighty Mouse hatches are turbocharged, while the Si remains normally aspirated.

Handling

Granted, the Si’s fairly large 2.4-liter four is smooth and refined, with a rich-sounding exhaust note and silky idle — pretty typical Honda traits.

It also offers reasonably good low- and mid-range torque, powering effortlessly around corners at low revs in second gear.

But the Si from a couple of years ago was a lovably cranky howler, steadfastly refusing to dish out any power at all until it zinged past 5,000 rpm.

From 5,000 to 7,000-plus, though, the old Si surged forward abruptly with a sinister little high-pitched growl, blasting happily to the red line.

It dished out all sorts of surprises and excitement — kind of like your significant other, I’m sure.

Although the four-banger in the new Si can also spin to 7,000 rpm, it doesn’t provide much snap beyond 5,000 rpm. You get the sense that the car has traded its tattered black-leather jacket for a tweed sports coat.

Fuel economy from the relatively large four is also about average: 22 miles per gallon city, 31 on the highway.

Like the previous-gen Si, the new car offered a smooth, sweet-shifting six-speed manual and light, positive clutch, but they weren’t quite as much fun to play with.

Similarly, while the Si weighs in commendably at around 3,000 pounds, its handling didn’t feel as precise and tenacious as the previous Yes.

The steering was light and quick, but I didn’t think the car turned into corners quite as aggressively as before.

Moreover, sometimes in tight curves, the rear multi-link suspension squirmed a bit — though the body stayed planted. (Maybe I was just sawing away too much at the steering wheel, Jeff Gordon-style.)

While the Si remains a good-handling front-wheel-drive compact that rarely lapses into understeer, I doubt it could get by a GTI or Focus ST on the track.

Inside view

On the positive side of the performance ledger, the $25,000 Si rode better than the GTI or Focus ST, sailing over smooth streets with a nice mix of firm and flexible.

Likewise, the Si displays some needed maturity inside.

Mine showed up with a red and black interior that looked fairly high-end for a Civic.

As Honda likes to do with many of its cars, the Si had a slightly odd two-tier black dashboard formed from fairly high-quality plastic.

A digital speedometer, nanny shift light and fuel gauge resided on the upper tier, while a large conventional tach lived downstairs.

Meanwhile, a rectangular-shaped center stack housed a smallish 7-inch screen with simple buttons for the climate-control system — something we simple drivers much prefer.

Although the red in the center of the seats didn’t match the exterior of the Si, they looked OK and had supportive bolsters and good stitching.

Likewise, the door panels were mostly hard black plastic but were spiced up with curves, black cloth centers and some red stitching.

In addition, I could fit into the back seat fairly well and didn’t have to struggle much getting in and out — meaning most of your preteen kids can ride back there with their digital devices and not even realize they’ve left home.

As Honda proved with the new Accord, it can quickly fix styling and other complacency issues.

The Si has a solid foundation, silky engine, decent handling and reasonably good value.

Honda just needs to say “yes” to a couple of handling tweaks and a turbocharger or some other modification that will add 30 to 50 horsepower.

Put the smirk back in the Si, I say.

S2000 is go! Honda greenlights mid-engined sports coupe

Read more: http://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/s2000-go-honda-greenlights-mid-engined-sports-coupe/#ixzz39anBQWWq

In May, we reported that Honda was planning to revive the famed S2000 nameplate with 350 horsepower and all-wheel drive. Now, Honda has reportedly greenlit the program.

Like the previous S2000, the new car will have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder at its heart, but that’s where the similarities end. Motoring is reporting that Honda has settled on a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, with the turbocharged four-banger from the Civic Type-R supplying power.

Like the upcoming NSX, the S2000 will also have an electric motor bumping combined output to around 365 hp, but the dispatch makes no mention of the aforementioned AWD option. Previous sources reported the next-gen sports coupe would have a simplified version of the gas-electric traction system from the upcoming NSX.

For now, we’ll have to assume the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission sends power to the rear wheels only. We’ll keep you updated when the information is confirmed by Honda.

