RACING CAR FOR THE ROAD – CIVIC TYPE R CONCEPT

Bold and Aggressive, Styled to Reflect Performance

Honda’s appearance at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show will lead with the worldwide reveal of the Civic Type R Concept model, providing the styling direction for the exterior design of the hotly-anticipated production version that debuts in 2015. Its bold and aggressive styling reflects the strong performance credentials for which Type R is renowned.

Described by the design team as a ‘racing car for the road’ rather than a high performance version of a road car, the new Type R looks set to signal a new era for the marque- this model is set to be the most extreme Civic Type R yet. Its sleek and aerodynamic profile reflects a car designed for function and performance whilst maintaining the look of a road car and the distinctive character of Type R.

“Type R represents Honda’s racing spirit. It is built with a passion for motorsport.”

Masaru Hasegawa – Chief Stylist, Civic Type R

Styling is heavily linked to performance, with the Type R Concept showing its credentials in the exterior design. Many of the styling features offer real function, rather than just aesthetics, as confirmed by feedback from prototype testing at the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany. The need to reduce drag, add down-force, provide cooling and achieve optimum airflow, were key considerations for the design team.

The front spoiler is designed to add down-force, the vertical side wings and the cut out shape of the front bumper help to reduce drag and control airflow around the front tyres. A red stripe running along the front spoiler further accentuates the Type R’s low and wide stance.

Furthermore, the new headlight design with integrated LED daytime running lights and the sharp horizontal fog lights, add a strong character to the face of the Type R Concept. The upper and lower front grilles have been enlarged and air outlets on the bonnet provide cooling for the high output engine. The front and rear fenders have been widened to accommodate wide tyres and air outlets are integrated to optimise airflow.

One of the most stand-out advances on the Concept model is the new rear spoiler featuring LED tail lights integrated into the rear wing which accentuates the Type R’s futuristic look.

The shape and angle of the double rear wing has been designed to provide additional down-force, as a direct result of feedback gained through testing on the track.

Supporting the design direction are 20-inch wheels, edged by a red ring, with visible red brake callipers and a bright red stripe running along the bottom of the front spoiler. Such features add to the aggressive appearance which reflects the inspiring driving experience that the Type R promises to deliver.

Styling and modelling of the new Concept has been carried out in Europe, with the team based at Honda’s R&D centre in Swindon, UK. The design team maintained close contact with production colleagues, as they worked towards achieving the styling direction of the Concept model.

Building on Honda’s Pedigree for Turbo-Charged Engines

While further detail on performance is yet to be announced, Honda has confirmed that the forthcoming Type R will be the first model in Europe to feature one of its brand new VTEC TURBO engines from the Earth Dreams Technology range. The two-litre, direct injection, four-cylinder turbo is expected to deliver class-leading output of at least 280PS and will be EURO 6 compliant.

Turbo engines have not been seen in Honda’s production cars in Europe for some time, however, the company has continued to actively develop turbo technology, deploying it on the race track and in road cars in other regions. The 2013 WTCC season saw Honda successfully return to the track with the turbo-charged HR412E in the Civic; powering the Castrol Honda World Touring Car team and Zengo Motorsport team to become the Manufacturers’ Champion in Honda´s first full season.

Honda’s successful return to WTCC in 2013, has been instrumental in gathering knowledge that has helped shape the new Type R, providing the development team with analysis and feedback on performance and styling collected from the track to assist in the creation of a ‘racing car for the road’ from the Civic five-door.

The manufacturer’s long history in developing turbo engines for success on the track dates back decades, with one stand-out example being Honda’s turbo-charged RA168E used in Formula One. In the 1988 F1 season the RA168E powered Honda to set eight new records, including the most race victories (15 out of 16), the most Constructors points (199) and the most one-two finishes (10). The season also saw Honda take both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships for the second consecutive year.

Additionally, the 2013 American Le Mans Series saw Honda Performance Development and its teams dominate, with Scott Tucker taking his third consecutive drivers title in the ARX-03b. Powered by the Honda HR28TT twin-turbo V6 engine, the ARX-03b produces 450hp from 2800cc displacement. In the Japanese Super GT series, GT300 class, the CR-Z GT has used a turbo engine since 2013; while the 2014 NSX Concept –GT, in the GT500 class will feature a two-litre turbo engine coupled with hybrid technology.

Honda also continues to deploy turbo-charged engines in production cars in markets outside of Europe. The 1988 Legend introduced a 2.0-litre 24-valve V6 engine with a variable “Wing Turbo” that could regulate exhaust stream and efficiently utilise charging pressure. More recently, the Acura RDX launched in 2008 with a 2.3-litre 16-valve inline four-cylinder engine utilising i-VTEC intake valve control; combining Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) with Variable Timing Control™ (VTC™). With the variable flow turbocharger working in unison with i-VTEC, the RDX delivers strong power and torque, excellent fuel economy and low emissions. Rated output for the engine is 240 hp at 6000 rpm, with 260 lb-ft/352 Nm of torque at 4500 rpm.

Many smaller Honda models also utilise turbo engines in order to deliver a dynamic ride; for example, the 1982 City Turbo through to the successful N-ONE turbo model released in Japan, in 2012.

The unveiling of the new Type R Concept model follows Honda’s announcement at the Paris Motor Show in 2012, where it confirmed the return of the Civic Type R, with a commitment to setting new standards in performance and handling, with the application of technologies developed through its participation in the World Touring Car Championships. The company also announced its aim for the new Civic Type R to become the fastest front-wheel-drive vehicle to lap the Nurburgring.

