HONDA HYBRID & EV BATTERIES GET ‘SECOND LIFE’ IN NEW RECYCLING INITIATIVE

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/203209/honda-hybrid-and-ev-batteries-get-second-life-in-new-recycling-initiative?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_3378&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Honda Motor Europe is expanding its partnership with SNAM to recycle end-of-life batteries from hybrids and electric vehicles in Europe
SNAM is investigating the possibility of using batteries in a ’second life’ for the storage of renewable energy in industrial applications
New hydrometallurgy processes enable extraction and recycling of materials from batteries not suitable for a second-life application
Dedicated web platform enables dealers to request Europe-wide collection of used batteries

Honda Motor Europe is expanding its battery recycling partnership with SNAM (Société Nouvelle d’Affinage des Métaux) to advance the sustainable usability of its end-of-life traction batteries. The pan-European arrangement will see SNAM collect and recycle batteries from Honda's increasing number of hybrid and electric vehicles and either potentially prepare them for 'second-life' renewable energy storage uses or extract valuable materials for recycling if they are not suitable for that purpose.

Honda and SNAM have worked together since 2013, to ensure the traceability of end-of-life batteries and dispose of them in accordance with European Union environmental standards. The expansion of this agreement will see SNAM collect Lithium-ion and Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries from across Honda's dealer network and Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATF) in 22 countries, before analysing how suitable they are for recycling and processing them accordingly.

Tom Gardner, Senior Vice President at Honda Motor Europe, said: “As demand for Honda’s expanding range of hybrid and electric cars continues to grow so does the requirement to manage batteries in the most environmentally-friendly way possible. Recent market developments may allow us to make use of these batteries in a second life application for powering businesses or by using recent improved recycling techniques to recover useful raw materials which can be used as feedstock into the production of new batteries.”

Safe and low carbon transport is utilised for the collection of used traction batteries. On arrival, SNAM assesses which battery packs are valid for inclusion in a new energy storage device. These are then repurposed and made available by SNAM for domestic and industrial applications.

When battery cells are damaged and unsuitable for ‘second life’ applications, materials such as cobalt and lithium can be extracted using hydrometallurgy techniques involving the use of aqueous chemistry. These can be reused in the production of new batteries, colour pigments or as useful additives for mortar. Other commonly used materials including copper, metal and plastics are recycled and offered to the market for use in the production of a variety of applications.

Dealers can arrange and request the collection of end-of-life batteries for treatment and recycling through SNAM's dedicated online platform. Collection can be arranged from centralised storage hubs within 15 working days, so that dealers do not have to store batteries at their premises. The agreement applies to large ‘traction’ batteries used to power motors in hybrid and electric vehicles, as opposed to smaller batteries used for ignition in petrol or diesel cars.

SNAM is supportive to Honda’s activities on eco-conscious design of future batteries, so that the environmental sound treatment of these batteries at the end of their useful life can be guaranteed.

ALL-NEW HONDA JAZZ: COMPREHENSIVE SAFETY PACKAGE INCLUDES NEW FRONT CENTRE AIRBAG SYSTEM

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/298224/all-new-honda-jazz-comprehensive-safety-package-includes-new-front-centre-airbag-system?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_3413&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Honda includes new front centre airbag technology as standard in the all-new Jazz e:HEV
New technology is part of a range of modifications that reduces the likelihood of head and chest injuries to vehicle occupants in the event of side-on impact
Airbag system supplemented by passive and active systems including Honda‘s ACE™ body structure technology and Honda SENSING driver aid system
Honda's commitment to exceptional occupant safety ensures the Jazz remains one of the safest cars in its class

Exemplifying Honda's commitment to occupant safety, the all-new Jazz is the first of the brand’s models in Europe, and the first model in its class to market, to feature new front-centre airbag technology as standard. The newly introduced passive safety feature is just one element of a comprehensive package of safety features and driver aids for the all-new Jazz, further reinforcing the car’s reputation as one of Europe's safest.

New front-centre airbag system

The new front centre airbag is fitted within the back of the driver’s seat and expands into the space between driver and passenger. This new airbag, one of 10 in the new Jazz, helps to avoid direct contact and reduce impact between a driver and a passenger in the event of a side-on collision. In order to ensure the airbag is accurately placed to deliver maximum protection during deployment, the airbag uses three attachment tethers which guide the airbag around the driver in a curve. To realise this new feature, the engineering team developed the airbag unit to fit within the upper bolster of the newly designed driver’s seat.

The new front centre airbag works in concert with two other features in the event of a side on collision. The seat belt pre-tensioners for both driver and passenger work to reduce lateral occupant movement and are further supported by the centre armrest which has increased in height. Overall the impact of this new approach can reduce injury to the head by 85% for near-side passenger and 98% for far-side passenger (Honda internal testing).

Further improvements for new Jazz include the rear seat i-side Airbag System. This unique double-structure airbag, installed in the rear seat pad, activates to protect rear occupants from impacts against the door and C-pillar in the event of side-on collisions. The airbag is also designed in compact size in order not to detract from the unique magic seat function of Jazz.

These new advancements in occupant safety come as Euro NCAP, the European consumer protection organisation for vehicle safety, introduces new test requirements in 2020 in recognition of the severe effects of side-on collisions. The new assessments will expand the scope of investigations into side-on collisions from the far-side.

"Occupant safety is of the utmost importance for our designers when we develop a new car," said Takeki Tanaka, Large Project Leader for Honda. "We completely redesigned the latest generation Jazz from the ground up, which meant that we were able to incorporate new advanced structural technologies and the latest passive safety features to provide exceptional protection from all kinds of accidents. With the addition of an upgraded suite of advanced safety features and driver aids as standard, we are confident that the all-new Jazz remains one of the safest cars in its class."

In addition to the new front-centre airbag, an SRS airbag system in front of the driver's knee reduces impact on the lower limbs and contributes to the improvement of occupant protection performance for the head and chest by supressing forward movement of the entire body.

Passive safety engineered into vehicle structure

The all-new Jazz incorporates Honda's proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure technology that forms the foundation for excellent passive safety performance, enhancing occupant crash protection.

A network of connected structural elements distributes crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle, reducing the forces transferred to the passenger compartment. ACE™ not only protects the car and its passengers by dispersing the collision energy throughout the body structure, but it also reduces the collision energy against the other vehicle too. Its safety performance helps protect occupants from collisions with large and small vehicles alike.

Enhanced active safety technologies as standard

The passive safety features on the new Jazz are complemented by the Honda SENSING suite of active safety and driver assist technologies which have been enhanced for the latest model. A new wider angle, higher definition camera replaces the multi-purpose camera and City-Brake Active System (CTBA) sensor set-up of the previous-generation Jazz. The camera recognises a more comprehensive range of road surface and traffic characteristics. These include detecting if the vehicle approaches the outer edge of a pavement (into a grass or gravel border), an oncoming vehicle, or drifting into another lane without indicating and, road signs. The camera is also able to eliminate fogging for a constantly clear field of view.

The enhanced Honda SENSING suite of technologies includes:

Collision Mitigation Braking System with improved night-time operation to also detect pedestrians when there is no street lighting. The system also alerts the driver when it detects a cyclist cutting across. In addition, the system now applies the brakes when the Jazz cuts across or turns into the path of a oncoming vehicle. This is enabled by the newly-developed front wide view camera.
Adaptive Cruise Control which manages the gap to the car in front automatically and allows the car to follow traffic at low speeds in congestion (Low Speed Follow).
Lane Keeping Assist System operates from 72km/h on urban and rural roads – as well as multi-lane highways – for increased safety in more situations.
Road Departure Mitigation System assists the driver to not stray from the road. It alerts the driver if it detects the vehicle approaching the outer edge of the pavement (into a grass or gravel border), an oncoming vehicle, or drifting into another lane without indicacting.
Traffic Sign Recognition System uses the front wide view camera to detect road signs whenever the vehicle is moving forward. The system automatically recognises and displays the signs via the seven-inch LCD display once the vehicle has passed the sign. The system is designed to detect circular road signs displaying speed limits and ‘No Passing’ information. Two road signs can be displayed at any one time – the right side of the display only shows speed limit signs while the left shows ‘No Passing’ signs and speed limits with additional information; such as weather conditions, for example.
Intelligent Speed Limiter recognises traffic speed signs and sets the speed limit. If the traffic sign shows a slower speed compared to the actual vehicle speed, an indicator on the display flashes with an alarm sound and the system gradually decreases the vehicle speed.
Auto High-Beam works at speeds of more than 40km/h to switch High Beam head lights on/off automatically depending on oncoming/preceding vehicles (cars, trucks and motorcycles), bicycles and environmental brightness.
Blind Spot Information, complete with Cross Traffic Monitor is standard on Executive grade.

Jazz e:HEV has been engineered to deliver a compelling blend of strong performance and impressive efficiency to complement its class-leading levels of interior comfort and usability.

