2019 Pilot gets upgraded with standard LED headlights and "Telematics"

The 3rd generation Pilot hit the streets 3 years ago as a 2016 model, and like the HR-V it is due for its mid-cycle model change (MMC) for the 2019 model year. We’ve received some information about the changes through some of our contacts in the dealer body. The powertrain seems to be the same, with a standard 280hp V6 and either a 6-speed or 9-speed automatic transmission, depending upon trim level.

We’ve seen some spy shots of the Pilot during testing, but they really didn’t reveal much, if anything about what’s coming. We’ve heard that the headlights and grille have been restyled to fall more inline with the current corporate face. New wheels and updated exterior trim (possibly including revised taillights) are also expected. Inside the Pilot, we were told to expect an upgrade to higher quality materials.

Following are the trims that will be offered for 2019

    EX-L with Navi and RES

Let’s start with the LX. For 2019 Honda Sensing is standard on all Pilot models. We know that it won’t include the low-speed follow feature on the LX trim but the info we currently have is a little unclear on whether it will be available on the upper trim levels. LED headlights (low beams) are also standard on all Pilot trim levels, as are 18” wheels, the (carryover) 280hp 3.5L V6 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), auto up/down windows for driver and passenger, and automatic high beams.

The EX adds blind spot indicators, an 8-way power driver’s seat, one-touch 2nd row seat operation (new for EX trims in 2019), LED fog lights, rear HVAC with rear controls, heated front seats (new for EX in 2019), smart entry, remote engine start (one way transmitter), dual-zone automatic HVAC, Display Audio with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, XM and HD radio, heated body-colore exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals, body-colored exterior door handles, cross traffic monitor, an extra 12V power outlet, a conversation mirror, and illuminated visor vanity mirrors.

Stepping up to the EX-L, you get a leather trimmed interior, a power moonroof, a power tailgate, 4-way power passenger seat, auto dimming rearview mirror, a memory function for the driver seat and door mirrors, 2nd row sunshades, homelink, and 2 extra USB ports (located in the 2nd row).

The EX-L with Navigation and Rear Entertainment system (RES), obviously adds a navigation feature to the DisplayAudio system, while the rear entertainment system is upgraded with Blu-ray and streaming functionality. A 110V AC power outlet is also part of the RES package.

The Touring models get everything in the EX-L Navi/Res package, plus 20” (can you feel the curb rash?) wheels, a 9-speed automatic transmission, parking sensors, heated 2nd row seats, a standard roof rack, FULL LED headlights (high and low-beam), paddle shifters, handsfree access power tailgate, 10 speaker premium audio system, 3 zone ambient lighting system, auto stop/start system, chrome exterior door handles, chrome accented door garnishes. And new for 2019, the Pilot Touring is getting a telematics system. If we were to guess, this sounds like the next-generation HondaLink telematics system that launched with the 2018 Accord Touring models. Here's the relevant text from the Accord Press Kit

The Accord also offers the next-generation of HondaLink™ telematics with new capabilities including emergency roadside assistance, remote locking/unlocking and engine start, stolen vehicle tracking, remote diagnostics, geofencing, speed tracking and more.

The “Touring-7” designation means that this trim level swaps out the 2nd row bench seat of the Pilot in favor of 2 captain’s chairs, reducing the passenger capacity from a count of 8 to 7. When opting for this trim level you also gain one more zone of ambient lighting.

The Pilot Elite starts with the Touring-7 equipment, and then adds ventilated front seats, auto-dimming side mirrors, a heated steering wheel, rain sensing wipers, wireless phone charger, power folding exterior door mirrors, and 3rd row floor mats.

Honda reveals refreshed 2019 HR-V and Pilot

Honda has just issued the following release concerning the MMC updates to the Pilot and HR-V models, both set to go on sale next month.

Refreshed 2019 Pilot and HR-V to Further Strengthen Award-Winning Honda SUV Lineup

Jun 28, 2018 - TORRANCE, Calif.

Pilot gets more aggressive exterior styling and new technologies
HR-V gains two new trims, updated styling and all-new technology
Honda Sensing® safety and driver-assistive technologies now available or standard equipment on all Honda nameplates, with addition of HR-V

Honda will celebrate summer with the launch of significantly refreshed versions of its 8-passenger Pilot SUV and subcompact HR-V SUV, both featuring freshened styling, noteworthy powertrain refinements and major connected-car technology upgrades, including available new Display Audio systems with a physical volume knob, and Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integration. In addition, Pilot and HR-V also benefit from the expanded application of Honda Sensing®, which will now be standard equipment on all Pilots, and on EX and higher grades of HR-V. The new Pilot and HR-V will go on-sale at Honda dealerships on July 16 and July 24, respectively.

