Paris Motor Show 2016 Press Kit

1. All-new Civic Hatchback

The all-new tenth-generation Honda Civic represents a significant step forward for Honda in the C-segment, benefiting from the largest single model development programme in the company’s history.

The Civic is a core model for Honda in Europe and has been at the heart of the brand’s sales and manufacturing heritage in the region. For many European customers the Civic is synonymous with the Honda brand and the development team targeted a dynamic rejuvenation of Civic. This aim demanded new thinking and new approaches to body construction, vehicle aerodynamics and chassis design.

Building on its 40-year heritage, the car stays true to the original Civic concept of “a car for all people, a car for the world”. It is a marriage of distinctive design, sporty styling and versatile practicality – with a renewed focus on rewarding driving dynamics.

Distinctive exterior design

The purposeful silhouette makes a confident statement about the Civic’s sporty character. Wider, longer, and lower than any of its predecessors, the all-new Civic has short overhangs and taut lines that reference the high levels of aerodynamic efficiency. A sharp and aggressive ‘face’, pronounced wheel-arches and sculpted front and rear intakes hint at the Civic’s sporting character.

All-new platform

The all-new Civic has been engineered from the ground up to fulfil the promise of agile and rewarding dynamics. A lightweight, highly rigid bodyshell – the product of innovative new engineering and construction techniques – complements the lower centre of gravity and a sophisticated new suspension system in contributing directly to an engaging and fun driving experience.

Refined interior with next generation infotainment

The entirely new interior features a simple, uncluttered layout, new technologies, exceptional refinement and high-grade materials with a lower seating position to give the driver a greater feeling of connection with the car. The second-generation of Honda’s infotainment and connectivity system – Connect – incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

All-new VTEC TURBO gasoline engines

The all-new Civic debuts two all-new VTEC TURBO gasoline engines that have been developed specifically to deliver a powerful, engaging and efficient driving experience.

Honda Sensing as standard

The Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver-assistance technologies specified across the range ensures the car is among the very safest in its class.

Sporty, fresh and distinctive exterior design

The new Civic hatchback features a sleek and swept back silhouette and articulates a fresh and distinctive new Honda design direction that conveys a strong and sporty character. The sharp lines are complemented by the most comprehensive aerodynamic packaging in the compact segment, including complete underbody panelling.

The athletic look starts with low and wide proportions which reflect an increased footprint. The hatchback is 30 mm wider and 130 mm longer than the previous-generation five-door Civic. The car is 20 mm lower than its forebear, creating a sleek roofline. These generous dimensions underpin the distinctive design and sporty styling, while also facilitating rewarding dynamics and increased interior space.

New larger and wider wheels and tyres further emphasise the wide stance, while the long wheelbase, short overhangs and sweeping cabin area further add to the dynamic feel of the exterior.

Sporty and sophisticated design details include a short front overhang with distinctive air intakes for a sporty, purposeful stature. The result is a sharp and aggressive contemporary interpretation of Honda’s family ‘face’, incorporating signature Honda front headlight clusters.

Depending on the model grade, the thin, high-tech front lamp clusters feature either sharp high-tech LED headlights or projector halogen bulbs. All models feature LED daytime running lights that illuminate a hockey-stick shaped strip at the outer edge of the cluster.

The sleek and swept-back body contour lines continue along the flanks of the car, with a swage line which bisects front and rear door handles before culminating in the distinctive C-shaped LED rear lights.

The rear bumper’s sharp creases and sculpted air outlets complete a dramatic and sporty look.

The overall effect is sleek, sophisticated dynamism with distinctive and thoroughly modern Civic exterior design.

Newly engineered from the ground up, the all-new platform was developed for an engaging and dynamic driving experience

Recognising that customers in the all-new Civic’s target global markets now expect superior standards of quality, refinement and dynamic performance, the Civic development was Honda’s biggest ever single model engineering programme.

The objective was to regain the essence of Civic as a car with a distinctive sporty driving character. From the earliest stage of platform development, the engineering team benchmarked the world’s best compact-class cars, including those from leading premium brands. This evaluation process ultimately served to define the new Civic’s targets in ride, handling, steering and NVH, as well as interior quality and overall refinement.

Despite the ambitious engineering programme, the new Civic still meets the requirements of “a car for all people, a car for the world” by retaining its position as an affordable compact car in terms of cost, fuel efficiency and manufacturability. As such, the development process demanded new thinking and new approaches to body construction, aerodynamics, powertrain and chassis design.

Advanced new unibody platform

The new platform’s design, the selection of materials, the engineering process, and innovative manufacturing techniques have been key to creating a lighter, significantly more rigid structure. It is 16 kg lighter than that of the previous generation Civic, while exhibiting 52 percent greater torsional stiffness.

Significant platform design features include front and rear bulkhead ‘rings’ that encircle the entire interior cabin space. Further platform rigidity is provided by a low-sensitivity front-floor structure, including cross braces in front of the engine bay and between the bases of the A- and B-pillars.

Further innovation is employed in the body’s assembly process, which involves an innovative high-efficiency joining technique. The entire inner frame is assembled first, followed by the outer frame, and then the joints. This defies the conventional method of body frame assembly, which sees the outer frame assembled first, followed by inner assembly and the joints. This new production technology contributes greatly to the overall stiffness of the body.

Short-pitch welding places spot welds 20 mm apart in critical areas of the unibody, compared to traditional spacing of between 40 mm and 45 mm. This further contributes to increased stiffness and durability.

These design, engineering and manufacturing innovations result in a 19 percent increase in the body's global bending rigidity compared to the previous generation Civic, and a 23 percent increase in torsional rigidity. This in turn provides a greater opportunity to tune the suspension for superior ride and handling performance.

