http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/business/2014/05/04/honda-is-low-key-in-moves-of-personnel.html

Honda is low-key in moves of personnel

Toyota announced last week that it is moving its North American headquarters to Texas.

The shift, which made headlines across the country, might seem similar to what Honda did last year, much more quietly, when it moved top managers to Ohio.

But a closer look shows the two situations have little in common.

Toyota’s pending move to Plano, Texas, includes about 4,000 employees and the declaration of the new offices as a headquarters.

That is a larger undertaking in almost every way compared with what Honda announced in February 2013.

Honda said it was moving up to 50 top managers and support staff to Marysville. This included Tetsuo Iwamura, then the top sales executive, who was moving to Ohio in a new role that would oversee the top managers in all divisions.

Since then, Iwamura has moved on to a different job within the company. His replacement as the top executive in North America, Takuji Yamada, has a residence in California and is not officially based at any single Honda office, the company has said.

In the 14 months since the announcement, only about a dozen Honda employees have moved from California and other locations to Ohio.

“This is still evolving,” said Honda spokesman Ron Lietzke. “We anticipated at the time that it would be fewer than 50, and it has been.”

For decades, the three largest Japanese automakers — Honda, Nissan and Toyota — had major offices in southern California. Even as they opened manufacturing plants elsewhere in the country, the companies kept a major presence in California.

This began to change in 2005 when Nissan said it was going to build a North American headquarters near Nashville, Tenn., and relocate more than 1,000 employees from California.

Toyota’s move is a similar, though much larger, version of what Nissan did. Both of the companies received, or stand to receive, state and local aid packages connected to the relocations.

Honda is choosing a different path, without attention-getting announcements.

And that’s exactly what central Ohio economic-development leaders say they have come to expect and appreciate from the automaker.

“What you’re seeing is, Honda is quietly moving and growing its presence in central Ohio,” said Alex Fischer, president and CEO of the Columbus Partnership, a coalition of the region’s major employers; Honda is a member of the partnership.

“Like you’ve seen it for 30 years, Honda does it with a low-key style and without attempts to hold states and communities hostage.

“They are the model corporate citizen from an economic-development standpoint. I’m not sure what more we could ask them to do,” he said.

Fischer has some experience dealing with automaker relocations. He was a top adviser to Tennessee’s governor when that state negotiated Nissan’s move.

Nissan and Toyota both declared their new offices as North American headquarters. If Honda did that in central Ohio, it would be a highlight for elected officials and economic-development leaders.

But, the difference would be largely semantic, some of those same leaders say. In many ways, central Ohio is already the headquarters, even if Honda doesn’t describe it that way.

The company has 14,200 employees in Ohio, most of them at plants in Marysville, East Liberty, Anna and Russells Point. Its North American research and development office is based in Raymond.

When Honda made its announcement last year about moving its management, the company’s aim was to get its top managers to communicate more effectively and have more decision-making take place in North America as opposed to at the world headquarters in Japan. That plan and those goals remain in effect, Lietzke said.

At the same time, Honda intends to maintain its sales and marketing office in Torrance, Calif. That is the office where Iwamura was based before he relocated to Marysville.

Torrance, which is in the Los Angeles metro area, is also home of the office Toyota is leaving for Texas.

Toyota’s announcement has stung California leaders, who are losing a major employer. It is also a major disruption to the employees, many of whom probably will decide not to make the move, said Ed Kim, an analyst for AutoPacific in Tustin, Calif.

If employees choose not to move, it would be an opportunity for Toyota to reduce its payroll without resorting to layoffs, he said. Toyota, like Honda, prides itself in never laying off employees.

“It helps them readjust the structure of their ranks,” Kim said. “It allows them to thin out the middle management.”

As for Honda, he thinks last year’s announcement might end up being a step toward a larger move to Ohio at some point, but nothing more than that.

Honda recalling 25k Odyssey minivans over side curtain airbags

Honda's refreshed 2014 Odyssey (now with 100-percent more vacuum power!) launched last year, but is now being called back for issues related to the side curtain airbags. According to Honda, 24,889 Odyssey minivans are affected by an issue that may cause the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) warning light to illuminate or, even worse, cause the side airbags to not deploy in a crash.

What went wrong, exactly? We'll let Honda explain:

During assembly of the electrical coupler for the side curtain airbag on the passenger's side of the vehicle, it is possible that the shorting terminal, which is used to prevent deployment of the airbag before it is assembled into the vehicle, may have been damaged. A damaged shorting terminal may illuminate the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) indicator as well as prevent the side curtain airbag from deploying during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Honda dealers will replace the shorting computer, free of charge. Owners will be notified by mail after May 16. For the full details, scroll down for Honda's press blast.

Honda India readies MPV entry to rival Toyota, Suzuki

BANGALORE: Honda Cars India, the fifth largest passenger vehicle manufacturer in India, will enter India's multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) segment in the first quarter of the current fiscal with the launch of a diesel and petrol variant of its seven-seater Mobilio.
This will be followed by the re-launch of the Japanese car marker's premium hatchback Jazz, expected in the October to December quarter coinciding with the year-end festive season.

With Mobilio, Honda will be pitted against fellow Japanese rivals — Toyota's Innova and Maruti Suzuki's Ertiga. The two vehicles have a combined 80% market share. The MPV market in India sees sales of around 10,000 units per month. It also includes Mahindra's Xylo, General Motor's Chevrolet Enjoy and Nissan's Evalia.

"This year also we will surely have a good double digit growth, but part of it will depend on the volumes of the Mobilio, which in turn depends on its pricing. We are still working on the pricing," said Honda's senior VP (marketing and sales) Jnaneswar Sen.

In the last fiscal, while the Indian auto industry was hit by low consumer sentiment, Honda delivered an 83% growth in sales to 1.34 lakh vehicles, overtaking Toyota's sales in India. The growth was driven by the sales of its entry-level sedan Honda Amaze and the new Honda City, which continues to be the company's biggest sales grosser. In fiscal 2013, Honda volumes grew 37%.

Consumer sentiment has not been positive for the past couple of years, but Sen is optimistic that the passenger vehicle market will do better this year.

Honda has set a target of touching 3 lakh units in sales by 2017. In the same time, its parent Honda Motor Co has set a target to sell 6 million cars across the world, with India representing 5% of the global sales. At present Honda India contributes 3% of Honda Motor's global sales.

American Honda Sales Rise 1.1 Percent in April

- CR-V sets new April record as Honda core models anchor on-going retail sales success

- Acura light trucks set April record, continue unprecedented growth in 2014

TORRANCE, Calif., May 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported April 2014 Honda and Acura vehicle sales of 132,456 units—an overall increase of 1.1 percent (-2.8 percent based on the Daily Selling Rate, or DSR*) compared to April 2013. The Honda Division also saw in increase of 1.1 percent with April sales of 118,334. Acura division gained 1.6 percent on April sales of 14,122, with light trucks increasing 35.9 percent for the month on sales of 9,536 units. Year to date American Honda sales reached 457,810.

Honda

In the first four months of 2014, Honda continued its retail sales momentum despite an environment punctuated by a handful of companies applying heavy incentives and a significant reliance on fleet sales. Honda enjoyed steady growth in April with CR-V setting a new sales record, and Accord and Civic enjoying gains.

CR-V recorded sales of 28,485, up 7.4 percent for a new April record
Accord posted April sales of 34,124, an increase of 1.7 percent
Civic was up 4.4 percent to 27,611 units vs. April 2013

"After a few truly chilling winter months, it's great to see the warmer spring weather begin to liberate our customers and spark record sales of CR-V and solid sales results across the lineup," said Jeff Conrad, Honda division senior vice president and general manager. "More than any other automaker our success is based on one customer at a time going down to their Honda dealer to purchase a new vehicle, and in April, we see the power of our retail sales strategy at work."

Acura

Acura light trucks continue to sell well above last year's pace, led by the hot-selling MDX and RDX. However, vehicle supply is becoming a factor as Acura begins winding down production of TSX and TL models in preparation for the new TLX models, which are scheduled to hit the ground later this year.

Acura division sales increased 1.6 percent vs. 2013 with 14,122 units sold in April
Acura trucks set a new April sales record with an increase of 35.9 percent on sales of 9,536
MDX posted another major increase with sales up 80 percent in April
RDX sales increased for an unprecedented 24th month in a row, climbing 6.3 percent

"With RDX posting two solid years of continuous growth and MDX sustaining its hot sales pace, our Acura SUVs continue to set the standard in the luxury light truck segment," said Mike Accavitti, Acura division senior vice president and general manager. "In a few short months, we will unleash the all-new 2015 Acura TLX to reestablish Acura's reputation for thrilling luxury performance sedans and establish the Acura brand as a force to be reckoned with in the luxury segment."

*The daily selling rate (DSR) is calculated with 26 days for April 2014 and 25 days for April 2013. Year-to-date, the DSR is calculated with 101 days for 2014 and 101 days for 2013. All other percentages in release are unadjusted; see table for adjusted DSR figures.

ASEAN NCAP Phase III: Honda CR-V, Proton Preve, Toyota Corolla Altis, Chevrolet Colorado get five stars

The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) has announced results for the third and final phase of the ASEAN New Car Assessment Programme (ASEAN NCAP) at the Philea Resort and Spa in Melaka. The announcement of Phase III results was also made at the 2014 Global NCAP Annual Forum today in Melbourne.

A total of 11 cars, with two models in both lowest and premium versions, were evaluated. As with the previous phases, test vehicles were subjected to an offset frontal collision test at a closing speed of 64 km/h.

New to this phase is a UN R95 side collision test with a mobile deformable barrier striking the car at 50 km/h, while child occupant protection results now feature a star rating system, rather than the previous percentage-based system. The results are as follows:

    Honda CR-V 2.0 V built 2013, MY 2014 – Adult: 5 stars (4 stars, no VSC), Child: 4 stars, Side: Pass, Airbags: 2
    Proton Preve 1.6 IAFM+ built 2013, MY 2013 – Adult: 5 stars, Child: 3 stars, Side: Pass, Airbags: 6
Toyota Corolla Altis 2.0 V with Safety Package built 2013, MY 2014 – Adult: 5 stars, Child: 4 stars, Side: Pass, Airbags: 7
Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab built 2014, MY 2014 – Adult: 5 stars (4 stars, no ESP), Child: 3 stars, Side: Pass, Airbags: 2
Volkswagen Polo Sedan 1.6 built 2013, MY 2013 - Adult: 4 stars, Child: 4 stars, Side: Pass, Airbags: 4

    Peugeot 208 1.6 VTi AT 5-door built 2013, MY 2013 - Adult: 4 stars, Child: 4 stars, Side: Pass, Airbags: 6
Kia Picanto 1.25 MT built 2013, MY 2013 - Adult: 4 stars, Child: 4 stars, Side: Pass, Airbags: 6
Chevrolet Sonic 1.4 built 2013, MY 2014 - Adult: 4 stars, Child: 4 stars, Side: Pass, Airbags: 2
Isuzu D-Max Crew Cab 4×4 MT built 2014, MY 2015 - Adult: 4 stars, Child: 4 stars, Side: Pass, Airbags: 2
Kia Picanto 1.25 MT (no airbags) built 2013, MY 2013 - Adult: 0 stars, Child: 1 stars, Side: Not tested, Airbags: 0

‘MY’ denotes the safety package introduction year

The Proton Preve extends its five-star adult rating to the Suprima S, while the Volkswagen Polo Sedan extends its four-star adult rating to the Polo hatch. For the Honda CR-V and Chevrolet Colorado, variants without ESC are rated four stars for adults.

The Honda CR-V tested was an LHD car built in Thailand for the Philippine market. The results for the Toyota Corolla Altis 2.0 (available only for the Malaysian market) was adopted from ANCAP’s test at JARI in Tsukuba, Japan. This particular variant is built in Thailand for Australia and Malaysia.

The Volkswagen Polo Sedan, Peugeot 208, six-airbag Kia Picanto and Proton Preve tested were built in Malaysia; all the others were built in Thailand. The three test locations were MIROS PC3 in Melaka, Malaysia, Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI) in Tsukuba, Japan and KATRI in South Korea.

To be eligible for a five-star rating, a vehicle must have at least two airbags, electronic stability control and a seat belt reminder, or it will only qualify for a maximum of four stars.

Honda S660 Concept headed for production?

A report coming out of Japan indicates the Honda S660 concept that debuted at last year's edition of the Tokyo Motor Show has been given the green light for production.

The roadster will be built by Yachigo Industry Company, a small, Honda-affiliated supplier that has assembled many of the automaker's kei cars over the past couple of decades. Production is scheduled to kick off later this year, and the roadster will land in Honda showrooms across Japan in early 2015.

The S660 is an evolution of the all-electric EV-STER concept that Honda presented at the 2011 edition of the Tokyo show but it is powered by a gas-burning 660cc three-cylinder turbocharged engine borrowed from the firm's kei car parts bin. The mill sends 64 horsepower to the roadster's front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT), though rumors indicate it could get a small power boost from an electric motor.

Visually, the S660's overall shape is reminiscent of the Beat (a small convertible built in the early 1990s) but its front end borrows a couple of styling cues from the Acura NSX supercar that is currently being developed at Honda's research and development center in Ohio. The production version of the two-seater will lose the concept's futuristic cockpit and gain a simple, minimalist dashboard with a digital instrument cluster.

The S660 could be presented at this year's edition of the Tokyo show and go on sale shortly after. It won't be sold outside of its home country with a three-cylinder in the engine bay but the automaker might shoehorn a larger four-cylinder unit and distribute the roadster in select countries around the world.

Hyundai, Honda execs prepared for more scrutiny on safety

http://www.autonews.com/article/20140508/OEM11/140509815/hyundai-honda-execs-prepared-for-more-scrutiny-on-safety

WASHINGTON -- General Motors’ ignition switch controversy inevitably will lead to greater regulatory scrutiny of auto safety defects, top executives from Honda and Hyundai say.

Dave Zuchowski, CEO of Hyundai Motor America, said Hyundai would welcome new steps to identify and fix safety problems faster, while John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., expressed concerns about the wholesale release of raw safety data.

“Everybody wants to move so quickly because they don’t want to be viewed as not doing anything about it,” Mendel said during a panel discussion at the American International Automobile Dealers Association’s industry summit here on Thursday. “And unfortunately, usually, when you react without good thought, you get not the best outcome.”

Committees in the U.S. House and Senate have opened investigations into GM’s slow response to the faulty ignition switches used in vehicles such as the Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Ion. The defects have been linked to 13 deaths and ultimately led to the recall of 2.6 million vehicles.

In March, Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., and Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., introduced a bill that would expand the public’s access to the early-warning reports that automakers submit to U.S. safety regulators after crashes involving their vehicles. They argue that making the information available to the public, including safety advocates and plaintiffs’ attorneys, could unearth safety risks that would not otherwise be addressed.

Automakers review crash records to determine which crashes merit an early-warning report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Critics of Markey and Blumenthal’s proposal have warned that automakers may submit less information to NHTSA if they know it will become public.

Still, Zuchowski said, the industry should expect the GM crisis to lead to extra safety reporting requirements and oversight of automakers, just as the TREAD Act in 2000 followed the Ford-Firestone crisis.

“What’s at stake here is the safety of the consumers driving our products, and it’s sort of tough to argue against that,” Zuchowski said. “At the end of the day, we know it’s coming, and we actually welcome it because what we don’t want to happen is what happened with General Motors where there’s fatalities involved.”

Spy Shots: new Honda Odyssey is Ready for the China car market

Spy Shots of the new Honda Oyssey MPV, ready for its launch on the China car market in August. The new Honda Odyssey was launched on the Japanese market in November last year, but China still has to do with the old one. The Odyssey is one of the most popular MPV’s on the Chinese auto market so the new one has to be good, and it certainly looks the business with a giant grille with four heavily chromed bars.

The current China-made Honda Odyssey, manufactured by the Guangzhou-Honda joint venture. Price starts at 229.800 yuan and ends at 286.800 yuan. Lone engine is a 2.4 liter four-cylinder petrol with 181hp, mated to a 5-speed automatic.

The engine will continue unchanged in the new Odyssey but the 5-speed automatic will be replaced by a new 7-speed CVT. Price will be about the same.

2014 Honda Accord EX-L V-6 - Summer Update

"It’s a sensible sedan turned into a personal luxury car, and this just seems wrong to me."

The Honda Accord was named to our All-Stars roster of the ten best cars you can buy in America. In celebration of the All-Stars award, we took our ten winners on a multi-state road trip from Detroit to New Orleans. Our red Four Seasons coupe represented the Accord, and it acquitted itself well despite running with some heady company.

