https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/368913/honda-introduces-its-progress-toward-electrification-and-business-transformation-for-the-future?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_5302&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

TOKYO, Japan, April 12, 2022 – Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today held a press briefing on its initiatives in automobile electrification business that included participation of the following Honda executives:

Toshihiro Mibe: Director, President and Representative Executive Officer
Kohei Takeuchi: Director, Executive Vice President and Representative Executive Officer
Shinji Aoyama: Senior Managing Executive Officer

A press briefing video is available in English on the following YouTube link: https://youtu.be/FqWWKsPje_8

A summary of the briefing follows:

    Honda initiative for electrification

Honda is striving to be a company which serves as a source of “power” that supports people around the world who are trying to do things based on their own initiative and that helps people expand their own potential. To this end, Honda strives to realize “the joy and freedom of mobility” by seeking a “zero environmental footprint.”

<Solidifying existing businesses>

Over the past several years, Honda has been pursuing various initiatives toward the direction to “solidify existing businesses” and to “prepare for new growth” and these initiatives have begun showing positive results in the areas of products, businesses and new technologies.

・The structure of Honda automobile business has made steady improvement. As of today, the total number of variations at the trim and option level for global models has been reduced to less than one-half of the number in 2018 (Target: a reduction to one-third by 2025).

・As for cost associated with global automobile production, Honda is on track to achieve its 10% reduction target, compared to the cost recorded in 2018.

Honda will continue to accelerate its efforts to generate resources by solidifying existing businesses and invest such resources in electrification and the preparation for new growth.

<Unique Honda approach>

As the world's largest power unit manufacturer with annual sales of approximately 30 million units of mobility products including motorcycles, automobiles, power products, outboard motors and aircraft, we aim to realize carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities Honda is involved in by 2050, striving to eliminate carbon emissions from power sources of a wide variety of products. To this end, Honda believes that a multifaceted and multidimensional approach is needed, not a mere replacing of engines with batteries.

Including the utilization of swappable batteries and hydrogen as well as electrification of automobiles, Honda will offer a variety of solutions for all of its mobility products according to how its customers use the products in various countries and regions.

Furthermore, with the connected platform, which connects all these elements, Honda will enhance the convenience and efficiency of society as a whole.

<Organizational changes made to strengthen electrification business>

In the past, Honda divided its organization by products, namely motorcycle, automobile and power products. However, starting this fiscal year, technology areas which will become the core of the future competitiveness of Honda have been moved from their respective product-based organizations and combined under the newly created Business Development Operations. Such core areas are: electrified products and services, battery, energy, Mobile Power Pack, hydrogen and software/connected technologies that connect all core areas. With this change, Honda will accelerate the speed at which it can move and enhance the “cross-domain” synergy effect among Honda products.

    Initiatives for automobile electrification business

<Battery procurement strategy>

The key challenge in the EV era is the global procurement of batteries. Honda has two basic approaches for its battery procurement strategy.

1) Now and for the time being:

Honda will ensure stable procurement of liquid lithium-ion batteries in each region by strengthening the external partnership.

North America: Honda will procure Ultium batteries from GM. Separately, aside from GM, Honda is exploring the possibility of creating a joint venture company for battery production.
China: Honda will further strengthen our collaboration with CATL.
Japan: Honda will procure batteries for mini-EVs from Envision AESC.

2) From the second half of the 2020s:

Honda will further accelerate its independent research and development of next-generation batteries. For the all-solid-state batteries it currently has under development, Honda decided to build a demonstration line, investing approximately 43 billion yen, with a goal to make it operational in Spring 2024. Honda aims to adopt its next-generation batteries to models to be introduced to the market in the second half of the 2020s.

<Introduction of EVs>

Specific plans for the market introduction of EV models are as follows.

1) From now through the second half of the 2020s:

Honda will introduce products tailored to the market characteristics of each region.

North America: In 2024, Honda will introduce two mid- to large-size EV models currently being developed jointly with GM. (Honda brand: All-new Prologue SUV, Acura brand: an EV SUV model.)
China: Honda will introduce a total of 10 new EV models by 2027.
Japan: In early 2024, Honda will first introduce a commercial-use mini-EV model at the 1-million-yen price range. Then, Honda is planning to make the timely introduction of personal-use mini-EVs and EV SUVs.

2) After the second half of the 2020s:

Assuming it will become the time of the popularization of EVs, Honda will begin introducing the best EVs from a global perspective.

・In 2026, Honda will begin adopting Honda e: Architecture, an EV platform that combines the hardware platform and software platform.

・Through the alliance with GM, Honda is planning to introduce affordable EVs in 2027, with a cost and range that will be as competitive as gasoline-powered vehicles, starting from North America.

Through these initiatives Honda is planning to launch 30 EV models globally by 2030, with a full lineup from commercial-use mini-EVs to flagship-class models, and Honda is planning for production volume of more than 2 million units annually.

<EV production>

As for EV production operations, in China, Honda is planning to build a dedicated EV plant in Guangzhou as well as Wuhan.
Honda is planning for a dedicated EV production line also in North America.

Strengthening of the areas of connected / software technologies

Honda is striving to offer greater value not only with each of our products, but when various Honda products become linked and realize a connectivity beyond their product domains.

The key to achieve such connectivity is the technologies and frameworks, where Honda positions its electrified products as “terminals” and connects energy and information stored in each product with its users and society. Therefore, Honda will work on the establishment of the cross-domain connected platform, which will create new value for its customers.

In the areas of electrification technologies, including batteries, as well as software and connected technologies, for the acceleration of its development efforts, Honda will strive for a significant enhancement of development capabilities, which will include the strengthening of its human resource recruiting from outside Honda.

Also, in these areas, Honda will proactively pursue inter-industry collaboration and alliances, as well as investments in startups.

Financial strategies that support the transformation of Honda businesses

While making progress in electrification, Honda will shift focus from non-recurring hardware sales business and strive to transform the portfolio of Honda businesses by combining hardware and software to expand connections with its customers and the range of its businesses. Also, after 2030, Honda will strengthen its combined solution business and also businesses in new areas. To realize such transformation of the business portfolio, Honda has been putting effort into solidifying its existing businesses.

<Improvement of the earnings structure>

In addition to its steady efforts to solidify existing businesses, Honda strived to reduce costs from all directions while facing a difficult business environment due to issues such as the pandemic and semiconductor shortage. As a result, the business structure has been improving, and Honda is confident that its continuous efforts will enable an adequate achievement of the return on sales (ROS) of more than 7%, which had been Honda’s mid- to long-term target. Also, the net cash balance was 1.9 trillion yen (at the end of the third quarter ended Dec. 31, 2021), maintaining a healthy level.

<Resource investments over the next 10 years and utilization of external funding>

Honda will budget approximately 8 trillion yen for its research and development expenses. Of all R&D areas, Honda is planning to invest approximately 5 trillion yen in the areas of electrification and software (Approx. 3.5 trillion yen for R&D expenses and approx. 1.5 trillion yen for investments).
For the preparation of new growth, including new technology areas and resource circulation, Honda will invest approximately 1 trillion yen over the next 10 years.
Honda will be active in investing in startups with high-potential advanced technologies and business models at a scale of 10 billion yen per year, which will expand the range of Honda technologies and businesses.
Based on its policy to utilize external funding methods on an as-needed basis, Honda issued Green Bonds totaling US$2.75 billion in March of this year. By allocating the proceeds from these Green Bonds to the development and production of zero-emission vehicles such as EVs and FCVs, Honda will further accelerate our initiatives toward the realization of a society that aims for zero environmental impact.

    Sports models

While taking on challenges toward carbon neutrality and electrification, Honda always has a passion to offer FUN for its customers. The “joy of driving” will be passed on to our models even in the era of electrification, and Honda will globally introduce two sports models, a specialty and a flagship model, which will embody Honda’s universal sports mindset and distinctive characteristics.

NEW CIVIC ENGINEERED TO DELIVER ENGAGING DYNAMICS AND PERFORMANCE WITH IMPRESSIVE ECONOMY AND EFFICIENCY

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/368573/new-civic-engineered-to-deliver-engaging-dynamics-and-performance-with-impressive-economy-and-effici?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_5317&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

e:HEV powertrain delivers exceptional efficiency and response
High levels of body rigidity maximise stability and agility
Steering and suspension configured to balance driver satisfaction with comfort
Hybrid-only Civic is the final mainstream Honda model to be electrified
WLTP economy from just 4.7 l/100km and CO2 from just 108g/km

The all-new Honda Civic has been engineered to ensure that its e:HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) powertrain, steering and suspension deliver the engaging levels of performance, dynamic response and feedback that have always been central to the Civic’s appeal. The result is a car that blends a rewarding driving experience with highly competitive efficiency and emissions.

Available later in 2022, the 11th-generation Civic is the final mainstream Honda model to be electrified, following the CR-V, Honda e, Jazz, Jazz Crosstar, and HR-V. The car will feature the most advanced iteration of the brand’s award-winning e:HEV full-hybrid powertrain. This combines a power-dense lithium-ion battery and two compact, powerful electric motors with a newly-developed 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, which achieves industry-best equalling 41% thermal efficiency and features a direct injection system optimised for faster and more efficient combustion and greater torque output.  In addition to direct injection system, a number of technologies such as low temperature active catalyst, and a modified design on intake port help contribute to improved fuel economy whilst achieving specific output.

The result of these technological advancements is a WLTP ‘Combined’ CO2 emission figure of just 108g/km (WLTP), with fuel economy an equally impressive 4.7l/100km. This exceptional efficiency is combined with a maximum power output of 135kW and 315Nm maximum torque, ensuring the all new Civic is a compelling driver’s car within the C-segment.

This superior efficiency and energy management has been achieved through the application of innovative new technologies. For example, the latest version of Honda’s Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) is 23mm flatter and 1kg lighter than previous iterations, but with a higher cell count of 72 – the largest fitted to any of the current Honda e:HEV range. The slimline IPU sits under the rear seats, maximising interior space and usability.

A new Power Control Unit (PCU), located under the bonnet, enables the faster charge and discharge of electricity, contributing a further 12% increase in power output over previous e:HEV applications. The increase in power density and output of the PCU increases electrical output, allowing EV drive to take more of the load, and is handled by new aluminium-core high-voltage wiring. Aluminium wiring will contribute to 40% of weight reduction compared to conventional copper wiring.

The advanced powertrain shifts seamlessly between EV, hybrid and engine drive with no input from the driver. Four drive modes – Eco, Normal, Sport and a new Individual mode – can be selected by the driver to tailor the vehicle’s response in the area of powertrain, steering and display.

This engaging flexibility is underpinned with exceptional levels of refinement, with close attention paid to eliminating unwanted noise and vibration. A secondary balancer shaft, and high rigidity crankshaft within the internal combustion engine ensure smooth running, whilst unwanted engine noise has been countered through the increased application of insulation on the intake manifold and engine cover. In addition to these steps, clever application of Active Noise Control (ANC) further limits any noises that could resonate into the cabin, whilst Active Sound Control (ASC) heightens the sporty tones of the internal combustion unit.

Complimenting the exceptional power output is the chassis’ design. The Civic e:HEV has been developed with particular focus on steering response and feedback, heightening the driver’s sense of connection with the car. Improved stability in a straight line and over uneven road surfaces has been achieved thanks to a 35mm longer wheelbase and an 18mm wider rear track compared to the car’s predecessor. Cornering stability and overall input response has been further improved with increased body rigidity and the application of low friction ball joints and revised front dampers; combining to enhance the dynamic feel.