The most agile and dynamically proficient Civic ever

The advanced platform provides an optimised foundation for significantly improved chassis dynamics. The design team set themselves the target of achieving class-best handling and ride comfort.

All-new suspension, a lower centre of gravity and a boost in body rigidity help give this latest generation Civic engaging driving characteristics. Ride comfort is exemplary as a result of exhaustive development and a focus on compliance-boosting techniques and technologies.

The Civic’s fuel tank has been relocated and the car’s floor is lower than that of the outgoing model. Combined with the revisions to the chassis and suspension, the all-new model’s centre of gravity is 14 mm lower. These changes also allow the driving position to be set nearer to the road, with a hip point 35 mm lower, giving a more sporty feel.

At the front, lower-arm-type front MacPherson strut suspension provides high lateral rigidity for linear handling, and low longitudinal rigidity for optimised ride compliance.

At the rear, an all-new multi-link suspension set-up and new rigid subframe deliver high stability for superior ride comfort and linear handling.

Great attention was paid to the specific position of the suspension mounts to ensure optimal stiffness to enhance the suspension’s performance. Hydraulic fluid-filled compliance bushings at the front and rear result in superior ride isolation, as well as chassis vibration control. Furthermore, the new subframes at the front and the rear are specifically laid out so that cornering forces are transmitted more directly through the suspension to the subframes.

On higher grades, a 4 point adaptive damper system allows the driver to tailor ride to conditions. This is a first application of this technology on a C-segment Honda vehicle.

All-new 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre VTEC TURBO gasoline engines deliver dynamic performance with class-leading output

The all-new Civic hatchback is the first model in Europe to offer Honda’s 1.0 litre three-cylinder and 1.5 litre four-cylinder gasoline turbocharged engines. Honda’s engineering heritage encompasses some of the most celebrated high performing engines in the industry, and the new VTEC TURBO units are designed first and foremost to offer dynamic performance to support the all-new Civic’s soulful, sporty character. Nevertheless, these engines also achieve highly competitive fuel economy and efficiency. Both engines will be available with either a newly-designed six-speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic.

The three-cylinder 1.0 litre VTEC TURBO gasoline unit delivers a significant improvement in everyday driveability, thanks to greater torque at low and mid-range engine speeds. Maximum torque of 200 Nm with the six-speed manual is available at 2,250 rpm, and 180 Nm with the CVT is available between 1,700 rpm and 4,500 rpm. Maximum power is 129 PS (95 kW) at 5,500 rpm.

The larger four-cylinder 1.5-litre VTEC TURBO gasoline engine provides substantially greater performance – in power and torque – over the previous Civic’s 1.8-litre VTEC. Maximum power is 182 PS (134 kW) at 5,500 rpm (at 6,000 rpm with

CVT). With the six-speed manual, 240 Nm maximum torque is delivered between 1,900 rpm and 5,500 rpm. With the CVT, 220 Nm is delivered between 1,700 rpm and 6,000 rpm.

Class-leading interior space with improved usability

The all-new Civic is set to continue the model’s reputation for providing class-leading practicality and unrivalled passenger and cargo space. High quality materials, a simple and sophisticated design theme, and new digital instrument binnacle display provide a fresh, premium interior ambience.

More spacious passenger cabin

Aided in part by a longer, wider platform and 30 mm longer wheelbase, occupants benefit from greater visibility and more space in which to enjoy the premium fit and finish.

The driving position is 35 mm lower than in the previous generation Civic to create a more secure, enveloped feeling for the driver and front passenger. A more compact dashboard upper surface means it sits 65mm lower, resulting in improved forward and downward visibility – the eyeline angle to road increases to 7.60 degrees (compared to 6.56 degrees for previous generation Civic), while thin A-pillars (18mm narrower) reduce the obstructed forward view by 11.6 percent, providing a class-leading 84.3 degrees of forward visibility. This also creates an open and airy feel to the cabin.

Ergonomically-optimised front seats are designed to provide high levels of comfort, with the driver’s seat featuring an adjustable thigh support with 14 steps of adjustment to ensure the optimal seating position. The front seats have 10 mm greater fore / aft slide range, and 10 mm greater height range adjustment than the previous Civic.

Front shoulder room has been increased by 10 mm, and space between the front seats has increased by 15 mm. Rear seat shoulder room in the hatchback is up by 20 mm, while passengers in the back will also enjoy 95 mm more legroom, as well as 45 mm more knee room. Comfort for outboard occupants in the rear is improved by adjustable seat base cushions, and ingress and egress for all passengers is now easier than ever.

A light, airy feeling is further accomplished with the large tilt-and-slide panoramic sunroof (available on higher grade models).

Class-leading boot space and versatility

Boot space remains class-leading in terms of volume (478 litres), whilst ease of access and versatility has been further improved. The rear seats split / fold 60:40, low sill height and wide boot opening (1,120 mm) combine with the flat boot floor to make the loading of heavy, wide and long items easy. A hidden underfloor compartment offers a secure additional storage area (excludes Sport models).

Premium interior design and quality

The all-new interior is designed to offer the most comfortable and sophisticated cabin in the compact class and gives the all-new Civic a thoroughly modern, sleek and simple aesthetic to complement the sharply sculpted exterior. This is achieved with horizontal lines that accentuate the feeling of width and length, and therefore spaciousness.

A sophisticated, premium ambience is augmented by cabin trim finished in high-quality materials, including a one-piece soft-touch instrument panel with moulded stitching and premium seat fabrics.

‘Technology centre’ console

The centre console features a piano-black finish, and was designed to follow a ‘technology centre’ theme.