The All-Stars road trip was the first opportunity that our West Coast editor, Michael Jordan, had to spend time with our Accord. Predictably, his views represent a particular California sensibility: “Google and Tesla have made a lot of headlines with their efforts to build a new kind of car that incorporates all the modern thinking of Silicon Valley, something that looks ahead to simple, well-ordered transportation,” he said. “Well, Google and Tesla are just kidding themselves, because the Honda Accord already embraces the future. It’s affordable, clean, and modern, and even better, it’s here today.”

“When you drive a Honda Accord, it’s like shaking hands with Bill Hewlett and David Packard, who did the whole Silicon Valley thing long, long before Google and Tesla, and did it better too.”

Like other staffers, though, Jordan found our V-6/manual coupe to be “the wrong version of the right car.”

“It’s a sensible sedan turned into a personal luxury car, and this just seems wrong to me,” he said. “Of course, I have to admit that this has always been the classic formula for a personal luxury car, so I should probably just get over it. Fortunately, the Accord coupe V-6 is pretty good at being a Ford Thunderbird. It looks decent, proves genuinely fast, and follows a winding road with some enthusiasm -- until the brakes predictably start smoking.”

That will happen when you send a sensible sedan -- or a personal luxury car -- chasing after the likes of a Porsche Cayman, a Jaguar F-type, or an Audi RS7. Like we said, pretty heady company.

Test Drive: 2015 Honda Fit fits many needs

Honda's Fit small car was a bull's eye from the start in 2006. And it aged very gracefully.

We drove one in 2012 for a Cars.com/USA TODAY/MotorWeek comparison, and it swept the field despite its age. Good endorsement of the "get it right and leave it alone" approach.

Still, Test Drive is delighted to report that the completely redesigned car is a better Fit.

It's an inch shorter, but has a longer wheelbase, is marginally wider and the unusual center-mounted, underfloor gas tank is reshaped for a better fit. The rear suspension was modified to intrude less into the back seat area.

The 2015 Fit, Honda says, has a remarkable 4.8 inches more rear legroom — about 39 inches, or nearly as much as most cars' front seats. And the back seat now slides further, so you can open more cargo space and still leave enough legroom.

The rear cushions continue to fold up against the backrest to present a tall, open hauling space for that big-screen TV. The seats fold down conventionally, too. And, in so-called "refresh" mode, you can leave the back seat up and fold down everything else to create a chaise lounge for a nap.

Fit does all that and drives nicely. Important because it is, after all, a car.

Steering stays centered nicely, without fussing from the driver, but reacts quickly and smoothly when turned. Steering feel and function are magic arts. Some get it very wrong. Fit gets it right.

The suspension might seem a bit stiff. We found it closer to sporty than to harsh, and not unexpected in a small car. Cornering and stability were agreeable.

We tried the six-speed manual around Manhattan. It shifted smoothly and required little effort; livable in the city.

We spent the rest of the test time in a CVT automatic transmission model in Northern Virginia. We generally loathe CVT gearboxes, but Fit's is acceptable.

It has steering-wheel paddle shifters to let you move through set gear ratios if you wish. And in CVT mode, it drops the engine speed a lot when you let up a little on the gas, as if it were a normal automatic up-shifting. Stomp the gas and it instantly grabs a lower ratio in a way that feels like a conventional downshift.

But floor it from a stop and you still get that slipping-clutch feel and sound until the car speed "catches up" to the CVT setting.

Reasonable people often disagree on matters of taste, but to our eye, the new Fit looks nicer. Less distinctive, but the silhouette's smoother.

The infotainment/connectivity system is wanting and baffling. And that's being generous. A special combo cable with HDMI to feed graphics from your iPhone to the car's 7-inch display screen didn't provide album covers, maps or much of anything.

More messing around might decode the operation. But decoding shouldn't be required. It should be as easy to link and use a phone as it is to start the car.

For those who crave more involvement, we suggest an "Absurd" mode that requires you to dig around all day in illogical, baffling layers of electronic menus.

Fit is aimed at young buyers. We bet a car's a commodity to many and that infotainment is a priority. Once they see how great the electronics suite works in, say, a Chevy Sonic, it could be hard to get them back to the Honda store.

It's heartbreaking for a great little car, which the Fit truly is, to lack a sweet suite of electronics to close the deal.

WHAT STANDS OUT

Space: How do they get so much room in there?

Mileage: Exceeds expectations.

Infotainment: Awkward, not intuitive.

Honda China sales down 3.6% in April

Honda’s China car sales were down 3.6% in April, compared to the same month last year. That follows a 2 percent year-on-year fall in March and a 27.6 percent rise in February. The company’s sales in the first four months of the year came to 222.408 vehicles, up 10.7 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Honda will double the number of car models it sells in China over the next two years to increase market share, Japan’s Nikkei newspaper reported last week. Honda, which operates car ventures in China with Dongfeng Motor and Guangzhou Automobile, aims to sell 900,000 cars in the country this year, up 18.9 percent from a year earlier.

Supplier’s electrical woes lead to Honda shutdown

http://www.examiner.org/news/36879-supplier-s-electrical-woes-lead-to-honda-shutdown

An interruption in Honda’s parts supply chain forced the automaker to suspend second-shift production Thursday at the East Liberty and Marysville auto plants.

Production is back to normal today, Honda spokeswoman Stacey Pond said.

She said Honda of America Manufacturing Inc. officials determined during the first shift that there were not enough parts to supply the second shift's needs.

They used a variety of notification methods to alert about 2,000 production line associates affected by the temporary shutdown.

Honda is not saying what part was unavailable nor identifying the parts supplier.

Ms. Pond said an electrical issue at the supplier’s facility interrupted its production.

When Honda Gave GM One Of History's Most Amazing Smackdowns

http://jalopnik.com/when-honda-gave-gm-one-of-historys-most-amazing-smackdo-1576732771

This is a story of hubris, determination, emissions, an Impala, and, of course, the amazing Soichiro Honda. It's a reminder that innovation can beat strength, and that the most defining characteristic of any giant is not its size, but it's susceptibility to cleverness.

I'm sort of amazed we've never officially talked about this here on Jalopnik, because it's an amazing story. It's a story you may have heard before, but it's absolutely worth repeating.

The most often cited version of the story is one retold by a former sales rep of American Honda's motorcycle division, a man named G. Duncan. Here's the background: it's 1973, and Honda is about to release their CVCC-engined Civic.

CVCC stands for "Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion" and is, essentially a design that uses prechambers with spark plugs to ignite a richer fuel mixture, which then propagates to the leaner mixture in the combustion chamber in the cylinder. That's a simplification, but the end result is that Honda was able to build engines that met the strict new emissions regulations in the US without the use of heavy, power-robbing, expensive catalytic converters. This was a big deal.

It was such a big deal that Ford and Chrysler had both signed up to license the technology. But not GM. In fact, here's what the CEO of GM, Richard Gerstenberg, said of Honda's technology:3

"Well, I have looked at this design, and while it might work on some little toy motorcycle engine…I see no potential for it on one of our GM car engines."4

Eventually, this statement got back to the head of Honda, Soichiro Honda. For those of you unfamiliar, Soichiro was an amazingly gifted engineer and a very determined man, starting Honda in a wooden shack making add-on engines for bicycles and eventually turning it into one of the biggest motorcycle and automobile manufacturers in the world. The hidden message here is you don't fucking call his engines "little toys."5

Clearly interested in "one of our GM car engines," Soichiro bought a 1973 Chevy Impala with a big-ass 5.7L V8 and had it air-freighted to Japan. I think you can see where this is heading. Honda instructed his engineers to design and build a CVCC system for the GM V8, and that's exactly what they did: they replaced the intake manifold, cylinder heads, and carburetor of the engine so that it used Honda's CVCC technology. He then had it flown back to Ann Arbor, where it was tested by the EPA.

And you know what? It worked. The system Gerstenberg had derided as only suitable for "some little toy" engine allowed the big, thirsty V8 to pass the new EPA emissions requirements without a catalytic converter. Horsepower remained at 160 HP, and some tests even showed a slight fuel economy improvement. You can see the whole test here, and just for fun, here's the EPA's conclusions:6

It wasn't 100% perfect, of course — NOx emissions were still higher than a catalyst-equipped car, but even so, the CVCC V8 was still massively cleaner than most other engines of the era and easily passed the EPA's requirements. Here's the high-speed results, for example:

So, let's just recap: CEO of GM talks some shit about Honda's technology. The man who founded Honda hears it, and instead of releasing some pissy statement to the press, gets a car from GM themselves and makes it better than they could do themselves. And he lets the EPA prove it.

Then, I imagine, he drops a mic and walks offstage.

Soichiro, you badass.

Record Honda sales from ATL Automotive

http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/auto/Record-Honda-sales-from-ATL-Automotive_16674311

KINGSTON, Jamaica — It was a defining moment in Petrena Purser's career as Honda brand manager when she had the pleasure of dining with Honda CEO Takuji Yamada at a recent meeting in Texas. Accompanying her was ATL Automotive's General Manager Sam McKenzie.

The exclusive local dealership was being awarded for its 2013 sales achievements -- Highest Sales Volume for the RHD (right-hand drive) market -- 614 units and Highest Market Share for the Latin America and Caribbean (North) region -- 10.8 per cent.

"I was tempted to pinch myself as I could not believe it was really happening. I was having dinner and conversation with the CEO of Honda," said a blushing Petrena Purser. Still brimming with excitement, she burst into laughter.

American Honda also recognised ATL Automotive for having amassed the highest recorded one-month sales total in the region's RHD history when the dealership delivered 122 units in May 2013 following the first staging of the historic 36-Hour Sale.

"Jamaicans will never want to miss a great deal on a Honda. So when we dropped our prices for those 36 hours last year, Hagley Park Road could not hold the traffic coming in. The CR-V is their favourite model by far, and so it accounted for the majority of the sales total. That's why we were confident in launching our 2014 campaign -- Jamaica Loves Honda. We believe it's the most premium of the Japanese brands and it's the dream of many Jamaicans to own a Honda. This year, we plan to take this brand across the length and breadth of Jamaica to make those dreams come true; staying true to Honda's motto - The Power of Dreams," she said.

Purser, a former sales consultant and supervisor, was nicknamed "great-white" by her colleagues due to her aggressive sales tactics. She's nabbed the coveted Employee of the Year and Supervisor of the Year awards to prove it.

"We are currently number 2 in the new-car industry, but it is my dream to see Honda in the number one position and I won't relent. I have the best sales and service teams in the industry and so the sky is the limit for Honda," she said.

Honda Civic, Hybrid & Natural Gas: Ultimate Guide

http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1078883_2013-honda-civic-hybrid-natural-gas-ultimate-guide?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+GreenCarReports+%28Green+Car+Reports%29

The Honda Civic originally made its name in the 1970s, arriving at the perfect time to attract tens of thousands of customers scared out of larger, thirstier vehicles by the oil crisis.

Four decades down the line and the Civic still has a reputation as a gas sipper, though the modern car is unrecognizable from its first-generation counterpart.

Now, you get a choice of ways to be green, by either selecting a regular, gasoline engine, or picking a hybrid or natural gas version. We've collated a selection of articles on the Civic and its various models, to bring you our ultimate guide.

Click here to read a full review of the 2014 Honda Civic

On this page, you can find details of Honda's greenest Civics, the Civic Hybrid and the Civic Natural Gas. Click through to page 2 for more general details on the Civic range. It's just a pity the U.S. doesn't get Europe's ultra-frugal diesel Civic...

2014 Honda Civic Hybrid
44 mpg city, 47 mpg highway, 45 mpg combined

The Civic Hybrid is currently the greenest of the Honda Civic range, using a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine, paired to a slim electric motor as part of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist system. All that drives through a continuously-variable transmission.

The car is now in its third generation and though the current Civic is nothing to write home about in most areas, it's still one of the most fuel-efficient cars on sale today. Updates for the 2014 model year boosted highway economy, improving its combined figure too.

2014 Honda Civic Natural Gas
27 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, 31 mpg combined

Look at the numbers above, and you might wonder what's so green about the Civic Natural Gas. Well, the clue is in the name--although it's a little less fuel-efficient than a regular Civic, natural gas burns more cleanly than petroleum products and emits less CO2 when burned.

Of course, it's less energy dense too, meaning the power and economy figures are nothing special, but it's also relatively cheap and the U.S. has its own natural gas reserves--so there are no foreign oil concerns for buyers.

IndyCar: Honda wants Ford to reconsider Indy

Honda's IndyCar project leader is optimistic that Ford will reconsider comments made last week in which the American manufacturer ruled out any IndyCar program in the foreseeable future.

Edsel Ford II, great-grandson of Henry Ford and a member of the Ford Motor Company board of directors, was quoted at a private event saying that IndyCar's support base is too small to make it worthwhile. HPD IndyCar project leader Mark Crawford said that he respects Ford's opinion, but that he believes that he has underestimated the value of being involved in the series.

"It's his prerogative to have his opinion on IndyCar racing," Crawford said. "It's certainly good to get it out there. We would welcome any competitor back into the series, and Ford has been a good competitor in the past.

"To Ford specifically, they're welcome to come out here and take a look. I trust that they have, and that's the reason they have the opinion that they do. But look a bit deeper, because I think that the IndyCar Series is a great value. It's great exposure. It's the only place where you can come to run the Indy 500, the biggest race in the world.

"They're welcome out here. Hopefully they reconsider – and if not Ford, someone else."

Both Honda and IndyCar engine rival Chevrolet have been open about their desire for a third manufacturer to enter the series and fill the void left by Lotus, which withdrew after a single uncompetitive season in 2012. Cosworth is actively seeking to put together an IndyCar program, but under series regulations it can only do so if aligned with a manufacturer partner.

The company's marketing director Tom Buckler told AUTOSPORT last month that Cosworth was hoping to continue talks with potential collaborators at the Indianapolis 500, and indicated that the "two or three" manufacturers involved in the current discussions are not U.S.-based.

Honda to decide the fate of the Euro-spec Accord shortly - report

If a new model is approved, it will likely be a few years off

Honda hasn't said much about the European Accord lately but a new report is indicating the company will soon decide whether or not to build a new model.

Speaking to Car Advice, Honda Australia director Stephen Collins said “I would expect a decision on Accord Euro in the next month or so." There's no word on which direction the company is leaning but Collins told the website "I can guarantee you that we’re fighting to keep our two Accord strategy going because it’s been hugely successful for us. So if there is one that becomes available then we’ll absolutely be going for it.”

While Collins said a lot of details are still up in the air, he confirmed the model would not be based on the Acura TLX or Chinese-spec Spirior. We he went on to say even if the model is approved it would be unlikely to arrive until 2016 at the earliest.

2014 Honda Civic vs 2014 Toyota Corolla
A Rematch of Top Selling Compacts

Last year we compared the just-introduced 2014 Toyota Corolla against the revised 2013 Honda Civic. Synonymous with value-packed motoring, these two compact cars are the top sellers in the segment thanks to a reputation for giving customers exactly what they want.

After the launch of the 2012 Honda Civic, consumers, dealers and the automotive press panned the car for not being the class leader it had once been. Knowing that Toyota was about to launch an all-new Corolla for the 2014 model year, Honda quickly updated the Civic for 2013 and addressed many of its shortcomings.

Back to Drawing Board, Again

2014 Honda Civic interior 7
But that didn’t matter very much because the new Corolla still beat the 2013 Civic in AutoGuide.com's comparison test last year. Our main complaints with the Civic were its small back seat, comparatively poor fuel economy, higher price tag and unrefined five-speed automatic. Not happy with being second best, Honda went back to the drawing board once again and for 2014, is introducing an unprecedented third straight year of significant revisions to the Civic.

The interior is tweaked once again with new styling and the addition of an available seven-inch Display Audio system, Honda’s “Lanewatch” blind spot camera and smart entry with push button ignition. But the biggest news has to do with the transmission. Much like the Corolla last year, the Civic gains a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) for 2014. Not only does this improve the vehicles refinement, but also bumps up fuel economy as well.