The Civic Type R Concept model will appear on the Honda stand at Geneva Motor Show, in a vivid red with a gold highlight, a colour developed especially for this car, aiming to express its performance credentials and unique character.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP - FCEV CONCEPT

Further underlining Honda’s commitment to leadership in the development of advanced technology, the latest FCEV concept model makes its debut European appearance. Sleek and aerodynamic, the concept points to the potential styling direction of Honda’s next-generation fuel-cell electric vehicle which launches in the U.S. and Japan in 2015, followed by Europe.

Showcasing exciting and modern styling, the Honda FCEV Concept features sweeping character lines underscored by an ultra-aerodynamic body. It also delivers ample interior space and seating for five passengers, thanks to new powertrain packaging efficiencies.

Honda’s next generation FCEV will feature the world’s first application of a fuel-cell powertrain packaged completely in the engine room of the vehicle, allowing for efficiencies in cabin space as well as flexibility in the potential application of fuel-cell technology to multiple vehicle types in the future.

Significant technological advancements to the fuel-cell stack have yielded more than 100kW of power output, with power density now 3kW/L, an increase of 60 percent, and the stack size reduced by 33 percent, compared to the current FCX Clarity. The next-generation Honda FCEV is anticipated to deliver a driving range of approximately 700km, according to Japan cycle (JC-08 mode) with a quick refuelling time of around three minutes at 70 MPa.

“Building on twenty years of fuel-cell leadership with the FCX and FCX Clarity, the FCEV Concept sets the direction for our next-generation fuel-cell vehicle and for future improvements in electric-drive technology. While this car is a concept, it points towards a very real future.“

Thomas Brachmann – Fuel Cell Technology, Honda R&D Europe

For almost two decades Honda has led the development and deployment of fuel-cell technology through extensive real world testing, significant advancements in fuel-cell operation, and meeting stringent emissions and safety regulations.

In 2011, Honda joined the Clean Energy Partnership, the CEP is Europe's leading fuel cell vehicle and hydrogen infrastructure demonstration project. More recently, Honda’s participation in the H2 Mobility Programmes in Germany and the UK demonstrate its commitment to synchronise the rollout of vehicles and hydrogen infrastructure.

Launched in Europe in 2008, Honda’s current fuel cell-electric vehicle, the FCX Clarity, was quickly heralded as a technological breakthrough in design, packaging and efficiency. As the world’s first dedicated fuel-cell vehicle, the FCX Clarity features a striking silhouette and a low-slung cabin. With the V-flow fuel-cell stack positioned down the centre of the vehicle and the electric motor located in the front, Honda was able to maintain the car’s futuristic styling while delivering a driving range of 240 miles.

Honda FCX Clarity Contribution in Europe:

2009- FCX Clarity promotion program throughout Europe
June 2011- Honda joins CEP (Clean Energy Partnership) and H2 Demonstration Project in Germany. Support with 2 FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicles.
September 2011- Opening of the first 70MPa and 35MPa public hydrogen station in Swindon, UK
September- October 2012- “H2 Moves Scandinavia Road Tour” from Hamburg via Munich, Bolzano, Paris, Cardiff, Bristol, London, Copenhagen
October 2012- Entering into Nordic MoU to prepare for H2 station and FCEV launch in Scandinavian countries
October 2012- Joining the German H2 Mobility program to prepare for H2 station and FCEV deployment
January 2014- Joining the UK H2 Mobility

FURTHER EVOLUTION – NSX CONCEPT

Also making its European debut at Geneva is the latest evolution of the NSX Concept, revealing a chassis layout with a longitudinal, V6, direct injection engine with twin turbo.

The forthcoming new NSX will feature Sport Hybrid Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), delivering a whole new level of both fuel economy and superior driving performance by combining a new mid-mounted V6 direct-injection twin turbo engine and an all-new dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

Utilising a unique two-motor Electric Motor Drive Unit with a bilateral torque adjustable control system, the new hybrid all-wheel-drive system can instantly generate negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering, delivering far superior handling performance to previous AWD systems.

The SH-AWD system on the new NSX will have a mid-mounted powertrain, with the electric motors on the front wheels.

RACING SPIRIT

2014 Civic WTCC Livery

Following victory in the Manufacturers' Championship of the 2013 World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), its first season of full participation as a factory works team, Honda will reveal the 2014 livery of the Castrol Honda WTCC Civic at the Geneva Motor Show.

Honda has recently confirmed that in the 2014 season the Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team will continue to compete with its Championship winning driver line-up of Gabriele Tarquini and Tiago Monteiro; and that Honda will also provide the 2014 WTCC Civic to the private teams of Zengo Motorsport with Norbert Michelisz, and to Proteam Racing with Mehdi Bennani.

Honda’s First Formula One Car – the RA271

Honda is also using its appearance at the 2014 Geneva Show to showcase its long history in Formula One with the RA271, the first Honda to race in F1, which made its debut at the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring in 1964.

Symbolising Honda’s challenging spirit, the RA271 featured an all-new chassis, with a light alloy panel design, replacing the obsolete space frame concept employed on the RA270F test car. Development of this state-of-the-art aluminium monochrome chassis took the team into new territory, leading them to consult textbooks on aircraft technology to support their efforts. A key priority was to ensure optimum stability and weight distribution once the engine was mounted, and so, drawing upon its expertise in motorcycle production, Honda took the innovative choice of installing the V12 engine transversely in the chassis.