The lower part in front of the gear lever is configured as a two-tier storage tray, specifically with the management of personal electronic devices in mind. The front tray provides at-a-glance and grab-and-go access to devices, with an integrated wireless smartphone charging pad available on some grades. A hole through the centre console means that cables can be passed from the second tier tray to the front tray, helping to keep cable connectivity and device charging and connectivity neat and tidy. LED lighting aids visibility for the two-tier tray layout at night.

Above the storage tray, a contrasting silver panel presents the simple, uncluttered ventilation controls, while overhead LED lighting adds to the premium ambience.

At the top of the centre console sits the seven-inch Honda Connect colour touchscreen display (please see next section). As well as being a touch-control device for the infotainment and climate control functions, the display integrates with a reversing camera on top grades.

In front of the driver, a completely new instrument display layout provides vivid clarity and highly intuitive usability. A new seven-inch colour TFT-LCD Driver Information Interface (DII) display makes up the largest central section of the all-new reconfigured instrument binnacle. It includes a large digital tachometer and speedometer readout. Integrated into the DII display is a large area in which the driver can switch between a variety of infotainment screens, including navigation instructions, SMS and email text display (complemented by voice activated responses), audio track information, smartphone contacts, journey trip information, and smart vehicle maintenance information.

This primary display is flanked by coolant-temperature and fuel-level gauges, again on TFT-LCD displays. All the displays are high contrast, easy-to-read, and contemporary in their typeface. As the driver enters the car, the instrumentation illuminates progressively to give a sophisticated, warm welcome.

Scrolling and selecting the information to display in the DII is performed via thumbpad controls on the left spoke of the steering wheel. It gives the driver the capability to scroll through the DII modes and adjust settings, perform alphabetic searches – of contacts or music tracks, for example – as well as to select the preferred information to display in the instrument binnacle’s DII. Also on the left spoke are the integrated Bluetooth®3 HandsFreeLink® telephone controls. The combination of thumbpad controls and DII display in the driver’s forward line-of-sight helps to minimise distractions for the driver while underway.

Next-generation Honda Connect delivers enhanced, more intuitive connected infotainment

The new Civic is available with the second-generation of Honda’s Connect infotainment and connectivity system, which offers enhanced intuitive operation and full smartphone integration via both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto.

Integration with Apple CarPlay means that Honda Connect can now bring iPhone functionality to the driving experience, delivering the interface through the all-new Civic’s built-in display. Drivers can get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music from the touch-screen or by voice using Apple’s Siri commands. The supported apps on CarPlay include Phone, Messages, Maps, Music and other compatible third-party software where specified. CarPlay is compatible with iOS 8.4 or later and iPhone 5 or later.

Android Auto has been designed to give drivers a simple, intuitive way to use Android smartphones through both touch and voice interfaces, minimising the potential for distraction. Android Auto is compatible with Android 5.0 and higher, and the supported features include Google Maps, Google Now, messaging, music and numerous other popular apps, depending on the market.

Honda Connect can be specified with optional Garmin satellite navigation, with pre-loaded maps, photo-real junction views, lane guidance, real-time traffic avoidance, 3D building and terrain views, and Eco Routing. Free map updates will be provided for five years, a benefit unique to Honda.

Options for the available audio configuration vary by grade, from a four-speaker 160 watt output, an eight-speaker 180 watt output, or a premium system with 11 speakers (465 watt).

Standard Honda SENSING across the range makes new Civic one of the safest cars in its class

The all-new Civic has been engineered to achieve industry-leading safety performance. The development team’s success in creating class-leading body rigidity and stiffness, in conjunction with a comprehensive suite of active and passive safety technologies are anticipated to help the all-new Civic earn top ratings in the latest Euro NCAP tests.

In line with Honda’s ‘Safety for Everyone’ philosophy, the same passive and active safety systems are included across all grades of the new Civic.

The Honda SENSING suite of active safety and driver assist technologies will be specified across the new Civic range. Honda SENSING is among the most comprehensive suites of safety technologies in its class. It uses a combination of radar and camera information, plus a host of high-tech sensors to warn and assist the driver in potentially dangerous scenarios.

The Honda SENSING suite of active safety technologies includes:

Collision Mitigation Braking System: helps to bring the car to a stop if the system determines that a collision with a vehicle detected in front is unavoidable.
Lane Departure Warning: will detect if the car is straying out of its current lane without the turn signal being activated.
Road Departure Mitigation: uses data from the windscreen-mounted camera to detect whether the car is veering off the road. It uses the Electric Power Steering to apply subtle corrections to keep the vehicle in its lane, and in certain situations can also apply braking force.
Lane Keeping Assist System: helps to keep the car in the middle of the current lane, by detecting road markings and making small steering adjustments to steer the vehicle within the white lines.
Adaptive Cruise Control: allows the driver to set a desired speed and following distance from a vehicle detected ahead.
Traffic Sign Recognition: detects and automatically recognises road signs and displays the signs on the car’s instrument binnacle’s
Intelligent Speed Assistance: combines the automatic speed limit set by the driver with TSR to automatically adjust the vehicle speed to that indicated by the last road sign
Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (i-ACC): Predicts and automatically reacts to other vehicles ‘cutting-in’ on multi-lane highways.

Further safety technologies in the all-new Civic include:

Blind Spot Information: uses radar technology to automatically detect and alert of vehicles in the driver’s blind spot
Cross Traffic Monitor: uses rear side radar sensors to warn the driver of approaching vehicles when reversing
Multi-angle rear view camera: provides the driver with options for complete visibility and therefore peace-of-mind when reversing; a normal 130 degree view, a wide 180 degree view and a top-down view

Also fitted as standard are Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) with traction control, which enhances control capability while the vehicle is accelerating, braking, cornering, and Indirect Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) .