Efficiency Dead Heat

Our tester, a Civic EX-L with Navigation, is now officially rated at 30 MPG in the city and 39 MPG on the highway. That is a two MPG improvement in the city over the 2013 Civic EX-L Navi and a one MPG advantage in both categories over the 2014 Corolla S. In real world testing however, the cars are dead even. Both returned a 32.7 MPG mixed driving average after a week in our hands.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Honda Civic Review - Video

2014 Toyota Corolla 2
Even if it’s a wash in terms of fuel economy, the Civic does hold an edge in power. Already making more power than the Corolla last year, the Civic’s 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine receives a modest bump of three hp and one lb-ft of torque this year bringing the totals to 143 hp and 129 lb-ft. Although that isn’t a huge advantage over the Corolla’s 132 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque, it is still noticeable. There is a more powerful and more efficient version of Toyota’s 1.8-liter engine, but it is only available on the LE-ECO trim level.

Some of the power advantage the Civic possesses is eaten up by a curb weight 65 lbs. heavier than the Corolla. On the road, we were divided over which vehicle was easier to drive. Both cars feature highly boosted steering but the Civic’s smaller diameter steering wheel makes the car feel more nimble.

Two CVTs, Two Different Behaviors

Honda’s new CVT is designed to feel like a traditional automatic much more than the Toyota CVT does. Noticeable shift points complete with momentary pauses have been programmed into the car’s mapping and probably affects fuel economy if only a little.

In the Corolla S, there are paddle shifters and a sport mode included if you want to pretend that you’re shifting gears. The Civic can also come with paddles, but only in the coupe model.

The Civic does feel more capable in corners and tracts straighter at high speeds. However, neither of these are even remotely sporty automobiles. They are simple to drive, reliable cars for general car consumers and as always, both excel at the task.

Space vs Comfort

Honda could only do so much when refreshing the Civic and rebuilding the entire body was out of the question. That means the Civic still trails the Corolla when it comes to interior space. Rear seat passengers in the Toyota enjoy 41.4 inches of legroom, which is more than a five-inch advantage compared to the cramped Civic. It’s the same story with cargo space: the Corolla has an extra half cubic foot of cargo carrying capacity over the Civic’s 12.5 cubic foot trunk.

Corolla Interior 3

Even with less space, the Honda’s ergonomics are better. The seating position and dashboard are better placed for comfortable driving than the Corolla’s ridiculously tall dashboard and comparatively less comfortable seats. Many found the sightlines in the Civic to be better thanks to the side mirrors being mounted to the door and not the A pillars.

The Civic’s optional LaneWatch side-view camera that is infiltrating its way into every Honda product and we couldn’t be happier about that.  Honda’s Display Audio system lacks buttons in favor of an iPhone-like control interface that isn’t as straightforward to use as the Corolla’s system.

Corolla Interior 2

While on the topic of Display Audio, it allows owners to access to a limited number of applications including a $60 navigation app. Not only is this convenient, but it actually makes the trim of our test car, the EX-L with Navigation, sort of obsolete.

And that brings us to issue of price. The Corolla begins at a price of $17,160 after destination charges which is over $1,500 cheaper than a base Civic’s price of $19,180. As tested, the gap remains the same with our Corolla S Premium featuring the driver convenience package priced at $23,570 compared to the Civic EX-L with Navi commanding $25,030.

2014 Toyota Corolla vs 2014 Honda Civic 3

The Verdict

Unlike last year, there is no clear cut winner anymore. The 2014 Honda Civic has closed the gap on the 2014 Toyota Corolla. While the Corolla is cheaper and offers more room inside, the Civic is more enjoyable to drive and features more leading edge technology. It really comes down to personal priorities and preferences as to which car makes better sense for you. Neither is a bad choice and it’s safe to say their sales battle will rage on for years to come.

Honda to power new Formula Lites open-wheel racing series

Open-wheel racing is almost always incredibly exciting to watch, whether it's the constant passing of the Indy 500 on an oval or the technological tour-de-force from Formula 1. However, both of those disciplines are essentially impossible for a normal person to enter. Of course, there are already cheaper, more amateur-friendly open-wheel competitions, like Formula Vee. A new SCCA Pro Racing series called Formula Lites aims to be a step in the ladder between those, offering a development opportunity to young drivers who want to be professionals.

The series already has some impressive backers. One of the biggest needs is now filled, as Honda has signed on as the engine supplier. All of the cars in Formula Lites will use the company's K24 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. The automaker didn't specify power output for the competition engine, but in production models the K24 has made in the neighborhood of 190-200 horsepower in many applications. That should make the racers plenty potent.

All of the cars are using the new carbon fiber FL15 chassis from Crawford Composites, and Pirelli is the series' tire supplier. The organizers' goal for the cars is to keep racing costs down, while offering a reliable platform. Formula Lites plans to start racing with a few events later in 2014, and the full calendar begins in 2015. Scroll down to read the full announcement about Honda's involvement.

Formula Lites Selects Honda Power
05/14/2014 - SANTA CLARITA, Calif.

Engine paired with Crawford FL15 carbon composite chassis

Next step in Honda development ladder from karting and Formula F

Honda Performance Development is pleased that it has been selected to supply Honda's production 2.4-liter, four-cylinder Honda K24 engine to power the new Formula Lites chassis being produced by Crawford Composites for a new racing series promoted by High Performance Group.

Formula Lites is a new professional racing series, headed by motorsports veteran and HPG principals Dennis McCormack and Ryan Arciero, and sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing. Scheduled to launch at select events in 2014, with a full schedule of events planned for 2015, the series is aimed at developing young, professional drivers.

"We couldn't be more impressed with this Formula Lites car and their plans for the series," said Jeff Barrow, HPD manager, commercial motorsports. "In working with HPG and Crawford Composites, it was their goal to keep costs down and reliability up. I'm happy to say that our production Honda K24 engine will meet their requirements for cost and reliability, and at the same time provide great power to this fantastic looking car. I would expect that many of our current Honda Racing Line participants would love to get behind the wheel of one!"

Created by a design team led by Crawford Composite's Andy Scriven at the company's Denver, N.C. headquarters, the Formula Lites carbon composite chassis is built to current FIA Formula 3 technical regulations, including state-of-the-art electronics and an in-house designed paddleshift transmission system.

"Crawford Composites is absolutely delighted to have one of our long-standing partners, Honda Performance Development, providing the engines for the new Crawford FL15," said Max Crawford, president of Crawford Composites. "HPD produces some of the top engines in motorsports, and their long-standing commitment to auto racing has been tremendous. Together, the Crawford FL15 will be exceptionally affordable and, at the same time, a high tech vehicle enabling young drivers to continue to elevate their racing skills in the new Formula Lites series."

Series organizer High Performance Group is headed by racing veteran Dennis McCormack, who began his motorsports career in 1968. Working his way up through the ranks as a mechanic, crew chief, team manager and eventually an Indy car team owner with the formation of McCormack Motorsports.

"We are pleased to announce HPD as the official engine supplier to the Formula Lites series," said Dennis McCormack. "HPD is a leader in motorsports development and has a history of promoting grass roots racing. Their commitment to Formula Lites will give drivers an opportunity to take the next step in professional racing."

Honda releases updated N-One super-compact

An updated version of Honda's popular and adorable premium super-compact, the N-One, went on sale in Japan on Friday.

Unlike traditional mid-generational refreshes, the N-One's does not come with a facelift. That's because the car trades primarily on its exterior design, a throwback to the 1967 Honda N360. The retro body shares Honda's N-series kei car platform, which also underpins the more conventional N-Wgn and the high-roof N-Box. Instead, the N-One's update adds more safety features, better fuel economy, and mod cons.

The new N-One adopts Honda's City-Brake Active System, basically a rear-end collision warning that alerts drivers to an impending crash. If the driver fails to respond, brakes are automatically applied. The system also controls engine output to prevent unintended acceleration if the driver mashes the go pedal while there's obstacle within four meters of the front of the car. Side curtain airbags are also now standard.

The city car now also gets 67 mpg, thanks to reduced friction and improved thermal efficiency from its 660cc DOHC three-cylinder. Output is still capped at 67hp per kei car standards, and the engine is mated to a CVT on both front- and all-wheel-drive models. Curb weight ranges from 1,852 to 2,028 lbs depending on options.

The glass now boasts both UV and infrared blocking technology, the latter to reduce heat transferred into the cabin by sunlight. Sharp Electronics' Plasmacluster air filtering system, which claims to reduce allergens and sterilizes mold, is now standard as well.

Lastly, two new colors, Fresh Lime Metallic (available with an optional white roof) and Horizon Turquoise Pearl (available with an optional silver roof), are now available, bringing the color combo count to 25. Sadly, Honda has no plans to export this stylish city runabout to the US.

Honda Accord Hybrid misses 47 mpg label, Consumer Reports finds

LOS ANGELES (Bloomberg) -- Honda Motor Co.’s gasoline-electric Accord is the most fuel-efficient U.S. mid-size sedan yet doesn’t get its window sticker average, Consumer Reports found, making it the latest hybrid to fall short in the magazine’s road tests.

The 2014 Accord Hybrid, priced from $29,155, averaged 40 miles (64 kilometers) per gallon of gasoline in combined city and highway driving, Consumer Reports said today in a statement. That may disappoint buyers expecting the car to achieve its Environmental Protection Agency city/highway window sticker rating of 47 mpg, the magazine said. Such labels are intended to show the actual fuel economy for new cars and trucks.

“We’ve found that the EPA tests often exaggerate the fuel economy of hybrids,” said Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports. The magazine also said Honda’s hybrid scored lower than the four-cylinder engine gasoline version due to ride comfort, emergency handling and cabin noise issues.

The lackluster review comes after Consumer Reports found a significant shortfall in the fuel economy of Ford Motor Co.’s Fusion and C-Max hybrids in 2012. While the magazine and other reviewers say EPA tests don’t accurately reflect real-world driving conditions, particularly after Ford, Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. restated fuel ratings for some models, the agency hasn’t revised its methods.

Honda, Toyota, BMW Tops For Diversity Market

The evolution of the U.S. demographic profile kind of looks like what has happened to the U.S. auto market over the past 14 years, but in slow motion: whites (Euro-Americans?) are -- like the former Big Three -- shrinking in share while the imports are gaining. Pew Research estimates that by 2050 or so, those of European provenance will be 47% of the population, versus 67% now. Hispanics will be about 30% of the population, African-Americans 13% and Asians about 9%.

Although Asians (heterogeneously speaking) are under 5% of the U.S. population, they are the best-educated and most-affluent subgroup of Americans. Their numbers grew 43% between 2000 and 2010, per U.S. Census statistics, as did the number of Hispanic Americans in that period.

Car marketers, take note: Strategic Vision diced its 2014 New Vehicle Experience Study around similarities and differences of various ethnic groups to get a bead on which brands are popular with Asians, African-Americans and Hispanics. The review is based on over 525,000 respondents who self-reported their ethnicity.

While Honda, Toyota and BMW all were most likely to be “definitely considered” in a future vehicle choice across the three ethnicities in Strategic Vision’s study, the magnitude of their consideration varied drastically by ethnicity. For African-Americans, BMW was the brand most often cited as a future vehicle choice. Thirty-seven percent of study respondents who identified as African-American said they would definitely consider a BMW. The U.S. industry average was 23%.

For future "definitely would consider" brands, BMW, Honda, Lexus, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz were the top five brands for African-Americans. Toyota, Honda, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi topped out for Latinos. For Asians, the top brands were Honda, Toyota. Lexus, BMW and Mercedes. By contrast, the entire market -- regardless of ethnicity -- awards Honda and Toyota the number one and two positions, respectively, followed by Ford, BMW and Chevrolet.

Toyota enjoys the biggest market share among Asian American and Hispanic consumers and is number two among African-Americans. Nissan has the most share among African-Americans, but is third in market share behind Honda among Hispanics and Asian Americans. Chevrolet is third in share among African-Americans and fifth among Latinos. Ford is either fourth or fifth in share among all three groups.

Looking forward, things change. The directional picture brings in other brands. To get a perspective on where auto brand share among the three groups might be heading, the firm took current market share of each brand among Hispanics, Asian Americans and African-Americans, and indexed those numbers with sales growth for the groups versus sales growth in the general market.

From that perspective, Dodge, Nissan, Chrysler, Cadillac and Kia enjoy the best outlook in the African-American market; Nissan, VW, Dodge, Honda and Hyundai lead for Latinos; and BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, Toyota and Honda have the top share among Asian Americans.

Strategic Vision also looked at emotional and practical auto attributes. Shared by Asian Americans, Latino Americans and African-Americans is the desire to have a vehicle that's "cool," the second-most-indexed images for a vehicle purchased by all three groups. Family oriented, powerful and classy are the top image drivers, respectively, for the three groups.

Honda Accord 'most stolen' car for 5th year in a row

Honda Accord owners beware: LoJack reports your car is the most stolen vehicle in the country for the fifth year in a row.

Honda's Civic came in at number 2 followed by Toyota's Camry and Corolla and the Chevy Silverado. Acura's Integra, the Cadillac Escalade, Ford F-350, Nissan Altima and Chevy Tahoe rounded out the top 10 list.

These are also some of the most popular models on the road, which may explain why so many are stolen.

If you want to avoid being a crime victim, buy a turquoise color car. That's the least likely to be stolen.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2014/05/27/hyundai-kia-honda-greenest-report/9625771/

Hyundai-Kia beats Honda as 'greenest' automaker

Combined car company Hyundai-Kia, both owned by South Korea's Hyundai Motor Group, overtook Honda Motor as the "greenest" automaker in the U.S., according to a report today by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

For the first time since UCS began tracking the environmental friendliness of automakers in 1998, all eight major companies it rates improved their scores in the past year.

Hyundai and Kia are marketed as two separate brands in the U.S. and are operated separately. Elsewhere, they are considered two brands sold by a single, combined automaker.

The rankings lean heavily on vehicles' tailpipe emissions.

Key to the Hyundai-Kia championship: "Turbocharging and downsizing engines in a number of its models while also introducing hybrid-electric versions of two of its top-selling vehicles, the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima," UCS said.

STORY: Hyundai sets $499 lease for 2015 fuel-cell Tucson

Honda leads in a number of categories, but hasn't kept up with fast-moving "green" targets with its Accord in the mid-size category, UCS said, even though Accord is available as a gas-electric hybrid.

Honda finished second in the report card.

Third was a three-way tie: Toyota, Nissan, Volkswagen.

UCS said, "The Detroit Three – Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler – continue to bring up the rear, as they have in every automaker ranking.

"However, some domestic automakers are making greater strides than others. Ford led the Detroit automakers while achieving the greatest percent reduction in smog-forming emissions of any manufacturer evaluated.

"The company also enjoyed strong improvements in global warming emissions due to its increased use of hybrids and its focus on smaller, turbocharged engines in vehicles ranging from the Ford Focus sedan to its iconic, best-selling large pick-up, the F-150, demonstrating that fuel-economy gains are possible across an automaker's entire fleet".

Honda revamps ordering system to give dealers cars they want

LOS ANGELES -- Ever order a Big Mac at McDonald's and get a fish sandwich instead?

If so, you understand the limitations of the typical car dealer's inventory-ordering system. What the dealer wants and what the factory is able to build often are miles apart, leading to frustration when the wrong car shows up on the lot.

Honda aims to better bridge that gap this week, when it launches the APEX inventory system.

APEX -- for Allocation Preferencing and Exchange -- is the result of five years of software coding and deliberations among dealers, the factory and Honda's field staff. The system will give dealers more flexibility in ordering vehicles, changing vehicle specifications before the units are built and swapping vehicles with other retailers before the units are in transit.

"When dealers request changes to an order, we put constraints on what they are able to change," said Mike Ike, Honda sales and production planner. "When they go into APEX, they are seeing all the capacity the factory has. If we can't give them their No. 1 choice, they can at least pick the second or third option. It allows much better inventory planning."

APEX "will get us more of the cars we really want," said Brad Mugg, general manager of Honda's top-selling dealership, Norm Reeves Honda, in Cerritos, Calif.

Most importantly, APEX gets Honda closer to the goal of having its retail system driven by dealers' orders rather than what the factory churns out, said Dennis Manns, Honda's vice president of sales and logistics planning.

For nearly 20 years, Honda and Acura dealers have processed vehicle orders and shipments from the factory with a computerized system called MOVE, for Market Oriented Vehicle Environment.

When MOVE was launched, it was ahead of its time in helping Honda dealers accurately place orders with the factory. But that was when Honda sold only a few nameplates with limited trim levels, built at two U.S. factories. As the number of Honda vehicles increased -- along with the complexity of specifications, option packages and the production base -- software engineers made temporary fixes to keep the system running.

MOVE had its limitations. As build complexity grew, dealers stopped getting the vehicles they wanted. In the time between a dealer's order and the production run, a request for a red, front-wheel-drive Pilot LX might be filled with a black, all-wheel-drive Pilot EX.