Honda had originally planned to paint its first made-for-racing F1 car in gold, to match the RA270F prototype. However gold had been assigned to South Africa by the FIA, so Honda elected to finish the car in ivory white accented with a red rising sun on the cowling.

Honda’s Record-Breaking Turbo-Charged Engine – the RA168E

Completing Honda’s racing line-up will be the turbo-charged RA168E, which dominated the 1988 Formula One championship in the year that engine supply shifted from Williams to McLaren.

In this the last season of competing with turbo-charged engines Honda faced a huge challenge with regulation changes, which saw fuel tank capacity reduced to 150 litres and maximum boost pressure reduced to 2.5 bar. Rather than switching to a naturally-aspirated version, Honda fought on with a turbo-charged engine; reducing fuel consumption, boosting power output and reducing engine weight to just 146kg.

The RA168E went on to help Honda set eight new records in the 1988 season, including the most race victories (15 out of 16), the most Constructors points (199) and the most one-two finishes (10). The season also saw Honda take both the Constructors‘ and Drivers‘ Championships for the second consecutive year.

........... partea a II-a :

NEXT-GENERATION POWERTRAINS – HONDA CIVIC TOURER 1.6 I-DTEC

The lightest in class 1.6 i-DTEC engine first introduced in the Civic five-door, has recently been added to the new European Civic Tourer and CR-V models. This engine, the first engine from Honda’s next-generation Earth Dreams Technology series, offers an exceptional balance of power, performance and efficiency. The new Civic Tourer, CR-V and 2014 Civic five-door will appear at Geneva alongside several other models from Honda‘s current line-up.

Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC

Designed and developed in Europe, the British-built Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC combines distinctive styling with a segment-leading mix of versatility, practicality and technology in a compact car with high fuel efficiency and surprisingly low running costs.

The frugal new 1.6 i-DTEC engine, along with innovations including the unique Eco Assist™ and Idle-Stop offers a competitive 120 PS of power and 300 Nm of torque, yet still delivers 3.8L/100km (74.33mpg) on the combined cycle, giving a range of 1,315 km (817 miles) on one tank of fuel and CO2 emissions starting from 99g/km.

The space inside the Tourer defies its dimensions. Despite being the lowest and most compact estate in the segment and just 235mm longer than the Civic five-door, the new Tourer offers a class-leading 624 litres of trunk space up to the tonneau cover; enough to accommodate four golf bags or three large suitcases and two flight cases. Additionally, utilising Honda’s unique Magic Seat system, the rear seats can be pulled down to create a completely flat load area with 1668 litres of capacity up to the roof lining; comfortably accommodating two full-sized mountain bikes with the front wheels removed.

The significant luggage space is cleverly supported by the Tourer’s newly developed rear Adaptive Damper System (ADS), a world first in a production car. The system automatically adjusts the rear suspension damping force to ensure optimum stability and comfort in varying load and driving conditions.
The new Civic Tourer is also available with a 1.8 i-VTEC petrol engine.

Comprehensive safety

Honda’s commitment to safety is embodied by the term ‘Safety for Everyone’; safety for drivers, passengers, pedestrians and occupants of other vehicles. Honda achieves this through a range of both passive and active safety features, which aim to prevent or mitigate accident and injuries. The new Civic Tourer and the 2014 Civic five-door feature Honda’s new suite of sensor-based Advanced Driving Assist Systems, which use a combination of cameras, short range lidar (Laser Radar) and radar technologies:

Advanced Driving Assist Systems

City-Brake Active System**

Specifically designed to help avoid or mitigate low speed accidents. City-Brake Active system is a laser radar system that scans the road ahead, automatically applying the brakes if an imminent risk of collision is detected. The system operates at low speeds (32km/h and below) and is designed to detect cars and trucks.

Blind Spot Information

Blind Spot Information uses radar technology to automatically detect vehicles in the driver’s blind spot and warn of potential dangers when the vehicle is travelling at speeds of more than 20km/h. The system is designed to detect cars and trucks and can help to support drivers in situations such as passing other vehicles and merging or changing lanes.

When a vehicle enters the driver’s blind spot a visual warning is displayed on the wing mirror. This remains until the vehicle leaves the blind spot. If the driver operates the indicator whilst the vehicle is in the blind spot, the visual warning will blink and an audible warning will sound to further alert the driver to the potential danger. The system can be turned off by the driver when the vehicle has stopped.

Cross Traffic Monitor

Honda’s Cross Traffic Monitor system uses rear side radar sensors to warn the driver of approaching vehicles when reversing. The direction of an approaching vehicle is shown either on the rear-view camera screen or displayed using arrows showing the direction of the travelling vehicle on the i-MID and an audible warning sound. The system is designed to detect cars and trucks travelling up to 25km/h, and can be turned off by the driver when the vehicle has stopped.

Adaptive Cruise Control**

Adaptive Cruise Control allows the driver to choose both their speed and distance from the vehicle ahead. If this falls below the set level, the system instantly decelerates the vehicle. Where quicker deceleration is required the system will alert the driver to apply the brakes using visual and audible warnings.

Collision Mitigation Braking System**

This system monitors the following distance and closing rate between the car and the vehicle (car or truck) directly in front of it, warning the driver when a collision is likely and helping reduce impact speed when a collision becomes unavoidable.

* Available on selected Grades
** City-Brake Active System and Collision Mitigation Braking System/ Adaptive Cruise Control are not available in conjunction with each other. NB

Ahead of the 2014 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris, Honda has released images and details of several enhancements across the 2015 Civic model range and the launch of the new Civic Sport derivative.