New Civic Type R Prototype breaks cover in Paris

New Civic Type R Prototype unveiled at 2016 Mondial de L’Automobile in Paris
Prototype marked out by wide, aggressive bumpers, extended wheel arches and dramatic rear wing
Bespoke ‘brushed aluminium’ wrap provides eye-catching finish
Car officially unveiled at 14:30 on the Honda stand in Hall 3

The new Honda Civic Type R Prototype has been revealed at the 2016 Mondial de L’Automobile in Paris, offering an insight into the styling of the next-generation Civic Type R which will be officially unveiled in 2017.

Based on the low and wide proportions of the new Civic hatchback, the Type R Prototype is enhanced by muscular body styling and modifications to aid aerodynamic performance. The exterior is clothed in a highly reflective, finely-grained brushed aluminium-effect finish unique to the show car.

At the front, the aggressive bumper is accentuated with a winged carbon fibre splitter and sporty red accent line. Additional slatted ducts add width to the bumper, and diamond-mesh inserts fill the sculpted air intakes.

Honda’s famous red ‘H’ badge – which adorns all Type R models – sits above a new air vent at the nose of the car. There is also a new intake on the bonnet, with an air scoop sited centrally in a trapezoidal recess. Smoked lenses for the LED headlights, indicators and side repeaters reflect the Type R Prototype’s more aggressive character.

Carbon fibre side skirts run the length of the wheelbase, between 20-inch piano black alloy wheels with red accents and 245-section high-performance tyres. Enlarged arches accommodate the new wheels.

A substantial carbon fibre diffuser runs below the wider rear bumper, which frames three fully-functional tailpipes with a pair of directional strakes at each side. The central tailpipe is of a smaller diameter and is highlighted in bright metallic red. Unique peaks at the roof flanks point backwards towards a dramatic, visually striking rear wing.

The next-generation Civic Type R was engineered within the same development programme as the other members of the Civic family, and will be officially unveiled in production form next year. It will be produced at Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) in Swindon – the global manufacturing hub for the five-door hatchback, with sales expected to begin in Europe during the second half of 2017.

The Type R will be exported to markets around the world, including the US – which will mark the first time that any Honda-badged Type R has been officially sold in North America.

The Type R will be officially unveiled at 14:30 on the Honda stand, located in Hall 3.

Honda sales continue to increase in 2016 with the brand continuing to lead mainstream manufacturers as the fastest growing in Europe

Following the successful launch of a refreshed automobile range in 2015, Mondial de L’Automobile 2016 has seen Honda unleash its latest salvo of new products for Europe. President and Chief Operating Officer of Honda Motor Europe, Katsushi Inoue, and Senior Vice President, Philip Ross, unveiled the new Civic Hatchback and Civic Type R Prototype, whilst celebrating a year of strong European sales growth for the Japanese marque.

Speaking at this afternoon’s press conference, Inoue-san commented, “In 2016, Honda in Europe has posted strong sales growth with an increase of 31% compared to 2015.That makes Honda the fastest growing mainstream car brand in Europe. Just as encouraging is the broad base of our growth, with strong sales increases in the 5 largest European markets [UK, Germany, Spain, Italy and France]. What’s more, 60% of these buyers are new to the Honda brand.”

New Civic Hatchback

Engineered for Europe, built at Honda’s UK manufacturing plant in Swindon* and exported globally, the new Civic Hatchback sees Honda take a step change in the quality of its compact segment offering.

A new exterior design incorporating a wider, longer and lower silhouette marks out the car as a departure from the last generation. Inside, improved materials give a premium feel with a sportier seating position (lowered by 35 mm compared to the current model).

Under the body, Honda’s new range of VTEC TURBO powertrains give a responsive and exciting driving characteristic, while maintaining the strong efficiency Honda is renowned for. Ride and handling are improved by a totally new suspension set up including the adoption of an independent multi-link system at the rear.

The new car further incorporates next generation advanced technology with a revised Honda CONNECT infotainment system, complete with Apple CarPlay™ and Google Android™ Auto functionality. The new Civic Hatchback goes on sale in Europe from Spring 2017.

New Civic Sedan

The new hatchback was partnered on Honda’s stand by the European version of the new 4-door sedan model. Built at Honda’s production facility in Gebze, Turkey, the new sedan has already been warmly received by customers in other markets, particularly the US where it has been on sale since late 2015.

The European version will be available across all mainland Europe markets from Spring 2017, initially available with a 1.5-litre VTEC TURBO engine and a choice of 6-speed manual or CVT automatic transmissions. Later in 2017, a 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine will also be on sale.

New Civic Type R Prototype

Alongside the new C-sector challenger, Honda sprung a surprise by unveiling the prototype version of the new Civic Type R. The prototype previews the aggressive design direction for the mass production Civic Type R, scheduled for a European launch in the second half of 2017.

During the unveil of the Type R Prototype, Senior Vice President Philip Ross said, “Type R epitomises Honda’s racing DNA, our challenging spirit and the highest levels of performance engineering. Coming to Europe during the second half of 2017, we’re now set to embark on the next chapter of the ‘race car for the road’.”

Honda NSX brings 'Hummingbird' to life

Honda NSX recreates famous ‘Hummingbird’ Nazca Desert geoglyph using GPS
Sport Hybrid SH-AWD technology enables detail of original drawing to be replicated faithfully
High-tech production and hardware captures the feat on video
The 'NSX Driving Drawing' covered 601,195 square metres

Honda has combined its all-new NSX hybrid supercar with advanced GPS visualisation equipment to recreate one of the world's most famous geoglyphs – huge artworks that can be viewed in full only from high altitude.