Could the new S2K be even better than the original? It’s too early to tell, but there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

Below the new S2000 will be the Honda’s upcoming “open-top sports-type minivehicle,” but you may prefer the less wordy S660 nameplate. Also on the horizon for the Japanese automaker is the next-generation NSX, which will have a hybrid powertrain, Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive, and a combined output of 560 hp and 650 pound-feet of torque.

Motoring’s sources say the S2K will be built alongside the NSX supercar at Honda’s new Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio, which probably means it will employ the same feather-light carbon fiber/aluminum construction as the range-topping Acura.

As far as looks, it’s still a long ways away, but there are rumors the S2000 will borrow heavily styling cues from both the NSX and the S660. That means a wide front grill, headlights that wrap around like Geordi’s visor from Star Trek, and sleek aerodynamic accents.

Average Hondas these ain’t.

Honda Sales In China Fall: Street Doubtful Over Full-Year Targets

Honda sales fell by approximately 23% YoY, in China for the month of July, causing doubts over the company’s ability to achieve its full-year sales growth target 18.9% for the country.

Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (HMC) has reported sales of 39,453 vehicles in China for the month of July, indicating a drop of 23% year-over-year in the world’s biggest automotive market. The company had previously stated that it was targeting an 18.9% increase by selling 900,000 vehicles in China this year.

In the first seven months of the year, the company has sold 392,959 vehicles which comes out to just 6.9% growth over the same period last year.

The company’s representative said that the fall in the month of July can be attributed to strong competition and seasonal fall in demand in the market. Honda expects sales to rebound as it plans to launch new vehicle models in the second half of the year which will boost sales. It plans to double the number of vehicle models it offers in the Chinese market over the next two years.

Honda caters to the Chinese auto vehicle market through joint-ventures with Dongfeng Motor Group Co. Ltd. and Guanghou Automobile Group Co. Ltd. The slump in monthly sales however, is the biggest in the last 17 months, when sales of Japanese carmakers dropped in China in February 2013, due to anti-Japanese movements caused by territorial disputes.

Year to date Honda stock has shed 16.32% due to weakness in the topline resulting from increasing competition. Toyota Motor Corp (TM) also saw sales dip in July, falling 7.6% YoY, as it is still increasing the production of the newly launched Corolla. China the biggest automobile market has been a tough market for Japanese car makers like Honda due to political conflicts between Tokyo and Beijing which affects sales. In 2013, 18.8% of Honda’s sales came from China.

Honda Power Equipment investing $8.5M in Swepsonville facility

Honda Power Equipment Manufacturing Inc., a division of American Honda Motor Co. Inc., is investing $8.5 million into its Swepsonville facility and planning the production of a new generator as it celebrates the plant's 30th anniversary on Wednesday.

The company didn't disclose details about the expansion, but will be holding a media event and tour on Wednesday at the facility. The plant was opened in 1984 and produces a wide variety of outdoor power equipment including lawn mowers, string trimmers, snow blowers, water pumps and general purpose engines.

Honda Power Equipment Manufacturing employs more than 620 full-time associates and 340 contract associates at the plant, which produces more than 2 million products annually.

Honda officials said they have invested more than $250 million — including a $30 million expansion a decade ago — at the location over the past 30 years, enabling it to produce more than 27 million power products.

American Honda volume slides 4%

American Honda Motor Co. had a rocky July, with sales falling 4 percent from a year earlier to 135,908 vehicles, in a market that rose 9 percent overall.

Sales dropped 2 percent at Honda Division, to 123,428 vehicles, and 18 percent at Acura, to 12,480, the company said today.

Honda’s light-truck deliveries, a bright point elsewhere in the industry in July, slid 5 percent while car volume dropped 3 percent.

American Honda’s sales have fallen in five of the first seven months of this year, bringing the year-to-date total to 875,344, off 1 percent.

“Our July sales were definitely impacted by a lack of sedan availability as we sold out of TSX and TL,” Mike Accavitti, Acura’s general manager, said in a statement. “We’re confident that the all-new TLX luxury performance sedan, arriving at dealers now, will quickly remedy the situation and drive Acura sales growth through the second half of the year.”