Both the Civic and Civic Tourer benefit from a new front exterior design, providing a new sporty outlook for the model featuring new headlamps with integrated daytime running lights and a new sleek front bumper. The Civic hatchback also features a new rear bumper, side skirts, a rear spoiler finished in black, and LED rear combination lamps.

In-keeping with these premium enhancements on the outside, the 2015 models also receive a specification upgrade inside; with new seat fabrics and stitching on the headrests, new door trims with chrome door handles and a control panel finished in a metallic black.

These aesthetic enhancements combine nicely with the class-leading interior space for which the range is renowned. The Civic’s 477-litre and Civic Tourer’s 624-litre trunk capacity remain the best in their respective segments.

The 2015 Civic range will also premiere the all-new Honda Connect in-car audio and information system. Honda Connect offers convenience and connectivity whilst on the road, with key features including; AM/FM, DAB and Internet Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, internet browsing, satellite navigation* and rear-view parking camera.

The system  runs Android 4.0.4  and features the familiar pinch, swipe and tap functionality of a smartphone on a seven inch display screen.

New Civic Sport derivative

The European Civic line-up has been expanded with the introduction of a new derivative, the new Civic Sport. Based on the Civic hatchback, and powered by the 1.6-litre i-DTEC, 120 PS diesel engine or the 1.8-litre I-VTEC, 142 PS petrol engine, it features a colour-coded rear spoiler and 17-inch alloy wheels unique to the Sport derivative. In addition, the Civic Sport echoes the striking design of the forthcoming Type R with a new front bumper featuring a lower grille mesh and a black roof lining for the cabin.

Each model in the 2015 Civic range will benefit from the addition of Honda’s City- Brake Active (CTBA) system as standard. Specifically designed to help avoid or mitigate low speed accidents, the system uses radar technology to scan the road ahead, automatically applying the brakes if an imminent risk of collision is detected. The system is engineered to operate at speeds below 30 km/h.

Honda’s press conference will take place at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in Hall 3, at 16:45 CET on Thursday 2 October.

All-new Honda Civic Type R: unrivalled against the brand's iconic performance flagship models

Unmatched performance compared to all previous Type R cars, including Civic, Integra, Accord and NSX
Thrilling turbocharged 2.0 litre i-VTEC engine producing more than 280 PS, sets new standards on power, torque and engine response
All-new ‘+R’ mode for enhanced on-track driving thrills
    High-revving performance red-lining at 7,000 rpm, mated to slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission
Innovative new four-point adaptive damper system delivers ultimate handling for enthusiastic driving

Additional ‘steer axis’ system minimises torque steer for exceptional traction
Striking luminous blue Type R Concept model shown on Honda stand

With the automotive world about to descend on the 2014 Mondial de l’Automobile, Honda has released exciting new details about its eagerly anticipated Civic Type R.

The all-new hot hatch – due in European showrooms next year – will be the most extreme Type R yet, signalling the start of a new performance era for the brand.

Power will come from a 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine from Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology series. Developing over 280 PS, it will deliver unmatched performance compared to any previous Type R car. That includes all generations of the Civic, plus the iconic performance-oriented versions of the Integra, Accord and even the NSX.

While complying with strict Euro 6 emissions regulations, this is a Honda Type R powerplant like no other. While its predecessors were naturally aspirated, the new unit benefits from a turbocharger, boosting low-end power delivery. Combined with the high-end performance that’s synonymous with Honda’s VTEC technology – and much-loved by enthusiastic Type R owners – they will deliver a sensational driving experience.

Suehiro Hasshi, Large Project Leader for the Civic Type R at Honda R&D, commented: “Honda has had four Type R model derivatives – the Civic, Integra, Accord and NSX. The engine in this new Honda Civic Type R is unrivalled against all of them in terms of raw power, torque and engine response.”

Hasshi-san emphasised the car’s appeal will be far greater than a new high-performance engine under the bonnet. A number of engineering innovations and enhancements will make the new Civic Type R a true driver’s car, worthy of wearing the famous red ‘H’ badge.

For example, the Civic Type R will mark the debut of Honda’s new ‘+R’ button. Located to the side of the steering wheel, once pressed it activates ‘+R‘ mode for the most exhilarating driving experience. The engine response is heightened, with torque-mapping changed to a more aggressive and performance-focused setting. Steering becomes more responsive and, together with the new four-point Adaptive Damper System, delivers the ultimate handling experience.

Hasshi explained: “In default standard mode, the Civic Type R is exceptionally agile, an everyday sports  car with an enjoyable and fluid acceleration. The  ‘+R’ button brings out a more dynamic and athletic car for the driver, to set pulses racing. The difference in character is immense. The ‘+R’ mode is extreme; the car is ideal for track use and will be appreciated by the genuine sports-driving enthusiast.”

Another example of Honda’s innovative approach is the car’s ‘steer axis’. In order to deliver the power of the turbocharged 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine, the new Civic Type R’s front suspension system includes this additional mechanical system involving two supporting ‘kingpins’. They minimise torque steer and allows the driver to fully exploit the car’s exceptional driveability.

Furthermore, a new four-point Adaptive Damper System has been developed specifically for the Civic Type R. It automatically adjusts the front and rear suspension damping force stiffness in a split second, based on driving conditions. This allows the new Civic Type R to provide a comfortable ride during cruising, yet become firm and agile when high-performance handling is required.

