Honda announced Thursday that it is investing $750 million (CAD$857 million) in its Ontario operations over the next three years to support the Alliston plant's new role as global lead for Civic production.

While much of the investment will go into vehicle assembly technology for the Alliston facility, a portion of it will also fund working training and R&D partnerships with local universities and colleges. The province of Ontario is contributing $75 million (CAD$85.7 million) in the form of conditional grants.

As a result of this investment, Alliston will become a teaching plant for all other Honda facilities worldwide. According to Reuters, this will be the first time a plant outside of Japan has been designated as the lead facility for the Civic.

"With [this] $857 million investment, Honda is pleased to extend our commitment and deep manufacturing roots in Ontario. In 1986, we became the first Japanese auto company to manufacture in Ontario. Today, we employ more than 4,000 highly-skilled Ontarians in our three plants, have built over 6 million vehicles in this province and our total manufacturing investments in Ontario will now reach nearly $3.9 billion. I would like to thank the Government of Ontario for supporting our efforts to innovate and remain competitive in an increasingly aggressive global automotive market," said Honda Canada President and CEO Jerry Chenkin.

When the Alliston plant opened in 1986, Honda became the first Japanese automobile manufacturer to assemble vehicles in Canada.