Two of the company’s core models -- the Honda Accord and CR-V -- posted sales gains in July. Honda sold 35,073 Accords in July, up 11 percent, and 28,522 CR-Vs, up 5 percent.

But sales of the Civic, the brand’s second-highest volume nameplate, slid 7 percent to 30,038. And the Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline also posted sales declines of more than 15 percent. The 2015 Odyssey goes on sale Saturday Aug 2.

Sales of Honda’s redesigned Fit edged up 1 percent to 5,115.

Acura had a particularly bad month, with lower sales for every sedan. The TL tumbled 60 percent and sales of the TSX collapsed 72 percent. Both vehicles are being phased out in favor of the TLX, which has not yet gone on sale.

The MDX was the only Acura to post a gain in July, rising 13 percent to 6,283 vehicles. The RDX crossover, the brand’s second highest-volume nameplate, posted a 10 percent sales drop, to 3,532.

Honda has a very strong brand in India, says Yoshiyuki Matsumoto

Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, president and CEO of Honda Motor India, is cheerful and he has good reasons to be ebullient as Honda's two wholly-owned ventures in India — the car and two-wheeler businesses are on an overdrive. Speaking to ET's Ketan Thakkar and Satish John, Matsumoto takes the help of a translator. But often he lapses into English before realising that there is a man to do the job for him. Edited excerpts:

Are you surprised by the response you got for Amaze, City and now Mobilio (which has garnered over 6,000 bookings)?

We have a very strong brand in India. The success has been due to the strong legacy of the Honda brand. We are happy and the sales have been more than our expectations

Is your headquarters now nudging you to put a third plant in India?

No comments. (Laughs). We have two plants in India, which have a production capacity of 2.4 lakh units per annum. We have not completely utilised that, but in the near future we intend to use it for the domestic market.

Do you see India as a sourcing base for neighbouring countries and Africa?

We've already recognised Africa to have a huge potential. It is a last frontier for us. In the future, we see India playing a key role in export of cars to Africa. We have a plan to export to Africa and that plan will evolve over a period of time. However, we already export engines and key components from India currently

How different was Honda operating before you took over and what has changed?

Before the global financial crisis of 2008, Honda had a portfolio of only petrol cars. But with the changing scenario of currency fluctuation and our localisation levels being low and the price gap between petrol and diesel fuel widening, we had to change our game plan. Two key things that we tried to do after I took over was pushing for localisation heavily and advancing the development of our diesel engine.

How tough was it to improve localisation on low volumes?

We were at a level of 70% gross localisation and the pure localisation was even lower. To reduce costs, we needed volumes. Our volumes were not enough and to improve localisation we needed a certain scale, which was not there; so we were caught in a vicious cycle. So, immediately after taking over, I pushed everyone right from sales, engineering, purchase, administration and R&D to focus on cost. We organised the first supplier conference, just before I came in here. We had to reveal our future plans in terms of volume expectations and future models so that our vendors commit and invest in localisation to reduce cost. The first day after the supplier conference, suppliers were a little skeptical about our future projections, but post the successful launch of Amaze, they have indeed gained confidence in Honda Cars India's future plans.

You head the two-wheeler business as well. Are there plans of merging both the businesses?

We don't have any plans of merging the twowheeler and four-wheeler businesses as both the businesses are at different stages of evolution in the country. The speed of growth and volume in two-wheeler business is totally different, whereas four-wheeler business is very strategic and is gradually taking off. That's why it is better to let both the businesses run on their own.

What about synergies between both the divisions?

The collaboration with the two-wheeler business was not that big as our volumes in the fourwheeler business were merely 50,000 to 60,000 units per annum. But with growing volumes moving to 2.5 to 3 lakh units going ahead, we would look at synergies in purchasing with our two-wheeler business. Officially, we don't have a common purchasing division, but as a project we are considering, wherein we see common sourcing from suppliers to benefit both.

