Honda strengthens global brand value

Honda has seen a strengthening in the value of its brand for the third year in a row. International consultancy Interbrand have recently published the 2015 edition of its Best Global Brands ranking, placing Honda as the 19th most valuable global brand.

Honda’s brand was valued in excess of $22 billion, an increase of six per cent compared to 2014. This valuation improved Honda’s position in the all industry ranking by one place.

This result is the latest positive news for the brand following a year of extensive product introductions, particularly in the European region. In the last 12 months Honda has renewed its entire car range with all-new versions of its Jazz hatchback, HR-V compact crossover, and heavily refreshed versions of the Civic hatchback and CR-V four-wheel drive compact SUV. Meanwhile Honda’s motorcycle range has seen no fewer than seven new product introductions, including the Moto GP inspired RC213V-S superbike. Other product introductions across the corporation include a revised version of the unique robotic mower, Miimo, and the first flights of the HondaJet aircraft.

2016 is set to be another positive year for the Honda brand as it launches its next generation FCV hydrogen fuel cell vehicle and an icon returns to showrooms in the shape of the NSX supercar.

British Touring Car Team Honda Yuasa Racing secures first motorsport title for new Civic Type R

The new Honda Civic Type R has this weekend added motorsport honours to its growing list of plaudits, as Honda Yuasa Racing clinched the drivers and manufacturers championship in the 2015 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship in a tense final round at Brands Hatch.

Continuing the success story for the most high performance car ever to wear the red ‘H’ badge, the new Honda Civic Type R was developed with help from the brand’s World Touring Car Team. Vital analysis and feedback from the track informed decisions about performance and styling, supporting the British team to driver and manufacturer titles in its first competitive year.

The road-going version of the Civic Type R broke cover at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show back in March and with the Dunlop MSA British Touring Cars season kicking off just a few short weeks after, the Honda Yuasa Racing team required special assistance from Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) to ensure the car was ready to race.

Billed as a race car for the road, the aggressive hot hatch set the fastest time for a front wheel drive car around the legendary Nurburgring and has a total output of 310ps, a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 170 mph.

Gordon Shedden commented: “You’re only as good as the car you’re sat in, and the Honda Yuasa Racing guys have given me an amazing bit of kit all season. The Honda Civic Type R only came out this year, and we’ve won both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships.

“At the start of the season, because of the newness of the car, we had severely limited parts so we had to make sure we didn’t get involved in any serious altercations, as we wouldn’t have been able to race!”

Honda HR-V makes the final five of AUTOBEST 2016

Honda HR-V crossover voted as a finalist in AUTOBEST “Best Buy Car of Europe in 2016” award
First time that a Honda vehicle has made the final
AUTOBEST jurors represent 26 European countries
Early sales performance of HR-V strong, with over 6,000 confirmed customer orders

European auto jury AUTOBEST has voted Honda’s HR-V crossover as a finalist in the “Best Buy Car of Europe in 2016” award. HR-V will now progress to the final testing session at Navak proving ground in Belgrade, Serbia, to compete against four other finalists. This is the first time the Japanese brand has secured a place as a finalist.

The AUTOBEST organisation is composed of 26 of the most influential motoring writers from across Europe. The award seeks to recognise the new car that represents the best overall offer for a broad range of European customers. Areas of particular importance to the jury include competitive pricing, flexibility, design, connectivity and the availability of spare parts and service items. To be eligible, vehicles must be available from less than €20,000.

The nomination is the latest news in a successful launch year for Honda’s new crossover. Earlier in 2015, HR-V was voted most anticipated car of the year by readers of the UK’s What Car? magazine. After just six weeks on sale across Europe, Honda has received over 6,000 confirmed customer orders after six weeks on sale.

AUTOBEST Founder and Chairman, Dan Vardie, said, “The new HR-V impressed jurors with its interior versatility, new design and technology features. The jury look forward to putting the car through its paces in Belgrade in November.”

All-New VTEC TURBO engines set for next generation 2017 Civic

Two further VTEC TURBO engines to be launched in Europe
First application of new engines scheduled for 10th generation 2017 Civic

Honda has announced that two all new downsized turbo petrol engines will be coming to Europe. 1-litre and 1.5-litre VTEC TURBO engines will form part of the powertrain line-up for the 10th generation Civic, set for launch in Europe from early 2017. The all-new engines will be part of Honda’s growing Earth Dreams Technology range and will deliver a combination of dynamic performance, class-leading output and excellent fuel economy. The first new VTEC TURBO engine, a 2-litre, was launched this year in the current Civic Type R, capable of 310ps and a 0-62 mph time of 5.7 seconds.

Based on a completely new engine structure and utilising its newly developed turbo systems, the new engines feature variable valve motion technology to reduce friction and achieve class-leading output and environmental performance. The new engines use a turbocharger with a low moment of inertia and high responsiveness, and direct injection technology to achieve good balance between high output and torque, above those of conventional naturally-aspirated engines.

The all new Civic is scheduled to arrive in Europe in early 2017 after being announced at Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Five door variants will be exclusively produced at Honda’s UK manufacturing plant (HUM) in Swindon. Honda has confirmed investment of €270m in new production technologies and processes to prepare for the new model.