To enhance driving pleasure and response a new control logic, ‘winding control’, ensures that the internal combustion engine’s operation is maintained during cornering on twisting roads. This enables the car to deliver instant acceleration, providing a truly dynamic sensation when accelerating. On the highway, the additional torque and electric drive provides powerful overtaking acceleration when at high speed but with reduced engine revving noise, for relaxed long-distance travel.

“This is the latest generation of our industry-leading e:HEV technology, which itself is the culmination of over 20 years experience of designing, building and refining hybrid drive systems,” said Tomoyuki Yamagami, Large Project Leader for the all-new Civic e:HEV. “By carefully assessing the broad range of use-cases and operational environments, we have been able to take a ‘whole vehicle’ approach, making it a fun, highly compelling and engaging driver’s hybrid.”

ALL-NEW HONDA CIVIC TAKES CENTRE STAGE AT MILAN DESIGN WEEK

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/371634/all-new-honda-civic-takes-centre-stage-at-milan-design-week-2?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_5427&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

All-new Honda Civic attends Milan Design week in conjunction with Vanity Fair
Civic adopts a human-centred approach to both interior and exterior design
Longer wheelbase, wider track and lower roof line give a coupe-like silhouette
Smooth, clean lines and sporty shape creates a familiar yet fresh appearance
Intelligent packaging amplifies sense of airiness resulting in a spacious cabin

To celebrate the European launch of the all-new Honda Civic e:HEV, the car took centre stage at the Vanity Fair ‘Social Garden’ exhibition at Milan Design Week 2022.

“Vanity Fair always strives to look one step ahead with curiosity and a revolutionary spirit: this Design Week, we are delighted to welcome to our VF Social Garden creative and dynamic minds whose contributions improve the quality of our lives and make them easier, without overlooking the environmental impact of what they create,” explains Vanity Fair Co-Director, Cristina Lucchini

“We are delighted to be able to share the Civic with the Italian public for the first time. The response to the car so far has been outstanding and hosting at Milan Design Week provides an opportunity to engage with design-focused customers,” explains Italy General Manager Automobile Division, Simone Mattogno.

Honda’s all-new 11th-generation Civic has been engineered with a unique human-centred approach to dynamics and design. Following the ‘exhilarating Civic’ development ethos, Honda engineers focused on how exterior and interior packaging can work together to create a more comfortable and refreshing in-car experience that will enhance owners’ everyday lives.

First introduced in 1972 as a ‘car for people of the world’, the Civic has become the basis of Honda’s ‘Man-Maximum, Machine-Minimum’ (M/M) development principle. Now found across the Honda product portfolio, this direction follows the belief that the purpose of vehicle technology and design is to serve the needs of the driver and passengers. In the latest Civic the result is a cabin with greater comfort, visibility and spaciousness than ever before, in addition to enhanced safety and greater driver engagement.

Dynamic exterior design

Honda’s ‘exhilarating’ development approach has created a modern evolution of the Civic’s exterior design, that also echoes the noiseless, elegant design direction of other recent Honda models. The new Civic features a lower, sleeker roof line, and a lower belt line that increases the glasshouse, improving outward visibility and delivering the same sense of airiness experienced inside the original Civic.

To create the sportier, coupe-like aesthetic, the new Civic’s wheelbase is 35mm longer than the previous model, but with a 20mm shorter rear overhang, and reduced overall height. The highest point of the roof line is set further forward than the previous model, with a gentle slope to the tailgate completing its sleek look.

“The key element in this design, is the design of the rear roof end. In fact, we considered various patterns,” explains Hitomaro Asano, Civic Exterior Designer. “We considered an extra window type with two panes of glass and the so-called hatchback style. In such a situation, we thought that the design that would make people feel good or exhilarated the moment they see it. It should not have a weak form, but one that looks as if it has been drawn in a single stroke.”

The resin tailgate, developed through a new manufacturing technology, reduces the tailgate weight by 20% compared to its predecessor and is crucial for achieving the sleeker design. This approach to restrained, smooth design is also apparent around the front of the car; in comparison to the previous generation the hood and front fenders are lower by 25mm, with the A-pillars 50mm further rearward, giving the driver impressive, uninterrupted visibility. This reduced frontal mass also has the effect of making the wheels and tyres appear larger, which, combined with the wider rear track and wheel arch hemming, creates a lower, more assured stance and projects a sense of greater agility.

“The main aim was to give this new Civic a sporty and youthful appearance, which is the basis of the model,” continues Asano. “So, we tried to create a very bold face, while making the upper area look as thin as possible,” adds Asano. “This is also a story of successive generations, but as the face of the Civic has changed, I looked for something in common, and I found one thing. They all had a face where the upper grille was a bit lower and the headlights were a bit higher, so we tried to incorporate the grille and the headlights in the same position as in previous generations.”

 Enhanced interior comfort and convenience

Inside the cabin, Honda’s M/M development principle is exemplified by a human-centred interior that has been designed to ensure premium levels of refinement and spaciousness. The cabin has greater visibility and airiness thanks to the low, flat dashboard, external mirror positioning and large windows all-round.

“When we all came up with the keyword 'exhilarating' for the design concept, we started thinking about how we could apply that to the interior, and we came up with the idea of what would happen if we cut it by time, for example,” says Yasunori Ogawa, Civic Interior Designer. “We thought that if we could have a refreshing morning, a pleasant morning, we would feel good all day long. It is difficult to feel good all day long, but if we focus on the morning, we can achieve this. During our research, three keywords emerged: cleanliness, rhythm and stimulation.”

What this translates to, is an interior design that embodies the same clean, modern design philosophy as the exterior; with an uncluttered, user-focused layout featuring high quality materials and tactile touchpoints that enhance the experience for drivers and passengers.

Despite the lower roofline, interior headroom and cabin space remain the same as the previous model, thanks to the clever packaging of hybrid components into the chassis and engine bay. The new Civic’s generous cargo area has the same load capacity as before – among the largest in its segment – but with a wider tailgate aperture for improved usability. The result is a vehicle with the space and functionality to make it a viable alternative to larger vehicles such as SUVs.

“The tailgate hinges are located around the back of the rear passenger’s head, and this is inevitably a hard point and a bottleneck, so it's not easy to lower the roofline,” adds Asano. “Of course, there are ways to make the design work at the expense of the package, but neither Civic nor Honda want to sacrifice the package by any means. We made this a common understanding among everyone in interior design, exterior design and packaging, and then started to work out how to do it.

We started by talking about bringing the hinge position to the outside of the pillar. As for the cutline, when we imagined a noiseless cabin, if we put a cutline in the middle of the C-pillar, for example, it would ruin it all at once. We definitely don't want to split the line that flows from the front to the back all the way through, so we proposed to go around to the quarter glass, and everyone, including the designers, decided to go for it.”

Continuing the design focus on attention to detail are the innovative air outlets positioned around the interior. They enable a wider yet less intrusive flow of air around the cabin, whilst a premium look has been achieved by applying a honeycomb mesh pattern on the full-width air vent aperture

“One of the key words for the interior design of Civic is ‘cleanliness.’ This is a personal impression, but it's something I've felt since I joined the industry that I don't like the presence of the air conditioning outlets in the instrument panel,” explains Ogawa. “In the old days in Japan, trains had fans. I can't help but see the contents of the AC outlet as just that. But if you look at home interiors, for example, all these things are hidden in plain sight. Using those key ideas for the design of Civic, I have introduced a honeycomb pattern across the dashboard to give a high-quality finish but also cleanliness throughout the interior.”

Great focus has been placed on designing an environment that requires little physical movement by occupants once seated. The infotainment system is positioned in the peripheral view of the driver, meaning that to check information they do not have to physically move their head – reducing distractions, and time not looking ahead, enhancing safety.

“We took an interesting approach to development this time, and from the early stages of development, we dynamically verified the volume framework and the height of the HMI by applying various pastes to the actual car on the Honda facility site to check the ergonomic layout and how easy it is to interact with controls as well as see what visibility would be good,” explains Ogawa.

The Civic has set new benchmarks ever since its launch fifty years ago, selling more than 27.5 million units across 170 countries. The all-new version arrives in Europe from autumn 2022.

CIVIC CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/403568/civic-celebrates-its-50th-anniversary?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_5522&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Honda has developed 11 generations of the Civic since 1972 and has sold more than 27.5 million units globally
Core principles of the first generation Civic have continued to influence this iconic model
All-new Civic e:HEV completes Honda’s commitment to electrify all its mainstream models in Europe by 2022
Type R variant remains the benchmark for front-wheel drive hatchback performance

This year Honda is celebrating 50 years of its iconic Civic. Developed as a ‘car for the world’, more than 27.5 million Civics have been sold in 170 countries since the model was first launched in 1972. As it enters its sixth decade with the launch of the 11th generation, the Civic continues to set new class benchmarks and exceed the expectations of customers around the world.

The Civic’s enduring popularity is testament to the pioneering work of Honda engineers over the past half a century. Each generation has introduced its own progressive evolution of the original Civic design, advanced technologies and new levels of performance, while maintaining the same purpose as the first Civic: a spacious, fun to drive and economical compact car.
Civic celebrates its 50th Anniversary

1972 – 1979: A Civic for all citizens

The first Civic was developed as a global car for all markets, offering exceptional practicality in everyday driving. It was one of the first Honda cars to be sold in Europe, achieving instant acclaim for its compact design, impressive fuel economy and usability. Equipped with a revolutionary Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion (CVCC) engine, the Civic became the first vehicle to comply with the world's strictest emission regulations, the 1970 Clean Air Act, setting the standard for future emissions targets across the global automotive industry. The first generation Civic was first produced in Suzuka Factory, Japan. Accumulated production volume reached 1 million units within the first four years.

Into the 80s: Civic comes of age

In 1979 the second generation Civic arrived along with an improved CVCC-II engine, building on the success of the original Civic with a 1.3 litre engine that offered a smoother delivery of power as well as being more economical. The range of models was also extended with a 1.5 litre sedan, hatchback and wagon also offered. A five-speed manual transmission was also added to the line-up. The model introduced a new distinctive two-box trapezoidal design with the front grille and headlights getting a more angular look. However, this shape was short lived as the Civic grew in popularity and a new model was required to meet consumer demand for larger cars.

The third generation Civic arrived in 1983 with a wider wheelbase and a more angular design. It is notable for the introduction of Honda’s ‘Man Maximum-Machine Minimum’ principle, a human-centric approach to design that ensures the technology and layout served the needs of the driver and passengers. Today, this principle still helps define all Honda models, to help deliver the space and usability expected by modern drivers.

It was available in three body styles: a three-door that emphasised sporty driving, a more practical four-door sedan, and a five-door Civic Shuttle station wagon that offered exceptional space and utility. A sportier Civic Si variant was also introduced with a 1.6 litre DOHC series inline four-cylinder engine.

1987 – 2000: New standards of quality and performance

In 1987, the fourth generation Civic introduced a new range of engine options featuring Honda’s VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) system. Its variable timing mechanism revolutionised engine technology, delivering greater performance at high revs and improved fuel consumption at low revs – landing the Civic several awards.

The fifth generation Civic quickly followed in 1991, debuting a sleeker and more aerodynamic form, for a sportier appeal – while maintaining the everyday functionality the car had become synonymous with. The sixth generation Civic was developed to create a higher value than its class. In 1990s, lower fuel consumption and other environmental actions became more significant. As such, this model had a newly developed VTEC engine. It also featured ‘Hondamatic Transmission’ an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) for the first time, which offered seamless gear changes and manual-like economy.

Building on the exceptional dynamic capabilities of the standard Civic, Honda debuted the performance-focused Type R variant in 1997. With a focus on delivering the most extreme performance yet seen from Civic, it became the catalyst for 25 years of success for Honda in the competitive hot hatch sector.