To revolutionise the essence of its compact city car, Honda focused on a new design philosophy, encapsulated in the Japanese notion of 'Yoo no bi'. This recognises the beauty that exists in everyday items, which have been honed over time to make them even more beautiful and ergonomically satisfying to use for their specific purpose.

"We have developed this car as an entity that has the power to enrich the daily lives of those who use it." explains Takeki Tanaka, Jazz Large Project Leader.

An evolution of the timeless Jazz shape, the design of the new Jazz introduces smooth contours which follow the short nose and cabin-forward style of previous generations. The result of this design evolution is a new emotional appeal to add to the class-leading levels of comfort and practicality for which Jazz is renowned.

When developing the all-new Jazz, Honda engineers worked closely with the design team to ensure the car retained the class-leading levels of interior space that is the hallmark of previous generations. They achieved this through the clever packaging of hybrid drivetrain components into the chassis and within the engine bay.

The e:HEV system is newly developed for Jazz and engineered to deliver enjoyment to the driving experience. It comprises two energy-dense electric motors, a 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, a lithium-ion battery and an innovative fixed-gear transmission, which all work harmoniously together to deliver the best ratio of fuel economy to acceleration in its class.

Intuitive technology and seamless in-car connectivity integrate with occupants' everyday lives with ease, supported by a comprehensive suite of infotainment services, including Honda Personal Assistant and My Honda+ app (not available on all grades).

Featuring the most comprehensive suite of advanced safety features and driver aids in its class, the Honda Jazz and Jazz Crosstar are fitted with active and passive Honda safety technology designed to make driving both easier and safer.

Honda Jazz Crosstar

New variant to the all-new Jazz range
SUV style design appeals to drivers who lead active lifestyles

The Crosstar variant of the all-new Jazz presents a more SUV-style proposition, orientated toward those with active lifestyles. Available with the same hybrid powertrain and interior features as the standard model, the new Crosstar adds increased ride height, water-resistant upholstery and integrated roof rails.

The model's enhanced visual presence is also bolstered by a bolder front grille design, black cladding around the wheelarches and stylish side sills. The Crosstar-specific 16-inch silver and black alloy wheels create a sense of increased stability and complete the variant’s overall robust visual impact.

    2. Powerful e:HEV hybrid technology delivers a compelling blend of performance and efficiency

New Jazz is the first model to be presented under Honda's new e:TECHNOLOGY branding
Newly-developed hybrid technology features two compact motors combined with a 1.5-litre DOHC i-VTEC petrol engine
Maximum power output of 109 PS / 80kW and 253 Nm of electric propulsion torque

For the first time, the Jazz will be sold exclusively across Europe with an advanced hybrid powertrain. Carrying Honda's new e:HEV badge, the all-new Jazz has been engineered to deliver an exceptional blend of strong performance and impressive efficiency, to complement its class-leading levels of interior comfort and ultimate usability.

The e:HEV system is newly developed for Jazz and engineered to deliver an enjoyable driving experience. It consists of two compact, powerful electric motors connected to a 1.5-litre DOHC i-VTEC petrol engine, a lithium-ion battery and an innovative fixed-gear transmission via an intelligent power control unit, which all work harmoniously together to provide a smooth and direct response.

The total output of 109 PS / 80kW can propel the car to 100km/h in 9.4 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 175 km/h. The effect is an effortless and comfortable journey, whether travelling through urban areas or cruising at high speed on motorways. Its fuel-efficient hybrid system produces CO2 emissions from 102 g/km (WLTP) and fuel economy of 4.5l/100km (WLTP) on the standard model and 110 g/km (WLTP) and 4.8l/100km (WLTP) on the Crosstar.

To deliver such a highly-rewarding driving experience and exceptional efficiency, the advanced e:HEV hybrid set-up seamlessly selects from three interchangeable drive modes:

EV Drive: the lithium-ion battery supplies power to the electric propulsion motor directly
Hybrid Drive: the engine supplies power to the electric generator motor, which in turn supplies it to the electric propulsion motor
Engine Drive: the petrol engine is connected directly to the wheels via a lock-up clutch and driveforce is transmitted directly from engine to the wheels

In most urban driving situations, optimum efficiency is achieved through seamless transitions between EV Drive and Hybrid Drive. For driving at highway speeds, Engine Drive is used, supplemented by an on-demand peak power ‘boost’ from the electric propulsion motor for fast acceleration.

In Hybrid Drive, excess power from the petrol engine can also be diverted to recharge the battery via the generator motor. EV Drive is also engaged when the car is decelerating, harvesting energy through regenerative braking to recharge the battery.

Switching between the three driving modes is unnoticeable to occupants; Jazz engineers dedicated significant efforts to minimising lag during transitions. The high-speed electric motors have been developed in-house by Honda to be as lightweight, compact and efficient as possible, the electric propulsion motor spins up to 13,300 rpm to achieve a maximum speed of 175 km/h. The maximum torque is generated at 0 rpm for substantial low-speed acceleration.

Rather than using a conventional transmission, Jazz is equipped with a newly-developed Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (e-CVT) with a single fixed-gear ratio to create a direct connection between moving components. The result is a smooth and reassuring transfer of torque with a linear feel during acceleration across all drive modes.

When in Hybrid Drive mode the all-new e-CVT control logic ensures that the electric propulsion motor provides powerful torque, whilst the engine provides a direct and linear feel during acceleration, similar to that of a multi-stage transmission. When more power is required, the new control logic can constantly select the ideal engine speed. This has the impact of maintaining a relationship between vehicle speed and engine speed and a more linear feeling, experienced by the driver and passengers as acceleration sound. This optimised torque output, with more responsive and consistent delivery, is a key component of the fun-to-drive character of Jazz.

As well as being more refined, the e-CVT developed for Jazz is more compact than the conventional planetary e-CVT units typically found in hybrid vehicles from other marques. With a focus on dimensions and clever integration, the new e-CVT is an example of the intelligent packaging evident elsewhere on Jazz.

Jazz is the first model in Honda's European line-up to wear the new e:HEV branding that will appear on all future Honda full hybrid vehicles.

 3. Redefining compact class design: Seamless contemporary design introduced to iconic shape of the Jazz

Jazz introduces 'Yoo no bi' design philosophy
Evolution of the iconic Jazz silhouette with smooth lines and contours
A-pillar width reduced by half for improved visibility

When designing and developing the latest generation Jazz, Honda engineers took the bold step of completely reimagining the model from the ground up. In the process they conceived a compelling new proposition in the compact segment: an all-new city car that combines exceptional efficiency with outstanding everyday usability, ready to meet the needs of modern consumers.

The new seamless and contemporary design evolution introduces a beautiful simplicity to the timeless shape of Jazz. Its smooth contours follow the short nose, long roof line and cabin-forward style of previous generations, to form the instantly-recognisable monoform silhouette. The result adds a new emotional appeal to the class-leading levels of comfort and practicality for which the Jazz is renowned.

"We have developed this car as an entity that has the power to enrich the daily lives of those who use it." explains Takeki Tanaka, Large Project Leader.

The smooth exterior surface treatment and sleek front face are key to achieving a sophisticated visual balance, with all the different exterior surfaces, including the C-pillars and rear combination lamps, blended together, devoid of any lines.

For the designers, creating the right visual proportions was key to creating harmonious styling characteristic, inside and out. This is initiated by the new ultra-thin A-pillars that flow up in an arc from the bonnet to the broad-shouldered rear fenders.

The A-pillar thickness has been more than halved from 116mm to just 55mm with the pillar behind now providing the main structural strength. This, along with the hidden windscreen wipers, provides the driver and front seat passenger with an unobstructed, expansive field of vision. The sweeping A-pillars and a sleek door-mirror design also minimise noise and drag caused by wind turbulence and increase aerodynamic efficiency.

The overall height is reduced by 10mm, which combines with a forward-leaning tailgate design to create a more compact-looking, well-balanced cabin and a reassuringly surefooted stance.

New advanced structural technologies and processes, such as adopting the latest semiconductor technology to downsize the Power Control Unit, are key to incorporating the new two-motor hybrid drivetrain while allowing the traditional dynamic Jazz shape to be retained. Despite incorporating a new two-motor hybrid driveline, the new Jazz is only 16mm longer than the previous petrol model, and remains the same width.

Baek Jongkuk, all-new Jazz designer, explains, “I wanted to create a car which was a “kind companion” for the owner, while maximising its usability. I did this by minimising unnecessary features and simplifying exterior lines to deliver a car which features a friendly, fresh appearance, complete with a comfortable and practical interior.”

Sleek styling enhancements, including a refined rear roof spoiler and a premium-look light cluster design, complement the dynamic Jazz shape and maintain the well-balanced profile.

Jazz Crosstar

To broaden the appeal of the model, the rugged Jazz Crosstar variant presents a more SUV-style proposition, orientated toward those with active lifestyles. The model's increased presence comes from a bold front grille design, black cladding around the wheelarches and stylish side sills and roof rails. The Crosstar-specific silver and black alloy wheels create an increased sense of stability and enhance the overall robust visual effect. To further differentiate from the standard Jazz model, the Crosstar variant is also available with its own unique Surf Blue paint colour, plus customers have the opportunity to specify a contrasting Crystal Black roof.