What is your view on the Indian suppliers as you go deeper into localisation? Are they capable of delivering, or you think there is a need to bring in Japanese suppliers to meet your cost quality equation?

We have faith in our Indian suppliers. They have enough capability to deliver the quality we desire from them. We would want Indian suppliers to take charge of our localisation plan. Plus, it makes sense to source locally to de-risk from the currency fluctuation. Plus, we also save on logistics cost.

Honda has been building R&D capacity in India? Will a car come out of that R&D centre in India?

The capacity of R&D is a key for the future success. After a few years, India will be No.1 country in the Asia-Oceania region. That's why we already have a R&D setup in India. Of course, a car will come out of the R&D centre in India; that's why we are investing in R&D here. Also important is the speed of development and we are relying more on local resources

A lot of global MNCs are using India as a base for development of entry-level car. Could that be the 'World A Entry Car' project that India takes responsibility for?

Exactly, that is what we are considering. But the definition of an entry car can vary; our concern is quality and originality; price is very important in this market and that's why we are considering a development in India.

What is your view on diesel engine. What role would it play going ahead in your portfolio and do you think there is a place for a small diesel engine in Honda family?

As far as our current portfolio is concerned 70% of cars sold are diesel, but the price gap is narrowing. Going ahead, I expect the share to be 50:50 between petrol and diesel. We have no plans for the diesel engine below 1.5 litres because the trend is moving towards SUV/MUV. They don't require a smaller engine.

Honda asking used-car buyers to sign liability document [w/poll]

When it comes to informing the car-buying public about potential safety hazards on used vehicles, there are two emerging schools of thought among used-car dealers.

In one camp: those who disclose as little as possible. Used-car giant CarMax leaves it to customers to check to see whether a car is under recall. Consumer groups filed a petition with the Federal Trade Commission last month, because they believe the lack of information amounts to deceptive advertising.

In the other: Honda, which has gone in the opposite direction. The company recently started disclosing possible recalls related to airbag malfunctions in certain vehicles. Honda is asking customers buying those used cars to sign a document that acknowledges they've been made aware of the issue. Buyers may be better informed, but such a signature could also shift liability away from the automaker.

It's a vexing issue on several fronts.

New cars under recall must be repaired before a dealer can sell them, under rules imposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. But used-car sellers are under no such mandate. Honda's disclosure helps consumers understand their new purchase may contain a potentially lethal defect, but some are worried that it could frighten customers away or expose dealerships to greater liability.

Eric Chase, a lawyer who often represents car dealers, tells Automotive News that the document, called the "Airbag Inflator Recall Disclosure and Acknowledgement," is a big problem.

"If a dealer called me and said, 'We're talking about something that is under recall but we can't repair it and it's dangerous to the point we'd have to warn them about death,' I'd say, 'you've got to do everything you legally can to make sure a consumer does not get behind that wheel.'"

Consumer advocates don't like the disclosure either. They say it's designed to limit the company's liability from lawsuits related to the defect, which can cause the airbags to explode instead of normally deploying in an accident, showering occupants with a potentially deadly amount of metal shrapnel and debris. They want Honda – and other automakers affected by the same problem – to stop selling them until repairs are completed.

"I think this form of disclosure is probably worse than nothing," said Rosemary Shahan, president of Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety. "They're taking advantage of the fact the consumer doesn't expect a Honda dealer to hook them into such a risky car. ... The reality is that it will be in a stack of papers that a customer is signing hours into the buying process."

Part of the complication is the affected used Honda cars aren't under recall – yet. Honda expects some of them will be soon. The company is currently compiling a list of Vehicle Identification Numbers for affected cars, and a recall will occur "within the next couple of weeks," Honda spokesperson Chris Martin tells Autoblog.

Even once the recall comes, it may not encompass all the affected cars. The defect behind the exploding airbags is one that automakers have struggled with fully identifying for more than a decade. Starting in 2001, several automakers have issued more than 20 separate recalls for millions of these airbags, which are manufactured by global supplier Takata. Exploding airbags are responsible for at least two deaths in the US, and scores of injuries.