2001 – 2021: The millennial Civic

The seventh generation arrived in 2000 and became the first Civic to offer hybrid technology in 2001.

This Civic recorded the world's most fuel-efficient 5-seater production gasoline vehicle with ultra-high fuel economy of 29.5km/l.

In 2005, the eighth generation hatchback arrived with futuristic styling for European markets, a Perspex grille and triangular accents – including the dual tailpipes - that made it one of the most distinctive vehicles on the road. It was also the first generation of Civic to feature Honda’s Magic Seats, where the rear seat cushions can be raised to create a tall loading area. This was enabled by engineers situating the fuel tank beneath the front seats – a blueprint for achieving interior space and usability still followed today in various Honda models.

The ninth generation Civic added further refinement to create a well-rounded package for customers, including class-leading efficiency. Featuring a revised 1.6 DTEC engine, the vehicle achieved a Guinness World Records title for the ‘Lowest fuel consumption – all 24 contiguous EU countries (all cars)’, recording an average 2.82 litres per 100km (100.31mpg) over 13,498km (8,387 miles), in a 25 day drive across all 24 EU contiguous countries.

A completely remodelled 10th generation arrived in 2015 with a choice of two VTEC TURBO engines and incorporated advanced safety features and driver aids, Honda SENSING, for the first time. Engineered with a stiffer chassis and greater dynamic performance, it provided the perfect platform for the 2017 Civic Type R, which set new performance boundaries for high-performance hatchbacks. The car was universally praised for its direct handling, instant throttle response, high top speed, stability and exceptional stopping power - all of which contributed to the Type R setting a new benchmark lap time for front-wheel drive cars at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany in April 2017.
ALL-NEW HONDA CIVIC e:HEV TO DELIVER EXCEPTIONAL DYNAMICS AND EFFICIENCY AS STANDARD

2022: A new era of Civic

Building on 50 years of heritage, the 11th generation Civic blends strong performance and efficiency with improved levels of interior comfort, visual appeal and overall usability. The latest iteration marks a major milestone for Honda in Europe, as it’s the latest model in the range to be electrified, completing Honda Motor Europe’s 2022 ‘Electric Vision’ commitment to electrify all mainstream models It features the most advanced iteration of the brand’s multiple award winning e:HEV full-hybrid powertrain system as standard, offering engaging dynamics and performance with impressive economy and efficiency.

“Ever since the first generation, that launched to such great acclaim, the Honda Civic has been an iconic model for European customers,” said Tom Gardner Senior Vice President at Honda Motor Europe Ltd. “The 11th generation encapsulates the core characteristics of functionality, usability and comfort from the very first generation Civic. It has been engineered to ensure that its powertrain, steering and suspension deliver the engaging levels of performance, dynamic response and feedback that have always been central to the Civic’s appeal.”

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/407784/honda-unveils-all-new-civic-type-r?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_5560&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

New Civic Type R builds on 25 years of ultimate hot hatch performance
Performance-focused upgrades deliver the ultimate Type R driving experience
Latest generation recently set new front-wheel drive lap record at Suzuka
Available to customers in Europe from early 2023

Honda has unveiled the all-new Civic Type R as it celebrates 25 years of the brand’s iconic high-performance hatchback – and 50 years of Civic. The new Type R has been engineered to deliver the most exhilarating Civic Type R experience to date, building on a long tradition of performance cars inspired by the spirit of racing.

Available in Europe from early 2023, the Civic Type R is already setting new benchmarks, recently breaking the front-wheel drive lap record at Suzuka Circuit in Japan. As part of its development, Honda engineers refined every aspect of the new model, including design enhancements that improve aerodynamic performance. Lightweight components and powertrain revisions have created the most responsive and powerful Type R ever.

“With the all-new Civic Type R, Honda engineers have again delivered on our goal to create the most rewarding driving experience in the performance hatchback segment,” said Tom Gardner, Senior Vice President, Honda Motor Europe. “Through exceptional advancements and the application of motorsport-derived technologies, we have exceeded the capabilities of even the stripped out, lightweight version of the previous model. It is this dedication to performance excellence that has made the Civic Type R so popular with driving purists for 25 years.”

Powerful aerodynamic design

Developed under the model concept of creating the “Ultimate Sports 2.0,” the new Type R builds on sleek and sporty silhouette of the recently revealed Honda Civic e:HEV. To enhance the sportier look and elevate driving performance, the Type R is noticeably lower and wider in stance. The squat form is enhanced through wheel arches that flare out over lightweight 19-inch matte black alloy wheels, shod with bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.

During development, Honda engineers worked to the concept of creating the “Ultimate Sports Design”: The ultimate expression of a high-performance, front-engine, front-wheel-drive car. The exterior design now conveys a sense of unity, with uncluttered details on the front and rear bumpers as well as beautifully integrated design features such as the rear doors and arches, which have all been exclusively developed for the Type R and bring improved aerodynamic benefits.

The large lower grille of the front bumper maximises airflow to the engine, and works in unison with the new, subtle bonnet that now features a vent to again maximise airflow around the front end.

Other design details that help maximise aerodynamics include the large aperture vents behind the front wheels and a new, larger rear diffuser that is integrated directly into the under-floor - itself shaped to work in unison with the bodywork above.

The dramatic new rear spoiler design further contributes to downforce generation and has been angled rearward to suppress air resistance. Supported by new aluminium die-cast mounts, the rear wing sits lower but wider than the previous model, accentuating the sleek new roofline and wider stance.

Paint finish choices include the historic Championship White revered by Honda Type R enthusiasts, in addition to a solid Rallye Red, as well as Racing Blue, Crystal Black and Sonic Grey Pearls.

Immersive cockpit experience

The interior of the new model is dedicated to enhancing the exhilaration of driving and sharpening concentration levels. It maintains the high level of comfort, practicality and refinement found within the all-new Civic e:HEV, elevated by emotive, performance-focused details and features, such as the iconic classic Type R red trim.

The immersive cockpit is designed to support intense driving experiences: the driver sits lower than before, with greater visibility over the lower bonnet, blind spots minimised, and reflective elements reduced. The lightweight front sports seats with suede-effect upholstery offer exceptional support for the driver’s postural structure to provide comfort and manoeuvrability on the track and during long drives.

Drivers can seamlessly switch between performance settings, with pre-set modes for the engine, steering, suspension and engine sound. In addition to Comfort, Sport and +R modes, a new ‘Individual Mode’ has been introduced to enable customisation of the driving experience.

The powerful Honda LogR data logger returns in a heavily updated format for this generation of Type R, and now combines performance data collected by in-car sensors with a smartphone app to help drivers monitor and record a variety of metrics in real-time. Key features include a stopwatch to record lap times, tyre friction circles that displays the maximum tyre force the vehicle can achieve, 3D vehicle motion display, and an innovative scoring function that helps drivers improve their skills on the track and much more to engage with drivers and encourage safe, accurate and incrementally faster laps on track.

Performance-focused engineering enhancements

The Civic Type R is renowned for its powerful, highly responsive and high revving engines. The new model builds on the award-winning basis of its predecessor by evolving the 17YM Type-R’s famed engine even further to deliver the fastest, most addictive yet secure and rewarding drive in the model’s history.

Changes are incremental with the revised turbocharger now featuring a compact housing to improve the overall unit efficiency. The turbine itself has had both its blade count and shape optimized to boost power and improve airflow through the turbo. This has resulted in the strongest VTEC turbocharged engine in the Type R’s engine.

A revised, high-efficiency exhaust system works in conjunction with the above to improve the power-to-weight ratio, torque and top speed of the previous generation Type R and make the 2023 Civic Type R one of the most powerful per litre cars in its class.

Helping drivers feel connected to their car is an optimised version of the six-speed manual transmission that helped the previous generation enamour fans around the world. A revised rev-match system with auto blip ensures perfectly paired rev-matching when shifting down through the gears, helping balance the car on corner entry. The high-strength gearbox has gained a high-rigidity lever and optimized shift gate pattern for a reassured and hyper-precise gear change.

The upgraded Brembo braking system retains the two-piece discs from the previous generation for improved feel and longevity. The new car features enhanced temperature control and air-cooling through an upgraded radiator, ensuring sustained, optimal performance during heavy use. A new triple-exhaust design with enhanced sound modulation enhances the aural sensation, further strengthening the driver’s connection with the car.

The all-new Honda Civic Type R will go on sale on next year, with first deliveries to customers beginning in Europe from early 2023.

HONDA CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF THE CIVIC TYPE R

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/410190/honda-celebrates-25-years-of-the-civic-type-r?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_5632&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Introduced in 1997, Civic Type R has been continuously refined to deliver the ultimate front-engine, front-wheel drive experience
The Type R name has been synonymous with delivering an unmistakable mix of enthralling dynamics and high-performance engines
Crimson Honda badge has now been applied to six generations of Civic
Latest variant becomes the performance halo of the Honda range

Honda’s iconic Civic is celebrating two anniversaries this year: 50 years of continuous production and 25 years of the high-performance, race-derived Type R variant, which rewrote the rulebook on what a hot hatch should be. Despite being born as the more attainable Type R, the Civic variants embody the Type R philosophy the maximum thanks to exquisite engineering and engaging dynamics. Over six generations, the formula has evolved to deliver the ultimate front engine, front wheel drive performance hatchback to customers. One that can comfortably handle the daily commute from Monday to Friday, before tackling the circuit at weekends.

HONDA CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF THE CIVIC TYPE R

EK9 (1997-2000): An affordable, accessible Type R for all

The Type R nameplate can be traced back to the 1992 Honda NSX Type R, which raised the bar on performance and dynamic ability, but was only available in extremely limited numbers. Applying the Type R philosophy to the Civic followed a similar engineering ethic to the Integra and NSX to offer an engaging, rewarding drive. The EK9 was offered to the Japanese market only and had a high-end specification; including a hand-ported 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC engine that produced a highly impressive 116bhp-per—litre, a lightweight seam-welded shell that contributed to a total vehicle weight of just 1050kg, paired with a helical Limited Slip Differential (LSD), and unique suspension components to completely transform the driving experience. Launched to outstanding reviews, the EK9 set in motion the pursuit of the ultimate front-engine, front wheel drive performance hatchback.

HONDA CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF THE CIVIC TYPE R

EP3 (2001 – 2005) A European take on the Type R

As a result of the overwhelming success of the first-generation car, the second-generation was offered across Europe; thanks, in part, to now being manufactured in the United Kingdom. The new car introduced an all-new, and now iconic 2.0-liter DOHC i-VTEC ‘K’ series engine that redefined what a normally aspirated two-litre engine could do. It too featured uprated brakes, a precise, close-ratio six-speed transmission and a shell that made extensive use of high-tensile steel to increase torsional static rigidity by 80% over the EK9. Toe-control link strut suspension in the front and reactive-link double-wishbone suspension at the rear combined with new electric power steering (EPS) and variable gear ratio (VGR) for highly rewarding steering feel and feedback.

HONDA CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF THE CIVIC TYPE R

FN2/ FD2 (2007-2011) Type R – two ways

The third generation Civic Type R was unique in that the European and Japanese models differed dramatically. Europe received the FN2-based hatchback, which retained the proven 2.0-liter engine, but introduced a new chassis that moved the fuel tank beneath the front seats to improve interior space and flexibility. Japanese customers were instead offered the FD2 saloon, which offered an even more focused driving experience thanks to additional items such as a more powerful K20A engine, a helical LSD and powerful Brembo brakes. The saloon’s increased weight was countered by extensive use of structural adhesives instead of welding, and aluminium in both the chassis and panels.