    4. Clever packaging and class-leading comfort for ultimate usability

Optimal packaging provides class-best passenger and cargo space
298 litres of cargo capacity rises to 1,199 litres with rear seats folded
Rear seat passengers enjoy enhanced levels of comfort and space
Renowned Magic Seats offer maximum load space versatility

Creating a comfortable, feel-good interior

The philosophy of 'Yoo no bi' continues in the clean, minimalist interior, wrapping utility, practicality and functionality in a simple, uncluttered ergonomic cabin. To introduce the car’s pleasing utility, durable materials and contemporary, soft-touch dashboard materials are applied throughout the cabin.

The uncluttered, user-focused dashboard incorporates a slim instrument panel that sweeps horizontally across the cabin, with no visor effect restricting the field of vision, further enhancing the sense of exceptional spaciousness. With Honda placing ultimate usability at the core of the design ethos, the central HMI 9-inch touchscreen - standard on Elegance and Executive grades - and 7-inch full TFT instrument cluster - standard across the range - are simple and easy to read. Convenience features and controls are easy to reach and use, contributing to a stress-free driving experience.

Adding to the refined ambience, the flat, wide centre console armrest is height-aligned with the door armrest, echoing the interior comfort levels of larger, premium cars.

The contemporary interior of the Jazz builds on the class-leading levels of interior space that is the hallmark of previous generations.

The ultra-thin A-pillars that flow up in an arc from the bonnet improve horizontal visibility from the previous generation model’s 69 degrees to a class-leading 90 degrees. This, along with the hidden windscreen wipers and flat dashboard, allows unobstructed views and natural light to flow into the cabin through the panoramic windscreen and front quarter glass. Such abundance of light provides a sense of spaciousness for occupants, enhances the airiness in the cabin and contributes to the interior's bright, open feel.

The luggage capacity (with rear seats up) starts from 298 litres and increases to an impressive 1,199 litres (to the roof with the rear seats down). This was achieved through the clever packaging of hybrid drivetrain components into the chassis and within the engine bay.

Fundamental developments include incorporating the air intake and components on top of the engine. This allows room for the electric motors (propulsion motor and generator) to be integerated into the engine compartment, as well as the power control unit (PCU), which is reduced by 20% compared with conventional technology. This also allows the auxiliary 12v battery to fit into the engine compartment, freeing up space at the rear. This clever packaging is made possible by using the newest semiconductors for the power control unit.

Also key to maximising cabin room is the positioning of the fuel tank in the centre of the chassis beneath the front seats, which is unique in this class. This enables the Jazz to retain the exceptionally versatile rear Magic Seat configuration that offers both fold-flat or flip-up seat flexibility, offering optimum versatility to accommodate cargo of various shapes and sizes. The packaging and overall design also permits a wider tailgate opening and new stepless flat floor that makes loading and unloading the boot easier than ever.

Front seat occupants also benefit from Honda's newly developed body stabilising seat frame with premium mat-structure support and a 30mm seat padding thickness increase. These changes enhance comfort levels and provide greater lumbar support to minimise fatigue. To further increase driver comfort, the position of the brake pedal has been changed to optimise the foot angle offering a more natural foot placement. In addition, to support taller drivers, the steering wheel is now 2 degrees more upright and the range of adjustment has been revised to allow the wheel to be come closer to the driver.

Adults in the second row also travel in increased comfort thanks to the redesign of the Magic Seat structure allowing the hinges to be moved outside of the passenger hip points. Class-leading rear leg space of 986mm – made possible by the torsion beam suspension lay out - and seat padding thickness that has been increased by 24mm also adds to the enhanced comfort levels. Designers have also added in convenient smartphone pockets in the back of the front seats for rear occupants to use.

    5. Exceptional driving dynamics for an effortless driving experience

Improved body rigidity enables suspension enhancements for agile handling
Low friction suspension and new damper systems improve ride quality

Cabin ambience improved through the reduction of road noise in three frequency ranges

All-disc braking system ensures powerful and secure stopping power

Building on the Jazz's driving dynamics and responsive performance, Honda has enhanced the car’s chassis, suspension and body rigidity for exceptional agility and best-in-class ride comfort.

The ratio of higher tensile strength steel has risen by 80% for the new Jazz, helping to reduce weight and improve safety performance in the event of a crash, static bending is improved by 6% while static torsion is improved by 13%.

The adoption of a new aluminium die-cast rear damper mount structure improves the driving experience. While further suspension improvements, such as new spring material and reduced friction-bush design, plus the rear torsion beam suspension layout, also support the outstanding ride comfort and driving enjoyment.

The front suspension geometry has a low front roll centre to enhance stability, which helps the Jazz feel precise, natural and agile when cornering. Its agility is further augmented by an electric power-assisted steering system and steering ratio improvements, which deliver accurate feedback to the driver and provide more natural direction-changing behaviour.

The low friction suspension components combine with the long wheelbase to provide an impressive base level of stability by naturally reducing pitching motions. Sophisticated damper systems also contribute to a more comfortable ride for all occupants, and minimise the transmission of vibrations from the road into the cabin, contributing to the car's refined composure.

Responsive handling combined with enhanced ride composure is further optimised by Honda’s Agile Handling Assist (AHA) system. AHA is another advanced technology that improves the dynamic stability of the car, particularly when reacting to fast steering inputs or high cornering loads. AHA operates through the Vehicle Stability Assist system and applies a light braking force, imperceptible to the driver, to the inner wheels when the steering wheel is turned. The result is increased vehicle responsiveness and stability, and a more stable driving experience.

Powerful stopping power is ensured by an all-disc braking system featuring 262 mm ventilated front discs and 239 mm solid discs at the rear. Electronic brake systems include: Vehicle Stability Assist, Brake Assist System, Hill Start Assist and Automatic Brake Hold.

Honda’s all encompassing approach to NVH management ensures minimal cabin intrusion of engine, road and wind noise. Increased insulation and sound deadening reduce road noise from road surface variations, improving cabin ambience in three frequency ranges. The cabin and floor panel are separated to reduce resonance through the car's structure, and sound insulation has been added around the dashboard. Noise from the engine has also been reduced through the use of resin material to the engine mount to insulate the engine bay. The sound absorbing materials and thicker glass contribute to a 10% reduction in noise intrusion to the cabin over the previous Jazz model.

Additionally, the improved body stiffness and the use of higher tensile strength steel affords new structural technologies to be utilised to allow for the new thin A-pillars, complemented by the aerodynamic door mirror design, rear spoiler and new alloy wheel design. These aerodynamic features minimise airflow noise, help to reduce drag and improve refinement.

6. Advanced in-car technology connects owners to their everyday lives

Seamless, intuitive in-car connectivity is unrivalled in its class
WiFi hotspot capability and remote services keep occupants connected on the move
AI-powered ‘Honda Personal Assistant’ delivers voice-enabled features
My Honda+ app keeps owners connected when they are away from the car

The all-new Jazz offers the most compelling infotainment package in its segment, combining intuitive technology with seamless in-car connectivity. Next-generation advanced functionality features first seen on Honda e are fitted to all-new Jazz and will be rolled out on future models.

Owners will be able to access a wide range of easy-to-use built-in connectivity features that set a new technology benchmark in the compact segment. Connected infotainment features and apps can be accessed via touchscreen or voice activation, including weather, parking locations, music, navigation, location finding, and telephone services.

The simple-to-use LCD touchscreen interface is designed to minimise driver distraction; operation time for the most regularly-used controls is reduced by 58% compared with the previous model, providing a safer and more ergonomic experience. The system interface is navigated using familiar smartphone-style usability, with swipe controls to scroll through pages and lists. The display can be configured to suit any usage requirements, incorporating customisable shortcuts to frequently used functions and audio sources.

The comprehensive suite of in-built apps can be supplemented by smartphone mirroring, enabled by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, with the latter available via wireless connection for the first time in the Jazz. Even the owners manual can be accessed via the onboard touch infotainment system or through AI voice control for customers who have subscribed to Honda Personal Assistant. Occupants also have the opportunity to benefit from in-car WiFi to keep them connected to web services while on the move.

The new Jazz Crosstar boasts an exceptional eight-speaker premium sound system that includes an aluminimum dome tweeter, Honda-unique Kevlar cone speakers and a subwoofer in the rear luggage space, and achieves the best acoustic performance in this segment. In order to not affect visabillity the tweeter has been built in to the inner door handle, while the subwoofer box is placed where it doesn’t intrude on luggage space.

The car's interior designers paid great attention to detail when creating the uncluttered dashboard and interface. In response to consumer demand, Honda has reinstated physical controls for key functions, with tactile, precise-feeling dials for heating and ventilation settings.

My Honda+ app

Honda has launched its My Honda+ smartphone app to keep owners connected to their car remotely. The smartphone-based service has been designed with a simple, intuitive user experience that provides secure access to a range of in-car functions, including convenience and security features. For example, journey information can be set up and sent from the app to the car and it can also lock and unlock the car remotely.