The new Civic Type R will follow in the footsteps of its predecessors with a six-speed manual transmission. The development team selected this option to maximise driving enjoyment.

Hasshi explained: “The manual transmission allows the drivers to select the gear they want, for example, down from fifth to third when approaching a corner. The concept of the new Civic Type R is to be the complete driver’s car so this was the best option.”

The all-new Civic Type R has been developed and engineered for European driving tastes. To be built at Honda’s state-of-the-art plant in Swindon, UK, it will arrive in dealerships during 2015.

To see the latest Honda Civic Type R Concept car, go to the Honda Stand in Hall 3, at the 2014 Mondial de l’Automobile. Honda’s press conference takes place on this stand at 16.45 CET on Thursday 2 October.

Boldly Restyled and Significantly Enhanced 2015 Honda CR-V Gets New Powertain and New Technology

New exterior and interior styling gives the 2015 CR-V a more superior road presence and greater sophistication
New more-powerful 1.6 litre i-DTEC diesel engine generates 160 PS and 350 Nm
New nine-speed automatic transmission delivers reduced emissions and improved fuel economy
New in-car entertainment and technology system introduced across the line-up

The Honda CR-V has been updated for 2015 with a refreshed design, revised engine line-up and new in-car technologies - further enhancing its appeal to European buyers.

Available from Spring 2015, the CR-V’s exterior styling updates provide a bolder and sportier appearance with a unique Honda style. The most notable changes are to the front, with redesigned headlamps that flow into the new grille. Additionally, a new bumper and skid plate give the CR-V a wider appearance and hint at its improved stability, while also lowering the car’s visual centre of gravity. Finally, at the rear, the LED combination lamps have been restyled to give the CR-V a more fluid, three-dimensional appearance.

Honda’s goal of creating a more stylish and functional interior has been achieved with a reshaped chrome-effect inlay running the width of the dashboard, and through the use of high-quality materials on key surfaces.  A sliding armrest (60 mm fore and aft) between the front seats further enhances versatility and comfort.

New, more efficient engines

The  four-wheel drive CR-V will be available with a more powerful diesel engine, and an all-new efficient nine-speed automatic transmission.

The new 1.6-litre i-DTEC four-cylinder diesel engine, from Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology series, provides considerably higher power ouput than its predecessor, boosting maximum power and torque to 160 PS and 350 Nm.

The engine can be twinned with two transmissions: either a six-speed manual, which emits a class-leading sub 130g/km of CO2 emissions, or – to fully exploit the latest engine’s efficiency – a new nine-speed automatic transmission. When fitted with the nine-speed unit the CR-V emits less than 135 g/km of CO2, a significant 20% reduction compared to the previous five-speed automatic transmission.

The two-wheel drive diesel CR-V, available with a manual transmission, carries over powertrains from the current model, equipped with the 120 PS 1.6 litre i-DTEC engine, with emissions as low as 115 g/km*. The 2.0-litre i-VTEC petrol  engine remains available, with power output of 155 PS, and now Euro6 compliant.

All-new infotainment technology

European buyers of the 2015 model year CR-V will benefit from one of the first applications of Honda Connect, the company‘s innovative new app-driven infotainment system.

Fitted as standard across the range, it offers greater convenience and connectivity while on the road, with a broad range of functions presented on a seven-inch touch screen display. Honda Connect gives front-seat occupants fast access to everything from vehicle information, rear-view parking camera and music, to Bluetooth connectivity for their phones as well as being enabled for  MirrorLink technology.

The new system’s functions include internet access, nine pre-installed apps - as well as access to the Honda App Center - optional Garmin satellite navigation, audio display, AM/FM/DAB and internet radio, phone interface and Bluetooth connectivity. In addition it offers a rear-view parking camera with dynamic guidelines, and a range of vehicle information, such as trip meter, fuel economy and journey time.

* Provisional data pending official WVTA approval.

Honda to Introduce World's First Predictive Safety Cruise Control System

Honda is to introduce the world’s first predictive cruise control system known as Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (i-ACC), capable of foreseeing and automatically reacting to other vehicles ‘cutting-in’ to the equipped vehicle’s lane.

Based on extensive real-world research of typical European driving styles, Honda’s Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (i-ACC) uses a camera and radar to sense the position of other vehicles on the road. It then applies an algorithm to predict the likelihood of vehicles in neighbouring lanes cutting-in by evaluating relations between multiple vehicles, enabling the equipped vehicle to react quickly, safely and comfortably.

i-ACC will make its debut this year on the new European CR-V*, building upon the traditional Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system. Traditional ACC systems keep a preselected longitudinal velocity, which is only reduced for maintaining a safe distance to a car in front. However, if a vehicle cuts-in from a neighboring lane, the traditional ACC system reacts later thus requiring stronger braking.

The new i-ACC system is able to compute the likelihood of a cut-in up to five seconds before it occurs, and is therefore designed to react very smoothly so as not to startle the driver, who might not yet be aware of the imminent cut-in. In this case the system applies just a mild brake initially, with an icon appearing on the driver display , informing the driver why a slow-down occurs.. It then proceeds to apply a stronger brake to adapt the velocity to keep a safe distance. Dr. Kleinehagenbrock, responsible for i-ACC at Honda R&D Europe (Deutschland) GmbH says, ‘i-ACC takes cruise control systems to a whole new level, offering what we call ‘predictive safety’.

i-ACC recognises the side of the road you are driving on whether in the UK or on the continent and automatically detects which neighbouring vehicle is the most critical to be aware of at any given moment.

i-ACC is the result of an in-house Research & Development project undertaken by an international Honda team in Europe and Japan, specifically designed for European roads. Research into driver behaviour to develop the algorithm was carried out across Europe.

