According to a report from Japan’s Nikkei newspaper cited by Reuters, Honda will expand its lineup in China to around 20 models. In order to do that, the company will share platforms and other major parts between its two existing joint ventures in China. Furthermore, Honda plans to source more Chinese parts in order to keep costs low, the report said without citing the source of its information.
Honda’s Chinese operations are relatively small compared to GM’s, which last year sold more than four times the number of cars that Honda sold. General Motors currently offers 40 models in the world’s largest car market.
This year China is expected to mark the second year of double-digit growth due to economic stimulus and demand from the country’s interior regions.
At this year’s Beijing Auto Show, Honda unveiled the pre-production Spirior Concept (pictured here) which previews the next-generation Accord for China, as well as the Concept B which anticipates a liftback model to be launched in 2016.