For additional security, the app provides location monitoring and car tracking via GPS. Intelligent Geofencing can also be activated to alert the owner if the vehicle breaches a pre-set ‘geofence’ zone, plus a security notification delivered to the smartphone app if the car's security alarm is activated.

Honda Personal Assistant

The infotainment and connectivity features accessed via the advanced touchscreen interface can also be activated using voice commands, through Honda Personal Assistant. First seen in the Honda e, the intuitive Honda Personal Assistant is a smart artificial intelligence (AI) agent which harnesses natural, smart instruction-based conversations and contextual understanding to access a range of online services.

The Honda Personal Assistant assesses command inputs with a level of complexity beyond the capabilities of other voice activated virtual assistants. The system understands several levels of interaction, for more exact responses to specific queries. An owner can ask, for example: "OK Honda, find me an Italian restaurant with free parking, WiFi, and that’s open now." The Honda Personal Assistant locates suitable options and presents them on the touchscreen interface, before plotting the optimal route to the chosen location and displaying it on the navigation screen.

To achieve optimum stress-free ownership, Honda will deliver over-the-air updates to ensure that features and apps benefit from enhancements and new functions.

For added security all vehicles feature E-Call for roadside assistance as standard. In the event of an emergency, such as airbag deployment, the car's location is automatically shared with the relevant emergency services.

7. Comprehensive suite of Honda safety technologies

All-new Jazz includes a comprehensive active and passive safety package as standard
Enhanced Honda SENSING technology includes new wider angle high-definition camera
Occupants protected by 10 airbags in the all new Jazz, including a new front centre airbag - a first-to-market in its class

The latest-generation Jazz incorporates as standard a suite of premium active and passive safety technologies designed to make driving both easier and safer.

Enhanced Honda SENSING active safety technology offers a broad range of driver assistance features and driver aids as standard, thanks to a newly-developed front wideview camera that enhances the field of vision and night-time operation, increasing safety in more situations.

The enhanced Honda SENSING suite of technologies includes:

Collision Mitigation Braking System with improved night-time operation to also detect pedestrians when there is no street lighting. The system also alerts the driver when it detects a cyclist cutting across. In addition, the system now applies the brakes when the Jazz cuts across or turns into the path of an oncoming vehicle. This is enabled by the newly-developed front wideview camera.
Adaptive Cruise Control which manages the gap to the car in front automatically and allows the car to follow traffic at low speeds in congestion (Low Speed Follow).
Lane Keeping Assist System operates from 72km/h (45mph) on urban and rural roads – as well as multi-lane highways – for increased safety in more situations.
Road Departure Mitigation System assists the driver to not stray from the road. It alerts the driver if it detects the vehicle approaching the outer edge of the pavement (into a grass or gravel border), an oncoming vehicle, or drifting into another lane without indicacting.
Blind Spot Information, complete with Cross Traffic Monitor is standard on Executive grade.
Traffic Sign Recognition System uses the front wideview camera to detect road signs whenever the vehicle is moving forward.
Auto High-Beam works at speeds of more than 40km/h (25mph) to switch High Beam head lights on/off automatically depending on oncoming/preceding vehicles (cars, trucks and motorcycles), bicycles and environmental brightness.

The new wider angle, higher definition camera replaces the multi-purpose camera and City-Brake Active System sensor set-up of the previous-generation Jazz. The camera recognises a more comprehensive range of road surface and traffic characteristics. These include detecting if the vehicle approaches the outer edge of a pavement (into a grass or gravel border), an oncoming vehicle, or drifting into another lane without indicating, and road signs. The camera is also able to eliminate condensation for a constantly clear field of view.

The driver can decide how much driver assistance information is displayed on the seven-inch TFT liquid crystal display (LCD) instrument binnacle.

Passive safety engineered into the Jazz structure

Passive safety is as important to Honda as active safety to protect occupants in the event of an accident. Jazz owners and occupants are now protected by 10 airbags, including two new rear side airbags installed in the rear seats and a new front centre airbag installed in the front seat. The new front centre airbag is a first-to-market in it’s class and activates in the event of a collision to reduce impact caused by contact between passengers. The Jazz has also been fitted with whiplash-mitigating front headrests.

Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition is the 2020 WTCR Official Safety Car

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/303934/honda-civic-type-r-limited-edition-is-the-2020-wtcr-official-safety-car?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_3553&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Honda will be at the forefront of both safety and competition when the WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup season gets underway, with the new Civic Type R Limited Edition becoming the Official Safety Car of the series for 2020.

Unveiled in February at the Milan headquarters of Honda's long-term motorsport collaborator and official partner, JAS Motorsport, the Civic Type R Limited Edition is one of two new variants to be added to the Type R line-up for 2020 and is the most extreme version of the iconic hatchback to be made to date.

Developed in keeping with Type R tradition, and with track performance the primary focus, it also includes the same industry-leading active safety and driver-assistive technologies that helped the Civic range - which includes the standard Type R on which the Honda Civic Type R TCR racer is based - earn top ratings in Euro NCAP tests.

The Type R Limited Edition Safety Car will carry a resplendent livery featuring the 'Sunlight Yellow' colour - the same colour that the dynamic front-wheel drive hatchback will be available to customers in.

In addition to features that optimise on-track performance, such as lightweight 20" forged BBS alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup-2 tyres, 2-piece floating brake discs and modified dampers, the Limited Edition's stripped-back interior helps contribute to a weight reduction of 47kg compared to the GT-specification Type R.

The Limited Edition retains the Type R’s powerful 2.0-litre VTEC Turbo engine, which has a peak power output of 320PS at 6,500rpm and peak torque of 400Nm. 0-100km/h (0-62mph) is achieved in 5.7 seconds.

The livery of the Civic Type R Safety Car is inspired by the aggressive philosophy behind the production vehicle, and is the work of Belgian artist Vanuf, who has designed many of Honda's official liveries for its touring car programmes.

The 2020 WTCR season will consist of six rounds at European venues, starting at the Salzburgring in Austria on the weekend of 12-13 September. Four Honda Civic Type R TCRs will be campaigned - two by ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport, and a further two by ALL-INKL.DE Münnich Motorsport.

François Ribeiro, Head of Eurosport Events, the WTCR promoter, said: "Honda has a rich history in FIA World Touring Car competition and its long-standing commitment to the category is second to none, so we are delighted to welcome Honda as the new Official Safety Car Partner of the WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup with its Civic Type R Limited Edition. Having such an iconic car as the Civic Type R as the Official Safety Car - with its excellent safety rating, its sporty, dynamic qualities, as well as its affordability - fits perfectly with the philosophy of WTCR."

HONDA CIVIC TYPE R LIMITED EDITION SETS NEW LAP RECORD AT ICONIC SUZUKA CIRCUIT

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/304370/honda-civic-type-r-limited-edition-sets-new-lap-record-at-iconic-suzuka-circuit?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_3585&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

New front-wheel drive record set at the Suzuka Circuit, with a 2:23:993 lap time
Limited Edition model is most extreme Type R to date
Record further reinforces Civic Type R’s position as a class benchmark

Honda’s most extreme Type R yet, the Civic Type R Limited Edition has set a new 2 mins 23.993 secs lap record1 for a front-wheel drive car at the world-renowned Suzuka Circuit in Japan2.

The Suzuka Circuit is a 5.8 km track famous for its high-speed chicanes and challenging corners, incorporated in a 'figure eight' layout that includes a long 1.2 km back straight that passes over an earlier part of the circuit. With its lightweight components, suspension and steering upgrades, and a stripped-back, driver-focused interior, the Civic Type R Limited Edition has pushed the boundaries of what’s possible from front wheel drive, on one of the most demanding tracks in motorsport.

Widely regarded as a highlight in the Formula 1 calendar, Suzuka has been an important test bed for developing performance Honda vehicles and engines since 1962. It was built on the instruction of company founder and president, Soichiro Honda, who famously said: "Automobiles cannot be improved if they are not put through their paces on the racing circuit."

The record-breaking lap was achieved by a Type R Limited Edition development car as it underwent its final performance evaluation in February 2020. The development car featured the same technical specifications representative of the production version, with no modifications or performance enhancements. The Type R Limited Edition is on sale across Europe now.

Hideki Kakinuma, Civic Type R Project Leader commented: "The Type R Limited Edition reflects Honda's dedication to refining the essence and driving pleasure of Type R as a sportscar and exceeding the expectations of our customers. The engineering team and I embraced a racing spirit that has been passed down for generations, and it’s this strong passion that’s driving the evolution of the Civic Type R towards becoming the ideal sportscar.

“For this model change, speed was further pursued in collaboration with Honda Racing Development (HRD) Sakura, which plays a key role in Honda’s motorsport development. This partnership led to the establishment of the fastest Type R3 lap record at Suzuka Circuit, often described as “one of the greatest circuits in the world.”

