Honda has issued yet another Takata recall, identifying a potential problem with airbag inflators used in the 2016 CR-V.
The supplier experienced a failure when performing cold tests for a driver frontal airbag module. The ruptured inflator was pulled from a production lot used in 515 new CR-Vs, prompting the repair campaign.
"In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns.
Laboratory analysis of the exploded module revealed a centerline crack in the inflator, potentially caused by improper stamping or defective material used to build the metal housing.
The problem appears to be separate from the propellant-degradation issues associated with millions of older recalled vehicles. Investigators have not yet definitively identified a root cause in either case.
It is unclear if CR-V campaign will prompt a wider investigation into Takata's current manufacturing processes.