HONDA CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF THE CIVIC TYPE R

FK2 (2015-2017) Introducing the VTEC TurboA

As market and regulatory expectations shifted, the move toward turbocharging was inevitable. Honda engineers worked meticulously to develop the K20C1 turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that offered explosive performance thanks to a 310PS output. In order to better control that significant increase in power, Honda introduced its Dual Axis Strut Suspension paired with a limited-slip differential to counter the torque-steer encountered in high output front wheel drive cars. The 2015 Civic Type-R sprinted from 0-100km/h in just 5.7 seconds and came equipped with large diameter (351mm) front discs that formed part of the high-performance Brembo braking system. The FK2 proved a formidable base for a competition car, winning several TCR Touring Car titles across the globe.

HONDA CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF THE CIVIC TYPE R

FK8 (2017-2022) The Ultimate Sports hatchback

Arriving in 2017, the FK8 was the ultimate evolution of the Civic Type R. A significant evolution of the FK2, the new car gained a host of new mechanical features such as adaptive dampers, and further revisions to the K20C1 engine to boost power to 320PS. The model also introduced downforce to the equation for an even more intense drive; the external aerodynamic package worked in unison with an advanced, almost flat underfloor, to actively contribute to negative lift. The model also made its debut in the United States, with the region leading global sales for the car.

HONDA CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF THE CIVIC TYPE R

FL5 (2022-) Ultimate Sports 2.0

Launching later this year, the all-new generation car further evolves, matures, and refines technologies that have been developed over several generations. Whilst new technologies and refined aerodynamics have helped set the bar higher once again, a clear lineage can be traced back to the FD2 generation with the incremental revisions resulting in the fastest, most rewarding and addictive Civic Type R ever built. Already the track record holder at Suzuka, the 2022 Civic Type R is a fitting way to celebrate 30 years of the Type R nameplate.

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/429857/all-new-honda-civic-ehev-achieves-top-five-star-score-in-latest-euro-ncap-tests?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_6034&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

All-new Civic e:HEV features the latest, enhanced Honda SENSING™ technologies, including sonar sensors and front wide view camera for all round safety
New structural components built in to the Civic’s chassis and body help improve front, rear, and side collision protection
Complementing the improved structure of Civic are eleven airbags, including a new front centre airbag for increased occupant protection
Honda’s commitment to achieving zero road fatalities involving its products by 2050 ensures the Civic remains one of the safest car in its class

The all-new Honda Civic e:HEV has been awarded the maximum five-star rating in the latest Euro NCAP safety tests. Embodying Honda’s commitment to zero road fatalities involving any of its products by 2050, the 11th generation Civic features a number of improved and upgraded technologies to achieve one of the highest level of passenger and pedestrian safety in its class.

To meet stringent Euro NCAP crash impact safety standards for Adult Occupant Protection, the Civic’s body incorporates a number of structural braces to enhance the overall passive safety of the vehicle. This includes additional front door stiffeners and rear wheel arch frames that improve side impact performance. These are joined by a full-width brace that supports the joining edge between the floor and resin bulkhead, to help control and limit deformation in the event of a head on or offset frontal collision.

In addition to the stronger, more protective chassis, all trim variants of the new Civic incorporate a total of 11 airbags as standard, including knee airbags for both front occupants to reduce injury during front impacts and side airbags to protect front and rear seat passengers. A front centre airbag features for the first time, which prevents a collision between the driver and front passenger during a side impact.

This level of protection is extended to all occupants of the all-new Civic, not just adults. The car also scored well in the Child Occupant Protection category thanks to the integrated ISOFIX mounting points that conform to the latest European i-Size standards.

The 11th generation Civic is also considerate of vulnerable road users and pedestrians and is fitted with newly designed front bumper beam safety plates. These are designed to absorb impact energy, reducing the risk of leg fractures and knee ligament damage for pedestrians in the event of a collision. This protection is bolstered through the application of a pop-up hood, lined with an embossed membrane structure beneath the outer surface. This hidden component boasts highly efficient energy absorption properties should a pedestrian’s head strike the outer surface, dramatically reducing the risk of severe injury.

Honda SENSING

The passive safety features on the all-new Civic are complemented by an enhanced Honda SENSING™ suite of active safety and driver assist technologies. This incorporates new sonar sensors that use sound waves to detect non-metallic objects such as glass and walls far more reliably and with far greater accuracy than the millimetre wave radar that was previously used.

The new Civic is also fitted with a wider 100-degree view camera, which improves the car’s capability to identify road lines, verges, motorcycles, and cyclists. In addition, a new high-speed processing chip improves the detection, performance, and control of the system, meaning it can identify objects earlier and more accurately than before, including pedestrians in light and dark environments.

Included within Honda’s expansive SENSING offering is an improved Forward Collision Warning System, which is designed to detect the presence of vehicles in front and issue audible, visual and tactile alerts to alert the driver if approaching with too much speed. If the driver fails to respond, the Collision Mitigation Braking System is triggered, which automatically applies light brake pressure to help reduce the likelihood or severity of a frontal impact. If the system senses imminent collision, it will now brake forcefully.

The new Honda Civic joins the CR-V and Jazz in being awarded the maximum five-star score by Euro NCAP.

HONDA TECHNOLOGY READY TO SUPPLY FREQUENCY CONTAINMENT RESERVE FOR POWER GRID STABILIZATION

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/429858/honda-technology-ready-to-supply-frequency-containment-reserve-for-power-grid-stabilzation?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_6048&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Honda and Next Kraftwerke successfully finish proof of concept project
Fleet of Honda e and Honda Power Managers acquire certification for Frequency Containment Reserve using CCS charging standard
Honda and Next Kraftwerke prove value of how electric vehicles can enable grid stability

Honda’s advanced research and development division, Honda R&D Europe (Deutschland) GmbH, has made a significant breakthrough in vehicle to grid (V2G) technology. In a pilot with Next Kraftwerke GmbH, one of Europe’s largest Virtual Power Plant (VPP) operators, Honda has become the first automaker in Europe to achieve certification of a fleet of mass produced EVs, for the prequalification of frequency containment reserve (FCR) by Ampiron GmbH in Germany.

When reacting to short-term frequency deviations in the power grid, service operators rely on balancing services that automatically intervene to restore the balance between supply and demand. Of these balancing services, FCR is the highest performance class for grid stabilisation and is also referred to as primary control reserve as it is the first response to frequency disturbances.

The pilot utilized mass production Honda e EVs, which qualified for support of grid stability through the instant provision of FCR to the Transmission System Operator (TSO). A fleet of 6 Honda e’s and 6 Honda Power Manager bi-directional CCS chargers were used during the trial, in which Honda was able to fulfil the high requirements for charging and discharging, necessary to ensure stable 50Hz grid frequency.

Using real-time information from Next Kraftwerke about current power capacity, Honda’s own power management system is able to respond within required standard time to charging and discharging commands of the TSO to each individual vehicle, while respecting the single SOC preferences of the individual EV driver.

This development is a vital step for advancing the role of EVs and bi-directional charging technology in any future sustainable energy system. Maintaining a consistent grid stability, will become one of the major challenges for the TSOs alongside with the further expansion of renewable energy sources.

“The project with Next Kraftwerke enables Honda to meet the new demands of the European market and deliver on its commitment to develop technologies that are creating value for  society,” said Tom Gardner, Senior Vice President, Honda Motor Europe. “Typically, EVs are parked and connected to a charging station for most of the day, at offices and on driveways. Honda has identified that these standing times can be better utilised to offer additional services and revenues, through smart charging and discharging based on the current power grid frequency. This not only benefits EV owners, but also the surrounding infrastructure as we transition into an e-mobility-driven society.”

Honda Power Manager
Honda Power Manager is a bidirectional system that connects EVs to a smart power grid, enabling the collection and distribution of electricity between the two. This allows for intelligent balancing of the supply and demand of energy, including the better use of renewable sources. This not only regulates power to stabilise the grid during periods of high demand and minimise bottlenecks in the distribution of energy, but also reduces the need for expensive grid expansions as the demand for EV charging increases.

In a recent trial, Honda partnered with the V2X Suisse consortium to demonstrate the vital role of EVs and bidirectional charging technology in the future of energy management. The company supplied 50 Honda e cars and 35 Honda Power Manager units to support the pioneering trial, which delivered vehicle-to-grid (V2X) energy recovery capability for car sharing operator, Mobility, at sites across Switzerland.

Honda e

The Honda e is a multi award-winning all electric vehicle. The stylish city car has a number of unique features such as its lounge inspired interior, seamless connectivity and the latest Honda SENSING suite of advanced driver assistance systems. With a WLTP range of 120 miles and rapid charge capability, the Honda e is designed for everyday life

Introduction: 25 years of ultimate hot hatch performance

Power has increased, with the strongest VTEC Turbo in Type R history
Performance-focused upgrades create the ultimate Type R driving experience
Functional yet beautiful design enhances performance and aesthetics
Has already set a new front-wheel drive lap record at Suzuka

The launch of the all-new Civic Type R comes as Honda celebrates 25 years of its iconic high-performance hatchback – and 50 years of Civic. The next-generation model has been engineered to deliver the fastest Civic Type R to date, building on a long tradition of performance cars inspired by the spirit of racing.

Building on the human-centred approach to dynamics, design and usability applied when developing the 11th generation Civic, Honda engineers have refined every aspect to create the Civic Type R. Integrated design enhancements including a functional hood vent and a new rear diffuser that bring new aerodynamic benefits, whilst complementing the sporty silhouette. The Type R is also lower and wider than the standard Civic, with a new rear spoiler design accentuating the sleek roofline and contributing to the car’s aerodynamic performance and muscular appearance.

Lightweight components and an increase in power from the 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine combine to create one of the highest power-to-weight ratio in its class. A revised rev-match system with auto blip ensures that gear changes with the six-speed manual transmission offer drivers a rewarding experience.

Inside, the Type R features the evocative red interior, lightweight sport seats and driver-focused controls that distinguish all performance Hondas. In addition to pre-set driver modes, a new Individual mode enables new levels of customisation for drivers, enabling them to personalise vehicle characteristics such as throttle response and steering feedback. The onboard Honda Log R datalogger has improved monitoring and an innovative scoring function to help drivers improve their performance on the track.

As with all Honda Type R models, the Civic Type R wears the brand’s iconic crimson red ‘H’ badge that is inspired by the spirit of Honda racing. This stretches back to 1965 with the success of the RA272 Formula 1™ car at the Mexican Grand Prix, which sported white livery with a red rising sun on the nose. Honda continues to push the boundaries of performance in motorsport, with the latest generation Type R recently setting a new lap record for a front-wheel drive car at the world-famous Suzuka Circuit in Japan.

    Powerful aerodynamic exterior design

Exterior design enhancements bring new aerodynamic benefits
Wider track and flared wheel arches create a muscular stance
Sleek new rear spoiler design contributes to negative lift
Offered in a range of colour choices: Championship White, Rallye Red, Racing Blue, Crystal Black and Sonic Grey Pearls

Developed under the model concept of creating the “Ultimate Sports 2.0”, all aspects of the new Civic Type R have been reengineered to heighten the sense of driving exhilaration by improving aerodynamic performance and increasing downforce. Building on the sleek and stylish lines of the all-new Honda Civic, the Type R presents a more aggressive stance and greater road presence, which perfectly illustrates the vehicle’s fast, dynamic, and addictive nature.