Just 100 of the Type R Limited Edition will be built for Europe, each benefitting from the standard Type R's outstanding driving dynamics and performance. The new Limited Edition features lightweight 20-inch forged BBS alloy wheels with high grip Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres. These are designed exclusively for outstanding circuit performance but still deliver exceptional on-road performance, whilst providing a 10kg weight saving.

Modified dampers optimise this new wheel and tyre combination and, together with recalibrated steering, offer maximum control and feedback. The Adaptive Damper System’s control software now evaluates road conditions faster, resulting in improved damper reactions for both better handling response and ride quality.

"Throughout testing, the introduction of a new two-piece floating brake system demonstrated braking feel and deceleration power exactly as intended by the driver” added Kakinuma san. “Combined with the improvement of load control performance, the result was a reduction in overall braking time and exceptional high-speed cornering performance, specifically enabling vital speed to be carried though the challenging 'S' curve and the second corner of the Spoon Curve at Suzuka. In addition to the increased braking performance, the exceptional grip from the adoption of Michelin Cup2 tyres and upgrades to the suspension and damper system control also provided the vehicle with highly-efficient dynamics and control, to easily manage the high speed switches of direction through the flowing Esses.

“Reduction of the unsprung weight from the lightweight forged wheels further improved road holding and increased traction during acceleration from the two tight Degner Curves and the famous 130R corner. An increase in engine cooling performance also enabled the vehicle to fully utilise its 320PS output to reach top speed on the back straight towards the end of the lap. All these advancements achieved by this Type R Limited Edition were proven by the time recorded at Suzuka Circuit.”

The new Limited Edition model retains the Type R’s powerful 2.0-litre VTEC Turbo engine. Peak power output is 320PS at 6,500 rpm and peak torque is 400 Nm from 2,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm. 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) is achieved in 5.7 seconds.

The striking Type R Limited Edition will be available in an exclusive new colour, 'Sunlight Yellow', and will feature an exclusive dark chrome Civic badge on the rear hatch and a contrasting gloss black roof. Gloss black wing mirrors and an intake vent on the bonnet complete its aggressive styling.

The interior of the flagship Civic Type R Limited Edition echoes Honda's sporting bloodline with red bucket seats and a plaque marking the build number of the car. The Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and a newly designed teardrop style gear knob provides the driver with a greater sense of oneness with the Type R even on the highly technical Suzuka Circuit. The track-focused nature of the car means the infotainment and air conditioning systems are omitted to save weight, but the rear seats remain to ensure that that the Limited Edition retains the everyday usability for which the Civic is renowned. The new tyres and wheels, together with new lightweight components and a stripped-back interior all contribute to a 47kg weight reduction compared to the Type R GT variant.

Kakinuma san concluded; “The “advanced” Type R which I envisioned at the beginning of this development is now a reality, and I am overwhelmed by the result and how our efforts have been rewarded.

“The mission of Civic Type R is to continue to be considered as the “ultimate” vehicle. There is no end to this challenge. We believe that this model update enabled the Civic Type R to take one step closer to the ideal sportscar Honda envisions. Please enjoy!”

In addition to the new Limited Edition, the Civic Type R range has been extended to include a Sport Line variant that combines outstanding performance with a stealthier design and increased comfort. All models in the new Type R line-up, including the standard GT, have been upgraded for 2020, offering drivers many of the same performance enhancements that helped the Limited Edition achieve its record-breaking lap around the Suzuka Circuit.

These enhancements include the upgraded braking system, with two-piece floating front brake discs and new brake pads, which increases the car’s capabilities during high intensity driving. Meanwhile, the suspension set-up and Adaptive Damper System have also been improved across all Type R models for more responsive, sharper handling and improved ride quality.

Honda's tenth generation Civic Type R GT broke the front-wheel drive lap record at the Nurburgring Nordschliefe in 2017 with a lap time of 7 minutes 43.8 seconds. Following this success, a production specification Civic Type R GT went on to break front wheel drive production car records at five legendary European racetracks with Honda racing stars behind the wheel.

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/305673/honda-e-and-fireblade-take-centre-stage-at-prestigious-red-dot-design-museum?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_3647&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Award-winning Honda e and CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP inducted into world-renowned Red Dot Design Museum
Design experts present Honda e as a 'car of the future', with exceptional design and ground-breaking connectivity, awarding it two Red Dot accolades
CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP superbike recognised for its outstanding design and balanced performance
Award wins reflect Honda's commitment to creating beautiful products that are designed without compromise

Honda's next-generation electric car, the Honda e, and CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP superbike have been inducted into the historic Red Dot Design Museum, one of the world's most significant exhibitions of contemporary design. The Honda e also takes centre stage in the special "Milestones in Contemporary Design" exhibition, as one of the 76 best products of 2020 and a current marker in international product design.

Honda’s highly acclaimed Honda e compact electric vehicle was recently awarded the ‘Red Dot: Best of the Best 2020’ award for ground-breaking product design. This is the highest honour in the internationally renowned Red Dot Award: Product Design and is reserved for the best products in each category. The Honda e also received the Red Dot 2020 accolade in the meta-category 'Smart Products', whilst the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP was awarded a Red Dot for outstanding design in the motorcycle category.

Both vehicles are an essential part of the 2020/21 special exhibition in the internationally renowned Red Dot Design Museum, Essen, Germany.

Peter Zec, CEO and founder of the Red Dot Design Award said: "The Honda e is not just a car - it is much more. The Honda e was awarded the Red Dot: Best of the Best because the jury was amazed by the car at first sight. There was no doubt it was worthy of the award from the beginning.

Honda is facing the challenges [of urban mobility] through fantastic research and development work to find the right solution for the future. I think the Honda e stands for a kind of paradigm shift: we are not just talking about e-mobility, we are talking about new solutions in the digital world and Honda e fits perfectly into this scenery. It connects your home with mobility, it is a real smart product and it goes far beyond our imagination. I don't know any other car that can achieve this at the moment."

From the unique concave black panels and signature front and rear LED light combinations, to the clean lines and flush features that optimise aerodynamic efficiency and refinement, the Honda e reimagines the identity of a small Honda for the next era of urban mobility. Further emphasising the car's exacting design philosophy is a Side Camera Mirror System that replaces conventional side view mirrors - a first in the compact segment.

Makoto Iwaki, the Executive Creative Director for Honda e, added: “Honda e was designed to create a new relationship between people, society and the car, whilst incorporating Honda’s future vision. We will continue to do our best to realise the vision through Honda Design. I’m delighted to receive this prestigious award, and at the same time extremally proud that it’s in the Red Dot Design Museum for the world to appreciate and enjoy. Thank you to everyone, thank you very much.”

The new Honda e is the brand's first production battery electric vehicle for the European market. The model is a key part of Honda's commitment to see all its car model ranges in Europe electrified by 2022.

The CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP, which won the Red Dot 2020 award in the motorcycle category, is the latest two-wheeled machine to carry the legendary Fireblade nameplate. The new 2020 model was developed under the tagline 'Born to Race', with an unwavering focus on circuit performance and a radical new design.

The Red Dot judges put the superbike through its paces over several days to test its performance, in addition to assessing its functionality and design.

Peter Zec commented: "If I'm thinking about Honda, the first thing that comes to mind is motorbikes. The Fireblade deserves the Red Dot because the jury liked it very much - and we have really crazy judges that challenged the bike, including a professional racing bike rider. It's not just good design - it has perfect performance too, which is the main reason why it received the Red Dot."

In its assessment, the judging panel commended the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP for its racing-inspired design, well balanced lines and aerodynamic styling. Judges also praised the fun experience it delivered and outstanding performance when tested. Its minimalist frontal area, aggressively angled side fairings and extended lower fairings – plus a variety of apertures, slits and air-channelling shapes – combine to create a best-in-class drag coefficient. Aerodynamic ‘winglets’ as used on Honda’s MotoGP RC213V racing bike combine eye-catching form with uncompromising function, hugely increasing downforce and stability for ultimate control of the most powerful inline four-cylinder engine Honda has ever made.

Satoshi Kawawa, General Manager, Motorcycle Design Division, added: “The CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP was developed to win races in any category – from club racing to international competition. Its design and styling are led by that philosophy – with every part and every detail designed with speed, performance and aerodynamic efficiency in mind. We’re honoured that it has been recognised with such a prestigious award.”

The annual Red Dot Award: Product Design honours excellence in product design from international businesses. The winning products are chosen by a judging panel comprised of 40 international experts who test, evaluate and discuss each entry. The Red Dot Design museum hosts the world's largest exhibition of contemporary design in the former boiler house of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein, which was once a coal mine complex.

In June, two new special exhibitions, "Milestones in Contemporary Design" and "Design on Stage", present this year's winning products of the Red Dot Award: Product Design, including the Honda e and CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP. All exhibits have extraordinary design qualities and represent the Red Dot winners of 2020.