The incredible 'NSX Driving Drawing' – depicting the 'Hummingbird' geoglyph in the Nazca Desert in Peru – has been documented in an online video, released ahead of the 2016 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix at the Suzuka Circuit on Sunday 9 October.

The Nazca Lines geoglyphs in Peru, created between 500 B.C. and A.D. 500, are formed from shallow trenches, where the top layer of dark pebbles has been removed to expose a lighter-coloured layer of earth below. Over time, the exposed earth develops a protective layer that shields the drawn lines, preventing distortion or erosion.

While the original 'Hummingbird' is approximately 93 metres long, Honda 'supersized' the earthwork, with a final design more than 10 times the size, measuring 965 metres end to end. A high-resolution image of the Nazca Lines was used to trace and digitise the Hummingbird, producing a set of GPS co-ordinates accurate to within three metres.

The intricate design incorporates more than 30 hairpin turns, so the Honda NSX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) technology was crucial to achieving the precision cornering required to recreate the earthwork. The two electric motors driving the front axle meant the NSX could execute exceptionally tight turns, slowing the inner wheel in sharp corners, while increasing the drive on the outer wheel to accelerate through the hairpin.

Recreating the geoglyph required a huge effort from a joint Japan-US Honda team, using high-accuracy GPS mapping and tracking, as well as a head-mounted display to enable the NSX driver to follow the design precisely. While the car sped along the planned route, its GPS signal was tracked and displayed on a monitor in real time, revealing the giant 601,195 square-metre artwork to the team back at the staging site.

The feat took place on the El Mirage salt flats in California, which became an expansive white canvas for the day, with high-tech drones and camera cranes on hand to capture the event on video.

The all-new NSX is the ultimate representation of Honda performance and technical innovation. Power comes from a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged V6 engine, paired with an all-new nine-speed dual clutch transmission and direct drive motor that supplements the engine with instant torque response. Allied to this set up is the front Twin Motor Unit (TMU), with two electric motors capable of independently driving the left and right front wheels.

This sophisticated powertrain is coupled to Honda’s Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, a first-of-its-kind technology in the supercar arena. The result is a supercar that faithfully translates the acceleration, steering and braking inputs of the driver with incredible fidelity and instantaneous response.

Honda reveals ‘Cooperative Mobility Ecosystem’ at CES 2017

Collaborative display highlights open innovation; offers intelligent, connected and fun mobility for the future
Moto Riding Assist and NeuV concept car leverage Honda’s R&D investments
Experiential demonstrations showcase collaborations with partners including Visa and DreamWorks

Honda has unveiled its Cooperative Mobility Ecosystem concept at CES 2017 in Las Vegas, connecting the power of artificial intelligence, robotics and big data to transform the mobility experience of the future and improve customers’ quality of life. Featuring a number of prototype and concept technology demonstrations at CES, the Honda concept envisions a future where vehicles will communicate with each other and infrastructure to mitigate traffic congestion and eliminate traffic fatalities, while increasing the productivity of road users and delivering new types of in-vehicle entertainment experiences. Vehicles will create new value by providing services autonomously when not in use by their owners.

Honda has also announced technology collaborations with Visa, DreamWorks Animation and innovative start-ups through the Honda Developer Studio and Honda Xcelerator open innovation programs based out of Honda Silicon Valley Lab.

Supporting its ‘Cooperative Mobility Ecosystem’ theme, Honda unveiled the Honda NeuV, an electric automated concept car equipped with an artificial intelligence (AI) ‘emotion engine’” and automated personal assistant, creating new possibilities for human interaction and new value for customers.

The global mobility company also revealed the Honda Moto Riding Assist, a concept motorcycle that applies Honda’s robotics technology to maintain balance. Visitors to Honda’s exhibit (LVCC, North Hall – 7312) can experience Honda robotics technology firsthand by ‘“test driving’” the UNI-CUB, the company’s self-balancing personal mobility device.

“Since our founding, Honda has focused on creating technologies that help people,” said Yoshiyuki Matsumoto, President and CEO of Honda R&D Co., Ltd. “Our goal is to showcase a future technology path that results in a redefined mobility experience.”

The following is a summary of the product and technology concepts shown on the Honda exhibit at CES 2017:

Honda Riding Assist motorcycle

In a global debut at CES, Honda has unveiled its Moto Riding Assist technology, which leverages Honda’s robotics technology to create a self-balancing motorcycle that greatly reduces the possibility of falling over while the motorcycle is at rest. Rather than relying on gyroscopes, which add a great deal of weight and alter the riding experience as announced by other companies, the Honda Moto Riding Assist incorporates technology originally developed for the company’s UNI-CUB personal mobility device.

Honda NeuV

Designed to create new possibilities for customers, the NeuV (pronounced ‘“new-v’”), which stands for New Electric Urban Vehicle, is a concept vehicle whose genesis is based on the fact that privately-owned vehicles sit idle 96 percent of the time. The NeuV explores the idea of how to create new value for its owner by functioning as an automated ride sharing vehicle, picking up and dropping off customers at local destinations when the owner is not using the car. The NeuV also can sell energy back to the electric grid during times of high demand when it’s not in use. These activities have the potential to create a new business model for enterprising customers.

“We designed NeuV to become more valuable to the owner by optimising and monetising the vehicle’s down time,” said Mike Tsay, Principal Designer, Honda R&D Americas.