With APEX, Manns said, dealers will get "the right cars at the right place at the right time."

Among areas of improvement:

n Capturing true dealer demand, in terms of aggregating what dealers desire in model, color, trim, transmission and other key options, and matching it to future assembly. "We don't want to offer something we can't supply. It's what we are able to produce and can be instantly confirmed in real time," Manns said.

n Confirming the vehicles coming down the assembly line, which a dealer can see in real time. Under MOVE, build confirmation took two weeks. With APEX, confirmation ostensibly happens instantly, with formal confirmation three days later.

n Incorporating seasonal fluctuations into dealers' turn-and-earn allocations, so in winter, for instance, snow belt dealers get fewer vehicles while Florida dealers with an influx of snowbirds receive more.

n Creating a "marketplace" in which dealers can exchange incoming product, which is then tied in to Honda's factory capacity and production runs. Such an exchange is limited to a specific nameplate -- a blue Civic LX for a red Civic EX, for instance -- but APEX allows this to happen before the car is loaded on a transporter.

"We will always have dealer trades, but this is more about fine-tuning your inventory system," Manns said.

n Helping dealers create a model for future inventory, by tracking and profiling the nuances of their past ordering preferences and selling rates.

Honda representatives have been on a monthlong, 28-city roadshow, training 3,000 Honda and Acura dealership employees how to use the system.

But for all the changes and improvements, APEX uses much the same user interface as MOVE, but with more functionality.

"We didn't want something foreign to them, to be teaching them Latin," Manns said. "The drivers and software are the big difference. We just needed to have a system that could keep up with the pace and be more market responsive."

Norm Reeves' Mugg agreed. "The old system was user-friendly, so I'm glad they didn't change the look and feel," he said. "They just enhanced it. It's a big step forward."

Thai unrest spurs Honda unit to cut output and delay new plant

(Reuters) - The Thai unit of Honda Motor Co (7267.T) has cut production at its Ayutthaya plant to 60 percent of capacity to reflect weak domestic demand, voicing concerns sales may fall short of its target this year after months of political unrest.

Thailand's auto sector, southeast Asia's biggest, is one of the more visible victims of the weakened economy and unrest which culminated on Thursday in army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha taking control of the government in a coup.

The sector has fired more than 30,000 subcontracted workers this year and slashed production, as sales plunge after months of political unrest that threatens to drive some manufacturers offshore.

The Japanese carmaker has also decided to delay by between six months and a year the startup of a new $530 million plant from its previously planned April 2015 date, said Pitak Pruittisarikorn, executive vice president at Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co.

"We have been worried about the unfavorable conditions since earlier this year, both economic and the political situation," he told reporters on the sidelines of a marketing event.

The Ayutthaya plant has an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles, while the new plant under construction in Prachinburi will have an annual capacity of 120,000 vehicles, he said.

The production cut, which involved scrapping overtime shifts, reflects weaker demand and aims to clear unsold stock, Pitak said, adding its inventories were now back to normal.

Pitak said Honda's sales in Thailand may miss a target of 160,000 vehicles this year, while overall domestic sales are likely to fall below 1 million vehicles.

Domestic auto sales in April dropped 33.2 percent on the year, according to data from the Federation of Thai Industries.

Sales fell 7.7 percent to 1.33 million cars in 2013.

Domestic sales have declined since the ending in 2012 of a government first-car subsidy scheme, which had boosted sales 81 percent that year.

This version of the story corrects domestic sales target in paragraph 8 to 160,000 vehicles.

IAB Report – Honda Mobilio launch officially confirmed in July

Pictures published on enthusiast forums reveal that trial production started a few weeks ago at the Greater Noida facility. The Brio-based MPV was showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo. It was shown in Indonesia for the first time in September last year, and is on sale in the archipelago for three months, with over 25,000 examples already on the roads.

It is a given that the Mobilio will launch in petrol and diesel variants. The diesel engine would be the same 1.5-liter i-DTEC mill that is powering the Amaze and City, which imaginably should return the best fuel efficiency for an MPV in India, as it has done for the other two cars.

Top-end variants of the MPV will get dual front airbags, ABS, alloy wheels, steering-mounted controls, rear wash/wipe and defogger as standard.

Honda said at the Auto Expo that the Mobilio will appeal to MPV customers and buyers of sedans and SUVs.

UK Vehicle Ownership Satisfaction Survey Finds the Germans Leading the Way

The Germans seem to have been on the upswing in consumer satisfaction surveys, like the established UK-based WhatCar?/JD Power study, with their familiar blend of excellent perceived quality, simple designs that age well and the promise of reliability.

Things may not always hold true for the latter, but the fact that VW Group managed to snag the first three positions in the standings must mean something.

Therefore, the most appreciated cars of 2014, in the UK, are the VW Up!, the VW Golf Plus and the Skoda-badged Yeti crossover.

Making up the rest of the top ten, the other cars are, in order, the Mercedes C-Class, VW Scirocco and Tiguan, Lexus CT200h, Skoda Octavia, Volvo V70/XC70 and (strangely, given its previously bad rep for reliability and durability), the Jaguar XF – they must have fixed enough of its problems with the facelift to make it better in meaningful ways.

At the bottom end of the tables, counting back from spot 109 to 100, we have the Chevy Spark, Alfa Romeo MiTo, Citroen C3, BMW X1, Ford Ka, Fiat Grande Punto, Citroen C4, Smart ForTwo, Ford Fusion and Citroen C1.

A heap of other lists was also compiled based on the information gathered, and they are posted below.

Honda delays 2015 Fit launch amid assembly difficulties in Mexico

Honda has reportedly confirmed that its 2015 Fit is still not ready to arrive in the US market, falling behind the initial April launch expectation.

The Japanese automaker appears to have encountered difficulty ramping up production at its new assembly facility in Mexico, where the Fit is being manufactured in North America for the first time.

Quality inspectors reportedly discovered deficiencies in the first batch of Fit subcompacts that arrived in the US, forcing the company to fix the cars and reevaluate its manufacturing processes to prevent the problems from recurring.

"We were not in a panic situation," Honda spokesman Chris Martin told Automotive News. "We had a plan to do this if needed."

The company suggests the 2015 Fit has been selling in Japan without any problems with domestic production. The Mexican factory is said to rely on workers for many tasks that are handled by robots in Japan, however.

Martin claims Fits rolling off the assembly line in Celaya now meet all quality guidelines. Dealers are expected to begin receiving the vehicles sometime in mid June.

Honda Accord still best-selling car to individuals in first quarter

Honda claims the Accord sedan maintained its status as the best-selling car to individuals in the US market for the first quarter of the year.

The qualifier "to individual car buyers" suggests Toyota's Camry may still take the crown for overall sales, which includes fleet purchases. The claims are based on Honda's analysis of new-vehicle registration data from analyst firm IHS Automotive.

Aside from the Accord, Honda boasts that three of its other top-selling models -- the Civic, CR-V and Odyssey -- led their segments in retail registrations for the first quarter of the year. The Accord maintained a small margin of less than 1,000 units over its nearest competitor, however the Civic was the outright winner in the small-car segment by more than 10,000 units.

"We're thrilled to be leading the pack in the first lap around the track in 2014," said Jeff Conrad, senior VP of the Honda Division.

The Accord held the same position among cars in 2013. In contrast, Ford shipped more than twice as many F-150 pickups to take the prize for best-selling vehicle.

2015 Honda Fit hits the China auto market

The 2015 Honda Fit has been launched on the China car market, featuring a very busy grille with only one tiny chrome strip. Price for the new Honda starts at 73.800 yuan and ends at 112.800 yuan, positioning the Fit straight into one of the most competitive segments of the Chinese auto market.

The Honda Fit is manufactured in China by the Guangzhou-Honda joint venture, it debuted in April on the 2014 Beijing Auto Show. The Fit is available with only one engine: a 1.5 liter four-cylinder with 131hp and 155nm, mated to a 5-speed manual or a CVT. The old 1.3 has been deleted.

Honda sales are a bit down lately, so a lot is expected from the new Fit. Honda also plans to launch the new Odyssey within is year and is working on an exciting China-only sporty sedan.

Honda viewed as top-quality brand, survey says

Honda and Mercedes-Benz are viewed as the highest quality auto brands, according to a new report.

The survey of customer perceptions was released this week by ALG, the analytics subsidiary of TrueCar.com.

"When consumers buy a car, brand perception directly impacts how quickly the vehicle will depreciate," said Larry Dominique, president of ALG, in a statement. "Many consumers lack any real experience with the brand, so there is often a gulf between perception and reality. When deciding on a car purchase, consumers need to consider more than just build quality – they need to consider how the brand is perceived in the marketplace."

Honda was best among mainstream brands, followed by Toyota and Volkswagen. Mercedes-Benz was best for luxury brands, followed by Lexus and BMW.

The results were based on a survey of 30,000 recent car buyers, asking the buyers for their views of brands other than the ones they had just purchased.

Honda Dominates Best-Sellng Cars With Just Three Models

To figure out why Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (NYSE: HMC) continues to be a threat to the market shares of Toyota Corp. (NYSE: TM), Chrysler and Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F), there is no need to look beyond its product line-up. It had three of the 20 best-selling vehicles in May. And its dominance has been earned without a full-sized pickup, which is a huge advantage for each one of the Big Three.

The top-selling vehicles in America were pickups. With the exception of Toyota’s Camry, the Ford F-Series, Chevy Silverado and Chrysler’s Ram outsell any car. Just below them in sales are a dozen cars that are relatively small, inexpensive and fuel-efficient. Manufacturers cannot do well without a significant presence in this portion of the market.

Honda’s model line covers each of the segments that make up most of the top 20 sellers. Its Accord, part of the mid-sized, high gas mileage portion of the market was the fourth best-selling vehicle in the United States last month. It comes in four versions — a coupe, a sedan, a plug-in and a hybrid. That is as broad a spread of models as any other brand has. And the Accord is cheap, with a base price of $23,625. Honda sold 38,107 Accords last month.

Honda sold 36,089 Civic models in May. The Civic comes in seven versions, which, like the Accord, include a coupe, sedan and hybrid. It sits in the low-priced small car segment and has a price tag as low as $18,190. It was the seventh best-selling vehicle in the United States last month.

The tenth best-selling vehicle in the United States last month was Honda’s tiny SUV, the CR-V. Honda sold 32,430 of these. The CR-V has a base price of $23,120, and has a hybrid version.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Honda’s success is that it only offers six vehicles in America. That is far fewer than Ford, GM, Chrysler and even Nissan. It has leveraged its small model line into a dominant position, which makes it extraordinary among major manufacturers.

ALSO READ: The Best-Selling Products of All Time

Honda has at least two advantages that help it. The first is how cleverly it has positioned its vehicles among the segments of the market that represent the most sales among cars, light trucks, sports cars and SUV/Crossovers. The other is that it has established a level of brand quality that can only be matched by Toyota. In the most recent J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study, it had six vehicles (virtually its entire model line, its Acura luxury brand included) to Toyota’s seven (which includes its Lexus luxury line) to GM’s eight. Of course, GM has more brands and more models than any other car company selling vehicles in the United States.

It is reasonable to say that Honda management has done a better job of making and positioning vehicles in America than any other company. It has leveraged this into sales per model that are almost certainly the envy of its competitors.

Can Honda Motor Co. Grow Without the Yen Effect ?

Japanese automaker Honda reported respectable numbers in the fiscal year ended March, with both revenue and profit thriving from the weak yen. But as its effect wanes, how's the company placed to perform over the coming quarters? True, Honda is working hard to control cost and also planning new vehicle launches to maintain its sales momentum, but is that enough?

Takeaways from the yearly performance
Honda reported revenue of 11.8 trillion yen ($116 billion at current exchange rates) for the fiscal year ended March 2014, up 19.9% from last year. The automobile and motorcycle segments posted unit sales growth of 7.7% and 9.9%, respectively, while the power products business dipped 0.6%.

Auto sales got a boost from Asia, with volumes rising 18.2% year over year to 818,000 units in Japan and 14.6% to 1.2 million units elsewhere. In Japan, buyers lapped up the remodeled Fit that was launched in September, while the N-series' N-WGN, the compact SUV Vezel, and the fully refurbished Odyssey found takers as well. Sales also leaped as customers hurriedly bought vehicles in March to dodge an 8% sales tax that began in April.

Honda Odyssey. Source: Honda Motor Co.

India was the other bright spot, with volumes up 83% to 134,339 units, owing to the popularity of the compact sedans, the Amaze and the City. In North America sales grew 1.5% to 1.8 million units, and Europe remained flat at 169,000 units.

Asia dominated the motorcycle segment with 14% year-over-year volume growth during the fiscal year. The CB Shine and Active models sold big in India, and the former became the best-selling 125cc motorcycle in the world, recording 3 million units sold.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's economic policies paid off as a weaker yen brought home a net profit of 574.1 billion yen ($5.65 billion), up 56.4% from previous year. Operating income of 750.2 billion yen ($7.38 billion) was 37.7% higher than fiscal 2013 driven by the higher sales and favorable currency. Though operating expenses rose during the year, it was more than compensated by the increased sales volume and favorable model mix.

Cash from operating activities was 1.2 trillion yen ($11.8 billion), an improvement from the previous fiscal year's 800.7 billion yen. But free cash flow generation plunged further to 479.5 billion yen ($4.72 billion) as the company spent heavily on capex.

Headwinds
Fiscal year 2014 was good for Japanese carmakers primarily due to the benefits available to them thanks to currency exchange rates. Honda's average conversion rate was 100 yen per dollar compared with 83 yen per dollar in fiscal year 2013, which increased the amount of overseas profits when converted to yen. But in fiscal 2015, the company expects the yen to remain stable. Without factoring in the benefits from the currency exchange rates, it has forecast only a modest 3.6% growth in net income to 595 billion yen for fiscal year 2015, no match for this year's bumper profits.

The company's also facing stiff competition in the U.S. auto industry -- its largest market accounting for 40% of total sales. In the last four months, sales of Honda vehicles in the U.S. were down 3.3% to 405,740 units despite the heavy incentives that it's offering. Bloomberg reports that Honda's incentives increased 42% year over year to $2,010 in the first quarter of 2014, way ahead of the 7.4% increase recorded by the industry.

Honda expects its sales volume to remain flat at 1.8 million units in North America in fiscal year 2015. It's hoping that sales in Japan (172,000 units) and the rest of Asia (304,000 units) will compensate for this weakness in its largest market. This could take Honda's overall sales to 4.8 million units from the current level of 4.3 million units; yet its target of 6 million vehicle sales by 2016-2017 still remains a distant dream.

Time-tested strategies
On a positive note, Honda understands that unveiling fresh cars is crucial for pushing sales, while keeping costs under control is essential for boosting profitability, and it's working hard on both of these factors.

In fiscal year 2014, it successfully launched the third-generation Honda Fit in Japan and China (in India it is labeled the Jazz). Soon the new Fit will make its appearance in North America together with the compact SUV -- the HR-V -- that sells as the Vezel in Japan. In China, Honda also launched the Crider and Jade models, and plans to roll out nine new or remodeled cars over the next two years to bolster sales and increase market share.

Honda Fit. Source: Honda Motor Co.

Also, the carmaker has deployed several methods on the cost reduction front. These include sharing platforms among models to improve efficiency and lower development costs, and reducing the production cost of hybrids, which are generally higher than costs associated with producing conventional cars. The company also reduced its pension benefit from January, and has even implemented lean production in its manufacturing processes.

It achieved cost savings of 15 billion yen ($147.5 million) in fiscal year 2014 and is trying to continue the momentum. While cost savings will not give a similar boost to earnings as the currency exchange rate benefits, it will definitely aid profitability in the future.

Foolish takeaway
Honda did well in fiscal year 2014, but sustaining its growth rate could be difficult once the benefits from currency exchange rates moderate. It's also in bit of a rut in the U.S. and needs to accelerate sales. But management is aware of the challenges, and is aggressively cutting costs and bringing out new models to generate sustainable growth.

Honda to double parts sourcing from India; eyes over Rs 800 crore

TAPUKARA (RAJASTHAN): Japanese car giant Honda plans to nearly double sourcing of auto components, including engine parts, from India to over Rs 800 crore during 2014-15.

The company's wholly-owned subsidiary Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) is also planning to double exports of vehicles from the country to other parts of the world.

"We are targeting to increase our component exports and it will be nearly doubled. It will cross Rs 800 crore during the current fiscal," HCIL Senior Vice President (Marketing and Sales) Jnaneswar Sen told PTI here.