NEW HONDA JAZZ e:HEV SCORES TOP MARKS UNDER TOUGH NEW EURO NCAP STANDARDS

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/316324/new-honda-jazz-ehev-scores-top-marks-under-tough-new-euro-ncap-standards?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_3982&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Honda Jazz e:HEV achieves five star Euro NCAP rating
New front centre airbag and Honda SENSING active safety technology give the all-new Jazz the most comprehensive safety package in its history
2020 Jazz e:HEV among the first mainstream cars to undergo new test regime; includes assessment of impact on passengers and on other vehicles involved in a collision
Honda's commitment to exceptional occupant safety ensures the Jazz remains one of the safest cars in its class

The new Honda Jazz e:HEV has been awarded the maximum five-star rating in the latest round of Euro NCAP safety tests, which introduce a range of rigorous new assessments. The Jazz has an advanced all-new body structure and includes as standard a comprehensive suite of active safety technologies and driver aids. This combination of carefully integrated active and passive safety features reinforce the model’s reputation as one of Europe’s safest passenger cars.

Available exclusively with a hybrid powertrain, the new Jazz is the first Honda model in Europe to feature a front centre airbag as standard. The airbag is fitted within the back of the driver's seat and expands into the space between the driver and passenger, mitigating the potential for front-seat occupant’s heads to collide directly in the event of a side-on impact.

The new front centre airbag works in combination with two other features in the event of a side on collision. The seat belt pre-tensioners for both driver and passenger work to reduce lateral occupant movement and are further supported by the centre armrest which has increased in height. The impact of this new approach can significantly reduce injury to the head for both near-side and far-side passengers.

This new airbag is one of 10 in the Jazz e:HEV, which also features a rear-seat i-side Airbag System. This unique double-structure airbag, installed in the rear seat pad, activates to protect rear occupants from impacts against the door and C-pillar in the event of side-on collisions. The airbag is also designed in compact size in order not to detract from the unique magic seat function of the Jazz.

The passive safety features are complemented by the industry-leading Honda SENSING active safety and driver assist technologies, which now includes an improved wider-angle camera with higher definition. This replaces the multi-purpose camera and sensor set-up of the previous-generation Jazz, and recognises a broader range of road surface and traffic characteristics. The Honda SENSING suite, which comes as standard on all Honda models, also includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System and Road Departure Mitigation system among a host of other features.

When designing and developing the latest Jazz, Honda engineers also deployed the brand’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure technology that forms the foundation for excellent passive safety performance. ACE technology helps to distribute crash energy evenly throughout the front of the vehicle and also reduces the collision energy transmitted into the other vehicle.

“Safety is of the utmost importance to us and we’re delighted that the car has received the maximum five stars in the new Euro NCAP testing procedure,” commented Takeki Tanaka, Large Project Leader for Honda. “By completely reengineering the Jazz we were able to incorporate advanced new structural technologies and the latest passive safety features to provide exceptional protection from all kinds of accidents. With the addition of an upgraded suite of advanced safety features and driver aids as standard, we have ensured the Jazz remains one of the safest cars in its class. A key new feature in the Jazz is the enhanced panoramic front window visibility and we are proud to have achieved this without compromising on its overall collision safety performance – this is something you won’t see in any other car.”

The next-generation Jazz was launched throughout Europe in Summer 2020 with a refined and responsive hybrid powertrain, to spearhead the brand's commitment to electrify 100% of its European mainstream models by 2022.

HONDA RECEIVES TYPE DESIGNATION FOR LEVEL 3 AUTOMATED DRIVING

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/318975/honda-receives-type-designation-for-level-3-automated-driving?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_3994&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Honda has been awarded type designation for Level 3 automated driving technology in production vehicles in Japan
First automotive manufacturer to receive approval
Honda Legend, due to be launched in Japan by Spring next year, will be the first car with new 'Traffic Jam Pilot' technology
Achievement highlights Honda's dedication to occupant safety and a collision-free society

Honda has gained approval for a Level 3 automated driving system after receiving the required type designation from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). This permits Honda's ‘Traffic Jam Pilot’ automated driving system to be implemented in mass-production vehicles for use at speeds of up to 50 km/h on public highways in Japan. Level 3 automated driving systems take control of the car from the driver under certain conditions*

The latest generation of the Honda Legend, due to launch by Spring next year, will be the first vehicle to deploy Level 3 automated driving capabilities for use on public highways.

When activated by the driver, Honda’s 'Traffic Jam Pilot' technology monitors traffic conditions on the highway and takes control of the car from the driver if it determines that it is safe to do so. It enables the car to follow the vehicle in front and stay in its lane without any input from the driver. The system is required to monitor the highway conditions on a continuous basis and can only be active at speeds up to 50 km/h. When the system determines that it cannot continue to operate safely, a warning is issued, and the driver must take over control of the vehicle immediately. The technology is part of Honda’s suite of safety systems and takes a step further towards Honda’s ambition of a collision-free society by supporting the driver and reducing the number of accidents and collisions caused by human error.

Honda’s leading Level 3 automated driving technology complements the advanced Level 1 and Level 2 driver assist technology, including its industry-leading Honda SENSING suite of active and passive safety systems, already applied to the brand’s vehicles.

The Level 3 type designation in Japan follows recent recognition in Europe of Honda's dedication to providing class leading safety. The all-new Jazz e:HEV was awarded the maximum five-star rating by Euro NCAP in the latest safety results announced on 12 November 2020. It was among the first mainstream cars to undergo the new test regime which introduced a range of stringent assessments. Jazz achieved the top rating thanks to Honda's advanced body structure (ACE), class-first front centre airbag, and a rear-seat i-side airbag system to protect occupants from impacts against the door and C-pillar.

These passive safety features are complemented by industry-leading Honda SENSING technology, which now comes as standard on all Honda models and has recently been upgraded with an improved wider-angle camera with higher definition. The comprehensive Honda SENSING suite includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System and Road Departure Mitigation system, among a host of other features.

The Level 3 type designation allows Honda to shift smoothly between manual and autonomous driving to create a comfortable and natural driving experience, while securing occupant safety.

Honda launches next generation Honda SENSING Elite safety system with Level 3 automated driving features

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/329456/honda-launches-next-generation-honda-sensing-elite-safety-system-with-level-3-automated-driving-feat?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_4248&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Honda launches new Honda SENSING Elite safety system
Fitted to Honda Legend Hybrid EX available for lease in Japan
Honda SENSING Elite features ‘Traffic Jam Pilot’ function, first Level 3 automated technology to be recognized by Japanese authorities
Other features include ‘Hands-off’ and ‘Emergency Stop Assist’

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. will begin lease sales in Japan, on March 5, 2021, of the Honda Legend EX equipped with Honda SENSING Elite.

In its effort to realise a collision-free society based on its global safety slogan, “Safety for Everyone,” Honda has long been at the forefront of the research and development of safety technologies. The introduction of Legend equipped with the Honda SENSING Elite represents the next step forward in the area of advanced safety technology.

Honda SENSING Elite builds on the functionality of Honda SENSING, which is fitted as standard throughout Honda’s European automobile range.

One of the “elite” technologies featured is the “Traffic Jam Pilot” function, an advanced technology qualifying for Level 3 automated driving (conditional automated driving in limited area), for which Honda has received type designation from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT)*1. Traffic Jam Pilot technology enables the automated driving system to drive the vehicle under certain conditions, instead of the driver, such as when the vehicle is in congested traffic on an expressway*2.

For vehicle control, the system determines the position of the vehicle and road conditions using data from the 3-dimensional high-definition maps and the global navigation satellite system (GNSS*3), detecting the vehicle’s 360-degree surroundings using several external sensors. At the same time, the system tracks the conditions of the driver using the monitoring camera mounted inside the vehicle. Based on such a wide range of information, the main ECU makes proper recognitions, predictions and decisions and applies a high-level control to acceleration, braking and steering inputs to assist the driver to achieve high-quality and smooth driving.

Placing the highest priority on safety and reliability, the system development employed simulations where a total of approximately 10 million pattens of possible real-world situations were simulated, and several demonstration tests were conducted while driving test vehicles on expressways for a total of approximately 1.3 million kilometers (800,000 miles). Moreover, the system incorporates redundant system design to ensure safety and reliability in the event of a problem with any of the devices.

Exterior equipment designed exclusively for this all-new Legend model includes blue accessory lights and a dedicated aluminium wheel. Several sensors are embedded to make them less noticeable so that an appearance befitting a flagship sedan are further enhanced while discreetly calling out the fact that it is a vehicle equipped with automated driving equipment.

Interior equipment exclusive to this model includes Honda SENSING Elite indicator lights which feature carefully selected respective positions, sizes, colours, brightness and other details, as well as the 12.3-inch full-LCD graphic meter. This equipment was adopted to ensure intuitive understanding of operation status, current situation, and any requests to transfer back control to the driver.

Key features of Honda SENSING Elite

‘Hands-off’ Functionality

While driving with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow and Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) activated, when certain conditions are satisfied on an expressway, the system will assist the driving operations even while the driver has their hands off the steering wheel.

    Adaptive in Lane Driving:

The system assists the driving and in following a car in front within a lane. The system drives the vehicle along the middle of the lane while maintaining the pre-set vehicle speed. When there is a car in front, the system assists in following while maintaining a proper following distance.