Dr. Schmuedderich, responsible for i-ACC at Honda Research Institute Europe GmbH comments: “i-ACC is a significant breakthrough and a considerable further step towards a new generation of driver assistance systems that anticipate the behavior of other traffic participants.”

*i-ACC will be available on the 2015 European CR-V, Executive grade only.

The 2015 CR-V also features a one action fold down rear seat system, with the rear seats featuring a 60/40 split function allowing them to be easily folded completely flat with the simple pull of a handle. This transforms the CR-V into a versatile carrier which remains the top compact SUV for boot capacity, with 1648 litres of flat load space when a full size spare wheel is specified (1669 litres if space-saver spare wheel specified), or 589 litres with the seats in place.

The load length is up to 1,570 mm, allowing the CR-V’s trunk to easily accommodate two mountain bikes or four sets of golf clubs.

The 2015 CR-V is available in nine colours. New for 2015 is Golden Brown metallic, while four metallic, three pearl and one solid colour options carry over from the previous model (metallic: Twilight Blue, Urban Titanium, Alabaster Silver, Polished Metal; pearl: Passion Red, White Orchid, Crystal Black; and solid: Deep Ocean Blue).

To further lift the CR-V’s cabin design, a new interior trim has been applied. Available with either chrome plating or black carbon grain on key surfaces, the upholstery can be specified with black perforated leather, black Alcantara and leather, black emboss smooth fabric or ivory perforated leather.

ENGINES AND TRANSMISSION: REVISED CR-V ENGINE RANGE PROVIDES ENHANCED OUTPUT AND EFFICIENCY

New 160PS 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine boasts more power than predecessor and reduced CO2 emissions
    Euro6b compliant
Best power-to-consumption ratio of any engine on sale today
New two-stage turbo delivers higher power output
New nine-speed automatic replaces five-speed automatic transmission

The 2015 CR-V is available with a three-strong powertrain line-up, comprising two 1.6-litre diesel engines (160 PS and 120PS) and a 2.0-litre petrol engine (155 PS). All three are Euro6b compliant.

All-new 160 PS 1.6-litre diesel
The CR-V’s diesel line-up, expected to account for more than 60% of sales, has been enhanced with the addition of the all-new 160 PS 1.6 litre i-DTEC four-cylinder unit from Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology series, first introduced in 2013 as a 1.6 litre i-DTEC with 120 PS.

This unique-to-Europe engine replaces the 2.2-litre i-DTEC diesel unit. Aided by a new two-stage turbo, it offers higher power output and better power delivery, as well as superior levels of efficiency and significantly reduced CO2 emissions. As a result, the new engine has the best power-to-consumption ratio available in its segment.

A number of innovations reduce frictional energy losses, with the engine friction of the i-DTEC engine now 37% lower than its predecessor and equivalent to that of a petrol unit. The result is highly impressive fuel economy of 4.9 l/100km (combined cycle).

The engine produces a maximum power of 160 PS (a 6% increase over the 2.2-litre diesel predecessor) and 350 Nm of torque, while emitting a 129 g/km of CO2 (an 11% improvement and a figure not bettered by any similarly-powered competitor) when mated to the six-speed manual transmission.

The 2-stage turbo uses 2 turbo devises located up stream and down stream the exhaust gas flow. The upstream turbo facing a higher exhaust pressure is called the high pressure turbo, the down stream unit facing a lower exhaust pressure called the low pressure turbo. The high-pressure turbo is responsible for air flow to the engine at low engine speeds, while the low-pressure turbo operates at high engine speeds. At mid-range engine speeds, both turbos work in tandem to provide charge air to the engine. The smaller high-pressure turbo is controlled by a variable geometry turbine (VGT) to ensure quick throttle response and reduce pumping losses at low engine speeds. The low-pressure turbo is controlled by a conventional waste gate valve.

The 1.6i-DTEC diesel engine complies with Euro6b emission regulation, meeting emission standards using a NOx storage catalyst (NSC) after-treatment system, continuously alternating NOx adsorption and conversion (reduction) processes.

The focus of development was set to enable a light-off of the catalyst already at low temperatures in order to sufficiently convert NOx emissions yet maintaining the conversion efficiency at high temperatures. Optimisation on ratio of precious metal amount and effective adsorption surface have been performed in order to achieve the target.

Nine-speed automatic transmission
The 2015 CR-V will be available with a newly-developed nine-speed automatic transmission replacing the previous five-speed automatic. The new gearbox offers a number of real-world benefits to European consumers. With a wider spread of gears, the very low first gear ratio ensures a quick and powerful launch, while a high top-gear ratio results in reduced engine speed thus reduces fuel consumption and noise level at cruising speeds.

With a greater number of gears and smaller gear steps, it also provides better response to driver inputs, and smoother shifts giving the sensation of more linear and harmonic acceleration through the gears.

Depending on driving situation – engine speed and throttle application – the new nine-speed automatic transmission can even shift directly down gears from 9th to 5th gear and 7th to 4th gear, additionally to all two gears and one gear downshifts. All other multiple down shifts are overlapped shifts where an additional shift needs to be performed in background in order to achieve the target gear.

The efficient packaging of the new transmission results in a smaller, lighter (by 35 kg) unit, allowing better weight distribution across the vehicle. The new engine and transmission together weigh 65 kg less than the previous equivalent powertrain combination, benefitting ride, handling and steering response, as well as efficiency.

