Flashback Friday: Perfecting the NSX



If you consider the HP-X (Honda Pininfarina Xperimental) concept car in 1984 as the starting point of the NSX, it took Honda 6 years to turn their vision into reality. Perfection takes time, but those long years of development, testing, and even failures helped to define the NSX as an engineering icon.

In this video flashback from the late ’80s, legendary Formula One World Champion Ayrton Senna takes an NSX prototype around Suzuka Circuit for testing. His direct input and collaboration with Honda engineers would eventually help to fine-tune the NSX’s driving characteristics.

K20 Acura Integra GS-R - The Stuff of Dreams
Tuan Chau's JDM conversion


In late 1993, when Acura announced the third generation Integra, it was met with mixed reviews. Aesthetically, the four circular lights up front were so far removed from the second gen's sleek, streamlined lamps that many had no interest in the car. Others, however, after having experienced the new Integra's user-friendly cabin, excellent handling and new B18C power plant, were far more interested in how the car drove rather than how it looked.




As with most anything Honda-related, the folks overseas in Japan, Europe and other markets were treated to better performing and better looking options. Tuan Chau, owner of this 1995 Acura Integra GS-R, was well aware of the JDM frontend that avoided the quad headlight setup completely and instead relied upon attractive one-piece lamps and a more aggressive front bumper right from the factory. Many in the past had already done the conversion, but ever since he was 15 Chau had envisioned having one of his own. He found a car for sale in Seattle, went through with the purchase and had the car shipped to him in South Carolina.

Being that the newly purchased 1995 Integra GS-R was powered by a K20 swap that the previous owner had done, Chau took the car out for a few blasts to make sure it was up to par. Unfortunately, it wasn't and a nasty rod knock showed up almost immediately - a result of a spun rod bearing. Out came the engine, and the rest of the car was torn down for a complete rebuild.



Chau's paint shop took care of the Quicksilver color change, and knowing that he wanted the car to look factory fresh, he headed to his local Honda parts counter for new seals, moldings, trim and more bolts and clips than he can possibly remember. An Integra Type R five-lug conversion and Spoon calipers were added, and once the paint dried the chassis was ready for a new heart.


With plans to swap a K24/K20 combo into his Civic hatchback, Chau took that K20 and installed it into the 1995 Integra GS-R. To add a little more kick to the 2.0L lump, a Jackson Racing supercharger was bolted on up front, while an R*Crew header made its way to the rear of the newly painted engine bay.


Though Chau and his 1995 Acura Integra GS-R started off on the wrong foot, in the end, a complete restoration, supercharged heart and of course that JDM frontend conversion that he'd always dreamed about made up for everything.

Acura hopes awd helps it recoup sales
2 key sedans to feature next-gen technologies

TOKYO -- Acura expects its improved, next-generation all-wheel-drive technologies in two upcoming sedans to help make up lost ground from a delayed product launch as the brand chases a full-year U.S. sales increase, Mike Accavitti, the luxury brand's general manager, said.

The brand is seeking to recover from a delayed launch of the Acura TLX.

Through July, Acura sales slipped 2 percent to 90,431 vehicles. That knocked it off pace to beat the 165,436 vehicles it sold in 2013, which marked a 6 percent gain over 2012, amid an overall market up 8 percent.

A re-engineered Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, or SH-AWD, will be offered as an option on the mid-sized TLX sedan that hits dealerships in August. And a Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system will debut in a hybrid version of the flagship RLX sedan later in the year.

The new SH-AWD for the TLX is more compact, lighter and more responsive than the prior generation of the technology, Accavitti said. Key improvements include:

• A smaller profile reduces the cars' center hump.

• Lower weight boosts fuel economy.

• Re-engineered actuators reduce drag and enhance dynamics.

Honda Motor Co.'s premium brand expects the improvements to pull in new customers and help offset double-digit U.S. sales declines in June and July caused by the delayed launch of the new TLX, Accavitti said.