Last month, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota issued eight recalls for 2.1 million vehicles that had Takata airbags installed. The automakers didn't recall vehicles from across the country; they were regional in nature.

High humidity is thought to contribute to the problem, so automakers only recalled vehicles either originally sold or currently registered in Florida, the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Honda went beyond that scope and added Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas.

The cars are some of Honda's best sellers, and if used-car buyers balk, the document could hurt sales.

In its ongoing review of Vehicle Identification Numbers, Honda is matching the ID tags to cars that may have eventually been sold outside those states. In the meantime, it is asking dealers to have customers sign the disclosure.

Cars affected span a decade. In certain model years, they include the Honda Accord, Civic, Element, Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline pickup. Acura models affected include the MDX, TL, CL and RL. The cars represent some of Honda's best-selling cars, and if used-car buyers balk, the document could hurt sales.

"It certainly might, but we're not interested in trying to cover any of this up for a customer," Martin said. "It's not in our best interest to have a customer buy this car and then take it later as a surprise. ... We're making sure customers are fully aware of the situation, and bring it in for repairs when parts are available."

Shedding niche image, Honda starts work on small car and compact SUV

MUMBAI: Honda Motor has started work on developing a small car and a compact sports utility vehicle (sub-4 metre) targeting India, as it aims to break into the country's mass market segment, people familiar with the company's plans said.

Part of the development will be carried out in India with a focus on maximising the use of local products to keep costs low. The process has moved from consideration stage to real development work in the past couple of months, they said. Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, president and CEO of Honda Motor India, said the process to develop the small car has just begun. "It (introduction of the car) is not very far, but we can't give you an exact time," he said. He didn't comment on the SUV.

The Japanese firm also sees a market for the small car in other South Asian nations as well as Africa and Indonesia, and has code named it the 'World A Entry Car' to signify this potential.

In India, small cars including hatchbacks and sub-4 metre sedans rule the market, accounting for more than two-thirds of total passenger vehicle sales and driving the performance of companies such as Maruti Suzuki and the local unit of Hyundai Motor. Compact SUVs have done well too.
The EcoSport compact SUV, for instance, has helped Ford shrug off years of underperformance in India.

Honda's Amaze, a small sedan, along with the mid-sized City, has driven its India sales in the past year. Honda launched the Brio hatchback in India a few years ago to drive sales, but that hasn't delivered the kind of success the company would have expected

The new car and the compact SUV will be built on a re-engineered GSP platform, which the Brio too is based on, the people said.

The Amaze and the new Mobilio utility vehicle are also based on the GSP platform. The small car is likely to be positioned below the Brio and is expected to be Honda's first car costing less than Rs 4 lakh — the Brio starting at Rs 4.24 lakh in Mumbai showrooms is the cheapest in its car portfolio now. It will be pitted against Maruti Suzuki's Wagon R, the Chevrolet Beat and Hyundai i10.

The sub-Rs 4 lakh car market accounts for almost 35-40% of the overall passenger car market.

The new SUV (sub-4 meter) is expected to compete with the EcoSport and M&M's yet-to-be-launched micro SUV, as well as compact utility vehicles that Maruti and Hyundai plan to launch in the next two years.

Honda's new vehicles are expected to hit the market in 2017 and give a major boost in volumes to the Japanese company, which is already knocking at the No. 3 position of Mahindra.

Matsumoto said it needs to put in infrastructure in terms of sourcing, manufacturing and distribution network for the new car.

The R&D capability is getting built and the dealer network expansion is already underway. Honda plans to expand its network to 150 cities by next March, from 107 now.

It has a capacity to build 1.8 lakh units a year and it can be expanded to 2.4 lakh units with minor investment. Honda is also considering a third plant in Gujarat — the first two are in Greater Noida and Rajasthan — but Matsumoto declined to confirm any such plans.

With five cars on the GSP base, Honda is squeezing the platform to gain from economies of scale, people close to the company said.