Petrol engine option
The petrol powertrain is also available in four- and two-wheel drive, carried over from the previous CR-V. The 2.0-litre i-VTEC has a maximum power of 155 PS and 192 Nm of torque and is fully Euro6 compliant.

RIDE AND HANDLING: A MORE RESPONSIVE DRIVE AND GREATER CABIN REFINEMENT

New front suspension bushes, dampers and lower-arm knuckle geometry improve ride
Front and rear track increased to aid stability
New steering ratio for a more engaging ride
New, improved NVH to create more pleasurable drive for all occupants

The new CR-V includes upgrades to the chassis for better handling and a more refined ride. The re-thought underpinnings – including new front suspension bushes, dampers, revised lower-arm knuckle geometry and rear tracking arms – all contribute to a smoother, more engaging ride.

The front and rear track have been increased by 15 mm, and camber angle is up by half a degree to further aid stability. The new lighter diesel powertrain reduces weight over the front wheels, increasing cornering agility and handling, while the new nine-speed gearbox also greatly enhances the driving experience, thanks to better drive force continuation (or simply linear acceleration) due to shorter gaps between the gears.

To offer a more responsive drive, the steering ratio has been increased by 8%, reducing reaction delays of the vehicle when swerving around obstacles in the road at high speed while maintaining precise and quick handling at lower speeds for better manoeuvrability.

To cosset occupants from the outside and create a more refined and pleasurable experience, Honda engineers have implemented a number of NVH management measures. These include a doubling in the thickness of the door seals, changes to the floor carpet, and optimisation or enlargement of sound absorption materials in the dash, doors and pillars. Further measures taken include the sealing of the front end of the hood to reduce wind noise. As a result of these and other measures, the 2015 CR-V’s cabin is 6% quieter than its predecessor.

WORLD-FIRST TECHNOLOGIES TO ENHANCE OCCUPANT SAFETY

New safety features: Honda SENSING introduced on 2015 CR-V
    World-first Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control
New automatic low-speed braking system applied as standard
EuroNCAP five-star rating carried over from predecessor

As with all new Honda vehicles sold in Europe, the CR-V is fitted with a number of premium active and passive technologies designed to make driving both easier and safer.

Honda SENSING
Honda has comprehensively updated its sensor based active safety systems, known as Advanced Driving Assist Systems. Under the name ‘Honda SENSING’, the new system now combines both camera and radar technology, allowing for advancements to its Collision Mitigation Braking System and Adaptive Cruise Control systems. Honda SENSING is available on the new CR-V Executive grade.

Honda’s Advanced Driving Assist Systems, including Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition System, Blind Spot Information, Cross Traffic Monitor and High Beam Support System, will be offered in conjunction with Honda SENSING on the Executive grade, or as part of the Advanced Driving Assist Systems pack available as an option on other grades.

CMBS
The newly developed Collision Mitigation Braking System combines both a camera and radar technology capable of operating over an expanded range, combining high and low speed braking, bringing the car to standstill if required.

Using both camera and radar the new CMBS system can detect vehicles from further in the distance and their closing rate between the car and the vehicle (car or truck) directly in front of it. Unlike the current CMBS system, it is also possible to recognise objects such as pedestrians or oncoming cars.

Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control
The 2015 CR-V will be the first vehicle in the world equipped with a predictive cruise control system, known as Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (i-ACC), capable of predicting and automatically reacting to other vehicles ‘cutting-in’ to the vehicle’s lane.

Based on extensive real-world research of typical European driving styles, i-ACC uses a camera and radar to sense the position of other vehicles on the road. It then applies an algorithm to predict the likelihood of vehicles in neighbouring lanes cutting-in by evaluating relations between multiple vehicles, enabling the equipped vehicle to react quickly, safely and comfortably.

i-ACC complements rather than replaces the traditional Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system. Traditional ACC systems keep a preselected longitudinal velocity, which is only reduced to maintain a safe distance from a car in front.
However, if a vehicle cuts-in from a neighbouring lane, these systems only react when the manoeuvre is almost complete.

i-ACC is able to detect the likelihood of a cut-in up to five seconds before it occurs, and is therefore designed to react very smoothly so as not to startle the driver, who might not yet be aware of the imminent cut-in. In this case the system applies just a mild brake initially, with an icon appearing on the driver display, informing the driver why a slow-down occurs. It then proceeds to apply a stronger brake to adapt velocity to keep a safe distance.

i-ACC is intelligent enough to recognise which side of the road the equipped vehicle is on (be it a left- or right-hand drive car), and automatically detects which neighbouring vehicle is the most critical to be aware of at any given moment.

i-ACC is the result of an in-house Research & Development project undertaken by an international Honda team in Europe and Japan, specifically designed for European roads. Research into driver behaviour to develop the algorithm was carried out across Europe.

Dr. Kleinhagenbrock, responsible for i-ACC at Honda R&D Europe (Deutschland) GmbH, comments: “i-ACC takes cruise control systems to a whole new level, offering what we call ‘predictive safety’.”

Dr. Schmuedderich, responsible for i-ACC at Honda Research Institute Europe GmbH comments: “i-ACC is a significant breakthrough and a considerable further step towards a new generation of driver assistance systems that anticipate the behaviour of other traffic participants.”