The company had clocked a revenue of Rs 420 crore from export of components in 2013-14.

HCIL exports different components, including crank shaft, cylinder head and transmission, from its manufacturing unit at Tapukara in Rajasthan to other global subsidiaries of Honda in markets such as South East Asia, Latin America and the UK.

Talking about vehicle exports, HCIL Senior Vice President and Director (Sales and Marketing) Shigeru Yamazaki said: "We are looking to double car exports from India during this financial year. It should cross 10,000 units in 2014-15."

The company had shipped around 5,500 vehicles last fiscal to mainly South Africa, besides Nepal and Bhutan. HCIL exported its small car Brio and sedan Amaze.

Honda has also started selling the India-made City in South Africa.

When asked if the company's upcoming MPV Mobilio will also be exported, Yamazaki said: "Yes, Mobilio may also be exported. It will depend on demand. However, our priority is India."

The company will launch the seven-seater Mobilio in July in both petrol and diesel options in India.

Earlier, HCIL had said it would increase output from its Tapukara plant by starting a second production shift in seven to eight months to help meet its target of an almost 50 per cent jump in sales to 2 lakh units in 2014-15.

The company may also consider ramping up the installed capacity of the plant in the next two-three years as it targets sales of 3 lakh units a year by 2016-17 as part of its aim to sell 60 lakh vehicles globally in the same period.

Honda currently rolls out 60,000 units a year in one shift from the 450-acre Tapukara facility. The total installed capacity of the plant is 1.2 lakh units in two shifts.

HCIL also has a facility at Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, which can produce 1.2 lakh cars every year.

Honda Super Cub first vehicle to receive 3D trademark in Japan

http://www.autoblog.com/2014/06/03/honda-super-cub-3d-trademark-japan-official/

The term "iconic" gets thrown around a lot, but if there was ever a design worthy of the honorific, surely it's the Honda Super Cub. That's not just our opinion, though: it's the official word from the Japanese Patent Office, which has recognized the classic scooter's shape with a three-dimensional trademark.

The category was introduced in Japan back in 1997 to immortalize distinctive designs, and is subject to very strict criteria. In fact, this marks the first time it has been applied to a vehicle – and one of the few industrial products to be awarded the recognition.

Little wonder it was applied to this little wonder, too. With over 87 million units made since its introduction in 1958, Honda claims the Super Cub to be "the world's largest selling vehicle," with production taking place at 15 factories in 14 countries and sales in 160 markets around the world.

HONDA SUPER CUB BECOMES FIRST VEHICLE IN JAPAN TO RECEIVE THREE-DIMENSIONAL TRADEMARK
30/05/14

The iconic design and shape of the world's largest selling vehicle, Honda's Super Cub scooter, has been recognised with it becoming the first vehicle in Japan to be granted a three-dimensional trademark.

Introduced in Japan in 1997, three-dimensional trademarks can be granted to a product which has acquired distinctiveness through long and extensive use. Very strict criteria is applied to registrations, and the Super Cub becomes one of very few industrial products to achieve such status.

A key determining factor for the Japan Patent Office when considering the very rare endorsement was the consistent design concept which Honda has maintained with the Super Cub over more than 50 years since it was introduced in 1958; while continuously achieving functional improvements throughout its long history.

The Super Cub is the world's largest selling vehicle, with cumulative worldwide production reaching 87 million units* as of March 2014, and sales across more than 160 countries.

Honda Super Cub production

Honda is currently producing the Super Cub series at 15 production plants in 14 countries around the world; most notably Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brazil, China, Nigeria and Japan. Cumulative worldwide production figures are as follows:

10 million units* - August 1974

50 million units* - December 2005

60 million units* - April 2008

87 million units* – March 2014

Honda’s Latest Electric Car Prototype Will Find Its Own Charging Station

If you own a house with a parking spot or a garage and you happen to own an electric car, the chances are you just drive up and plug in at the end of a long day, using your car’s on-board timer to charge at night time when electricity is cheaper.

Here at Transport Evolved, we’ve become fairly adept at pulling up and plugging in without a second thought. Our editorial team does after all have more than fifteen years of collective electric car ownership clocked up, and we’ve grown accustomed to the reassuring series of noises that accompanies successfully plugging in an electric car to charge. But we also understand that for some would-be electric car drivers, the thought of having to physically plug an electric car in every night to charge is just too much to bear.
Honda's self-driving technology will park and drive your Fit EV for you.

Honda’s self-driving technology will park and drive your Fit EV for you. (Screengrab, NHK World)

if you’re one such person, you’ll be pleased to read about Honda’s latest fusion of electric car and self-driving technologies: a car which not only parks itself, but charges itself too.

Following in the tyre tracks of  Toyota’s self-parking, inductively-charging Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid comes a Honda Fit EV fitted with low-speed autonomous driving technology and an inductive charging system. The same driving technology used last year to demonstrate valet parking capabilities for future autonomous parking lots, this particular version of the self-driving, self charging technology is designed to be used in a domestic environment, working in concert with cameras mounted on the owner’s home.

In operation, the system is pretty simple to use. The drive gets out of his or her car, and activates the self-parking feature using their smartphone or tablet PC. The car then uses image feeds from the building and its own rear-view camera to figure out where it is in real time, slowly backing itself into the parking space and aligning itself perfectly with the inductive charging pad.

Once parked, charging starts automatically.

Honda, which started tests of the system yesterday at a house just outside Tokyo, says the feature could be a great sale point for those who struggle with their parking, not to mention a hassle-free way to ensure maximum power transfer for wireless charging.

If you’re like us and wondering why anyone would want either a self-parking car or inductive charging at home, it’s worth remembering two very important facts which we assume helped influence Honda’s developmental process.

First of all, Japanese homes — and by association, Japanese garages — are fairly small by U.S. or even European standards. Instead of large two or more car garages, many Japanese homes have simple, small carports or garages, and in large urban areas even less. Developing a technology where the driver can exit the vehicle before parking means the car can fit in a far smaller space than it would with the driver still in the car, because there’s no need for the door to open if the driver is already safely outside the car.

Second, Japan, like the rest of the world, is facing an increasingly aged population. With the average driver age rising rather than falling, automakers are keen to do everything they can to develop driving aids which make it easier for seniors to continue to drive into old age. Self-parking — and self charging — is probably pretty high on that list.

Given the fact that Honda isn’t known for its love of electric cars, preferring hydrogen fuel cell technology instead, we’re doubtful you’ll see this self-driving, self charging technology in the marketplace any time soon.

But hey, if you’ve always had trouble parking, can’t be bothered to plug in, or just can’t fit in your garage, this could be the technology for you.

Honda Motors must fire Takata Corporation for faulty airbag systems

Imagine surviving a head-on collision just to be killed or grievously injured by a malfunctioning airbag system. Takata Corporation is responsible for 7 million airbag related recalls worldwide. Perhaps it's time for Honda to fire Takata Corporation in the name of safety and reputation.

Once again a Tokyo, Japan headquartered Takata Corporation malfunctioning airbagsystem has prompted Toyota to recall 2.3 million vehicles world-wide.Today we recieved advanced notification of a pending massive recall by Honda. Again, directly related to Takata’s faulty and possibly explosive airbag-system. We believe that it may be time for Honda to fire Takata.

No corporation is too big to fail and Takata Corporation, the Japan and Germany headquartered worldwide producer of steering wheels, interior trims, airbag systems and automotive electronics is not the exception to the rule. Last week Toyota, the world’s largest manufacturer of cars and trucks recalled an estimated 2.3 (worldwide) cars and trucks; 766,300 located in North America, due to the detection of an unspecified number of possibly lethal exploding airbag inflators.

As reported Saturday by Reuters and wallstreetcheatsheat.com, "according to an unidentified news source"(hate it) Honda will announce yet another massive airbag system related recall, the second in less than 12 months.

We don’t anticipate that the pending recall will include the totally redesigned 2015 Fit. But who know?

Unfortunately our favorite North American auto manufacturer has been plagued by numerous airbag-system recalls since 2008, all, thanks to faulty Takata Corporation components.

Honda, arguably the most consumer safety conscious automotive manufacturer on the planet, prides itself on manufacturing safeguards, consumer safety programs and a better safe-than-sorry recall policy.

Last weekend, we received several inquiries from our readers asking if their 2014Honda Accord, Civic or CR-Z would be included in Honda’s latest recall action ? As of this posting we have no idea as to what Honda brands and variants will be recalled. The Toyota recall affects both cars and trucks, reaching back to 2004. Hopefully this will not be the case with Honda.

Earlier in the year Torque News reported on an airbag-systems related recall involving the Honda Odyssey minivan. At that time(according to Honda) there had been no faulty airbag related injuries.

According to this site, Honda settled an exploding airbag inflator related lawsuit in 2013 for $3 million. Takata Corporation paid the settlement. Our research indicates that American Honda Motors, BMW, Chrysler, Mazda, Nissan and Mercedes Benz purchase airbag-systems from Takata Corporation. All have experienced airbag related product recalls.

So how is that possible and why is Takata the largest first- line suppliers of airbag systems in the world?

Product availability, manufacturing capacity and price.

Takata Plastics with 35,000 employees and manufacturing facilities worldwide is best positioned to provide the airbag system in your made in Mexico 2015 Fit. Or, manufactured in Ohio 2014 Honda Accord. And they are without exception the most cost effective(cheapest) supplier of the airbag-system.

Automotive manufacturing is a numbers $ game.

It may be time for Honda to consider letting Takata Corporation go; take the manufacturing and distributing of the airbag-system in-house if you must. We believe as Honda’s founder did. Honda has a longstanding and honored responsibility to provide safe and reliable transportation to the customer.

Ford and Honda predicted to see market-share increases

Ford and Honda will likely see the biggest increases in market share over the next three years, according to a financial industry report.

And even those may be slight, says the report from Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Research.

Helped by new vehicles like the 2015 Ford Mustang and 2015 Honda Fit, Ford and Honda will probably get increases in their market shares of about 0.5 percent – to 16.2 percent and 10.3 percent respectively, according to Bloomberg.

However, European automakers and Nissan could each lose 0.2 percent of share, falling to 8.3 percent and 7.8 percent.

The rest of the auto industry will remain steady, according to the Bank of America Merrill Lynch report cited by Bloomberg.

Ford and Honda will get bumps up in market share because they are expected to replace a larger percentage of their vehicles with new models, the report noted.

Meanwhile, the choices for car-buyers will continue to increase. The number of new models on the market will increase from 36 this year 48 in 2015 – a significant 33 percent jump, the report said.

Most of the new models are likely to be crossovers and trucks.

Honda honors suppliers of indirect products and services

Annual purchases exceed $1.4 billion in Ohio and Indiana

COLUMBUS — Honda has honored 25 suppliers that provide indirect products and services to five Honda automotive plants in Ohio and Indiana.

Driven by record auto production in North America in 2013, Honda also announced that its purchasing for Maintenance, Repair and Operational services in this region set a record of more than $1.4 billion for the fiscal year ending March 2014.

The MRO purchasing milestone came on the heels of record Honda auto production and parts purchasing in Ohio and Indiana in 2013 with the production of 976,361 automobiles at it three auto plants in Marysville and East Liberty and Greensburg, Ind.

MRO purchasing also supports operations of Honda’s engine plant in Anna and transmission plant in Russells Point.

Different from suppliers that provide parts and materials for the mass production of Honda products, the more than 5,000 MRO suppliers support Honda plants by providing a wide variety of equipment, products and services that support the manufacturing of automobiles, as well as their engines and transmissions.

These companies include local businesses as well as national companies, and many have grown along with the expansion of Honda’s automobile manufacturing in North America since Honda began U.S. auto production at the Marysville Auto Plant in 1982.

“With a host of pinnacle products coming to market next year, and with record production and sales targeted in the coming years, Honda will continue to transform its business by advancing technology in our products and manufacturing operations to maximize joy for the customer,” said Tom Lake, vice president for Purchasing and Cost Planning at Honda North America Inc.  “We thank our suppliers for the important role they continue to play in our success by bringing new ideas and value to our business.”

In 2013, Honda manufactured a record 1.78 million automobiles in North America, which led to the purchase of more than $25.5 billion in parts and materials in the region from 650 parts suppliers, also an all-time annual record.

Parts purchasing for Honda plants in Indiana and Ohio last year totaled $12.2 billion from suppliers in North America, including more than 200 in Ohio and Indiana.

More than 260 MRO suppliers for Honda plants in Ohio and Indiana attended the annual conference in Columbus for the awards ceremony, networking and professional breakout sessions.

Developed to recognize world-class business characteristics, the 25 suppliers were honored for achievements in the categories of Special Recognition, Outstanding Value, Performance Excellence and Supplier of the year.

“The purpose of the awards is to recognize suppliers that are bringing us value and helping Honda to advance our capabilities and deliver a better vehicle to our customers,” said Monica Oliverio, department manager of North American Indirect Procurement at Honda North America Inc. “We want our suppliers to truly grow with us as we continue to expand and advance our operations in North America.”

Bill Easdale, vice president of Honda of America Manufacturing Inc. added that the involvement of both indirect and parts suppliers is important as Honda’s North American operations take on new responsibilities to engineer and manufacture products for customers in this region and globally.

“In order to meet the responsibility of the lead role we have been asked to play in North America and to prepare for the next phase in our growth and evolution, we continue to invest in our business and our people,” Easdale said.  “We have a long-term commitment to Ohio and to all of our operations in North America, and this should give our suppliers the confidence to grow with us and to innovate with us, by bringing their best new ideas to Honda.”

HAM employs 10,000 Ohioans at the Marysville Auto Plant, East Liberty Auto Plant and Anna Engine Plant, along with operations that support its manufacturing.

With capacity to produce 440,000 automobiles per year, the Marysville plant currently is producing the Accord Sedan, Coupe and Hybrid models, and the all-new Acura TLX Sedan. The East Liberty plant produces the Honda CR-V and Crosstour, and the Acura RDX, with capacity to manufacture 240,000 automobiles per year.

Honda’s engine plant in Anna has capacity to produce more than 1 million V-6 and four-cylinder engines per year, primarily for Honda’s auto plants in Ohio, Indiana and Canada. In addition to production of these engines along with high-precision steel engine components, the Anna plant also manufactures sophisticated pulley components for Honda’s continuously variable transmissions .

HTM employs 1,125 associates and has capacity to produce more than 1 million automatic transmissions and CVTs per year. The plant also manufactures gear sets, four-wheel-drive systems and four-wheel-drive transfer components.

Honda established operations in America in 1959, and now employs more than 39,000 associates in its North American sales, R&D and manufacturing operations with a capital investment of more than $16.3 billion.

A fifth U.S. auto plant, the Performance Manufacturing Center, is under construction and next year will become the exclusive global production location for the next generation Acura NSX.

Honda operates major research and development centers in the U.S. that fully design, develop and engineer many of the products Honda produces in North America.

Scoop: Honda Facelifts 2015 Civic Hatch After Type R Concept

While continuing work on the much-anticipated Civic Type R sporting a brand-new 280hp+ 2.0-liter turbo mill that's expected to land in showrooms next year, Honda's engineers are also preparing a mid-cycle facelift for the regular versions of the European hatchback.

The cosmetic revisions were actually previewed on the Civic Type R Concept at this year's Geneva Motor Show in March, and in particular, the new front end with reshaped LED headlamps and grille, plus a redesigned hood and bumper.

Furthermore, for 2015, the facelifted Civic hatch gains newly designed side sills and a reworked rear end with different lights, bumper and the spoiler section of the tailgate.

We can't see if Honda made any changes to the interior design, but we wouldn't rule it out. Some upgrades are to be expected under the sheet metal as well.

Honda Amaze Sales Figure Touches 88,000 in India

The sales of Amaze, the compact sedan offering of Honda have touched 88,000 milestones in India, announced the company.

Launched in April last year, the Honda amaze, the Japanese auto maker's first offering in the diesel segment is a runaway success, claiming to have clocked a sales figure of 88,000 since its launch. The sub-4 meter sedan, also called 'family car' comes in both petrol and diesel options in the country. Amaze's petrol variant is powered by a 1.2-litre i-VTEC engine and gives a fuel efficiency of 18 kmpl.

The diesel variant, developed specifically for the Indian market, comes with a 1.5 i-DTEC engine. This gives a mileage of 25.8 kmpl, making it the most fuel-efficient diesel car in the Indian market. The Honda Amaze has also made it to the top three best selling compact sedan in the country.