"Our June sales and our July sales are below our plan," Accavitti said, declining to give a specific full-year sales target. "We hope to make that up through the rest of the year."

Acura spokesman Atsushi Ohara said the TLX was delayed to ensure the performance of its new electronics and drivetrain hardware, including new engines.

Acura sees SH-AWD, which provides better grip and sharper handling, as a signature technology setting its front-wheel-drive vehicles apart in a field dominated by German rear-wheel-drive rivals. The TLX is the first vehicle getting the new version; the MDX crossover uses the previous generation technology.

The Sport Hybrid SH-AWD, which teams two electric motors to deliver more control and horsepower, will be a cornerstone technology in the RLX and NSX sports car due next year.

"This is something we think we can wrap our brand around. And we're taking a look right now and analyzing how we can do that and communicate it," Accavitti said. "It's a space that we own. And it offers the customer a distinct benefit."

Engineers trimmed 8 percent off the height of the latest SH-AWD system, thereby eliminating the center hump in the floor of the trunk, and achieved a 2 percent reduction in drag, Acura says. They also delivered a 25 percent weight reduction, partly by eliminating the planetary gear, using a single-motor design and integrating the lubrication pump into the main assembly.

"It's really improved in every way," Accavitti said. "We were able to remove the hump out of the floor. That's a really important thing for our customers. It's a competitive advantage."

Acura pairs SH-AWD with its Precision All-Wheel Steer system, standard-issue on two-wheel-drive TLX and RLX models, to deliver what executives say is superior maneuverability.

The all-wheel steering system angles rear wheels independently of each other.

Both technologies provide a responsive feel distinct from both standard fwd and rwd vehicles, Accavitti said. "It's a very unique experience," he said. "We think that some consumers are going to prefer it to a rear-wheel-drive offering."

Acura may use SH-AWD on other nameplates down the road, but cost is an issue. Acura dropped SH-AWD as an option for its RDX crossover and now equips that vehicle with the more pedestrian awd system used in the Honda CR-V.

Accavitti said expanding SH-AWD's use "is certainly something that we would want to look at."

National Acura Legend Meet 2014



The Legend, sold as Acura’s flagship model from 1986 through 1995, offered luxurious appointments as well as a sense of style that has endured the test of time. In its day, Legend was the best-selling import luxury car in America. The Legend propelled Acura to become an industry frontrunner and it set a benchmark by which other brands were measured. Today, nearly two decades later, the Legends live on with a strong enthusiast following. In late July 2014, a group of Legend owners congregated in southern California to participate in the 10th annual National Acura Legend Meet (NALM). A few of these die-hard Legend fans had driven from as far away as Florida to be a part of the festivities.

NALM started in 2005 with its inaugural program in Dallas, Texas and has since transitioned to host cities across the country each summer. The four-day event, headquartered this year in Thousand Oaks, gave Legend fans an opportunity to interact with one another and share their passion for this “niche” vehicle that was so important for the Acura brand. The first day, American Honda invited a caravan of over 25 Legends to its Torrance facility where head of Auto Shows & Exhibits, Dave Heath, provided a warm welcome to the private Honda Collection museum. The following day, the canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains northwest of Los Angeles gave the group an opportunity to put their suspensions to the test of some of its twisty roads like Mulholland Canyon. Neptune’s Net in Malibu on Pacific Coast Highway was the lunch destination that day.

Other attractions for those attending NALM were a dyno event at HK Motorsports in Van Nuys and a visit to the renowned “Supercar Sunday” weekly car show in Woodland Hills off Highway 101. Every minute of every day was accounted for, and the Los Angeles-based ground team who had organized the planning and logistics did a flawless job of keeping things on track.