Lane Keep Assist System
Lane Keep Assist System will continue to be offered on the CR-V as part of Honda SENSING. Lane Keep Assist System uses the multi-purpose camera to track lane markings on the road, ensuring the vehicle remains in the middle of the detected lane. The system operates at speeds of more than 72 km/h where the road has a curve radius of 230 metres or more.

City-Brake Active system
Honda’s City-Brake Active system) will be offered across the model range. Specifically designed to help avoid or mitigate low speed accidents, the system uses laser radar technology to scan the road ahead, automatically applying the brakes if an imminent risk of collision is detected. The system is designed to operate at speeds below 32 km/h.

If the system identifies that the risk of collision exists then pre-braking as well as audible and visual warning will occur, eventually followed by full autonomous braking.
The system can be turned off by the driver only when the vehicle is stationary and it will remain off until the driver turns off the ignition. The system will become active once the ignition is switched back on.

Forward Collision Warning
Forward Collision Warning detects the risk of collision by recognising the vehicle (car or truck) directly in front, using the multi-purpose camera. The system operates when the car is at a speed of 15km/h and above. On detecting the risk of collision, it will offer visual and audible warnings. The warning distance can be adjusted to the driver’s preferences and the system can be turned off by the driver.

Cross Traffic Monitor
Honda’s Cross Traffic Monitor system uses rear side radar sensors to warn the driver of approaching vehicles when reversing. The direction of an approaching vehicle is shown either on the rear-view camera screen or displayed using arrows showing the direction of the travelling vehicle on the intelligent Multi Information Display, and an audible warning sound. The system is designed to detect cars and trucks travelling at up to 25 km/h.

Traffic Sign Recognition System
Traffic Sign Recognition System uses the multi-purpose camera to detect road signs whenever the vehicle is moving forward. The system automatically recognises and displays the signs via the i-MID once the vehicle has passed the sign.

The system is designed to detect circular road signs displaying speed limits and ‘No Passing’ information. Two road signs can be displayed at any one time – the right side of the display only shows speed limit signs while the left shows ‘No Passing’ signs and speed limits with additional information; such as weather conditions, for example.

Lane Departure Warning
Lane Departure Warning uses the multi-purpose camera to track lane markings on the road. If the car deviates from its current lane without indicating, Lane Departure Warning alerts the driver with audible and visual warnings. The system can be turned off by the driver at any time.

High Beam Support System
High Beam Support System works at speeds of more than 40km/h to switch High Beam head lights on/off automatically depending on oncoming/preceding vehicles (cars, trucks and motorcycles), bicycles and environmental brightness. The system can be turned off by the driver at any time.

Civic Type R and NSX Supercar Lead Host of Premieres From Honda at 2015 Geneva Motor Show

Honda to unveil flagship performance models with world premiere of
production Civic Type R and European premiere of NSX
Production models of all-new Jazz and HR-V to be unveiled, as well as first showing in Europe of FCV Concept fuel cell vehicle
2015 McLaren-Honda F1 racer showcased ahead of season opener

Signalling a new era for the Honda brand in Europe, every model in the range will be new or refreshed in 2015, with many being unveiled in production guise for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Performance cars for road and track, family cars and a fuel cell concept will all feature on the Honda stand.

The return of two performance legends

Geneva will see the global premiere of the Honda Civic Type R production car. The ‘race car for the road‘ will be the most extreme Type R ever built, with blistering  performance and thrilling dynamics that set new standards in the segment. A world-first application of Honda’s new 2.0 litre VTEC Turbo engine, aggressive function-led styling and pioneering new chassis technologies combine to deliver one of the most immersive and rewarding driving experiences available in any sector.

For fans keenly anticipating the launch of Honda’s latest hot hatch icon, a dedicated Type R microsite goes live on 28 January. Here fans can explore and share Type R content, in order to gain access to exclusive snapshots of the performance hatchback ahead of its debut in Geneva: http://youtu.be/LJla-AlnlqY

Hot from its global debut in Detroit, the much-anticipated production Honda NSX will make its European debut in Switzerland, twenty-five years after the original. The hybrid supercar has been specifically created to deliver a ‘new sports experience’, challenging conventional beliefs about the supercar segment.

New HR-V and Jazz

Production models of Honda’s all-new HR-V and Jazz will debut ahead of their market launches later in 2015.

The all-new HR-V blends the styling of a coupe with the toughness, space and utility of a SUV in a sporty, characterful and versatile B-segment crossover. Re-entering the segment that Honda pioneered with the original HR-V in 1998, the new 2015 model features eye-catching exterior styling, fun-to-drive performance, class-leading fuel economy and unmatched interior spaciousness.

With a sophisticated new look and an upgraded interior, the third-generation Jazz also makes its debut in Geneva. This car has been redesigned from the ground up, building on the strong reputation of its predecessors and featuring a brand new 1.3 litre petrol engine.

Looking to the future

The Honda FCV Concept demonstrates the exterior and interior styling evolution of the next-generation zero emissions Honda fuel-cell vehicle.

The FCV Concept is intended to provide significant gains in packaging, interior space, cost reduction and real-world performance, including an anticipated driving range in excess of 300 miles and a refuelling time of three to five minutes.

 Iconic McLaren-Honda partnership returns

The 2015 McLaren-Honda Formula 1 racecar will also be on show at Geneva ahead of its competitive debut at the season opener in Melbourne, Australia on 15 March. The new partnership aims to create a legacy to surpass that of the original, when four Constructors’ World Championships were won in four years between 1988 and 1991.

Honda can be found at stand 4250 in Hall 4 at the 85th Geneva Motor Show (3 - 15 March).