"Living up its positioning in the market, Honda Amaze has certainly changed many lives with one car. Honda Amaze has been a game changer in its segment and has enabled HCIL to reach out to so many new customers, bringing them into the Honda fold. It is Honda's constant endeavor to provide freshness to our products and create excitement in the market," Motoroids quoted Jnaneswar Sen, Senior Vice President, Marketing & Sales, Honda Cars India Ltd.

In May, Honda posted growth of 17.8 percent in its domestic sales. The company sold 13,362 units in May 2014, as against the 11,342 units in May 2013. The company's family car Amaze's sales figure alone stood at 4,752 units for the month of May.

Honda, which has aggressive plans for the Indian market is also expected to launch its first MPV Mobilio and Jazz diesel in the country in coming months.

Honda Mobilio, a car which was first seen at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo has been rumoured for India launch quite some time now. Built on Honda's popular Brio hatchback platform, Honda's new Mobilio MPV will be offered in both petrol and diesel engines in the country. The petrol model of the car will pack 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol motor, which can churn out a power of 117bhp, and the diesel variant will come with 98bhp, 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel unit, which powers Honda's popular City and Amaze. The engine will come mated to a five-speed manual and CVT gearbox.

Moving on to the 2014 Jazz, the India-bound version of the latest Jazz is expected to come in both petrol and diesel engine variants. The petrol version of the Jazz is speculated to pack the same 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol engine that powers Amaze and Brio. It can generate a power of 87 bhp, with a torque of 110 Nm at 4,800 rpm. The diesel Jazz is likely to pack a 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel motor, which can pump in 100 PS of power and 200 Nm torque.

Honda plans to hire 1,000 people in India by end of FY’15

http://indianexpress.com/article/business/companies/honda-plans-to-hire-1000-people-in-india-by-end-of-fy15/

Japanese auto major Honda Motor Company plans to hire around 1,000 people in India as it looks to start a second production shift at its plant here by the end of this financial year.

The company’s wholly-owned subsidiary Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) is targeting an almost 50 per cent jump in sales to 2 lakh units in 2014-15.

“When we will start the second shift at the Tapukara facility, we will require more manpower. We think we will add 800-1,000 people in our overall headcount in India by the end of this fiscal,” HCIL Senior Vice President (Marketing and Sales) Jnaneswar Sen told PTI here.

HCIL currently has a total strength of around 9,000 employees through direct and indirect employment at its two facilities in Greater Noida and Tapukara, he added.

“Over 3,000 people are working at this moment in the Tapukara complex, of which 2,200 are direct staff of HCIL.

All the new people that we are planning to hire will be employed here,” Sen said.

The total installed capacity of the plant is 1.2 lakh units in two shifts and the company may also consider to ramp it up in the next 2-3 years as it targets sales of 3 lakh units a year by 2016-17, he added.

Honda Motor Company also plans to nearly double sourcing of auto components, including engine parts, from India to over Rs 800 crore during 2014-15.

The company has invested Rs 3,526 crore on the Tapukara plant, which also makes engines and exports components to South-East Asia, the UK and Latin America.

Witty Green Car Ads

This Honda Print Ad Shows That Its Green Car is the Greenest of All

There are a lot of autos out there that claim to have a green car design, but this clever Honda ad shows that its the greenest of them all.

With the Honda Accord Hybrid being recognized with a Canadian Green Car Award 2014, this ad ranks paint colors, staring with a light green shade called "Recycled Plastic." From here, each of the hues get a little darker with increasingly silly paint chip names like "Kale Milkshake," "Vegan Retreat" and "Hemp Pyjamas." At the very bottom is the greenest of all the greens, the Honda Accord Hybrid. The ad by Grip Limited is simple, effective and conveys its message with a good dose of humor too.

50 greenest brands? Ford, Toyota, Honda top list

The four greenest brand names belong to auto makers, led by Ford, while some of the largest brands — Google, Amazon, Facebook — don’t make the top 50 greenest list published Tuesday by Fortune.

Ford, which offers several hybrid models and one — the Focus Electric — that runs solely on battery power, took top honors from Toyota, which placed second this year followed by Honda and Nissan, according to the 50 Best Global Green Brands for 2014.

Also among the top 10 brands are four that make electronics, including Panasonic, Nokia, Sony and Dell. Samsung came in 11th while Intel placed 15th, Hewlett Packard 17th, Apple 21st, IBM 25th and Microsoft, 41st.

The list, first published in 2011, is drawn from Interbrand’s annual report ranking the world’s 100 most valuable brands, which was led by Apple and Google last year. It ranks them for greenness based on their environmental efforts, measured by consulting firm Deloitte, and the public’s perception of them, as seen by Interbrand’s survey of 10,000 people in large countries.

“The companies that made the list are moving beyond greenhouse gas emissions in the supply chain to focus on waste and water use up and down the value chain,” Will Sarni, a consultant at Deloitte, told Fortune.

The two brands that improved the most from last year, each rising 14 places, were Swedish home furnishings chain IKEA, now 19th, and Spanish clothing retailer Zara, now 34th. IKEA is installing electric car charging stations at more of its U.S. stores while Zara is using organic cotton and ecological fabrics.

The list also posts a score for each brand that indicates the gap between its performance and perception scores. Panasonic has a high positive gap score that suggests it’s doing more than it’s getting credit for. In contrast, IKEA and Apple have negative gap scores.

“While the company is doing more to improve its environmental performance, consumers believe that Apple is greener than it actually is,” writes Fortune‘s Brian Dumaine.

Also posting negative gap scores (followed by ranking) are: Danone (9), Coca-Cola (20), General Electric (25), Nike (29), Pepsi (30), Chevrolet (32), Starbucks (37), Kellogg’s (38), Microsoft (41), McDonald’s (43), Santander (44), Shell (47) Colgate (48) and Disney (49.)

Honda vows to improve personal electronic connectivity on latest J.D Power IQS Poll news

In Honda’s latest weekly Rearview report V.P. John Mendel makes an interesting observation. Torque News takes a closer look.

No bones about it, we’re die-hard Acura, Honda fans. As eagerly relayed countless times in earlier articles, we state adamantly that American Honda Motor Company is the driving force behind today’s automotive renaissance; with one caveat. The maker of the number one selling compact and mid size sedan in North America is experiencing a glitch or two in personal electronic connectivity.

When reading between the lines of John Mendel’s response to Honda’s lambasting at the hands of new owners participating in the latest J.D. Power Initial Quality Study, Honda largely failed to make the top tier as voted by those polled. John was most gracious in his response, stating:

"This week's announcement of J.D. Power and Associates annual Initial Quality Study reflected some opportunities for improvements in the design and function of in-vehicle connectivity and telematics systems. We offer cutting-edge capabilities that we will continue to make even more intuitive, even as customers become increasingly comfortable with the technology and the interface.” said John.

Mr Mendel was perhaps a bit more gracious in deflecting the unanticipated blow than we were. We don’t like Polls. We find the information gleaned from an often ‘narrowed’ search demographic to be (sometimes) misleading and at times, self serving. However, in this case, the J.D. Power IQS Poll is restricted to Honda buyers that have recently purchased (90 days) Honda cars and light trucks.

Admittedly not a Gen-Y techi, this reporter found the touch screen in the 2015 Fit to be easily accessed, well placed and fun to play with. However, without instruction from the dealer(I) we had no idea as to its handsfree communications capabilities. We’ve read an article or two circulating the Web stating that Honda has missed the mark on connectivity and telematics; Perhaps.

In other words, your IPhone 5 or Samsung Galaxy 4 may not be seamlessly compatible(opinion) with the 2014 Accord Hybrid, Civic Si or the discontinued Ridgeline Limited Edition light truck. Or, you may experience a mild learning curve in its operation.

http://www.cnet.com/news/hondas-new-2015-civic-type-r-could-be-its-fastest-and-most-furious/

Honda's 2015 Civic Type R could be its fastest and most furious

Fans of Honda's Type R are getting excited over the next iteration of the company's high performance car. Here's why.

Honda UK put up a teaser mini-site for the new 2015 Honda Civic Type R a couple of days back, and stirred the Honda community into a fever pitch.

For Honda and its fans, Type R represents its "racing spirit," which is the company's corporate philosophy of using motorsport to drive innovation and foster teamwork. Honda's a company with a rich racing heritage, spanning almost half a century at the highest echelons of motorsport. The Civic iteration of Type R has always been the mainstay of the Type R badge, the other series either one-offs (like the NSX-R) or discontinued (as with the Integra-R).

Customers in Europe, Australia, Japan and many countries in Asia have been enjoying Type R Hondas but the US has never had an officially imported model, partly because of the cost of homologating the vehicles to comply with US regulations. Hopefully, efforts to push Honda USA to officially bring in the car will bear fruit.

Honda Type Rs are very special vehicles and are always announced to great acclaim by the automotive community, and the 2015 Honda Civic Type R is no exception. Announced way back in 2012, and proudly displayed during the Geneva Motor Show 2014 earlier this year, the CTR was promised by no less than the President and CEO of Honda, Takanobu Ito, to be the fastest front-wheel-drive car in the Nurburgring.

Originally rumoured to be working on a naturally aspirated 220HP Civic Type R in 2014, Honda was forced back to the drawing boards to design a higher performance car, delaying the release to 2015.

The gestation period has been relatively long -- possibly because of the increasing power levels and rapidly dropping lap times of its competitors, including the Volkswagen Golf, Scirocco R, Seat Leon Cupra, and other super-hot-hatches from Ford and Chinese manufacturer MG. It was made even harder as the Renaultsport Megane 275 Trophy-R raised the bar further by posting a 7:54.36 lap record, the fastest time to date for a front wheel drive car.

To fulfil Ito's promise, the 2015 Honda Civic Type R would have to be a really special car. After almost a year of hitting the drawing boards again, the new 2015 CTR promises to be even more special if for just one reason -- it will be the first factory-turbocharged performance vehicle in Honda's history.

Notorious for not offering turbocharged performance cars and instead relying on incredibly high revving engines and fancy variable valve timing mechanisms like its famous VTEC system to generate high power outputs, Honda has prided itself in making some of the world's best naturally aspirated engines, with near instantaneous throttle response that many drivers consider essential for an exhilarating driving experience.

Honda's reluctance to go the turbo route despite all of its competitors doing so most definitely stems from its concerns that turbocharging would blunt the prized characteristics of Honda performance engines. Even so, with emissions and fuel economy targets being increasingly more demanding, Honda announced a trio of turbocharged engines late in 2013, the crown jewel being the CTR's two-litre four-cylinder turbo engine with VTEC variable valve timing.

With this new CTR engine, Honda's engineers seem to have achieved turbocharging while still preserving the VTEC experience.

"Creating a high output turbocharged engine is relatively easy, but our aim is to retain the VTEC characteristics, so it's high revving, with great responses and easy to control performance," said Patrik Ponec, a product planner at Honda in an interview with CAR magazine, UK.

This achievement must have been something great -- even for a typically understated Japanese company, Honda has made unusually bold claims for the 2015 CTR.

"The Civic Type R concept is not a high performance road car, it's a racing car for the road," proclaims Masaru Hasagawa, the chief stylist in a video.

Fans who heard the news of Honda's first turbocharged performance engine were pretty excited as well.

"Suddenly I feel alive again, like there is a purpose in life," said Patrick Lee, a former Honda workshop owner and mechanic in the US and now residing in Singapore. "But I'm afraid of the insurance premiums," he quipped.

"Since the days of the B20 turbo, I dreamt of this day. That was 15 years ago," said another fan, referring to the craze in the 1990s to build cars which could sprint a quarter mile in less than 10 seconds, using nitrous, turbocharging or any combination of techniques, and the inspiration of action film "The Fast and the Furious."

While the US waits for Honda's decision, the first deliveries of the powerful and fast Honda Civic Type R will hit the rest of the world soon. Even if it doesn't beat the Renault's Nurburgring record, Honda's devoted fans have something to look forward to after a two-year wait.

Honda Commercial Draws Ire With ‘Shouldn’t Be Driving’ Narcolepsy Joke

A Gen Y-aimed commercial was set to private on YouTube following complaints by people with the condition.

A spokeswoman for Honda North America responded with the following comment, apologizing for the narcolepsy joke and saying the company will not air the ad with the reference:

“In a series of ads for the 2015 Honda Fit, the company attempted to demonstrate how the Fit answers the needs of the customer in a very direct, yet humorous way.  One ad in particular addressed narcolepsy in a manner that is insensitive. We have heard from those with the disorder and understand their concerns with our positioning of narcolepsy within the ad.

“To that end, Honda has pulled the ad from its YouTube channel and will not air the ‘Synth in Seattleites’ ad with any reference to narcolepsy on television. We apologize to those who are living with and managing this disorder each day. Please know that Honda did not intend to hurt those affected by the condition.”

Original Story:

Narcolepsy advocates are angry over a new commercial from American Honda Motor Company Inc. (NYSE:HMC) that makes a joke out of the neurological disorder and suggests people who suffer from it don’t belong behind the wheel.

The commercial is part of Honda’s new “Fit for You” campaign, which is aimed at making the brand more appealing to millennials. The spot in question features a montage of hip young consumers discussing various aspects of the 2015 Honda Fit. In one scene, a man says, “I suffer from a condition called narc ...” and then suddenly dozes off. Afterward, the commercial’s narrator responds, “You probably shouldn’t be driving.”

Narcolepsy is a chronic disorder that involves poor control of sleep-wake cycles. Its main features are fatigue and cataplexy (abrupt muscle weakness triggered by a strong emotion), but it's also associated with sudden sleep attacks.

The Honda commercial attracted a number of angry comments over the weekend after it was uploaded to YouTube. The video has since been set to “private” (meaning it is still online but not viewable by the public), but the criticism continued Monday on various social media networks, including the Honda Facebook page.

“I have narcolepsy and I drive,” one person wrote. “Making fun of an autoimmune condition that you obviously know absolutely nothing about is a very poor way to sell a vehicle.”

“Hey, Honda, who else isn’t fit for your Fit beside people with narcolepsy?” wrote another person.

Julie Flygare, a narcolepsy sufferer and author of the book “Wide Awake and Dreaming: A Memoir of Narcolepsy,” launched a petition on Change.org calling on Honda to remove the ad, saying narcolepsy sufferers are subject to bullying, ridicule and discrimination due to such “inaccurate, unoriginal” characterizations. “While I can forgive individuals for having misconceptions, I cannot forgive Honda’s marketing team who has the resources to learn about their customer base before launching a major media campaign,” Flygare wrote.

Flygare points out in her petition that many people with the condition drive successfully and legally when properly treated.

A writer for the nonprofit group Wake Up Narcolepsy also criticized the ad, saying in a blog post that it “disrespects the 200,000 Americans struggling with this lifelong, incurable sleep disease.”

Honda’s 30-second commercial, titled “Synth and Seattleites,” was to begin airing on television this week, according to press materials. A representative for Honda North America didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the criticism.

Honda pips Maruti Suzuki from No.1 spot in mileage; no model of Maruti in top 15

If you are planning to buy a car and fuel efficiency is what you are looking for, consider Honda. Honda Car's newest generation City is the least thirsty among the cars manufactured and sold in India, followed by Amaze, another sedan from the Japanese auto maker. Local market leader Maruti Suzuki doesn't have any of its models on the list of the top 15 fuel-efficient cars that ET has prepared based on data announced by auto makers.
The numbers claimed by the companies were achieved in ideal road-test conditions and may vary in the real world bumper-to-bumper traffic. Fuel-efficiency is a factor that alone can swing purchase decisions in India. It is critical for the success of products and companies have been investing huge amounts in new technologies to deliver more distance to every litre of fuel.

Honda's diesel-powered City gives 26 kilometres to a litre. Analysts say fuel efficiency is a key reason for the success of the recently launched fourth-generation City, with customers waiting for about four months to take delivery. Powered by an all-new 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine, City's mileage claim is certified by Automotive Research Association of India. The diesel version of the Amaze delivers 25.8 kms.

"As a latecomer to the diesel market, we had set the goal of delivering highest mileage. We were able to achieve it by innovation that is also in line with Honda's global philosophy to make environment-friendly and mileageconscious cars," said Jnaneswar Sen, Honda's senior vice-president of marketing and sales.

Honda's sales in India rose 83% from a year earlier to 1.34 lakh cars in the year ended March 2014. For this performance at a time when the overall car market shrank, analysts cite its success with diesel — the heavier fuel which is still lighter on pocket — and fuel efficiency.