The Legend fanbase is as diverse as can be, spanning a variety of ages and backgrounds. And each Legend, too, had its own personality. From a 32,000-mile all-original 1993 LS coupe owned by Chuck, to my road warrior 531,000-mile 1994 LS coupe. From a bone stock 1995 L sedan still in the hands of its original owner, Steve, to the highly-modified and customized 1994 LS coupe owned by Alex, which he essentially built from the ground up. No matter the condition or status of the vehicle, there is an understood appreciation and sense of brotherhood (or sisterhood) among the people who are passionate about these old cars. And as the original 1986 Legend has long-since earned “classic” status, the Legends just keep getting better with time.

Here’s to another 10 years of keeping the Legend alive.

I thought it would be fun to give the new Acura TLX a new front end, one that could give us an idea of what an aggressive Type-S variant might look like. This semi-quick render took about 4 hours, I meant to just play with the front bumper but ended up doing some last minute additions with an alternate TLX GT grille, Type-S badge, and wheels. Admittedly, the front was a bit “Audi RS” inspired. Leave me a comment below and let me know what you think.

TLX Coupe Would be Acura’s 4-Series Rival – Is there any Point to it?

Do you think the same person who prefers a new Acura TLX sedan over a German or American equivalent would also be interested in the car’s two-door variant?

Such a car would go up against the likes of the BMW 4-Series, Cadillac ATS Coupe and Lexus RC.

Highly unlikely, we say, but, even so, X-Tomi took the time to craft this thoroughly believable rendering of a TLX coupe.

It’s okay to look at and, if it were a real model, you wouldn’t mind your friend having one and you occasionally being a passenger it, ordering at the McDonald’s drive-thru, but owning one yourself and ignoring all the other offerings in the sector? Maybe if it was considerably cheaper.

What do you think: would there be a case for such a model to be made? Would it sell more than five?

MONTEREY, Calif. -- In the auto design world, there are the suave, black-turtleneck types and there are guys like Dave Marek, a chatty hot-rodder who'd rather skip a fancy dinner than get dressed up for it.

The 57-year-old global creative director of Acura is one of the key decision-makers in the new Acura Business Planning Office, a task force charged with reinvigorating Honda's luxury brand and cementing its identity. If Marek gets his way, that identity will be defined not by floaty sedans, but rather by performance models such as the coming NSX supercar.

"The brand started that way, and needs to retain its roots in a performance-based image," said Marek, whose tenure at American Honda began in 1986, around the time Acura was born.

In addition to Acura's production vehicles, Marek oversees designs for Acura's motorsports program, such as vehicle graphics and paint schemes and styling of prototype vehicles.

During afternoon competition at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at the Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca near here, he spoke with News Editor Krishnan Anantharaman, though his eyes tended to wander toward the zoom of the cars on the track.

Q: What kinds of cars get your attention?

A: Non-ours, you mean? Any Porsche race car I'm just fanatical about. Road cars -- it's gonna be what everybody likes. Exotic cars always get everybody, I think.

I have a lot of friends in the design business because of my longevity, and I teach at Art Center, so I know every student that has come through. So whenever I see a car they did I have some pride in that, that I knew that I helped teach them.

I've always been a 911 guy. The progression of that car from inception -- you know, I had a '67, so I had the first year -- and then you see what they've become. I've always admired that.

I like the Tesla. I like the feel of it. It feels modern but normal enough to get people to buy it.

That's a great hat. What do you look for in a hat?

I am a hat guy. The New Jersey hat is always good. Honest to God, It's like a car. I literally will buy hats and I wear them backwards because of the rake. I can't have them be the wrong attitude on your head. So I'll turn them around.

How many watches? How many pairs of glasses?

I have a Swatch collection. I probably have 300 Swatches and other watches. A hundred pairs of glasses. And I go through them. Glasses, more than anything, are like cars, because other than Ray-Bans or something classic, I'll pick them up and go, "Dude, those look old now." I'll just eliminate those, and they just kind of sit there because I can't bear to part with them. But then I started giving them to Out of the Closet or Goodwill because people need glasses. Why am I hoarding these?

I've painted some. I've taken them apart and painted them and put them back together. It's more for the individuality, something unique about them. No one else has these. "Where'd you get those? I painted them."