Active Lane Change Assist with Hands-off Function

While driving using the Adaptive in Lane Driving, when the driver confirms safe surroundings and puts on the turn signal, the system assists acceleration/deceleration and steering for the lane change.

Active Lane Change with Hands-off Function

While driving using the Adaptive in Lane Driving, when the driver switches on the Active Lane Change with Hands-off Function, the system assesses the situation and assists the lane change and/or passing of the other vehicle under certain conditions. When the system detects a car in front being driven at low speed, the system notifies the driver and then assists the passing and returning to the original lane.

Traffic Jam Pilot

While driving using the Adaptive in Lane Driving, when the vehicle gets caught in traffic congestion under certain conditions, the system takes control of acceleration, braking and steering while monitoring the vehicle’s surroundings on behalf of the driver. The system drives, stops, and resumes driving within the same lane while maintaining a proper following distance in accordance with the speed of the vehicle in front. While the vehicle is under the control of the system, the driver can watch television/DVD on the navigation screen or operate the navigation system to search for a destination address, which helps mitigate driver fatigue and stress while driving in a traffic jam.

    Emergency Stop Assist:

When the driver continues to be unresponsive to the system’s requests for a handover (the transfer of control back to the driver), the system assists deceleration and stopping of the vehicle by making lane change(s) to the outermost lane or the shoulder of the road. To be more specific, in case the driver does not respond to the system’s handover requests as the Traffic Jam Pilot/Hands-off Function will be disengaged, the system further urges the driver to respond to the handover request using visual, auditory and tactile alerts including escalated alarm sounds and vibration on the driver’s seatbelt. If the driver continues to be unresponsive, the system will assist deceleration and stopping of the vehicle while alerting other vehicles around using hazard lights and the horn. When there is a road shoulder, the system assists deceleration and lane changes until the vehicle reaches the shoulder of the road for a safe stop. *4

Human-Machine Interface (HMI)

The interface enables the driver to instantaneously recognize operating status of the system, the driving situation and the handover requests issued by the system. Honda SENSING Elite indicator lights are positioned on the steering wheel, the top part of the navigation screen and glovebox. When the Hands-off Function is activated, the indicator light on the steering wheel illuminates, and when Traffic Jam Pilot is activated other indicator lights also come on with a blue light. When the system requests the handover, all indicator lights change their color to orange and blink to send an easy-to-understand message to the driver. The large 12.3-inch, full-LCD meter also displays the operating status of the system, driving situation and the handover requests in a simple yet expressive manner.

Limited lease sales of the Honda Legend Hybrid EX commence in Japan from 5 March.

*1  Reception of the type designation was announced on November 11. 2020.

Please refer to the press release: https://global.honda/newsroom/news/2020/4201111eng.html

*2  There is a limit to the capabilities (e.g. recognition capability and control capability) of individual functions of Honda SENSING Elite. Please do not overestimate the capabilities of each Honda SENSING Elite function and drive safely while paying constant attention to your surroundings. Please remain in condition where you can respond to the handover request issued by the system, and immediately resume driving upon the handover request.

*3  GNSS stands for Global Navigation Satellite System, a collective name for satellite positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) systems.

*4  Depending on the situation, the system may stop the vehicle without making lane change(s).

HONDA MOTOR EUROPE INTRODUCES NEW PREMIUM CABIN AIR FILTER WHICH EFFECTIVELY CONTRIBUTES TO REDUCING INFECTION RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE SARS-COV-2 VIRUS

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/330500/honda-motor-europe-introduces-new-premium-cabin-air-filter-which-effectively-contributes-to-reducing?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_4287&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Honda premium cabin air filter reliably captures viral aerosols with their unique progressive multi-layer design and prevent the shedding of viable viruses
New filter feature a four-layer filtration system for maximum protection
Filter can trap more than 90 percent of viral aerosols and an innovative second step inactivates almost 100 percent of the captured viral load via a bio-functional layer impregnated with fruit extract

Honda is now offering a new premium cabin air filter which is highly effective at capturing a wide range of harmful germs, allergens and even viruses related to significant health problems, including infection risks associated with the SARS COV-2 virus.

The Honda premium cabin air filter was developed in cooperation with Freudenberg and is offered as a new Honda genuine spare part, as an alternative to the standard Honda pollen filter. This new premium cabin air filter provides active protection by significantly reducing the concentration of viral aerosols. This is achieved by a unique multi-layer design that effectively filters, captures and suppresses noxious environmental gases as well as inorganic and biological particles and aerosols.

Eiichi Hino, President Honda Access Europe NV, said “As society is now more aware than even of the impact of germs and viruses such as COVID-19, we expect the demand for protective solutions to increase rapidly. This premium cabin air filter is a great example of Honda working together rapidly with its suppliers to deliver a product of real benefit that improves the health and safety of driver and occupants.”

Honda premium cabin air filter in action – how it works

To lower the infection risk in the vehicle cabin, it is generally recommended to increase the fresh air supply to reduce the concentration of aerosols.. In recirculation mode, removing viruses from the air largely depends on the efficiency of the filtration system and the air exchange rate.

The first two microfibre layers of the Honda premium cabin air filter capture most ultrafine aerosols, dust and pollen while the third layer, made of activated carbon, is responsible for the adsorption of harmful pollution such as particulates and acid gases. An innovative fourth bio-functional layer coated with the active substance of fruit extract then effectively inactivates captured viral aerosols and prevents them from being released back into the cabin air. This has been conclusively proved by a comprehensive series of tests conducted in collaboration with the Austrian Research Institute OFI.

Coronaviruses are spread in droplets produced when those affected sneeze, cough or breathe and can remain infectious on surfaces for hours or even days. Wind disturbances, temperature changes and humidity can all cause that these particles become airborne again, at which point they can be picked up by the filter.

The fine particle filtration layers provide improved protection against virus transmission in comparison to standard filters. They demonstrably separate not only droplets (> 5 μm), but also critical viral aerosols (droplet nuclei significantly below 5 μm). The new Honda premium cabin air filter can trap more than 90 percent of viral aerosols. In addition, an innovative second step inactivates almost 100 percent of the captured viral load via a bio-functional layer impregnated with the active substance of fruit extract.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is just the latest of an unbroken line of viruses stretching back through human history that impact on human health. In terms of mitigating risk while travelling in motor vehicles, the advanced Honda premium cabin air filter offers one of the best protections available in the market.

Honda dealerships can supply and fit this new filter, which is available for all recent Honda models.

Editors Notes:

LEGAL CONFORMITY

The bio-functional layer in the Honda premium cabin air filters is able to inactivate harmful organisms. Unlike traditional chemical biocides, many of which are already banned for use in vehicles or labeled “to be substituted”, the active substance of fruit extract used conforms to the latest European Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR, Regulation (EU) 528/2012).

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MINIMIZING RISK INSIDE THE VEHICLE CABIN

Increased fresh air supply is an efficient way to protect against viruses inside vehicles. This maximizes the dilution of airborne aerosols.
The efficiency of the filter elements plays a vital role in filtering out environmental contaminants, harmful substances and pathogenic aerosols. In recirculation mode, the viral air-cleaning performance depends heavily on the viral filtration efficiency of the filtration system and the air exchange rate.
Innovative filter elements with surface disinfection properties efficiently prevent viral bio-burden from being released into the air again while ensuring the highest level of protection of human health and the environment.
Filter service: Especially under current conditions, the cabin air filter should be changed more frequently than usual to maintain optimum protection.

In accordance with the stipulations of the BPR, where they are used, end-consumers must be informed that the Honda premium cabin air filters developed in cooperation with Freudenberg are a “treated article” with biocidal properties.

Honda premium cabin air filter developed in cooperation with Freudenberg with antiviral surface disinfection properties by means of a functional filter layer based on fruit extract (active ingredient Citric Acid CAS-Nr. 77-92-9 and / or 5949-29-1) for use in air handling / air conditioning system. Safe bacteriostatic and fungistatic surface disinfection properties against a multitude of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeast and fungi as well as proven viral surface disinfection properties (excellent antiviral efficacy for influenza virus H1N1 (Swine Flu) and corona virus HCoV 229E according to ISO 18184:2019) to prevent virus shedding / viral re-aerosolization. Current conditions make it too dangerous to test the filter against SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 disease, but Freudenberg expects that it will achieve the same 99.9 per cent effectiveness.

ALL-NEW HR-V e:HEV: A DEEPER LOOK INTO THE DESIGN CONCEPT

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/330678/all-new-hr-v-ehev-a-deeper-look-into-the-design-concept?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_4310&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

All-new HR-V incorporates Honda's seamless, clean design philosophy with strong SUV stance
Honda’s unique centre fuel tank layout is maintained as basis of flexible, spacious cabin
Further improvements maximise interior space and comfort, despite its compact dimensions
Design embodies key concepts of function and desirable beauty, enhancing its role in supporting everyday life

The next generation hybrid-only HR-V e:HEV is the culmination of an extensive reassessment of modern consumer attitudes. By evaluating how today’s active, connected population identifies and selects high value products, Honda approached its development not only as an all-new compact SUV, but as a consumer product that must appeal through desirability, functionality and usability.