NeuV also functions as a thoughtful and helpful AI assistant utilising an ‘“emotion engine’”, an emerging technology developed by Honda and SoftBank (cocoro SB Corp.). Called HANA (Honda Automated Network Assistant), in its application in the NeuV, the ‘“emotion engine’” will learn from the driver by detecting the emotions behind the driver’s judgments and then, based on the driver’s past decisions, make new choices and recommendations. HANA can check on the driver’s emotional well-being, make music recommendations based on mood, and support the owner’s daily driving routine.

The NeuV features a full touch-panel interface enabling both the driver and passenger to access a simple and convenient user experience. The vehicle has two seats, a storage area in back, and an electric skateboard for ‘“last mile’” transit. The NeuV also features outstanding outward visibility via a wrap-around panoramic windscreen and a dramatically sloping belt line that make manoeuvring easy.

Safe Swarm

At CES, Honda launched its ‘“Safe Swarm’” concept, which uses bio-mimicry – replicating the behavior of a school of fish – to create a safer, more efficient and enjoyable driving experience. The Honda Safe Swarm demonstration immerses visitors in a world where vehicles sharing the road communicate with one another using dedicated short range communication (DSRC) to support the driver in negotiating complex driving situations. The Safe Swarm concept enables vehicles to operate cooperatively, enabling more efficient, low-stress and, ultimately, collision-free mobility.

“The autonomous age has dawned, and Honda, like all automakers, is working to refine and advance this technology to achieve our goal for a collision-free society in the 2040 timeframe,” said Frank Paluch, President, Honda R&D Americas. “Using vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications and drawing upon big data and artificial intelligence, Honda will work with others to create an environment in which road conditions are predicted and managed, and collisions are avoided.”

Honda UNI-CUB

The Honda UNI-CUB exhibit enables CES attendees to experience a self-balancing personal mobility device that allows the seated rider to control speed, move in any direction and stop, all by simply shifting their body weight. Earlier this year, the company opened the UNI-CUB’s API, seeking to facilitate the creation of software that can control the device from a smartphone and other devices, which would provide the potential to expand its value and functionality for people. With the ability to freely move forward, backward, side-to-side and diagonally, UNI-CUB can quickly and easily manoeuvre among people.

Open Innovation and Collaboration

Continuing its pursuit of open innovation and collaboration, Honda also announced initiatives with entrepreneurs, start-ups and global tech brands via the Honda Silicon Valley Lab.

Visa – Building on the companies’ mobile payment collaboration at last year’s Mobile World Congress, Honda is conducting two proof-of-concept demonstrations at CES created through its partnership with Visa. These demonstrations will be the first undertaken with infrastructure partners Gilbarco Veeder-Root and IPS Group. The demos will showcase the simplicity and convenience when paying for services such as fuel purchases and public parking from the comfort and safety of a vehicle.

DreamWorks Animation – Honda has teamed up with DreamWorks Animation to develop new cross-platform, augmented- and virtual reality-content and solutions for the in-vehicle experience. Honda is demonstrating a proof-of-concept version of its Honda Dream Drive in-car virtual reality prototype featuring exclusive DreamWorks Animation content at CES.

Vocal Zoom – Through its Honda Xcelerator program, Honda is working with Vocal Zoom to apply its optical microphone technology to the in-car experience. By reading physical vibrations generated from the speaker’s voice, Vocal Zoom’s optical sensor ascertains additional layers of voice data not attainable by traditional acoustic mics alone. This additional information significantly increases an onboard computer’s understanding of voice commands, especially in harsh-noise environments.

LEIA Inc. – Through another Honda Xcelerator collaboration, with LEIA, Honda has developed a new driver’s display concept that uses LEIA’s nano technology to provide three-dimensional images, providing seamless transitions between different viewing angles for warnings and driver-assistive systems. Although 3D can be distracting if it is not designed correctly, the LEIA’s nanotech approach presents depth in a way that feels natural. Honda sees a number of potential applications for this technology, from navigation to traffic information.

CES attendees can learn more and experience demonstrations of the Honda ‘Cooperative Mobility Ecosystem’ at the Honda booth (#7312) from January 5-8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Videos, images and more details can be found at www.honda.us/CES2017.

Honda confirmed as Europe’s fastest growing mainstream brand in 2016

Overall sales growth of 20.8% across EU and EFTA markets in 2016
Increased demand across the model range, with sales boosts for HR-V, Jazz and Civic
Strong growth across all five main European markets
2017 marks start of production of European version of all-new Civic

Honda has been confirmed as the fastest growing mainstream car brand in Europe for the full year in 2016. The latest data from European industry body ACEA shows that total sales for Honda in EU and EFTA countries in 2016 were 159,126 units to the end of December, an increase of 20.8% per cent compared to same period in 2015. Honda’s growth significantly outpaced the results for the EU passenger car market as a whole, which saw a year-on-year increase of 6.8% per cent.

The strong 2016 performance was driven by demand across Honda’s model range, with HR-V, Jazz and Civic all seeing year-on-year growth. HR-V made a strong contribution to the overall total in Europe, with sales of 34,921 units. The Jazz supermini saw sales growth of 26.0 per cent last year, following the launch of the all-new model, with total registrations of 39,613 across EU and EFTA markets. New Civic Type R led the refreshed Civic range to increased sales of 47,300 units in 2016, up 4.9 per cent on the previous year.

Honda saw sales growth in all five of the main car markets in Europe in 2016 (UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain)**. The market with the highest rate of growth was Italy, with a 98.0 per cent increase, making it Honda’s 3rd largest European market. Other particularly strong growth rates across Europe included Finland (+47.7%), Portugal (+38.6%) and Hungary (+58.1%).