You've had some interesting celebrity encounters. Which ones stand out?

I was standing with Brad Pitt. He goes to this restaurant in Hollywood called Mexico City. And there's a big line for the bathroom. I think it was Cinco de Mayo. He's standing there, right behind me. And I can feel him being edgy, like he really had to go, and he's kind of bumping a little. I turn around and I go, "Just 'cause you're famous, you ain't cutting in front of me." He started laughing and said, "That's OK." But then we kind of had a conversation.

It's fun to just encounter them because you never know what their personality is going to be -- or mine. I'm not very vocal about what my profession is. And most of them, when they get down into it ... they're like, "Wow, that's so cool!" Because, you know, rock stars want to own cars, and car guys want to be rock stars. Through cars, I've met everybody.

What's your office like?

When you walk in, there's a full-size model, a full-size model, a full-size model and they're all lined up, and you can view them all [in a row] ... which is perfect for me because I want to see what the hierarchy is and what's happening at the time.

And everybody seems to work around the models. We all have desks, but everybody is on the floor, and they all work down by the car. We're Friday-casual all the time. We're actually Saturday-casual all the time.

What's in your garage?

Uh, a bunch of old refrigerators? No. I don't own a car right now. It's amazing. You get to a point where you're like, it's going to be that or that. I'm gonna get maybe an old [Porsche] 550 or I'm going to get a '55 Chevy or a '32 Ford. Daily it changes with my mood.

The car I want is unattainable: a [Porsche] 917/30. That's the car I just go ape over.

Last week Acura de San Juan in Puerto Rico held a gala event to celebrate both the grand opening of their new dealership and the unveiling of the new Acura TLX. One of the dealership’s notable features is an Acura inspired sculpture/water fountain by Puerto Rican artist Luis Torruellas. Also, customers looking to pass time can work on their golf game with the dealership’s own virtual golf simulator, which is said to be the most advanced simulator on the island.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported August 2014 Honda and Acura vehicle sales of 167,038 units, an increase of 0.4 percent versus August of last year. The Honda division posted the third highest monthly sales result its 44-year history, on sales of 151,551 vehicles in August while Acura posted sales of 15,487 units in the same period. Year-to-date American Honda sales reached 1,042,382 units.

With the new Acura TLX arriving at dealers across the country last month, enthusiastic customers gave Acura dealers much to cheer about in August, as the new luxury performance sedan sold nearly as fast as dealers could unload them from transport trucks. While TLX supplies continue to ramp up, the best-selling MDX continued to set a near-record pace, and ILX enjoyed its best August on record.

    TLX went on-sale mid-August and is driving heavy dealer traffic to dealerships nationwide. The great majority of these early units were 3.5-liter V6 models as the 2.4-liter four cylinder began arriving later in the month and V6 SH-AWD models just starting to ship.
    With supplies improving, the Acura ILX posted its best ever August result on sales of 1,798 units, an increase of 5.7 percent.


“With TLX less than a month on the market, our dealers are reporting incredible showroom traffic with customers trying to buy a TLX before we can get it on the dealer lot,” said Mike Accavitti, Acura division senior vice president and general manager. “Customer interest is the strongest we’ve seen on a new model launch, and we’re just now starting to deliver the highly-rated TLX four-cylinder and V6 SH-AWD models.”

Rumor: Acura TLX Sport Variant on the Way?



Could a sportier Acura TLX model be in the works? At a recent TLX review session with an Acura team that included Chief Engineer Mat Hargett, Autoweek says a TLX sport variant was mentioned:

    “A sportier version of the TLX was repeatedly hinted at by Acura personnel, but there’s no saying what might be under the hood of that. Honda’s rekindled interest in forced induction raises some interesting possibilities, though. Hey, the racing version of the TLX uses a twin-turbo V6, so we can dream.”

While this could mean a number of things, if a sportier TLX or Type-S model is indeed on the way, we hope it will be based more on performance rather than cosmetic changes.