While Honda became the mileage leader due to what it calls the "Earth dreams" technology launched in diesel, Maruti Suzuki faltered after being the No.1 in fuel efficiency for more than a decade with the Alto small car. Currently, its most fuel-efficient car, the DZire compact sedan, delivers 23.4 km to a litre of diesel and is at the 19th spot according to data collated by ET.

The company's executives say it has been continuously improving fuel efficiency. "Maruti Suzuki has shown significant improvements in fuel economy of both gasoline and diesel models by focused initiative like light weighting, powertrain improvements, etc," a spokesperson said. Maruti Suzuki's new models deliver higher mileage than their predecessors.

For instance, the new diesel DZire delivers 23.4 kms a litre, compared with 21.7 kms earlier, while the new Alto 800 runs 22.7 kms, compared with 19.7 kms earlier. And, despite the higher mileage claims of its rivals, Maruti Suzuki's cars continue to outnumber competition in sales. Also, while the mileage chart is led by cars that run on diesel, the market leader is strong on petrol-fueled small cars which still sell more numbers.

With increasing fuel prices coupled with narrowing diesel and petrol pricing gap, today's buyer is giving fuel efficiency more weight than total ownership cost, says Amit Kaushik, principal analyst, autos, at consultancy firm IHS Automotive. "We believe that manufacturers are extensively using turbo-chargers and down-sizing engines to make them more fuel efficient."

According to latest data, car and utility vehicles sold in India deliver an average of around 16 kms a litre, an improvement of about 1.5 km in five years. All carmakers voluntary disclose mileage ratings, but the government is bringing in new fuel-efficiency guidelines under which all cars and SUVs will have to give at least 18.2 kms to a litre from April 2016.

Honda says it will extend the warranty coverage on some of its 2006-2013 Honda Civic sedans and coupes, for problems with chalking and cracking.

The paint warranty of some of the Civic's available paint colors will now be 7 years with no mileage limit. Honda says on affected vehicles, the paint on the roof and leading edge of the front fenders may crack or have a chalky or cloudy appearance. Additionally, the roof, trunk, upper portions of the quarter panel and upper portions of the doors could also display this same chalky or cloudy appearance.

This bulletin will expire on 9-30-14 for 2006-2008 vehicles.

This warranty extension does not cover any other paint issues like rock chips, scratches, bird droppings, tree sap, acid rain damage, exterior rust, etc. Only factory applied paint is eligible for the warranty extension. Finally, this warranty extension does not apply to a vehicle that has been declared as a total loss or sold for salvage by a financial institution or insurer, or has a branded or similar title under any state's law.

The fix

On affected vehicles, Honda dealers will inspect the paint and if the condition is observed, will repaint the affected areas entirely.

If a vehicle falls into the model and year category listed, is painted one of the colors outlined, and displays paint cracking, or a chalky or cloudy appearance, it should be inspected by a local dealer for paint condition.

Electronics cause trouble for Acura in survey
Honda’s luxury brand tumbles from sixth to 25th in J.D. Power initial-quality study

New-car quality has slipped a bit, largely because of problems with on-board electronics, according to the latest J.D. Power and Associates initial-quality study.

Hyundai and General Motors were the standouts in the latest rankings, while Honda and Acura saw their scores fall.

Hyundai’s showing is indicative of a shift from a few years ago when Toyota and Honda were often at or near the top of just about every segment, said David Sargent, vice president of global automotive for the research group.

“There is much more parity in terms of quality,” he said at a news conference in Detroit.

Hyundai had five vehicles that were the best in their segment, behind only GM, which had six. Chevrolet was GM’s top-performing brand.

The annual report, with results issued yesterday, is based on survey responses of buyers of 2014 model-year vehicles, looking at the number of problems in the first 90 days of ownership. The scores are based on the number of problems per 100 vehicles, so the goal is a low score.

The study showed an overall increase in the average number of problems, which J.D. Power says is largely due to the complexity of on-board electronics.

Among the leading culprits are voice-recognition systems and software that connects the owners’ cellphone to the vehicle.

Problems with electronics hurt the Acura MDX, a newly redesigned model that almost single-handedly brought down Acura’s score, said Renee Stephens, vice president of U.S. auto quality for J.D. Power.

Acura, which is Honda’s luxury brand, tumbled down the list to No. 25 with 131 points, down from sixth last year with 102 points.

On the positive side, Acura had two of the highest-ranked vehicles in the “compact premium car” category: the TL and the ILX. The segment leader was the Lexus ES.

The Honda brand ranked ninth with 108 points, down from last year when it ranked eighth with 103 points.

“On the whole, they went backward a little, but there wasn’t much different or telling,” Stephens said of Honda. “They’ve always performed fairly well.”

Honda’s Ridgeline was the best-scoring midsize pickup truck. The Civic was a runner-up in the compact car category, behind the Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla.

“Honda is committed to offering its customers the long-term durability, quality and reliability that are hallmarks of the brand,” said Honda spokesman Chris Martin in a statement.

He said Honda deployed an array of new technologies in recent years that “often require time to understand and fully appreciate,” and he expects that those systems “will garner greater market understanding and acceptance over time.”

The initial-quality survey is one of the most closely watched ratings for automakers, with the companies dissecting the results and often changing their manufacturing processes in the hope of improving their scores.

The brand with the best score was Porsche with 74. The top non-luxury brand, and No. 4 brand overall, was Hyundai, 94.

Among the segment winners were the Chevrolet Malibu, best midsize car; the Hyundai Accent, best small car; and the Ford F-150 LD, best light-duty pickup.

At the bottom of the rankings was Fiat with 206 points, up from 161. The change was largely because of problems with the 500L, which is a larger version of the flagship 500.

Honda Accord 2014 Used Engines Now for Sale in 2.4 Size Online by Motor Retailer

Honda Accord used engines for 2014 vehicles are now included in 2.4 size for sale by the Got Engines company online. This preowned inventory is promoted along with a sale price.

Lexington, KY (PRWEB) June 24, 2014

Accord remains a top selling brand for the Honda Motor Corporation in the U.S. market and new technologies are introduced annually for consumers. The Got Engines company is one second hand source now selling Honda Accord 2014 used engines in 2.4 size to the public as one alternative to junkyard inventory.

The recently acquired use inventory that is being promoted nationally in 2.4 displacements is offering and affordable outlet for average car owners to buy on the Internet. Consumers can now purchase the 2.4 VTEC enabled motors through the updated preowned inventory throughout this year.

"We've placed more emphasis on providing more DOHC motors with 2.0, 2.4 and 3.0 displacements to reach a new market of engine buyers who prefer the performance standards," a Got Engines company rep said.

The Accord used motors for sale that are currently promoted on the front page of the GotEngines.com website have been upgraded with a new protection policy. A term of warranty protection for a three-year duration is now in effect for all processed sales of VTEC or other brands of Honda motors.

"The warranty terms that we've added to our complete inventory are a direct benefit to the public when buying a motor for a simple installation or resale to a third party," said the rep.

The Got Engines company has changed the way that prices are delivered to consumers upon request online. A modified quotation tool is now delivering any VTEC or non-VTEC motor price in the Honda division. This new system is completely accessible on the company website and will remain active going forward.

http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2014/06/24/112020-honda-civic-type-r-teaser-campaign-is-r-rated.html

Honda Civic Type R Teaser Campaign is R-Rated!

June 24, 2014: Honda (UK) has launched a new teaser campaign to introduce the forthcoming Civic Type R, as the anticipation continues to build ahead of the car’s European launch in 2015. Dubbed by the design team as a ‘racing car for the road’, the new model promises to be the most extreme Type R yet, with bold and aggressive styling reflecting the strong performance characteristics for which the marque is renowned.

The campaign leads on the theme of ‘R-rated’, a reference to the experience the car will deliver and the strong heritage of the red ‘R’ badge; born from Honda’s racing spirit and only ever appearing on a Type R. Viewers are advised to use their discretion when looking at this ‘Honda restricted content’ on YouTube.

The campaign kicks off with the sixty second film, ‘Disruption’. We open on a sunny suburban street. A family is packing a picnic into the boot of their car. Everything is happy and jolly, including the music. It’s the most generic car film you’ve ever seen. Suddenly, the picture distorts and pixelates and the Honda R-Rated advisory flickers up on screen, as though someone just hijacked the broadcast. We see the Honda R-rated advisory notice appear. The warning disappears into black.

The mood shifts and everything becomes R-rated. We see a man with the red ‘R’ in his left eye looking out with binoculars over a futuristic neon cityscape as storm clouds brew in the sky. Predator wolves linger in an abandoned warehouse, we see their evil bioluminescent eyes from a distance as a heavily tattooed man confronts them, full of rage. A second man wearing a geometric golden mask then walks down a fluorescent lit dark hallway, draws back a large hammer before slamming it into the bust of a Greek statue.

As we build to a climax a bolt of lightning strikes a speed camera, which bursts into flames. A woman in a motorcycle helmet slams a samurai sword into a spinning geometric shape in the middle of a dark room. Just before the blade hits, we see the ‘R’ image within the shape’s surface. The shape shatters into a million pieces.

We end with the Type R looming against the backdrop of a dramatic sky, the car’s red parking lights illuminated, giving it an ominous look. Lightning strikes, and we see an iconic outline and quick flash of the car before it returns to dark. The roar of the engine revving brings things fittingly to a close.

Olivia Dunn, Head of Marketing for Honda (UK) comments: “The new Type R promises to be the most extreme yet, it’s born from racing and it pushes the boundaries. This new campaign encompasses this spirit perfectly, with Disruption the ideal curtain raiser in setting the energy and adrenaline levels very high.”

Emily Samways, Business Director for Karmarama comments: “This new campaign is something of a diversion from Honda in tone, but that’s what the Type R badge commands. Just the name of the launch film says it all about the impact this landmark car will have when it arrives early next year.”

The key strapline of the campaign is ‘We R Back’, a nod to both the rebirth of the Type R and the huge 2015 which Honda is looking forward to with its return to Formula 1 and an all new version of the NSX supercar.

The new Honda Civic Type R will arrive in UK dealerships in 2015. The Type R Concept model makes its UK debut on the Honda stand at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, which runs from Thursday 26th to Sunday 29th June.

Honda claims overall win, production electric vehicle record at Pikes Peak

Romain Dumas is overall winner; Roy Richards drives Honda Fit EV to class win

The 2014 Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb resulted in two more Pikes Peak titles for Honda, as four Honda drivers and riders earned top-five class finishes in Sunday's 12.42-mile trek up the mountain.

The Honda effort was highlighted by Romain Dumas, who scored his first overall Pikes Peak title. Roy Richards also came up big in his Honda Fit EV, winning the Electric Production class with a record run of 12 minutes, 55.591 seconds.

"After [finishing 2nd in] 2012, the target was to win one," Dumas said. "This year, we did a perfect job, the [Honda engine] was running good and we prepared how we should. I knew I was running smoothly, so I didn't want to take any risks. It was a clear run. It was not incredible, but it was enough to win and that was the target anyway. We are very happy, and this is a big win for the team.'

This year marked the 13th consecutive year that a Honda-powered vehicle has won at least one class in the Pikes Peak event.

"I am very pleased with the Fit EV's performance this year," Richards said. "We knew from last year's practice times that the Fit EV had a shot at the record, but weather spoiled our run. Building on the knowledge gained from last year, our team refined the suspension settings and did additional weight reduction. The results were better than we expected with a new record for the production EV class."

Associates from American Honda Motor Co., Inc., Honda Performance Development (HPD), Honda North America and Honda R&D combined to field six vehicles for Honda associates in this year's race. With five of the six Honda drivers having previously competed at Pikes Peak, each of the six vehicles made successful runs to the 14,115-foot Pikes Peak summit.

Honda provided power for Dumas in his own Norma RD Limited prototype chassis entry in the Unlimited class. Starting first, Dumas pushed his Honda powerplant to a race-winning time of 9:05.801 to claim his first race win and the first overall Pikes Peak victory for a Honda-powered car.

James Robinson posted the fastest time of the six Honda associate-driven vehicles in his Acura Pikes Peak NSX, finishing sixth in the Open Class with a time of 11:09.134. Zach Jacobs rode his Honda CBR600RR throughout the course's 156 turns in 11:11.885 to place fifth in the Middleweight motorcycle class, while Sage Marie's effort of 11:59.095 in his Honda S2000 was good for fourth in the Time Attack 2 class.

Keith Steidl placed sixth in the quad class with a time of 12:31.245, while the only rookie in the 2014 class, Corey Taguchi, placed fourth in the Exhibition standings after posting a time of 14:26.438 in his Honda Fit.

http://www.autonews.com/article/20140628/GLOBAL03/306289998/honda-trips-in-china-with-mistake-accord

Honda trips in China with 'mistake' Accord

TOKYO -- Honda Motor Co. was so confident the new Accord would be a superstar in China last year that it released an exclusive 3-liter version with a flashy grille and a price tag to rival Volkswagen AG's Audi A4 luxury sedan.

The results weren't so stellar.

Deliveries of the vehicle that Honda predicted would drive its revival in the world's largest automobile market fell 37 percent in the first five months of this year.

The Accord -- which until three years ago was the top-selling midsized sedan in China -- dropped to as low as No. 9, in April, as VW's Passat and Magotan models took the top slots.

In late February, Honda pushed out a stripped-down Accord that started at about 180,000 yuan ($29,000), compared with more than 200,000 for earlier versions. Sales still sagged. \

"We've already lost faith in it," said Liu Yefei, who runs a Honda dealership in Shanghai. "Honda tried to focus on the higher-end version from the beginning, but they underestimated people's desire for German cars."

The Accord's struggles illustrate the challenges Japanese automakers face nearly two years after Chinese protesters torched Honda and Toyota Motor Corp. dealerships and damaged Japanese-branded cars amid a territorial dispute.

While sales have rebounded among lower-priced Japanese cars, German brands have strengthened their position among high-end models.

Rows of Audis

German cars enjoy a unique cachet in China, where it's common to see rows of black Audis -- China's top-selling premium brand -- parked outside government agencies or state-run enterprises' offices.

As German brands have introduced more affordable models, the sales of mid-sized Japanese sedans have slid further, dealing a blow to Japanese makers that have counted on mid-sized sedans to be big moneymakers in China.

"Accord is having a tough time being sandwiched by premium brands and the lower-end brands," said Koji Endo, a Tokyo-based analyst with Advanced Research Japan.

Because the Accord is one of the most profitable models in China, he said, its slump could affect Honda's earnings.

"To make money, they have to sell more Accords," he said.

Honda spokeswoman Akemi Ando said the Accord models recently introduced in China were "a bit expensive" at first. "With the launch of the cheaper 2-liter version, you will see our sales rebounding in the next one or two months," she said by telephone.
The Accord's struggles illustrate the challenges Japanese automakers face nearly two years after Chinese protesters torched Honda and Toyota dealerships and damaged Japanese-branded cars amid a territorial dispute.

Misjudging customers

Seiji Kuraishi, the managing officer for Honda's China business, said in April that the company had sought to compete with European and U.S. carmakers.

"We realized it was a mistake that we didn't understand customer needs well and didn't have anything below 200,000 yuan," Kuraishi said.

Overall, Honda's sales in China rose 11 percent in the first five months of the year, about in line with overall auto-sales growth in the country, powered largely by less-expensive models.

Honda's growth pace trailed that of Toyota and Nissan, and lagged Honda's own 19 percent full-year growth target. China sales are expected to make up 19 percent of Honda's global sales this year.

Five-year fall

Five years ago, the Accord, Toyota Camry and Nissan Motor Co.'s Altima -- called the Teana in China -- represented four of every 10 midsized sedans sold there, according to LMC Automotive.

By last year, as rivals like the Volkswagen Passat came on strong, the combined share fell to about two in 10. The Accord's market share fell to 6 percent last year, from 18 percent in 2008. Over the same period, the Camry's share declined to 9 percent from 16 percent. Nissan's Teana has a 6 percent share, down from 10 percent in 2010 and 2011.

"For people with a budget of 200,000 yuan, why would they stick with the Japanese when there are so many other options?" said Zhu Bin, a Shanghai-based analyst for LMC.

This year, Audi began selling its basic A3 for just below 200,000 yuan. Previously, only Audi's smaller A1 had been priced there. Zheng Fangbing, a 28-year-old Beijing resident who works for a securities brokerage, said price wasn't a factor when she chose a 260,000-yuan A4 over an Accord in February.

Beyond flash

"We chose Audi because the brand appears more 'gao da shang'," said Zheng, using slang that implies high quality rather than just a flashy brand name. "Also, we were afraid that if we buy Japanese, it would be smashed if anti-Japan protests broke out again."