While Japan will be the lead country to develop the vehicles, Matsumoto has stressed on India's role in developing the small car, saying it "will come out of the R&D centre in India". "After a few years, India will be the No. 1 country in the Asia Oceania region, that's why we already have a setup of R&D in India," he said.

Apart from his India roles, Matsumoto is managing officer and representative of development, purchasing and production for Asia & Oceania at Honda Motor and vice president of Asian Honda, covering six business regions, 25 companies and 11 R&D functions.

He has been posted in India to come up with best vehicle specifications at a competitive cost.

Already, Honda's R&D base in Greater Noida has played a key role in localising existing and new cars. The new City has a localisation level of close of 90% and the new Mobilio has more than 90% of its parts sourced in India.

On the positioning of the small car in the Indian market, Matsumoto said: "The definition of entry car can vary. Our concern is quality and originality. Price is very important in this market, that's why we are considering developing in India."

Apart from India, Honda also sees the small car fitting into Indonesia's LCGC Program (low cost green car). The company is expected to use India also as a base for exports to Africa, which Matsumoto calls as a next big frontier for Honda.

While India's overall passenger vehicles market has gone into a tailspin, Honda Cars India has bucked the trend. Led by the Amaze and City sedans, the company has already broken into the top 5 in fiscal 2014 with a market share of 5.37%, selling 80% more vehicles at 1.34 lakh units.

With the launch of Mobilio, volumes are likely to cross 2 lakh units in fiscal year 2015. It has a target to sell 3 lakh units a year by fiscal 2017.

Matsumoto says India will be the largest market for Honda in the entire Asia Oceania region by then.

With products in the two growing segment - small cars and compact SUV - Honda can attempt to increase its market share to the double digits in India, said Puneet Gupta, associate director at consultancy firm IHS Automotive.

"With the volumes of Mobilio, and the sustained demand for City and Amaze, we expect Honda to overtake Mahindra & Mahindra as the third largest player in the Indian market, with a compact SUV and with a new small car; we may see Honda challenging Hyundai for the number two position in the future," said Gupta.

5 Brilliant Strategies That Make Honda One Of The World's Most Innovative Companies

The path to writing "Driving Honda: Inside The World's Most Innovative Car Company" began with a question that perplexed me: If globalization was supposed to be such a boon to multinationals, why are so many large manufacturers struggling to make money outside of their home markets?

Few global manufacturers would admit it publicly, but in many private conversations with executives I heard some version of this statement: "We're selling more products than ever in China and South America and other emerging markets, but our profit margins there are minuscule to flat, when they even exist."

To address this puzzle, I sought to find companies that could serve as successful models for multinationals operating in a globalized commercial environment; I hoped to identify the characteristics that make an individual business more likely to generate high profit margins, innovate, behave in socially responsible ways, and be strategically creative wherever it establishes a foothold. Almost immediately, Honda Motor Co. fit the bill.

To begin with, Honda has looked outward from its home shores well before other manufacturers considered making or even selling products overseas. As long ago as the 1950s, when Honda was only a few years old, the company's founder, Soichiro Honda, bemoaned the limited growth opportunities in "little Japan," declaring that Honda Motor must "maintain an international viewpoint" and perceive the rest of the world as its potential customer base and factory footprint.

It's no surprise, then, that Honda began selling motorcycles in the U.S. as early as 1959 and autos a few years later. Nor that Honda stunned the auto industry with its 1974 Civic, the first car to meet stringent U.S. Clean Air Act emissions standards even as the large American automakers and Toyota were claiming it was impossible to economically produce an engine that lived up to the act's goals. Or that Honda became the first non-domestic automaker to successfully manufacture cars in the U.S. when it opened its Anna plant in 1982.

Honda's aggressive early globalization strategy in the U.S. was followed by similar successful forays in other parts of the world: It was the first Japanese company to produce cars in China and its earnings record in India and Southeast Asia and other far-flung regions is the envy of the auto industry.