The Civic Type R is 8mm lower and 90mm wider than the Civic e:HEV, and 13mm lower and 15mm wider than the previous generation Civic Type R. The low, muscular appearance is achieved through sculpted, muscular wheel arches that flare out over new reverse rim, lightweight and high rigidity 19-inch matte black alloy wheels. These unique Type R wheels are fitted with bespoke compound 265/30R/19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres all round.

The taught surfacing of the new car is all functional. Developed by exchanging technical information and ideas with select partners from Honda’s global network of racing suppliers - including WTCR supplier J.A.S. Motorsport and Super GT engineers from HRD’s Sakura facility – the engineers focused on using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to significantly reduce air resistance around the car. The result is a marked improvement in drag coefficient over the previous generation Civic Type R, more controlled airflow, and reduced pressure changes over and around the car.

Detail touches such as the front fenders, which feature a large duct behind the wheel, help reduce pressure within the wheelhouse. The escaping airflow from these ducts is guided down the length of the car and side sill, before being directed away from the rear wheel housing and overhang by the small spoiler at the end of the sill.

Working in conjunction with these elements are the wider rear arches – now fully integrated into the body for a smoother, cleaner finish that does not impact the rearward airflow. The arch shaping removes the previous generation’s pressure fluctuations around the rear door and presents the rear diffuser and spoiler with a cleaner flow of air.

The uncluttered, noiseless front bumper is an exaggeration of the Civic e:HEV’s basic design and shape. The lower grille has been extended in width and height to accommodate the large capacity intercooler, increasing airflow to both it and the front brakes. This aperture is 10% larger than the previous generation, resulting in Type R losing the Civic e:HEV’s foglight and surrounds – replacing them with stylised, thin vertical air intakes that help emphasis the width of the car and feed air to the front brakes.

To aid thermal management of the 2.0-litre VTEC Turbo engine, the aluminium hood now features a vent, which also works in conjunction with the large lower grille to optimise airflow and provide genuine negative lift over the front end.

At the rear, the new diffuser design works in combination with the new spoiler to further increase downforce while helping to suppress air resistance. Mounted to new aluminium die cast supports, the rear spoiler is wider and lower than on the previous model, helping accentuate the sleek new roof line. The positioning of the main beam of the spoiler has been optimised by rotating past horizontal, increasing generated downforce and reducing overall drag. Mounted part way up the resin boot-lid, the positioning of the wing also improves visibility from the car, as it aligns with the edge of the rear window.

The design of the lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels is also optimised to maximise the performance of the 265/30R19 profile Michelin tyres. A design evolution of the forged items fitted to the run-out Limited Edition model of the previous generation, the new wheels feature a stepless reverse rim design to improve rigidity. Their design improves handling by stabilizing contact pressure of the inner shoulder of the tyre when cornering. Visually, this also helps create the appearance of a larger diameter wheel.

All functional parts of the vehicle are finished in a high-gloss black, including the front grille, rear diffuser and central part of the rear spoiler, accentuating the performance focus of the car. The range of available paint colours honours the car’s racing heritage, including the iconic Championship White in addition to Rallye Red metallic, and Racing Blue, Crystal Black and Sonic Grey Pearls.

    A driver-focused cockpit experience

Performance-orientated cabin promotes driver engagement and concentration
Low mount lightweight sports seats provide exceptional support and comfort
Evocative red trim for the carpet and front seats follows Type R tradition
Bespoke graphical meter display relays focused performance driving data

The interior of the new Civic Type R is dedicated to enhancing the excitement of driving, from the moment the driver opens the door. Despite its track-focused character, the new Civic Type R maintains the high level of comfort, practicality and everyday usability that is the hallmark of the standard Civic.

The driver is positioned 8mm lower than in the previous Civic Type R and the latest 11th generation Civic, enhancing the sportscar feel. Newly designed lightweight front sports seats securely hold the driver at the waist, to support their postural structure and ensure comfort and manoeuvrability whether driving on the limit on track, or during longer drives on road. This enables the driver to easily find a natural driving position and provides a sensation of being directly connected to the car when cornering at speed.

With a reduced hip-point from ground, the body-hugging seats are central to an immersive cockpit experience. The entire cabin has been designed to enable high levels of concentration from the driver during intense driving experiences. All essential controls are placed within easy reach, with the main information display positioned as centrally as possible to allow the driver to maintain focus on the road.

Despite the low driving position, visibility from the driver’s seat is improved over the previous Type R. There are clear sight lines to the front corners of the bonnet, while blind spots have been minimised around the base of the A-pillars and side mirrors; helping drivers on both circuit and street. To minimise distraction, reflective elements in the driver’s eyeline have been reduced. In addition to the improved rearward visibility afforded by the new rear wing design, the flat shoulder line of the car enables a more intuitive perception of the car’s surroundings when using the wing mirrors.

The sense of drama is elevated by the iconic red trim that has adorned many extreme Honda machines in the past. The seats are finished in a new, more vivid high-grip suede-like upholstery at the front, whilst the rears are now finished in the same material but in a contrasting black finish with red stitching offering all occupants improved levels of support during high-speed driving. The interior carpet trim is now finished in matching red, stirring emotions of previous Type R models.

As with all of those generations, the new car also features a unique serial plate. This is now positioned on the dash, rather than the centre console of previous models, to highlight the exclusivity of the Type R experience. High-end finishing touches now adorn the cabin such as the genuine aluminium console and polarised gun metal air vent outlet surround, which not only add to the premium feel but also actively help reduce reflections.

The standard car’s all-digital meter display has also been enhanced for Type R, retaining the clean, simple dual-meter display for Comfort and Sport drive modes. Switching to +R mode engages a bespoke graphic set, which relays just the key information for focused, track driving. The full-width digital rev-counter sits atop displays of circuit driving data including vital temperatures, a lap timer and g-force meter. The newly introduced Individual mode allows users to tailor their preferred display layout.

Engineering the ultimate Civic Type R

Power is increased, thanks to the strongest VTEC Turbo in Type R history
Optimised six-speed manual transmission with a revised rev-match system
Refined chassis details offer improved handling and ride comfort
High levels of crash protection carried over from Civic e:HEV

The all-new Civic Type R follows a long line of iconic Type R models that have each raised the bar for front-wheel-drive sports car performance. Building on the capabilities of the previous model, the latest generation model incorporates new lightweight materials, increased engine performance and improved driving dynamics, resulting in the fastest, most dynamic and addictive Civic Type R yet.

The most powerful VTEC Turbo ever
Since the first generation launched in 1997, the Civic Type R has become renowned for its powerful, highly responsive, and high revving engines. The latest iteration continues this dedication to performance excellence that has made the Civic Type R so popular with driving purists for 25 years.

The new Civic Type R is powered by a revised 2.0 litre VTEC four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which features the application of several motorsport-derived technologies. These further improve the output, torque and response beyond the capabilities of even the lightweight Limited Edition version of the previous model.

The development team have redesigned the turbocharger to improve its efficiency. By reducing the number of turbo blades and optimising their shape and diameter, inertia within the unit has been reduced. A redesigned housing shape is smaller and more compact than its predecessor and further contributes to the higher output and responsiveness of the turbocharger.

A straight exhaust system increases the exhaust airflow rate by 13% over the previous model, reducing back pressure and allowing the engine to perform more efficiently. The system is finished with a newly designed triple-exit backbox that has an active valve to further increase exhaust gas flow. Enhancements to the sound modulation also improve the aural sensation to increase driver engagement.

The new car features enhanced temperature control and air-cooling through an upgraded radiator, ensuring sustained, optimal performance during heavy use thanks to the 48% larger opening offered by the new grille and front bumper design. A revised air intake is larger in diameter allowing for a 10% increase in intake flow rate.

All of this is managed by a revised engine control system, which has been updated by further increasing the resolution of the ignition timing control and tuning of the VTC (Variable Timing Control), to improve overall throttle response under acceleration.

The overall effect of the engine upgrades is higher performance at high revs and lower fuel consumption at low revs, and the highest power-to-weight ratio in its class. The engine produces 329PS @ 6,500rpm, whilst 420 Nm is available at just 2,200 rpm, and remains available up to 4,000 rpm, with the engine revving freely all the way to 7,000 rpm. The result is the Civic Type R can sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds, and on to a top speed of 275 km/h.

Helping achieve these figures is a revised six-speed manual transmission, that has a number of new features designed exclusively for the new Type R which significantly improves the smoothness and shifting load. A new lightweight flywheel is 18% lighter than the previous generations, reducing inertia by 25% helping the VTEC Turbo be even more responsive.

A revised rev-match system with auto blip ensures perfectly paired rev-matching when shifting down through the gears, helping balance the car on corner entry. Particular attention has been paid to the 2nd to 1st gear shift. The high-strength gearbox has also gained a high-rigidity lever, an optimised shift gate pattern as well as a unique to Type R shift link mechanism to improve shift smoothness. Feel has also been improved with an optimised spring rate for faster gear changes with more satisfying weighting.

Despite being the most powerful Civic Type R ever, Honda engineers have improved the emissions output and fuel efficiency of the vehicle. The result of the extensive technological advancements is just 186 g/km of CO2 emissions, with fuel economy of 8.2 l/100kms (WLTP).

Lightweight, rigid chassis tuned for addictive performance
The latest generation Civic has been engineered to ensure that its chassis, steering, and suspension deliver superior levels of performance, dynamic response, and feedback in all driving situations. It was developed with a particular focus on precise steering feedback and a more planted ride, to increase the driver’s sense of connection with the car – an effect that is heightened in the all-new Type R.

The 35mm longer wheelbase, compared to the previous Type R, and multilink rear suspension of the base car are paired with a significantly wider rear track to offer improved cornering stability over its predecessor. This has been refined through repeated testing on both the Autobahn and the Nürburgring.

The dual-axis front suspension, a configuration to minimise torque steer, has been revised with new lower suspension arms optimised in shape and rigidity to achieve a 16% increase in camber rigidity over the previous generation Type R. The front also features millimetre revised geometry to accommodate for the 265/30R19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres and increased engine torque.

The adaptive dampers have been retained from the previous generation but feature a revised control logic for roll and pitch control.

A 15% increase in rear body rigidity over the previous Civic model further improves stability when cornering. To help realise the stiffer body, Honda has significantly increased the application of structural adhesive throughout the chassis. 3.8 times the amount of adhesive has been used in comparison to the previous Type R, with engineers applying the coating around key areas such as the bulkhead, door apertures and rear suspension turrets.

The increased application of structural adhesive is symbolic of the weight optimisation the Civic development team also focused on. The aluminium bonnet of the new Civic is 43% lighter than the previous model’s steel panel, while the resin tailgate is 20% lighter than before. The strategic use of lighter materials, combined with structural improvements, has resulted in a lightweight yet highly rigid body.

Stopping power is provided by an upgraded Brembo braking system featuring revised brake ducts and a new mechanical brake master cylinder. These provide better temperature control while ensuring improved controllability and enduring stopping power, whilst the two-part floating discs are retained from the previous generation for sustained high level braking performance.

Addictive steering feel

When developing the Type R’s steering, engineers wanted to encourage smooth driving, with minimal corrective inputs required from the driver. This has been achieved through a number of revisions to core hardware. The steering column now features bearings that have gone through a honing process for improved rigidity and longevity, the tie-rod ends are now also made from a high-rigidity material for increased steering feel, and the sliding section of the intermediate shaft now features serrations for more defined engagement.

Thanks to the application of a revised EPS control logic, a larger diameter, 60% more rigid, torsion bar could now be applied to the column, as well as high-rigidity tie rods, to reduce unwanted steering deflections, in order to decrease steering input delay for outstanding feedback and response.