When Honda brought the ninth-generation Accord to China last year, the company expressed confidence it could compete with the A4 and the VW Passat.

The new Accord would be a "blockbuster," Yu Liang, Guangqi Honda's deputy general manager, said at the time of the September rollout.

"It will become a superstar and a source to power Guangqi Honda's strong revival," Yu said, according to a news release.

The initial 2-liter version Honda introduced started at 206,800 yuan, exceeding the Camry's 180,000 yuan starting price and the Teana's 190,000 yuan. The 3-liter variant Honda unveiled for the China market went for as much as 298,000 yuan.

Honda put most of its focus on marketing an Accord with a 2.4-liter engine that WardsAuto selected as one of the best 10 last year.

Growth goals

In late February, Honda introduced a 2-liter Accord priced more in line with its Japanese peers. As of April, the latest month for which comparisons are available, 20,600 Accords had sold, compared with 53,200 Camrys and 40,900 Audi A4s. VW's Passat and Magotan had deliveries of 99,300 and 74,900, respectively.

Honda maintains its goal of selling 900,000 cars this year and doubling annual sales in China to 1.3 million units in the three years through 2015. It plans to introduce 12 new models during that time. Much of that will depend on the success of more affordable models such as the new Crider compact sedan and the Fit, introduced in late May.

Honda is seeking to regroup against the backdrop of a two-year diplomatic freeze that began after the Japanese government purchased three of the five disputed Senkaku, or Diaoyu, islands in the East China Sea. The dispute still colors consumers' attitudes about Japanese brands, said Liu, the Shanghai Honda dealer.

"This is not reflected on the surface anymore," Liu said. "But it affects people's decision when they choose a brand and this impact won't go away easily."

Jury Issues $55M Verdict Against Honda After Crash

A jury ordered Honda Motor Co. to pay $55.3 million for a rollover accident that left a Pennsylvania man paralyzed, but the car company said Friday it would appeal.

Lawyers for Carlos Martinez, 57, of York, argued during a nine-day trial that a faulty seat belt design in his Acura Integra caused the permanent injuries he suffered in 2010.

Martinez was driving to work in suburban Baltimore when a tire blew out and he lost control of the car, said his attorney, Stewart Eisenberg. The seat belt failed to prevent Martinez's head from hitting the roof of the car as it rolled over, the lawyer said.

Acura is a division of Honda. A spokesman for the company denied any problems with the "proven restraint system used by virtually every manufacturer."

"The evidence here clearly established that there is no vehicle-based defect that caused Mr. Martinez's injuries," Honda spokesman Chris Martin said in an emailed statement.

Eisenberg contended Honda knew such an injury was possible based on seat belt testing it conducted in 1992.

Damages awarded by the Philadelphia jury on Thursday include money for pain and suffering, future medical expenses, loss of consortium and loss of earnings. Martinez, a married father of four, worked in construction as a glazier but is now paralyzed from the chest down.

"All of a sudden their life is destroyed by this accident," said Eisenberg.

Martinez's nephew, a passenger in the car, was wearing his seatbelt but was not injured, Eisenberg said.

About Honda Honda established operations in America in 1959, and now employs more than 39,000 associates in its North American sales, R&D and manufacturing operations with a capital investment of more than $16.3 billion.

Based on its longstanding commitment to "build products close to the customer" Honda operates 16 major manufacturing facilities in North America, producing a wide range of Honda and Acura automobiles, automobile engines and transmissions, Honda all-terrain vehicles, power equipment products such as lawn mowers, mini-tillers and general purpose engines, and the HondaJet light jet, using domestic and globally sourced parts.

Eight Honda auto plants in the region, including four in the U.S., have the capacity to produce 1.92 million automobiles each year. In 2013, 94 percent of the Honda and Acura automobiles sold in the U.S. were produced in North America. Those plants today manufacture 11 different models, including four passenger cars and seven light trucks.

A fifth U.S. auto plant, the Performance Manufacturing Center, is under construction in Marysville, Ohio, and next year will become the exclusive global production location for the next generation Acura NSX.

Honda operates major research and development centers in the U.S. that fully design, develop and engineer many of the products Honda produces in North America.

Toyota And Honda Join Forces With Government For Fuel Cell Dominance

With Toyota lunching a fuel cell vehicle next March, Honda and the government jumped on board in order for Japan to become the leading force behind hydrogen power in the next 20-30 years.

After Toyota and Honda began leasing fuel cell-powered cars in Japan 12 years ago, the project came to a halt due to technological difficulties and bold predictions. But things have changed since then. And while Audi is working on synthetic fuels, the Japanese are betting on fuel cells big time.

Reuters reports that while Toyota's hydrogen car will cost about $68,600 when it goes on sale in Japan in March, both the carmakers and the government are determined to push prices down to an average of about $20,000 by 2025.

According to Ryuichiro Inoue, a professor at Tokyo City University and an expert on the auto industry, this is going to be a long-term investment:

Even after 10 years, fuel cell cars are likely to be less than 10 percent of the Japanese market. This isn't a strategy to talk about for the next 10 years, but for the next 20 to 30 years.

Toyota only expects tens of thousands of fuel cell cars to be sold annually a decade from now, but looking back at the first Prius, Managing Officer Satoshi Ogiso and Executive Vice-President Mitsuhisa Kato had this to say:

Unless you are willing to accept losses initially, it's not possible to increase sales.

This is the start of a long challenge to make hydrogen a standard feature in society and to make the fuel-cell vehicle an ordinary automobile

Brave statements indeed. With the Japanese premier of Toyota's car soon to be followed by US and European sales, the Japanese government pushing for ample subsidies and tax breaks while also aiming to create 100 hydrogen fuel stations by end-March 2016 in urban areas.

With Hyundai and Daimler also spending fortunes on hydrogen technology, can this be Japan's next big development that changes mobility forever?

If it's big in Japan, who knows? After all, who wouldn't want a zero emission vehicle with a massive range and quicker refills than what a battery powered car can ever offer?

Honda Accord and CR-V diesel India launch in 2015

Just when everybody thought that Honda Cars India will continue concentrating on entry level cars, and forget about their DNA-driven performance luxury cars, it has now emerged that they are planning to launch new Accord and CR-V with 1.6l diesel engine next year.

Honda India discontinued Accord in 2013 end. A reason was never stated, but it is believed that declining sales, and the launch of new cars in the segment was the culprit. Also, some buyers were now getting attracted to the luxury brands, which had started offering hatchbacks in the same price segment. All this, and production constraint after the launch of Amaze diesel, led to Honda discontinuing Accord in India.

But as the segment is there to grow, Honda would definitely not want to miss the chance on being present in the segment. With production capacity now sorted, and they reportedly planning on a third plant, it seems like 2015 is the year when Honda will re-launch Accord in India.

The new Accord will come with new naturally aspirated 2.4l petrol engine generating 177 bhp. This engine will be more responsive and economical as compared to the previous one. Apart from this, 2015 Accord will also feature electric power steering, increased cabin space, redesigned interiors, and a stronger chassis. A diesel engine will also be on offer, but this will be launched later.

The new 1.6l diesel engine of Honda is expected to make India debut in the CR-V next year. Honda 1.6l iDTEC is perfect for bigger cars, the size of Accord, Civic, and CR-V. It generates 118 hp power and 300 Nm torque.

Both these launches are yet to be confirmed from Honda. What they have confirmed, is the launch of Honda Mobilio in the coming weeks, and that of Jazz in Early 2015. Both these cars will be offered in diesel and petrol engine options, and are expected to add further growth to Honda Cars India sales in the country.

2014 Honda Civic Si Coupe
Heavier, But Ever Sporty; Oh, What A Shifter!

The Motor Trend card catalog indicates we’ve yet to have the, er, pleasure of testing a production Honda Civic Si weighing an honest to goodness 3000 pounds. That won’t change today, but we wonder what our reaction will be if and when Honda’s most dedicated sporty car crests the 1.5-ton mark. It probably wouldn’t be as severe as if an automatic transmission option were announced.

We’ve tested six different Si coupes and sedans since the 2012 model year began and you can tack on another five for 11 total when reaching back to 2006. The pudgiest to sit on our scales was the very first four-door Si offered (’07) at 2938 lbs, still svelte by modern standards. Next is the 2936-lb Rallye Red coupe seen here. Sandwiching it is another sedan (’09), weighing 2930 lbs. The rest managed to retain less than 2900 lbs of curb poundage. What we’re documenting is the heaviest Si coupe so far. But only one of the 11 can lay claim to having the most powerful Si engine ever. For 2014, the 2.4-liter I-4 gains another 4 hp and 4 lb-ft of torque to produce 205 hp at 7000 rpm and 174 lb-ft at 4400 rpm, compliments of a freer-flowing exhaust system (piping shape and path were modified but diameter is the same) and refined powertrain control module data. Each peak output is achieved at the same engine speeds as last year’s Si. Paired with one of the, if not the, most engaging six-speed manual shifters on the market, the car bursts through the 60-mph barricade in 6.5 seconds before finishing the quarter mile in 15 seconds flat and trapping 93.5 mph. The times and speed nearly sync up with the first K24-equipped coupe we got our hands on and place the ’14 near the straight average of the 2006-2013 Si group.

It runs great around town on a commuter route too, where the short 4.76:1 final-drive ratio and close gearing mean you can row deep into the gear count without excessively and noisily winding up the smooth-running, fast-revving engine. The extra power doesn’t leave an impression in the spec box, but remember when it used to be a big deal if a naturally aspirated four-cylinder pulled low 15s? One day, you’ll be croaking to your grandkids about non-turbocharged, port fuel-injected, driver-shifted cars like these as they whiz around on their hoverboards while wearing fashionable-again acid-wash jeans. But an engine does not an Si make, and, in a very subtle, Honda kind of way, numerous revisions were made to the rest of the car to further burnish its performance credibility. Eighteen-inch wheels and wider 225/40 Continental ContiSportContact 5s (a $200 upgrade for the summer tires) seize the corners, upping rim size an inch, increasing front track by 0.2 inch, and completely displacing the former Michelin factory fitments with Contis. Honda opted for bigger wheels on the back of customer and dealer feedback.

The ’14’s front springs are 4.3 percent stiffer, moving from a rate of 160 pounds per inch to 167. To help maintain the desired handling balance, the rear anti-roll bar was sized up in conjunction, from an 18-mm diameter to 20. The front anti-roll bar and rear springs stay pat at 21 mm and 254 lb/in, respectively. Engineers also targeted more responsive damping, especially at low shock-shaft speeds. Honestly, the car’s natural ride frequency feels harmonious enough that it doesn’t need a lot of damping to help control it. The touch of old school elegance in the suspension tuning is a nice throwback nowadays, with more Lotus and less Porsche in the feel of the motions and manners. 2014 Honda Civic Si Coupe Front Three Quarter In Motion The car will ride firmly if you’re stepping out of a Civic EX coupe, but is very soft if you’ve been looking at other hot alternatives like a Ford Focus ST or Volkswagen GTI. As always, engine and road noise make themselves at home, as we’ve become familiar with in many an Si. As always, the seats look good and hold you in place without beating you up. As always, there’s a sense of lightness throughout the car, whether you’re measuring up a corner with the light-but-accurate steering, using the new Display Audio 7-inch touch screen without a volume knob (finger-swipe with a light touch for best volume-setting results), enjoying the light and easy driver controls provided by the foot pedals and shifter, or rotating the car through a (track) turn. Driver’s driver Randy Pobst definitely thought highly of the Civic Si after lapping it at the Streets of Willow, calling it “a real playground ride of a FWD car, a lot of fun” in spite of its obviously soft shock setup. He had much to praise: the shifter, the helical limited slip, the brakes, the optional oversteer. Pobst: “There’s a fair amount of power understeer, like you’d expect from a FWD car. But if we take it in that context, it is not bad at all. It’s a well-behaved FWD under power and it doesn’t detract from the experience much. The only place you’re ever going to get oversteer is with a light trail-brake on the way in, before you go to power. What a great thing to have, that limited slip, a wonderful feature. Thank you Honda. The car really needs it. It has enough torque in the mid-range that it would be liquefying that inside tire.”

Contrary to what you might perceive when the 2.4-liter is singing to 7000 rpm, this is a car driven capably with a calm sense of mind. It might be outclassed on many performance fronts by its contemporaries -- by this point in time, it’s hard to fend off anything with an exhaust-spun snail -- but that knowledge doesn’t make this $23,780 coupe any less fun. Like its acceleration, the ’14 Civic Si yielded no quantifiable improvement in average lateral acceleration (0.86 g is fine but not spectacular) or around the figure eight (it’s near but not at the bottom of the modern Si time table), although the 60-0 mph braking in 110 feet is always welcome. But we know what you really want to learn: Would Randy Pobst recommend it for a novice performance car enthusiast? His answer: “Absolutely, it’s fabulous. The only thing wrong with it is it’ll spoil them because it shifts so well. What’s neat is it shifts. It still has a manual -- a real, live manual -- and a very good one. I enjoy that so much. I miss it when I drive cars with the modern versions of different automatics. Although, I’ll tell you the shifts are still so much slower than a modern automatic. That has to cost time (lap time).” No matter how heavy the next Civic Si is, no matter whichever engine and transmission ends up beneath its hood, we’ll keep looking for it to inject fun sportiness into our lives.

American Honda Reports June 2014 Sales

7/01/2014 - TORRANCE, Calif.

Honda Civic and Accord post sales of more than 32,000 each in June for increases of 8.7 and 2.1 percent respectively
Honda CR-V posts best-ever 6-month sales performance with a gain of 6.1 percent YTD
Total Acura truck sales were up 6.1 percent in June
Acura MDX claims best-ever 6-month sales performance with an increase of 68.4 percent

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported June 2014 Honda and Acura vehicle sales of 129,023 units. The Honda division posted sales of 117,817 units in June while Acura sold 11,206 units in the same period. Year-to-date American Honda sales reached 739,436 units.

Honda
Honda's core models—Accord, Civic and CR-V—continue to set the retail pace through the first half of 2014, with the Civic up 8.7 percent and Accord increasing 2.1 percent in June. However, retail consumers appeared to take a breath last month coupled with an unusually short number of selling days, the shortest June in five years.

Bucking a recent market shift toward SUVs, Civic is up 8.7 percent in June and 5.3 percent for the first six months of 2014—its best such period in a decade
Accord sales rise 2.1 percent in June
CR-V, the industry's most popular SUV, posted a year-to-date gain of 6.1 percent for its best-ever 6-month sales performance
Despite low inventory as supply ramps up, the all-new 2015 Fit is driving new traffic at Honda dealerships

"Despite an easing of the pace in June, the larger sales trend throughout the industry remains robust," said Jeff Conrad, Honda division senior vice president and general manager. "Our core products remain strong and though we're still filling its supply pipeline, the new 2015 Fit is selling very well and we expect it to add yet another strong pillar to Honda sales in the near future."

Acura
Overall Acura sales continue to reflect the decreasing supply of TL and TSX models as the company prepares for launch of the 2015 TLX line of luxury performance sedans later this summer. With an unprecedented first half of the year, MDX and RDX continue to sell at a near record pace, pushing Acura truck sales up 6.1 percent for the month.

Acura truck sales rise 6.1 percent in June
MDX June sales rose 27.7 percent on sales of 4,890 units
Posting its best-ever six-month sales performance, the Acura MDX led the division with sales of 30,644 units, an increase 68.4 percent over last year

"The MDX and RDX had a stellar first half of the year, certainly a good indicator that the Acura brand is moving in a strong direction," said Mike Accavitti, Acura division senior vice president and general manager. "While we expected the reduced supply of sedans to impact sales this summer, the upcoming launch of the all-new 2015 TLX lineup heralds a new era for the Acura brand."

Honda Civic Type R Owners Have Their Say on the Type R Concept

While we’ll have to wait until next year to see the production version of the all-new Honda Civic Type R, the concept previewing it has been around for quite a while.

Since Honda says the production car will look almost the same as the study, the carmaker showcased it at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, where around 200 Honda Civic Type R owners from across Europe were invited to drive their cars on the legendary track.

While they were at it, Civic Type R owners also looked at the Civic Type R Concept, with all opinions being positive regarding the design. Whereas in terms of performance Honda’s claim that the upcoming Type R will be the fastest front-wheel drive car ever on the Nurburgring will satisfy everybody, most Type R owners said they wish Honda doesn’t change anything on the car design-wise when it launches it next year.

Scroll down to see what Civic Type R owners think of the concept and to watch a short review of the Civic Type R Mugen Edition.