In large part because of its approach to global operations, Honda, a relative industrial newbie, has a lot to boast about: By a large margin, Honda is the preeminent engine maker in the world with an output of more than 20 million internal combustion motors annually; Honda has never posted a loss in its history, and its automobile operating profit ratios of about 5% consistently top the industry; Honda's stock price has nearly doubled since September 2008, when the global economy collapsed; and Honda vehicles are the most durable and long-lasting of any automaker, with 75% of its cars and trucks sold in the last 25 years still on the road.

What then has made Honda excel so adeptly as a global multinational? The secret strategic sauce that distinguishes Honda from other manufacturers can be broken down into five ingredients:
1. Don't globalize, localize.

Unlike Toyota and most other multinationals in any industry, Honda is not a top-down company, controlled by headquarters. Instead, Honda manufacturing subsidiaries virtually everywhere around the world operate as autonomous companies, designing and producing vehicles based on local conditions and consumer behavior.

In "The Machine That Changed the World," the landmark book about automobile lean manufacturing, the authors praised Honda's localization strategy for "its conviction about doing it all in one place" — in other words, combining engineering, design, and manufacturing functions in each of its large local facilities. By contrast, virtually all industrial companies keep R&D and other technical and design functions close to home, where they can be managed by executives who are miles removed from local preferences and circumstances.
2. Embrace paradox.

Honda is a questioning, knowledge-rich organization, which demands that its workers at all levels continually poke holes in the status quo. They do that through daily, often spontaneous meetings known as "waigaya" during which decisions, large and small, are reevaluated and turned on their head in hopes of finding a better strategic or tactical choice.

Throughout its relatively short history, Honda has welcomed paradox as a way to promote critical thinking and reassess the so-called common wisdom, shaping new responses to ingrained expectations. As one Honda executive put it: "Waigaya to me means perpetual dissatisfaction. At our company, self-satisfaction is the enemy." The value of this system to a multinational organization is immeasurable.

Nothing is more important for global companies today than having the dexterity to be simultaneously local and international, to swiftly respond to regional preferences while scaling operating tactics and manufacturing improvements around the world. And as Honda's success in the international arena demonstrates, this capability is directly linked to unremittingly reexamining with every new automobile model — more broadly, with every new undertaking what is already believed to be true.
3. Robots? Not so fast.

Even as most major industrial corporations view robots and other forms of automation as the best way to reduce costs and maintain productivity, Honda prefers a different path. Honda's factories are purposefully the most labor intensive in the auto industry, employing robots only in areas that are dangerous or otherwise obviously less fit for humans than machines.

Honda believes that assemblers become disengaged and their enthusiasm for their jobs and, by extension, local innovation is muted by the presence of machines whose sole purpose is to build cars cheaper and faster than humans.

As Honda sees it, that output and quality standards are too often set to the levels that the technology can achieve and rather than the boundless creativity of human imagination. Consequently, to enhance performance in a local facility, a new piece of equipment would have to be purchased, instead of a new potentially revolutionary process invented. "Once you automate, you're incapable of further improvement," said Sean McAlinden, chief economist at the Center for Automotive Research, paraphrasing Honda's perspective.
4. Put an engineer in the hot seat.

Since Honda's founding in 1949 all of the company's CEOs (including the father of the company, Soichiro Honda) have been engineers, veterans of Honda's prized autonomous research and development unit. That's an extraordinary record: Conventional wisdom among multinationals holds that the most effective chief executives are specialists in marketing, sales, or perhaps accounting — anything but engineering.

As a result, even CEOs in technologically based industries, like pharmaceuticals or computer hardware and software, tend to know little about designing or manufacturing the products that they sell or managing the global supply chain or factory footprint. That's often why CEOs favor centralization in which their most loyal lieutenants near headquarters oversee distributed operations, acting as both a trusted proxy and informant for the chief executive.

Reared in R&D, Honda CEOs' strengths lie in product and process innovation, primarily in designing new vehicle models and features and in conceiving fresh techniques for building them faster and better. Consequently, their success as managers is measured not by quarter-to-quarter results but instead by how well they cultivate individual creativity throughout the organization and how well they disburse Honda's unique corporate culture to its decentralized localization strategy to produce continuous innovation.
5. Focus on factory flexibility.