The Motor Control Unit (MCU) has been carried over from the Civic e:HEV but with a revised control logic. This has improved on centre response and off-centre stability for a more responsive, yet linear feel throughout the steering range.

These new functions will be added to the current Honda SENSING 360 and applied sequentially on a global basis starting in 2024.

As the next generation technologies of Honda SENSING Elite, Honda also announced newly developed functions based on the enhanced recognition and understanding technologies achieved by the utilization of Honda’s original AI technologies. These new functions will assist the driver in achieving a safe and seamless ride from home to their destination with complete peace of mind on any roads, now including non-expressways.

As for future plans, Honda is striving to equip all of its new automobile models globally with Honda SENSING (including the 360 and Elite variations) with a motorcycle detection function by 2030. Moreover, Honda will strive to equip all new models in all major markets with Honda SENSING 360 by 2030, while also continuing to advance Honda SENSING functions. Through these initiatives, Honda is aiming to reduce global traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles by half by 2030.

Honda is striving for zero traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles globally by 2050. By leveraging strengths unique to a company that conducts both motorcycle and automobile business in the research and development of safety technologies, Honda will work sincerely toward the realization of a collision-free society for everyone sharing the road.

In addition to the current Honda SENSING 360 technologies that assist the driver to avoid collisions, Honda will add the following new technologies to further reduce driver burden by reducing the risk of collisions collisions through accurate detection of abnormal conditions occurring to the driver and the vehicle’s surroundings.  By reducing health-related or human error-triggered collisions with these new technologies, Honda will strive to offer vehicles which encourage customers to want to go out more actively and go farther on their vehicles.

These new Honda SENSING 360 technologies will be added to the current Honda SENSING 360 sequentially in accordance with customer needs in each region.

The system reduces driver burden by operating the accelerator, brake pedal and steering wheel to assist the driver to maintain proper vehicle speed and stay in the lane even while the driver takes hands off the steering wheel. When there is no car in front of the vehicle, the system drives the vehicle along the middle of the lane while maintaining the pre-set vehicle speed. For turning, the system detects the curvature of the lane in advance and assists the driver in smooth cornering by reducing vehicle speed in accordance with the detected curvature. When there is a car in front, the system assists the driver to follow that vehicle while maintaining a proper following distance.

While driving using the Advance In Lane Driving with Hands-off Function, when the driver switches on the Advanced Lane Change with Hands-off Function, the system assesses the situation and assists the lane change and/or passing of the other vehicle under certain conditions. When the system detects a car in front being driven at low speed, the system notifies the driver and then assists in passing and returning to the original lane.

When the driver is unresponsive to the system’s requests for a handover (the transfer of control back to the driver), the system assists deceleration and stopping of the vehicle within the same lane. To be more specific, in case the driver does not respond to the system’s handover requests, the system escalates alarm sounds and urges the driver to respond. If the driver remains unresponsive, the system will assist deceleration and stopping of the vehicle while alerting other vehicles around using hazard lights and the horn in order to  keep the driver, occupants and other road users away from the risk of a traffic collision.

While the vehicle is parked, when the system detects a vehicle approaching from the rear, the indicator on the front pillar or side mirror lights up to assist occupants to recognize an approaching vehicle. When the system detects the risk of a collision between the vehicle door being opened to get out of the car and other vehicles passing by, an indicator flashes and an audible alarm sounds to alert the occupants.

Driver Attention Warning and Collision Warning

The system detects the driver’s condition, and when there is a risk of a collision with a pedestrian, bicycle or vehicle due to diminishing driver attention, such as daydreaming and careless driving, the system reduces the vehicle speed, alerts the driver and assists the steering to keep the vehicle inside the lane.

    In-Lane Collision Avoidance Assist Technology

When there is the risk of a collision with a pedestrian, bicycle or vehicle, and the system determines that there is enough space within the lane traveled by the vehicle to avoid a collision, the system continues reducing the vehicle speed within the lane and assists the driver's effort to avoid the collision.

    Emergency Steering Support Technology

When there is the risk of a collision with a pedestrian, bicycle or vehicle, and when the driver makes steering operation, the system continues reducing the vehicle speed and assists the steering

<The next-generation technologies of Honda SENSING Elite>

Honda will accelerate the advancement of Honda SENSING Elite, a flagship variation of Honda SENSING featuring advanced safety technologies. The application of Honda’s original AI, which “grows” while accumulating experiences much like humans, enables the system to increase its capability to recognize complex situations and handle more complex driving environments such as on non-expressways.  In this way, Honda will strive to develop technologies that will assist the driver achieve a safe and seamless ride from home to their destination with complete peace of mind on any roads including non-expressways.

To be more specific, Honda will continue making progress in the development of technologies to assist the driver on non-expressways including a hands-off function while driving through a traffic jam on arterial roads; to enable hands-off functions during merging onto and exiting from an expressway at a road junction; to assist the driver by automatically parking in and driving out of a home garage. Honda will begin applying these technologies  sequentially starting in the mid-2020s.

    Driver assistance on non-expressway roads

Honda will realize driver assistance on non-expressway roads by utilizing highly sophisticated recognition and control technologies that can handle a complex traffic environment. To be more specific, Honda will aim to introduce technologies to prevent collisions based on the risk prediction, as well as Adaptive Cruse Control (ACC) and Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) for non-expressway roads to reduce driver burden, and the hands-off function while driving in a traffic jam on arterial roads.

    Automatic parking assist

Honda Sensing Elite now offers a function to automatically park in and drive out of the garage of a single-family home or pre-assigned parking spot in a residential garage complex. In the future, Honda will strive to realize an “automated valet parking” function which will enable the customers to hail or get off their vehicle anywhere they go, in addition to their home.

Driver assistance for all expressway driving situations

In addition to existing lane keeping, lane changing and Traffic Jam Pilot functions, Honda SENSING Elite now features a driver-assistive function for merging onto and exiting an expressway.

REFRESHED JAZZ e:HEV LINE-UP GAINS NEW ADVANCE SPORT VARIANT

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/433351/refreshed-jazz-ehev-line-up-gains-new-advance-sport-variant?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_6146&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Revised e:HEV powertrain offers improved driveability and more power whilst maintaining high levels of efficiency
New Advance Sport grade introduces exclusive styling and trim options
Upgrades across the Jazz e:HEV range include an exterior styling refresh, new alloy-wheel designs and interior style enhancements

Honda is increasing the appeal of its Jazz line-up with revisions across all grades and the addition of a new Advance Sport grade; offered with exclusive styling details inside and out.

The refreshed Jazz range also features a revised e:HEV hybrid powertrain that improves driveability, adds power and a towing capacity, without impacting CO2
or fuel efficiency.

Evolved exterior and interior design

Elegance and Advance grades feature a new, more defined grille design as well as a darker headlight insert. More sculpted bumpers front and rear are complimented by textured lower sections to give the Jazz a more purposeful appearance. Revised colours for the Advance’s alloy wheel design rounds out the exterior changes for Jazz.

The Jazz Crosstar also features several exterior revisions that heighten its tougher, more adventurous appearance. The more defined grille features a pronounced honeycomb design and is paired with revised bumpers, which feature silver inserts designed to look like underbody protection, and new, matching side skirts. Rounding out the revisions are a new finish for the alloy wheels, and the introduction of a new exterior colour: Fjord Mist blue.

Inside, Elegance and Advance grades feature revisions to the colour, material and finish choices, whilst the Crosstar’s interior features new seat upholstery as well as revisions to the dash and door cards along with a new trim finish for the dashboard, centre console, and minimalist two-spoke steering wheel.

All-new Advance Sport grade

The new stand-out Advance Sport grade – available in a new exclusive paint finish, Urban Gray – incorporates a unique finish to the front bumper design, a sporty lattice grille as well as gloss black wing mirrors and unique 16” alloy wheels to broaden the appeal of the Jazz e:HEV.

Inside, the Advance Sport benefits from grade-specific enhancements that increase the premium sporty feel of the latest Jazz e:HEV. The seats are finished in a unique combination upholstery of black synthetic suede and grey synthetic leather whilst a new three spoke wheel, central armrest and door cards are detailed with a contrasting yellow stitch.

Increased e:HEV hybrid performance

The refreshed Jazz e:HEV retains Honda's responsive and highly efficient advanced hybrid technology. The latest generation e:HEV powertrain comprises two electric motors, an economical petrol engine, automatic transmission and three intelligent driving modes to deliver high levels of real-world efficiency and refinement.

Revisions to all aspects of the e:HEV system have seen efficiency, driveability and output increased. The electric drive motor has seen a 10 kW (14 PS) increase, taking its total output to 90 kW (122 PS), and the generator motor has also seen an 8 kW increase in power, taking it to a peak of 78 kW (106 PS). The 1.5-litre port-injection petrol engine has gained 7 kW to now produce a maximum of 79 kW (107 PS). Torque remains at 131 Nm.  Honda’s fuel-efficient hybrid system produces CO2 emission from 102g/km, with the Advance Sport grade from 106 g/KM.

Honda’s automatic transmission in the Jazz e:HEV has also been revised to improve smoothness and driveability to deliver a more engaging driving experience. Crosstar, Elegance and Advance grades feature a new acceleration response concept to increase the sensory feeling of acceleration. To further differentiate the Advance Sport from the rest of the range, the throttle pedal map has been revised to deliver increased driving power and improve response characteristics. In addition, the linear shift control has been revised to give the petrol engine a new, higher shift point of 6,300rpm.

To capitalize on the powertrain revisions, the Advance Sport benefits from several changes to its suspension set-up. The front spring rate has been decreased by 8% - with the rear increased by 20%. This revised front to rear stiffness balance has reduced longitudinal forces for a more focused, dynamic drive. New stiffer dampers have also been added for increased traction and cornering speed.

Introduction of towing capacity

Following customer feedback, the requirement for towing ability has been added, making the Jazz e:HEV even more versatile. All models can tow a competitive 500kg, accommodating small trailers or  bike carriers.

Clever packaging retains unrivalled space

New Jazz retains class-leading levels of interior space that have proven to be the hallmark of previous generations. Key to maximising cabin room is the positioning of the fuel tank in the centre of the chassis beneath the front seats, which is unique in this class.

This enables the Jazz to retain the exceptionally versatile rear Magic Seats that offer both “fold-flat” or “flip-up” seat flexibility, depending on cargo space required.

Honda SENSING provides comprehensive safety package

To complete the strong package of the new Jazz, Honda provides some of the most comprehensive advanced safety features and driver aids in its class.

Utilizing a wider angle, higher-definition camera enables improved awareness of vehicle surroundings, including recognition of verges without kerbs or roadside markings, whilst the active safety systems have been revised to reduce their intrusion on everyday driving.

The Traffic Jam Assist function, now upgraded to feature steering support from 0 km/h, reduces the burden on the driver when driving in traffic and heightens its already impressive crash protection.

These advanced driver assistance systems compliment the standard ten airbags, including front occupant knee and front centre airbags. The latest Jazz and Jazz Crosstar will carry the same active safety technologies and driver aids that were awarded the maximum five-star rating in 2020 Euro NCAP safety tests.

Sales of the new Honda Jazz and Jazz Crosstar for European markets are set to start early 2023.

HONDA TRIUMPHS AGAIN AT RED DOT DESIGN AWARDS

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/434636/honda-triumphs-again-at-red-dot-design-awards?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_6273&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Honda claims four Red Dot Product Design Awards across automobile and motorcycle ranges for the fourth consecutive year
All-new Honda Civic e:HEV and Civic Type R recognised by Red Dot jury for outstanding design and innovation
Wins for European designed CB750 Hornet and XL750 Transalp models mark recognition for Honda’s motorcycle business
The four Product Design Awards achieved in 2023 takes Honda’s total to thirteen in four years.