Honda’s research found that modern consumers choose products not only on the basis of competent performance or appealing aesthetics but how it integrates with their lives and whether the product fulfils their exact requirements. Following this lead, the team adopted the mantra “Amp up your life”, focusing on enabling active lifestyles throughout every stage of the new HR-V’s development. The objective was to widen the possibilities of what customers can do with the car to support and ‘amplify’ their everyday lives.

The result is a contemporary coupe-SUV body that appeals through the simplicity of its design, while its exceptionally spacious and versatile interior is more user-oriented and comfortable to sit in than ever. The all-new HR-V also achieves a desirable yet rare combination of premium SUV styling and exceptional space efficiency. It successfully extends the Honda brand's reputation for quality, functionality and practicality, and presents it with an individual and fun style, all within a compact package.

Honda began by focusing on its 'Man-Maximum, Machine-Minimum' (M/M) development principle, which is based on the belief that the purpose of technology and design is to serve the needs of the driver and passengers.

The efficient packaging of powertrain components in an updated version of Honda's global small platform and the brand's clever centre tank layout play key roles in enhancing cabin space and enabling four adults to be accommodated in maximum comfort. As well as interior space, advanced design and technology optimises airiness, comfort, ergonomics and versatility.

Honda Large Project Leader, Kojiro Okabe said: “When developing the HR-V we carried out group discussions with people of varying backgrounds, from many fields of expertise, and across all ages and genders. Building the car from scratch, the HR-V adds elements which bring fun and joy to all passengers. We aimed to augment, not repress people’s opinions or individuality and create a car that enabled all people to enjoy their lifestyles.”

Exterior design focus

The coupe-SUV aesthetic of the new HR-V creates a sense of energetic spirit and dynamism. Its horizontal and forward-orientated character lines and smooth surfaces reflect the clean simplicity of other recent new Honda models, with exterior design features incorporated into the body shape. For example, the headlights and front grille blend into the front quarter panels and seamlessly integrate with the unique body-coloured upper grille.

To create a contemporary, noiseless aesthetic, the designers incorporated a crisp horizontal shoulder line that runs from the headlights to the rear light cluster. At the rear, the desire to achieve a combination of utility and aesthetics is evident in the simple, elegant tailgate design, which neatly integrates the tailgate door handle within the three-dimensional rear panel. The tailgate aperture, lower tailgate edge and low, flat cargo floor all work in unison to provide easy loading access, despite the coupe-inspired roofline.

In pursuit of a more elegant appearance and to ensure that the exterior looks beautiful, even up close, the designers paid great attention to the finest details. For example, the cut lines are aligned and minimised as much as possible to avoid shadows, and have been removed entirely on the door handles. This attention to detail is also apparent where the two licence plate lights, tailgate handle and rear camera are all simply integrated into one unit. This contributes to the clean overall styling and is reflective of other recent Honda models, where the desire for simplicity in detail is resulting in more elegant design.

Creating a sense of space

Inside the new HR-V, every design element is dedicated to achieving a sense of generous spaciousness and airiness that connects occupants to the outside world. This begins with windows that are designed to admit as much light as possible, with the excellent outward visibility further aided by the horizontally oriented instrumental panel and flat line of the bonnet for noiseless visibility leading to additional comfort while driving.

The sense of airiness is amplified by unique L-shaped vents positioned in the top corners of the dashboard. These are designed to deliver the restorative effects of a breeze while addressing shortcomings of traditional vent configurations, where passengers often feel uncomfortable with air flowing directly onto them. The system subtly directs a stream of air along the side windows and the front windshield to the roof, creating a vortex beside and above occupants. The effect of these new vents creates a comfortable internal environment for all.

A fundamental consideration for interior comfort was the optimal positioning of interior controls. The uncluttered, simple-to-use layout adds to the sense of calm, with the audio and ventilation controls and instrument panel positioned as close as possible to the driver's field of vision, with instantly recognisable controls allowing for safe and intuitive operation.

The rear seats have been given an additional recline compared to the previous generation HR-Vincreasing passenger comfort and space. Crucially, although overall vehicle dimensions are similar to the previous model, the new HR-V offers greater leg room and shoulder space, for an enhanced feeling of spaciousness and comfort. To maintain clever packaging and a low boot floor height, Honda engineers carefully configured the versatility of the fully flat cargo space and seat arrangement to enable the easy loading of a wide variety of luggage, bicycles and other sports and lifestyle-related equipment.

Honda Large Project Leader, Kojiro Okabe, added: "We designed the all-new hybrid HR-V to reflect the exacting values and needs of modern consumers and appeal to a new generation of car owners. They demand purpose and innovation from the products they interact with. By cleverly applying Honda's latest technologies and design ethos, we have created a car that will provide the spaciousness, connectivity, reliability and versatility required to fully support and enhance their everyday lives."

The all-new HR-V e:HEV will be available in Europe in late 2021. Customers can register their interest now on the Honda website: https://www.honda.co.uk/cars/new/hr-v-hybrid/hr-v-register-interest/register-interest.html

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/330940/honda-wins-red-dot-awards-2021-for-new-jazz-ehev-jazz-crosstar-ehev-and-forza-750?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_4338&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

New Jazz and Jazz Crosstar models recognised for outstanding balance of functionality, design and safety
Forza 750 luxury scooter combines elegant design lines with sporty performance and outstanding versatility
Prestigious international Red Dot Design Awards celebrate excellence in product, brand and communication design
Latest award follows 2020 Red Dot Award wins for CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP and 'Best of the Best' for Honda e

Honda's new hybrid-only Jazz and Jazz Crosstar models and the Forza 750 scooter have been awarded highly coveted Red Dot Awards 2021 in the ‘Product Design’ category. These internationally renowned accolades are only bestowed upon the highest quality products that excel in product, brand and communication design.

The annual Red Dot awards are decided by a panel of 50 international experts who test, evaluate and discuss each entry to spotlight outstanding design and innovation. The judging criteria are reappraised and adapted each year to reflect the latest technical, social, economic and ecological requirements.

“We have had another successful year, receiving several awards in the Product Design category of the globally-recognised Red Dot design awards,” said Toshinobu Minami, Chief Operating Officer, Design Center, Honda R&D Co. Ltd.,

“Since our establishment, we at Honda have always aimed to reflect the idea of ‘making customers’ daily lives more enjoyable’ in our product design, and we believe that receiving these awards is a recognition of our success in doing this. We will continue to follow this unchanging principle, thinking ‘outside the box’ to design products that provide ‘surprise and excitement’ to customers’ lives.”

The Jazz e:HEV and Jazz Crosstar e:HEV are aligned with Honda’s commitment to electrify 100% of its European models by 2022. The Jazz was designed to encapsulate Honda’s ‘Yoo no bi’ philosophy, which recognises the beauty that exists in everyday items honed over time to make them even more beautiful and ergonomically satisfying to use. The Jazz design also employs Honda’s 'Man-Maximum, Machine-Minimum' (M/M) development principle, which is based on the belief that the purpose of technology and design is to serve the needs of the driver and passengers. The result is a car that combines functionality and usability, expressed through innovative features like Magic Seats, yet maintains a sleek and modern appearance.

The rugged Crosstar variant was created to broaden the appeal of the model, presenting a more SUV-style proposition, oriented toward those with active lifestyles. Increased presence comes from a bold front grille design, substantial black trim and stylish side sills and roof rails. The Crosstar-specific alloy wheels, which widen towards the rim, create an increased sense of stability and enhance the robust overall visual effect.

Launched in the Autumn of 2020, the brand-new Honda Forza 750 crowns the celebrated Forza range of luxury scooters, which combine ‘GT’ levels of comfort and road presence with sporty, agile performance in a supremely stylish, premium package. The new flagship Forza is no exception, with classy, roomy styling that offers ample leg room and wind protection for comfortable high-speed cruising, coupled with excellent aerodynamics thanks to a sleek front-end design and slim rear section. It is also designed for easy use around town, with stable handling and effortless acceleration from its torquey, fuel-efficient 745cc twin-cylinder engine.

The classically Forza feature-rich spec sheet includes multiple riding modes, Honda Selectable Torque Control, Honda’s unique-in-motorcycling Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), full LED lighting and Honda Smartphone Voice Control. The low 790mm seat height, 22 litres of under-seat luggage space - enough to accommodate a full-face helmet - and USB-C charger socket enhance the everyday usability.

These latest honours follows other recent successes for Honda in the Red Dot awards, highlighting Honda's commitment to creating beautiful products that are designed without compromise. In 2020, Honda e received the top award, ‘Best of the Best’, and was recognised alongside the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP superbike – which was the first Honda motorcycle to win a Red Dot award. This follows previous successes, including the Honda S2000 in 2001, Civic in 2006, and the European Accord Tourer in 2008.