With the addition of Honda Sensing® to the HR-V, Honda's advanced safety and driver-assistive technology will now be available or standard equipment on every nameplate in the Honda lineup, as the company moves toward its goal of 100 percent standard application of Honda Sensing® to all vehicles sold in the U.S. by 2022.

"The continued fortification of the Honda light truck lineup with the refreshed 2019 Pilot and HR-V further enhances our already award-winning lineup of Honda SUVs," said Henio Arcangeli, Jr., senior vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and general manager of the Honda Division. "With application to HR-V, Honda Sensing is now available or standard on every Honda model, which is both an incredible benefit to our customers and increased value over the competition."

Honda-brand light-truck sales are up 1.9 percent this year to 300,159 units through the end of May as Honda targets a fifth consecutive yearly sales record in 2018. For the first time in the brand's history, Honda light trucks are expected to outsell Honda passenger cars this year on the way to another all-time light-truck sales record. Honda-brand light-truck sales growth is led by a 41 percent jump in sales of Pilot through the end of May on improved supply resulting from a major increase in Pilot production at the company's Lincoln, Alabama plant, which now produces Pilot on a dedicated production line, alongside the Ridgeline pickup and Odyssey minivan, manufactured on a second production line.

All Honda SUVs, minivans and pickups are produced in North America using domestic and globally-sourced parts, with more than 60 percent in the U.S. at plants in Lincoln, Alabama, in Greensburg, Indiana and in East Liberty, Ohio. The Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline recently took three of the top 10 spots in's 2018 American-Made Index. The company will add production of CR-V, America's best-selling SUV over the past 22 years, to a fourth North American plant, in Marysville, Ohio, later this year.

2019 Honda Pilot

The 2019 Pilot brings a long list of upgrades to Honda's award-winning 8-passenger SUV, including more aggressive exterior styling, an available new hands-free power tailgate and significant refinements to its 9-speed automatic transmission (available in Touring and Elite trims). Major available technology upgrades include 4G LTE in-car Wi-Fi, a larger Rear Entertainment System with Blu-Ray™ and streaming video capability, Honda's innovative CabinTalk™ in-car PA system and smartphone-enabled CabinControl™ app, along with a new Display Audio touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integration, over-the-air updates and a volume knob.

Consistent with Honda's previously announced plan to make Honda Sensing® standard equipment on all models and trims within the next four years, the 2019 Pilot adopts the Honda Sensing® suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technology as standard equipment on all grades.

The many upgrades reinforce Pilot's fundamental capabilities while augmenting the state-of-the-art technology and family-friendly character that has made it one of the most popular midsize 3-row SUVs. Pilot also remains one of the few models in the segment to offer 8-passenger seating. Full details of the 2019 Pilot refresh will be available when it goes on sale July 16.

2019 HR-V

The 2019 Honda HR-V expands its appeal as a versatile and sporty 5-door subcompact SUV with the addition of new Sport and Touring trims, refreshed styling, new technology including an available new Display Audio system with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ integration and a more refined driving experience. The freshened HR-V also benefits from refinements to its standard Continuously Variable automatic Transmission (CVT) and available Real Time all-wheel drive system, additional sound deadening features and the addition of variable-ratio electric power steering.

The 2019 HR-V is also available for the first time with Honda Sensing® safety and driver-assistive technology, standard on EX and higher trims. The addition of Honda Sensing® to HR-V means all Honda models, from the fun and affordable Fit to the amazingly capable Ridgeline pickup, are available with Honda's advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies. Honda Sensing® is a more robust system of technologies than key competitors and includes Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM), Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). Full details of the 2019 HR-V refresh will be available when it goes on sale July 24.

Spied on the Street! 2019 Pilot and Pilot PHEV mule

Our friendly automotive spy lensman from the midwest has again captured the following 2019 Pilot subjects testing in the wilds of Ohio. Included below are the comments from Spiedbilde.

Today we got up close with the 2019 Honda Pilot, and got our first look at a mule for the PHEV version.

The refreshed Pilot will adapt styling cues from the recently on-sale Accord and Odyssey. Up front, expect to see a more aggressive lower front fascia, new grille, and a revised set of LED headlights. Around back, look for the taillights to crib the Accord, along with a revised tailgate and lower rear fascia.

The Pilot is expected to add a hybrid or plug-in hybrid option for 2019 that will be shared with the Odyssey. This system will be a version of the two-motor hybrid powertrain currently used in the Accord Hybrid. Base power should still come from the 3.5L V6 DI.

Expect to see the 2019 Honda Pilot later this year.