Honda has won two honours at the 2023 Red Dot Design Awards, for the all-new Civic e:HEV and for the Civic Type R. Honda also celebrated a further two Red Dot Design Awards wins, for the CB750 Hornet and XL750 Transalp motorcycles.

The Red Dot Design Awards are an internationally sought-after distinction, recognising outstanding product design that is aesthetic, functional, smart or innovative. Selected by a panel of 50 international experts that tests and evaluates each entry, the winners reflect the latest technical, social, economic and ecological requirements of consumers.

“This year, Honda celebrates its 75th anniversary, and to receive multiple Red Dot Design Awards in the Product Design category for the fourth year in a row, across our automobile and motorcycle product ranges, is fantastic and testament to our development processes. We believe in a unique human-centred approach to design and usability, and it is gratifying to see that focus reflected in the continued recognition for Honda at the Red Dot Design Awards,” said Toshinobu Minami, Chief Operating Officer, Design Center, Honda R&D Co. Ltd. “These accolades are testament to our design and R&D teams that are responsible for our products, and who place the users – our customers – at the heart of their work. Honda will continue to create designs that can bring ‘excitement’ to its future products, while carrying on with this human-centred approach.”

The all-new Civic e:HEV hatchback followed a development ethos of ‘Exhilarating Civic’,  focussing on how the exterior and interior packaging can work together to create a more comfortable and refreshing in-car experience that will enhance owners’ everyday lives. The latest model to adopt Honda’s noiseless, elegant design direction, the new Civic features a longer wheelbase, a lower, sleeker roof line, and a lower belt line that increases the glasshouse. This not only improves outward visibility, but also delivers the same sense of space and airiness experienced inside the original Civic.

Honda’s long standing ‘Man-Maximum, Machine-Minimum’ (M/M) development principle has resulted in a user focused yet modern design with particular attention paid to colours, high-quality materials, and tactile touchpoints to enhance the user experience. Clever packaging of the hybrid system within the chassis ensures that despite the sporty silhouette, interior space is not compromised.

Developed under the model concept of creating the “Ultimate Sports 2.0”, the new Civic Type R enhances the sleek and sporty silhouette of the standard model, adding wider arches, wide flow-formed 19” wheels, aggressive track-focused styling and a functional rear wing that produces genuine downforce. Internally, the new Type R pays homage to its iconic predecessors, featuring red carpet and figure-hugging sports seats, along with a new metal teardrop weighted shift and a bespoke digital dialset.

On two wheels, the CB750 Hornet motorcycle also took home a product design award. The revived nameplate sits atop a middleweight naked sport bike that takes inspiration from its ancestor, featuring a brand new 755cc parallel twin-cylinder engine, cradled by a brand-new lightweight steel-diamond frame. Honda’s design team in Rome penned the CB750 Hornet as a new, contemporary expression of technical beauty with sharp lines and aggressive angles. The main signature of the Hornet is the fuel tank, which takes inspiration from the shape of a hornet’s wing and typifies the muscularity and athleticism associated with Streetfighter style motorcycles.

In addition, the XL750 Transalp received top honours from the Red Dot jury. Marking a return of the Transalp name to Honda’s motorcycle line-up after nearly a decade, the XL750 Transalp brings the comfortable do-it-all crossover to a new generation of riders. Built around the same all-new 755cc parallel twin-cylinder engine as the Hornet, it faithfully references the iconic 1986 original XL600V Transalp but with an unmistakeably modern look, thanks to the sculpted fairing and screen that work together to reduce buffeting and increase weather protection. Sleek, simple, and clean, the iconic long-legged stance remains, projecting the adventurous intent for which the bike is renowned.

This year’s accomplishments bring the number of Red Dot Design Awards won by Honda to 13 since 2020, including a ‘Best of the Best’ accolade for the Honda e in 2020. Both it and the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP have since been inducted into the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany, one of the world's most significant exhibitions of contemporary design.

ALL-NEW HONDA CR-V: NEW POWERTRAIN OPTIONS FOR GLOBAL FAVOURITE OFFERING MORE STYLE, COMFORT, SAFETY & SPACE

https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/436063/all-new-honda-cr-v-new-powertrain-options-for-global-favourite-offering-more-style-comfort-safety-an?utm_campaign=NewsAlert_6357&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=hondanews.eu

Available with e:HEV full hybrid or, for the first time in the European market, with e:PHEV plug-in hybrid technology
Evolutionary design retains CR-V’s familiar silhouette, while refining and introducing new elements to accentuate style
Europe first introduction of omni-directional Honda SENSING 360 premium suite of advanced driver assistance systems

Honda has unveiled the sixth generation of its best-selling SUV, the CR-V, which is set to raise the bar for design, practicality, and everyday usability when it arrives in Europe later this year.

Revealed at the brand’s European Media Event in Offenbach, Germany, the latest CR-V has been refined in every way to create the perfect all-round SUV. It combines the advanced and sporty values that the Honda brand is known for, with the latest driver aids and passive safety to realise outstanding reliability, dynamics, and comfort. A focus on high-quality colours, materials and fabrics throughout the cabin has elevated the CR-V more toward the premium segment.

The CR-V will be offered with a choice of either a full hybrid (e:HEV) or, for the first time in the European market, a plug-in hybrid (e:PHEV) powertrain. Both variants feature a 2.0-litre four-cylinder direct injection Atkinson-cycle petrol engine which has been revised to enhance efficiency, refinement, and dynamic performance across the range.

e:PHEV

The e:PHEV utilises the same lightweight and high-output on-board electric motors as its e:HEV stablemate to provide impressive acceleration, quick charge times and a highly competitive all-electric only range.

Able to travel 82 km in electric mode, the plug-in CR-V can complete the majority of daily trips on electric drive alone. When the battery temperature is at 25 degrees, a 100% state of charge can be achieved from empty in just 2.5 hours.

e:HEV

The full hybrid CR-V will feature the most advanced iteration of the brand’s award-winning e:HEV powertrain, first seen in the award-winning Civic hatchback. A power-dense lithium-ion battery and two compact, lightweight electric motors combine with the petrol engine to shift seamlessly between EV, Hybrid and Engine Drive, making it ideally suited to all driving scenarios.

The all-new model retains its familiar silhouette, but with a design evolution that increases its road presence. This starts with more purposeful styling at the front, with e:HEV and e:PHEV variants each distinguished by their own exclusive grille design. Thin headlights combine with new signature daytime running lights to generate a strong visual presence, while at the rear, the vertical brake light and turn signal combination is a smart evolution of the instantly recognisable CR-V taillight design.

Visibility was another key focus during design and development. The front corner points of the CR-V are low, thanks to a wide, uncluttered bonnet, allowing drivers to understand the overall shape of the car. In combination with the large glasshouse, the CR-V offers outstanding all-round outward visibility for all occupants, reducing stress, increasing the feeling of openness and delivering a sense of safety and reassurance to all occupants.

The evolutionary design also masks an increase in every dimension for the CR-V. Wider, longer, and taller than the outgoing model the all-new CR-V offers more interior space for passengers, a 40mm longer wheelbase allows for 16mm more rear legroom, and 18% more luggage capacity. Eight levels of adjustment for the rear seat recline, with 10.5° more angle, also allows passengers to relax in comfort.

An updated suite of Honda SENSING features and new structural components contribute to class-leading active and passive safety. The all-new CR-V is the first to include Honda SENSING 360, the company’s all-new omnidirectional safety and driver assist system, which removes blind spots around the vehicle and further contributes to collision avoidance by reducing the burden on the driver.

“The all-new CR-V builds upon everything the iconic model stands for – progressive design, a premium cabin, class-leading levels of safety, practicality and comfort, and efficient and responsive performance,” says Tom Gardner, Senior Vice President at Honda Motor Europe Ltd. “This latest iteration is the ultimate SUV package, offering a unique, dynamic and premium product that perfectly suits the current demands of the European market.”

In addition, the platform incorporates a high-performance, lightweight three-in-one integrated power drive unit, electric motor and gearbox. This generates a maximum output of 150 kW,  310 Nm of torque and is engineered to provide smooth and comfortable acceleration and deceleration. Under the floor sits a high-capacity lithium-ion battery that delivers up to 412 km (WLTP) of range and DC fast-charging capability that can go from 10 to 80% in just 45 minutes.

An all-new chassis developed specifically for battery electric vehicles has ensured improved torsional rigidity – key to this is high-tensile steel, used across 47% of the e:Ny1’s body (by weight). Alongside the new platform and powertrain, these combine to offer the dynamic performance, exceptional comfort and refinement drivers will expect from Honda’s latest EV.

“The e:Ny1 is the logical next step on our electrification journey in Europe,” said Tom Gardner, Senior Vice President at Honda Motor Europe Ltd. “Our development philosophy blends intelligent, customer-centric technology with beautiful design and fun-to-drive dynamics. This latest SUV exemplifies Honda’s commitment to electrification and is the latest step on Honda’s electrification journey.”

Introduction: All-new ZR-V combines beautiful design, powerful performance and exceptional dynamics with outstanding comfort

The all-new ZR-V is Honda’s latest electrified SUV model, offering the perfect blend of strong performance, robustness, and comfort
C-segment SUV bridges the gap between the HR-V and CR-V
Stylish, powerful, yet clean design continues evolution of Honda design language

The all-new Honda ZR-V cuts a unique silhouette in the C-SUV segment through a compelling combination of sophisticated styling, a high-quality interior, and an exciting yet comfortable drive. The all-new ZR-V has been engineered to inspire confidence, encourage freedom and appeal to a wide range of European customers.

Bridging the gap between the HR-V and the new CR-V, the ZR-V is the latest Honda SUV to come with the company’s highly acclaimed e:HEV hybrid powertrain as standard. Revised for its application to this model, it continues to offer a unique blend of exceptional performance and efficiency across all road types, from the highway to country lanes. As such, the clean yet powerful 2.0-litre, four-cylinder direct injection engine works in conjunction with two motors to provide exhilarating performance usually associated with sports hatchbacks.

The elegant exterior design of the ZR-V is defined by the timeless mixture of smooth uninterrupted surfaces that flow from front to rear, with precise panel gaps and tightly defined detailing features, such as the sharply creased belt line. Initiated at the front through the slimline headlights, with clearly defined light signatures, and a large, stylised grille, the noiseless appearance continues down the clean flanks and culminates with a bold rear bumper and taillights that are neatly integrated with the tailgate.

ZR-V’s dimensions place it at the centre of Honda’s European SUV range, and provides exceptional spaciousness, practicality, and comfort within a compact package. During the design process, Honda engineers focused on delivering a stylish, elegant cabin that subtly integrates and maximises useful functionality, ensuring the cabin is both aesthetically and functionally beautiful. This allows for ease of use in everyday life thanks to a range of stowage points and useful functions such as multiple USB charging slots.

This is complemented by high-quality materials, detailed finishing, and subtle lighting to create a premium ambience. The low set dashboard and raised central console, alongside plush knee pads and arm rests, have the effect of cosseting occupants, while sophisticated HMI technology keeps driver and passengers connected to the outside world, in addition to the functionality of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The ZR-V is the latest Honda vehicle to feature the company’s advanced suite of Honda SENSING technologies as standard. Combined with a comprehensive airbag system and impressive all-round collision performance, the ZR-V achieves high levels of both active and passive safety.