HONDA UNVEILS CLARITY FUEL CELL AT THE 2015 TOKYO MOTOR SHOW

Next generation Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Vehicle unveiled at 2015 Tokyo Motor Show
Best-in-class range comparable to fossil fuel-powered vehicles
Clarity Fuel Cell set for 2016 introduction in selected European markets

Honda, the pioneer of hydrogen fuel cell technology has unveiled its next generation Clarity Fuel Cell today at the 44th Tokyo Motor Show.

Incorporating Honda’s most advanced technologies, the Clarity Fuel Cell is the world’s first production model of a fuel cell powered sedan to house the entire fuel cell stack and drivetrain system in the space normally occupied by the engine and transmission. The Clarity Fuel Cell will be commercially available in Japan from early 2016. Further information on the European launch of the vehicle will follow in 2016.

World-first packaging solution

The packaging of the Clarity Fuel Cell has been inspired by Honda’s principle of man maximum, machine minimum. Through minimising the space utilised by the powertrain, Honda has been able to achieve a level of interior space that allows five adults to be comfortably accommodated as would be expected in a conventionally powered sedan. The size of the fuel cell stack and the power generation unit have been reduced through Honda’s advanced technologies to a size comparable to a V6 engine.

Despite the compact nature of the fuel cell powertrain, Honda’s advanced technologies have ensured world-leading fuel cell stack performance. Honda’s original wave flow channel separators are more advanced than ever, while the cells now feature a higher output and a more slender shape thanks to a 1 mm (20%) reduction in the thickness of each cell. These advances combine to make the fuel cell stack 33% more compact than the stack used in the original FCX Clarity. This improvement is highly impressive as it has been achieved in parallel with an increase in maximum motor output to 130 kW (177ps) and a power density increased by 60% to 3.1 kW/L.

Class-leading convenience

The Clarity Fuel Cell is equipped with a high-pressure tank capable of storing hydrogen gas at 70 MPa, increasing the mass of hydrogen that can be stored and extending the range of the vehicle. Coupled with the efficient powertrain and reduced vehicle energy consumption, the Clarity Fuel Cell achieves a best-in-class fuel cell vehicle range per full tank of over 700 km1  (435miles).

In addition, the high-pressure tank can be quickly refilled, the process taking approximately

three minutes at 70 MPa and 20oC. These and other benefits give the Clarity Fuel Cell a day-to-day convenience customers are used to with their traditional petrol or diesel powered vehicles.

An exhilarating driving experience

Engineered to use the high output of Honda’s fuel cell stack and the power assist of the lithium-ion battery pack, a high-output motor provides power to the driven wheels together with instant and powerful acceleration. Due to the continuously increasing torque provided by the high-output 130 kW (177 PS) motor with no need for gears, the Clarity Fuel Cell achieves perfectly smooth acceleration anywhere from zero to maximum speed.

The direct response, exhilarating drive and quiet cabin together form an appealing combination. Clarity Fuel Cell offers the driver two driving modes: the ‘Normal’ mode provides a balance between fuel economy and driving performance, while ‘Sport’ prioritises a more responsive acceleration feeling.

Outstanding design

The exterior of Clarity Fuel Cell has been designed to give an imposing presence on the road while maintaining a strong aerodynamic profile. . Full-LED headlights with a sharp, slender profile and 18-inch aluminium wheels with an aerodynamic and stylish design complete the look.

The interior of Clarity Fuel Cell combines an advanced yet refined atmosphere designed to provide the driver with a relaxing and comfortable driving environment. The advanced driver interface uses Honda’s design principles of instant recognition and intuitive control. Simple and outstandingly spacious, the interior features premium, comforting materials that make driving an experience to anticipate and enjoy.

Honda Clarity in Europe and participation in HyFIVE project

Honda is scheduled to launch the Clarity Fuel Cell in a limited number of European markets in 2016. Honda is one of five automotive companies that make up the HyFIVE consortium, and will supply vehicles that will be part of a 110 strong European fleet to highlight and promote the development, use and viability of this new technology.

In UK, Honda has worked with suppliers to encourage the local production and consumption of energy by establishing a solar-powered hydrogen refuelling station in the grounds of Honda of the UK Manufacturing in Swindon. This station is open to the public (subject to registration) and able to refuel any fuel cell vehicle.

Honda's fifth consecutive spot in Top 100 Global Innovators list

Honda has been named in Thomson Reuters’ prestigious Top 100 Global Innovators report for the fifth year in a row. The annual report, which was published last week, identifies companies that develop new inventions and successfully patent them.

Describing itself as a list of the top 100 worldwide innovation power players the report has recognised Honda’s innovation every year since its inception in 2011.

Honda’s 70 years of innovation

Honda has a rich history of innovation that stretches back to the birth of the company:

1949 – Honda launches its first motorcycle, the Dream D-Type motorcycle. It is the first production motorcycle to feature a semi-automatic transmission.