Unlike other manufacturers, Honda can seamlessly produce multiple autos on a single assembly line, one after another, and switch a line over to a newly designed vehicle within hours. By contrast, it can take months for Honda's rivals to retool a factory for a new vehicle.

One way Honda achieves this is through in-house engineering co-located at each major production facility, serving as an independent operation that is focused solely on local needs. Any problems that arise in the flexible factory can be addressed immediately by this team — which at most companies resides near headquarters and reports to corporate top executives — ensuring that the steady stream of automobiles going through the line is not impeded.

Such an efficient and nimble factory is the Holy Grail for all manufacturers and Honda has earned high marks from auto analysts for its ability to deftly navigate this challenge. In globalization terms, the advantage Honda gains is in being able to alter production and capacity of individual models at a moment's notice, depending on local sales trends and the success of competitive brands.

Honda invented the flexible factory through an innovation known as synchronized engineering: all of the vehicles coming into a factory's assembly zones share common designs, such as similar locations and installation techniques for functions like brakes or transmission. As a result, assemblers are agnostic about which car they are building because in the factory only small variations differentiate, say, an Odyssey from an Accord V6.

Honda Mobilio bookings stall City production for August

Noting over enthusiastic booking for the recently launched Honda Mobilio, sources confirm that the production of Honda City has taken a back seat. In about 20 days, Honda Mobilio has amassed over 10,000 bookings, which has resulted in Honda Car India suspending production of their City sedan this month.

HCIL has two manufacturing plants, one each in Greater Noida and Tapukara, Rajasthan. While their primary plant in Noida is exclusively for production of City, Brio and the new Mobilio, Honda’s Tapukara plant is from where powertrains and Honda Amaze are produced. Together, these plants have a capacity to produce 200,000 units annually.

Launch of Mobilio and its immediate success has thrown production schedules into a tizzy as all three best sellers – Amaze, City and Mobilio have to be produced at the same plant which has capacity of 1,20,000 units per annum. The Noida plant is running at full capacity judging from June 2014 sales when the company sold 7,715 units of City, 7,073 units of Amaze and 1,438 units of Brio.

For July, Honda sold a total of 15,709 cars. Of which 7,705 units were of City, 4,507 units of Amaze, 3,365 units of Mobilio, 74 units of Brio and 58 units of CR-V.

Honda Mobilio has seen over 10,000 bookings in just a week of launch and with expectations of heavy bookings the company has shifted production of the City out of the Noida facility to the Tapukara plant in Rajasthan with production expected to commence only in September.

Considering Honda City already has a huge waiting period, this development will further add to the delay of City deliveries across India.

Nissan May Overtake Honda in US Sales by 2016

The hierarchy of Japanese automakers in the United States has been unchanged for more than 25 years, with Toyota in the lead, followed at some distance by Honda and Nissan.

However, things are about to change in the next couple of years. No, Toyota won’t lose its No. 1 spot, but Nissan is likely to overtake Honda.

With its wider range of vehicles, more popular styling and aggressive discounting, Nissan is catching up with Honda and in the next couple of years may pass its competitor in US car sales for the first time since 1987.

“I’m sure that we will overtake Honda. How long is it going to take us? Time will tell, but it’s going to happen,” Jose Munoz, the chairman of Nissan North America, told Reuters. The executive added that Nissan is targeting a 10 percent market share in the US by 2016.

The automaker’s share in the first seven months of this year was 8.6 percent, up from 7.4 percent in 2009. Honda, however, has seen its share slip to 9.1 percent from a peak of 11 percent in 2009. Its current market share is the lowest since 2006. Leader Toyota currently has approximately 15 percent of the market.

Honda relies heavily on the Accord, the Civic and the CR-V crossover in the US, with the three models accounting for 69 percent of the company’s sales in the country this year.

As for Nissan, its top three sellers, the Altima (pictured), Sentra and Rogue make up 52 percent of the automaker’s US sales. This is consistent with Nissan’s broader strategy of diversification, as the company sells 27 models in the US, compared to Honda's 16 models.