“The all-new ZR-V was developed to create an SUV that is unlike others, delivering segment-leading levels of practicality, usability and comfort as well as a bold and powerful presence and beautifully detailed interior. More than that, we wanted to create an exciting SUV that delivers a highly responsive and engaging driving experience,” says Yutaka Kato, ZR-V Large Project Leader. “We believe that ZR-V offers the perfect package to meet the unique demands of customers across Europe, who demand exceptional performance and dynamics, everyday versatility, a beautiful, sleek design and a highly efficient hybrid powertrain for which Honda is renowned.”

Sporty SUV silhouette with strong styling and road presence

Sleek proportions form a sporty SUV shape with strong road presence
Seamless exterior design, from the integrated headlights and bold grille to the smooth rear aesthetic
Aerodynamic styling elements combine with noiseless surfaces to manage airflow over and around the vehicle

The bold and imposing silhouette of the all-new Honda ZR-V will appeal to customers who want a sporty and sophisticated looking SUV, with noiseless surfaces that create a sleek appearance and a bold front face that ensures a strong road presence. Functionality in design was a key focus for Honda engineers, so each panel and component are optimised to aid visibility from within and enhance aerodynamic performance.

This clean silhouette is enhanced by the use of laser brazing on the roof panel, which reduces join lines for a seamless finish over larger body areas. The quest for uninterrupted lines extends to the smart door handle design, which has removed the need for parting lines between the handle and lock.

The front of the SUV is dominated by a stylised, gloss black grille design that is made up of strong vertical bars on both Elegance and Advance grades, whilst Sport models receive a unique honeycomb shape finish. The slimline headlights are accentuated by the chiselled front bumper to give a defined, sculpted look, with feature lines that extend off the bonnet and beneath the light cluster to frame the unit, adding tone and depth.

Beneath the lights, the front bumper features a discrete vertical slot ahead of the front wheel, which serves as part of the aerodynamic air curtain that reduces overall vehicle drag. Sport grades gain a revised bumper design with further gloss black cladding around the air curtain inlet area, emphasising the aperture and the sporting undertones of the ZR-V.

Helping establish the confident exterior of the ZR-V is the stylised lower body cladding that wraps around the lowest parts of the car, taking in front and rear bumpers, side skirts and wheel arches. Elegance grades feature a textured finish to these components, whilst Sport and Advance grades are finished in gloss black.

The double arc wheel arches emphasise the strong grounding of the car, giving the ZR-V an assured, purposeful stance. This is continued down the sides, with a negative volume and pronounced swage line between the wheels, accentuating the width of the arches. The flanks are free from superfluous details and creases, leading to a refined, classy appearance and typified through the tightly defined beltline that flows the length of the car. By ensuring the majority of the vehicle’s mass sits below this, alongside an expansive glasshouse above, the ZR-V exudes a confident, sure-footed appearance.

This subtly defined approach continues to the rear of the ZR-V, with a detail line running across the car to add definition and width, which is further compounded by the slimline, horizontal rear light clusters. Their internal signature is arranged in a unique way to give the ZR-V a strong, easily identifiable appearance, even at night.

Sport and Advance grades also benefit from dual exit exhaust, finished with highly polished chrome surrounds and a gun metal finished central under cladding element to add further depth and definition to the rear of the vehicle.

Aerodynamic styling elements are integrated throughout the ZR-V and combine with the smooth, noiseless surfaces for complete airflow management around the vehicle. The tailgate spoiler works in combination with the rear light cluster design to help optimise airflow down the entire car, while the spoiler’s blowdown angle has been optimised, as has the rearward flow detachment on the rear three-quarter panel. When paired with the air curtain and optimised underfloor sections, the ZR-V has minimised the size of the flow loss area to deliver class-leading aerodynamic performance*.

At 1,620mm tall unladen, 1,840mm wide and 4,568mm long, with a 2,657mm wheelbase, the ZR-V slots neatly into the current Honda SUV line up. Being 50mm wider than the HR-V and 59mm lower than the CR-V, the vehicle is compact yet spacious, offering a compelling balance of capability, spaciousness, and versatility.

Customers can choose from five exterior colours at launch, including Diamond Dust Pearl, Ruse Black Metallic, Radiant Red Metallic, Platinum White Pearl, and Still Night Blue Pearl.

The ZR-V range has 18-inch alloy wheels as standard, finished in Pewter Gray for Elegance and a Matt Berlina Black for Sport grades, while Advance grades offer a diamond cut and Berlina Black finish for a more premium appearance.

Sophisticated interior offers premium comfort and usability

Premium interior experience for the driver and passengers, prioritising high levels of comfort and usability
Driver-focused cabin with tactile touch points and easy-to-use functionality
Cabin layout prioritises usability, with clever storage and smart functionality for all occupants

The all-new Honda ZR-V offers a premium experience for driver and passengers through a sophisticated interior design that blends high quality materials and tactile touch points, with practicality, functionality, and class-leading levels of comfort.

Honda’s designers prioritised the use of high-quality materials throughout the cabin, with soft-touch materials and tactile touch points. A large nine-inch touchscreen sits in the centre of the wide upper dash panel, which stretches across the front of the cabin to enhance the sense of lateral space. The wraparound dashboard and large centre console, alongside plush knee pads and arm rests, all combine to envelope occupants in premium comfort.

Repeated digital modelling during the design and development of the interior has resulted in a unique ridged aesthetic to all door linings and trunk interior panels. This unified finish ensures a lasting premium finish by visually minimizing the impact that scuffs and scratches have on trim in areas prone to damage from ingress and egress.

The split layer centre console is unique to ZR-V and has been designed to neatly incorporate the gear shifter and parking brake button, which are optimally positioned for ease of use. The shift-by-wire gear selector has been redesigned with a unique shape and movement for each button, to make it intuitive for the driver to use without having to take their eyes off the road.

A three-spoke steering wheel with a smooth leather finish and gloss black accents creates a premium feel for the driver. Added convenience is provided by buttons for audio, phone and setting controls on the left steering wheel spoke, and the cruise control interface and vehicle information selector on the right. Advanced grades gain a heated steering wheel, controlled by a button discreetly positioned on the wheel’s lower, central spoke. Genuine metal paddles are fitted to all grades and offer full control over the e:HEV’s regenerative braking force.

For front seat passengers, Honda’s body-stabilising seat structure offers additional lumbar and pelvis support to occupants for greater comfort. The seats incorporate a thick suspension mat with a wire and resin moulded structure, which is ergonomically designed to help reduce driver and passenger fatigue on long journeys. In the rear, the seats have been optimised to provide a relaxing seating posture for passengers, like that of a hatchback.

Depending on grade, the seats are trimmed in either fabric, half-, or full-leather options with high-quality detailing and quilting. Elegance grade models receive smart black Mélange fabric seat trim, with a complex embossed pattern, complemented by detailing across the dashboard.

Sport grade introduces a stylish synthetic leather and combi-tufted fabric mix – detailed with embroidered accents and vibrant silver detailing to the bolsters. The colourway introduces a more playful tone to the interior, and is complimented by a high-intensity sheen finish to the centre console and door cards.

Advance grade models introduce a more premium interior, with a seamless mix of synthetic and genuine perforated leather that features quilted details, all interspersed with a contrasting silver accent. Genuine leather lines the seat back and base for increased comfort, whilst a harder wearing synthetic adorns the bolsters to ensure a long lasting, premium finish.

Honda engineers focused on optimising the packaging and ergonomics to ensure exceptional all-round outward visibility and offer an engaging, rewarding driving experience. A high eye point provides the driver with a wide, unobstructed view from the windscreen and side windows. The field of view has been maximised by positioning the A-pillars as rearward as possible, mounting the smart wiper arms with integrated washer jets beneath the bonnet line, and the uninterrupted panel lines across the bonnet all aiding forward visibility. The door mirrors are also mounted on the door skin, away from the A-pillar, to reduce blind spots and ensure a clear line of sight down the length of the car is reflected in the mirrors for greater confidence when reversing or changing lanes.

Despite the high eye point, the ZR-V also offers drivers a hatchback-like driving experience and sense of being directly connected to the car through an inspiring driving position. This has been achieved by ensuring a low offset between the vehicle’s heel and hip points, akin to the Civic e:HEV hatchback, to give a supported and comfortable posture, with a reassuring seating position.

Practicality

The ZR-V features a vast array of storage trays and pockets designed to make life easier for occupants. In the front, this includes two cup holders, a centre tray, which  gains wireless mobile phone charging for Sport grades onwards, while the tall centre console incorporates storage areas for the driver and front passenger beneath the gear selector. The integrated tray beneath the console has room to store mobile phones, while the centre console box has enough space to easily stow a tablet.

Supporting busy lifestyles, the versatile rear cargo space features fold-flat seats, a load partition, retractable parcel cover and under floor storage. The ZR-V offers from 370 litres of cargo space at full passenger, 20% more than HR-V, and an additional 921 litres (1291L in total) by folding the rear seats down, while the low, wide boot aperture and flat cargo floor helps users when loading heavy items.

An automatic power tailgate is standard on the Sport grade and above, improving the ease of loading and unloading with both hands full. The system reacts to a kicking movement under the vehicle’s rear bumper to the open the boot, while a walk-away function automatically closes, and locks it.

Innovative technology features in easy-to-use infotainment suite

User-focused HMI and simple-to-use technology keeps users connected to the car and the outside world
High-quality digital displays and intuitive touchscreen controls deliver a premium experience with natural interactions
Advance grade features a premium specification, including a heads-up display, Bose Premium Audio, 10.2” digital dial set and screen mirroring

The all-new ZR-V is equipped with a range of innovative technologies, designed to keep users connected to the car and the outside world. Simple controls and easy-to-read displays are optimised to enable natural and intuitive use.

Behind the steering wheel on Elegance and Sport grades sits a high-quality seven-inch TFT digital instrument binnacle, which works with an analogue speedometer to present key information in a sophisticated yet easy-to-read format for the driver. Infotainment status is presented on the left and vehicle and driving assistance information in the centre. Integrated into the binnacle is a new, simple to read power meter design, which is now linked to the engine to give a more engaging and immersive display of speed as the car accelerates.

Advance grade models gain a fully digitised 10.2-inch TFT readout that has been designed specifically to relay a multitude of vehicle data and real-world information as clearly and concisely as possible to occupants. Honda’s conscious approach for minimizing distractions and ensuring the driver is in full control is reflected in the control functions of the steering wheel – the jogger dial on the left side of the steering wheel controls the infotainment status display, allowing users to select audio, phone, or setting functionalities, while the right-side jogger dial controls the vehicle and driving assistance functions.

A nine-inch touchscreen located atop the dashboard provides an instantaneous, clear display of information for the driver and front passenger, with key information such as the audio output, time and vehicle status. There is also a shortcut area that registers up to six apps to avoid excessive menu navigation, while physical buttons and dials are retained for home, back and volume for ease of use and increased safety while driving. Everyday applications can be accessed via the ZR-V’s touchscreen as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring.

Advance grades gain an all-new five-inch heads-up display (HUD) that is projected on to the inside of the windscreen and presents drivers with priority information such as speed, navigation, Honda SENSING features and incoming calls – all while maintaining their line of vision.

To ensure uninterrupted connectivity for all occupants, the ZR-V features five individual ports for charging mobile devices throughout the cabin. At the front, there is a 15-watt wireless charging pad for smartphones, in addition to illuminated fast-charging USB-A and USB-C ports beneath the gear selector in the centre console. For rear passengers, two illuminated fast-charging USB-C ports are located by the air vents in the rear of the centre console.

For Elegance and Sport grades, an eight-speaker audio system is included as standard. The Advanced model benefits from an upgraded premium 12-speaker audio system – complete with a high-capacity sub-woofer – that was developed jointly with BOSE to fill the cabin with a realistic concert hall sound experience.