Jean-Marc Streng, General Manager, Automobile Division, Honda Motor Europe, commented, “Thanks to the product introductions we made towards the end of 2015, Honda made a sales resurgence in 2016, with strong increases across most of our markets. I am pleased to see strong growth across a range of products, particularly Civic in its final full year of sales. The new Civic goes on sale in just a few weeks and will provide further positive momentum in 2017.”

Sales success for Honda Motor Europe in 2016 was bolstered by a number of significant news announcements throughout the year. The all-new Civic Hatchback Prototype was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and production of the US market version commenced in August at Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) in Swindon, UK. HUM is the global production hub for the new Civic hatchback, with the model set to be exported to more than 70 countries around the world, including European markets, North America and Canada.

The unveil of the all-new Civic Type R Prototype stole the show at Mondial de L’Automobile in Paris at the end of September, and the all-new Type R has this month been named as the most eagerly anticipated launch of 2017 by readers of What Car? in the UK. The first examples of the new Clarity Fuel Cell arrived in Europe in November, to participate in the Hydrogen for Innovative Vehicles (HyFIVE) EU demonstration project. The year was rounded off with the delivery of the first European Honda NSX to former CEO of Honda Switzerland, Claude Sage.

2017 Honda Civic   salut'

Introduction: All-new five-door Civic exhibits best ever dynamics and sophistication

    Sporty, distinctive design
Engineered to deliver an engaging and dynamic driving experience
All-new gasoline engines deliver a combination of dynamic performance, class-leading output and excellent fuel economy
Retains class-leading interior space with improved usability
Next-generation Honda Connect delivers enhanced intuitive operation
Honda SENSING makes new Civic one of the safest cars in its class

The all-new tenth-generation Honda Civic is a dynamic, five-door sports hatchback. It represents a significant step forward for Honda in the C-segment, benefiting from the largest single model global development programme in the company’s history.

The Civic is a core model for Honda in Europe and has been at the heart of the brand’s strong sales and manufacturing heritage in the region. For many European customers the Civic is synonymous with the Honda brand and the development team targeted a dynamic rejuvenation of Civic to place it in a league of its own.

“The creation of this tenth-generation Civic represents one of the most comprehensive and ambitious new model developments ever undertaken by Honda,” said Mitsuru Kariya, Chief Engineer and Global Project Leader. “As well as an unprecedented commitment of R&D resources, the process involved sales and manufacturing operations around the world, from North America and Japan, to Europe, South America and Asia. This car, the sportiest Civic ever, sets new benchmarks for the compact class in terms of dynamic performance, fuel efficiency, spaciousness, safety and interior quality.”

Achieving class leadership – while also meeting requirements for sales price, fuel efficiency and manufacturability – demanded new thinking and new approaches to body construction, vehicle aerodynamics and chassis design. The development team rallied around the core project slogan ‘otokomae’ to create a strong clarity of purpose. Otokamae embodies a sense of grace and elegance as well as an inner beauty.

The development team conducted extensive real-world benchmark testing, including assessment of European luxury vehicles, in setting the targets for ride, handling, steering and NVH, as well as interior quality and overall refinement.

Building on its 40-year heritage, the car stays true to the original Civic concept of “a car for all people, a car for the world”. It is a marriage of distinctive design, sporty styling and versatile practicality – with a renewed focus on rewarding driving dynamics.

The purposeful five-door hatchback silhouette makes a confident statement about the Civic’s sporty character.

The new wider, longer platform results in class-leading interior space. The entirely new interior features a simple, uncluttered layout, new technologies, exceptional refinement and high-grade materials. The seating position is a major change against the ninth generation car, sited lower to give the driver a greater feeling of connection with the car, enhanced by greatly improved visibility to the front of new Civic. The new Civic builds on the model’s reputation for combining unrivalled passenger and luggage space with versatile, practical usability. The second-generation of Honda’s infotainment and connectivity system incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

The all-new Civic debuts two all-new VTEC TURBO gasoline engines that have been developed specifically to deliver a powerful, engaging and efficient driving experience.

The Honda SENSING suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies available across the range ensures the car is among the very safest in its class.

The new Civic five-door hatchback will be built in Europe at Honda’s UK manufacturing facility and exported globally.

The concepts, approach and technologies embodied by the all-new Civic present an affirmation of Honda’s position as a sporty and advanced brand, while also confirming Honda’s commitment to Europe and the compact segment.

2. Sporty, fresh and distinctive exterior design

Dramatic next-generation interpretation of signature Civic design
Lower, wider and longer than previous model for a sleeker silhouette and sure-footed, muscular stance
    Class-leading aerodynamics

With an assertive new stance and advanced aerodynamics, the all-new Civic advances design into the next era. A sleek and swept back silhouette articulate a fresh and distinctive new Honda design direction that conveys a strong and sporty character. The sharp lines are complemented by the most comprehensive aerodynamic packaging in the compact segment, including complete underbody panelling.

The athletic look starts with low and wide proportions which reflect an increased footprint. The new Civic is 30 mm wider, 136 mm longer and 20 mm lower than the previous-generation model.

“What we sought to instil in the completely rejuvenated new Civic was genuine charisma,” comments Mitsuru Kariya, Chief Engineer and Global Project Leader. “While this has to come from more than the styling, the athletic external appearance must allude to the dynamic attributes and technologies that lie within.”

Sporty and sophisticated design details include a short front overhang with distinctive large air intakes for a more purposeful stature. The result is a sharp and aggressive contemporary interpretation of Honda’s family ‘face’, incorporating signature Honda front headlight clusters.

The top edge of the front light clusters meet the top of the grille at the leading edge of the bonnet to create a neat, seamless, accented strip across the full width of the car, helping to project a wide, sure-footed stance.

A second, lower bodyside character line extends from the base of the front door behind the front wheel, up through the doors and meets the rear wheel arches, creating a forward-in-motion look that emphasises the car’s dynamic potential.

The aggressively sloped roofline, featuring a fin-type antenna, flows into C-pillars that extend the curvature of the roof rearward to the rear corners

Distinctive peaks at the hatchback’s roof flanks rise from the top of the C-pillars towards the top corners of the rear screen and meet the ‘floating’ roof spoiler. A second, lower tailgate spoiler incorporates the central third brake light.

The rear bumper’s sharp creases and sculpted air outlets complete a dramatic and sporty look. The overall effect is sleek, sophisticated dynamism with distinctive and thoroughly modern Civic exterior design.

The new Civic will be available in seven exterior paint finishes: solid Rallye Red, metallic Lunar Silver, Polished Metal and Brilliant Blue, and pearlescent White Orchid, Crystal Black and Sonic Grey.

Buyers of the 1.5 litre VTEC TURBO engine will be able to opt for either ‘Sport’, ‘Sport Plus’ or ‘Prestige’ grades, each of which feature exclusive exterior finishing touches. The Sport and Sport Plus grades boast more pronounced front and rear spoilers, side skirt garnish and an exclusive 17-inch alloy wheel design. They also feature LED headlights and front fog lamps, while at the rear they are marked out by centre-mounted twin exhaust pipes with chrome finishers.

The Prestige grade sees discreet sophistication added by a chrome front grille finish, chrome door handles and chrome side window surrounds.

Class-leading aerodynamics

The Civic’s development team sought to achieve the most aerodynamically efficient body in the compact class, balancing low aerodynamic drag with high-speed stability. It achieved this through careful management of airflow over and under the car to minimise lift.

The CdA – the combination of coefficient of drag (Cd) and frontal area (A) – is improved by 3 percent over the outgoing Civic to best-in-class levels, based on Honda internal test data.

Advanced designs for the A-pillar and front and rear bumpers minimise disturbance of the passing air and the front grille is shaped to reduce engine cooling air losses. Under-engine and under-floor covers provide an almost entirely flat vehicle underside, while lateral strakes located ahead of each wheel-arch help deflect airflow around the tyres. These measures contribute to airflow efficiency and reduce the aerodynamic drag and Honda’s engineers developed a wheel design which results in a further four percent reduction.

The short front overhang also contributes to improved aerodynamic efficiency, while stamped steel exhaust silencers are aerodynamically shaped and eliminate the need for an additional underside cover at the rear of the vehicle.

The flush-mounted windscreen and side window glass and minimised panel gaps further improve aerodynamic performance.

The lower tailgate spoiler plays an important role in managing the flow of the air departing the rear of the car. It is specifically designed, with precisely configured width and height, to create a clean air stream by reducing the turbulence behind the car, increasing the Civic’s aerodynamic efficiency.

3. Newly engineered from the ground up, the all-new platform was developed for an engaging and dynamic driving experience

New Civic is the result of the largest single model development programme in Honda’s history
The most engaging and fun Civic driving experience ever
    Lower, more sporty driving position
New suspension setup delivers exceptional handling and ride comfort
Advanced NVH management delivers class-leading interior refinement

Recognising that customers in the all-new Civic’s target global markets now expect European standards of quality, refinement and dynamic performance, the Civic development team planned Honda’s biggest ever single model engineering programme to create an entirely new car from the ground up.

The objective was to realise a dynamic rejuvenation of the Civic that would make it competitive with the best in the segment. From the earliest stage of platform development, the engineering team benchmarked the world’s best compact-class cars, including those from leading European premium brands. This evaluation process ultimately served to define the new Civic’s targets in ride, handling, steering and NVH, as well as interior quality and overall refinement.

“From the very first stages, we defined our number-one objective for this new Civic as the creation of soulful performance,” said Mitsuru Kariya, Chief Engineer and Global Project Leader. “Dynamic performance targets were set and achieved through an exhaustive, gruelling regime of testing and development. The result is a platform that provides both superior driving stability and refinement, as well as a confidence-building, low-slung driving position.”

The global programme – unprecedented in its scale for Honda – incorporated the five-door, four-door, coupe and Type R variants as part of a single development project that aimed to exceed benchmark European quality and performance standards.

Development of the five-door Civic for Europe was carried out through extensive on-road testing across Germany and UK.

Advanced new unibody platform

The new platform’s design, the selection of materials, the engineering process, and novel manufacturing techniques have been key to creating a lighter, significantly more rigid structure. It is 16 kg lighter than that of the previous generation Civic, while exhibiting 52 percent greater torsional stiffness. The improvements in rigidity and the design of the unibody contributed significant improvements to NVH characteristics.

Significant platform design features include front and rear bulkhead ‘rings’ that encircle the entire interior cabin space. Further platform rigidity is provided by a low-sensitivity front-floor structure, including cross braces in front of the engine bay and between the bases of the A- and B-pillars.

The lightweight, high tensile materials employed across thestructure improve body rigidity and crush safety. Hot stamped steel was applied to a wider area, resulting in an increase to 12 percent from just six percent in the previous Civic.

The use of ultra-high strength steel increases the strength and reduces the overall weight of the entire body frame. For example, one of the most significant areas for the platform’s overall strength is the B-pillar and lower sill.

These design, engineering and manufacturing innovations result in a 65 percent increase in the body's global bending rigidity compared to the previous generation Civic, and a 41 percent increase in torsional rigidity. This in turn provides a greater opportunity to tune the suspension for superior ride and handling performance.