1971 – Honda responds to the imposition of stringent US air quality targets by creating the CVCC, the first engine that met these targets without the need for a catalytic converter.

1983-1992 – Honda re-enters Formula 1 racing, winning six consecutive constructors championships and five drivers’ championships for Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna.

1999 – Honda launched the first production full hybrid car in Europe, the Honda Insight.

2008 – Following years of development, Honda was the first manufacturer to launch a dedicated platform hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the FCX Clarity.

2015 – A world first in the automobile industry, as Honda launches i-ACC (intelligent adaptive cruise control) which predicts a car is ‘cutting-in’ to your lane on the motorway.

Commenting on the achievement, Philip Ross, Senior Vice President said, “The business has been built on a strong belief in innovation instilled by our founder Soichiro Honda almost 70 years ago.”

"That innate desire to contribute to society through engineering and technology perspective continues throughout Honda today. Our continuing work to innovate across many areas – from robotics to aviation, road safety to motor racing – means Honda will continue to be seen as a global innovator for many years to come.”

A Thomson Reuters spokesman said: “Our philosophy is that a great idea without patent protection and commercialisation is nothing more than a great idea”.

Ends

Editor’s note:

The Top 100 Global Innovators list is the only study of its kind to track innovation on a quantitative basis using detailed patent data. More information can be found here.

The methodology for determining the winners is based on an analysis of overall patent volume, patent grant success rate, global reach and invention influence.

A resurgent 2015 for Honda lays the foundation for future growth

New product introductions give Honda one of the freshest mainstream product ranges in the industry
Range already winning awards across Europe
First step on return to 200,000 annual unit sales
Honda strengthens European production activity with €270m investment in Honda of the UK Manufacturing facility (HUM)
10th Generation Civic to be built in Europe and exported globally

The return of well-loved models from the past and revitalised mainstream products has made 2015 a year of resurgence for Honda in Europe. An all-new Jazz and refreshed versions of Civic and CR-V have been supported by the return of the HR-V and Civic Type R to European showrooms.

The year kicked off with the launch of the revised CR-V, equipped with a new more powerful version of Honda’s 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine. This unit can be specified with a nine-speed automatic transmission, the first application of this gearbox in Honda’s European range. Inside, the car benefitted from the new Honda Connect infotainment system, providing drivers with next-generation infotainment features and support for the latest smartphones.

The launch of the CR-V was quickly followed by another SUV, the all-new HR-V. This release marked the return of Honda to a segment it helped define with the original HR-V, providing sporty looks and handling while retaining clever packaging and efficient powertrains. The HR-V has been selling strongly since launch, and was recently nominated in the shortlist for the 2016 AUTOBEST award.

A well-loved name returned to the Honda range this summer, as the all-new Civic Type R was unleashed on European roads. Built exclusively at Honda’s HUM manufacturing facility in Swindon, UK, the car is being exported for sale in the Japanese market. With the majority of the first year’s allocation sold at launch, the Type R has gained widespread critical acclaim, including the Hot Hatch of the year award at the Scottish Car of the Year, and Sporty Car of the Year from French magazine Echappement. The Type R topped the year by claiming its first motorsport titles, taking the drivers and constructors crown in the British Touring Car Championship.

The product introductions were rounded off by the launch of the all-new Jazz. Building on the strengths of one of Honda’s best-loved cars, the new Jazz featured an all-new 1.3-litre VTEC engine, an aggressively restyled exterior design and a full range of Honda SENSING active safety features. Jazz successfully received a five star result in EURO NCAP testing, becoming only the second manufacturer to secure this result under new stricter testing conditions.

Looking to 2016, the resurgence continues as Honda prepares for the launch of a further two all-new cars to Europe, the all-new NSX and Clarity Fuel Cell. Meanwhile, HUM will be developing its capabilities ready to assume responsibility for global production of the 10th generation Civic five-door model from 2017 onwards.

Commenting on the unprecedented year for Honda, Senior Vice President, Phillip Ross said “2015 was only the sign of things to come from Honda and 2016 is shaping up to be another exciting and busy year. The resurgence of our brand in Europe is only set to continue.”

Tokyo Auto Salon open to the public from 15-17 January

Amongst the concepts and special editions at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2016, tuners have turned their attention to the new Civic Type R to give their unique twist on the race car for the road.

The event is the world’s largest customised automobile show, with thousands attending to see radical versions of some of the best-selling cars in Japan and globally.

Mugen Civic Type R concept

Famous for making many adaptations of best-selling Honda models, tuning house Mugen has taken the new Civic Type R (recently launched for sale in Japan) and added even more aggressive body styling to the package.

The concept adds a revised front bumper with contrasting black parts around the lip and wheel arches. The black theme is continued through the rest of the car, with side and rear skirts giving an aggressive on road stance. The standard rear spoiler is replaced by a lighter, race car inspired design, again finished in black.

Modulo Civic Type R

Modulo have taken the standard Type R design, and added a revised body kit, with flared side skirts. The standard fuel filler cap has been replaced with one of a different design, while red body colour accents are used on the wing mirror covers and the sides of the rear spoiler.

Honda Racing at Tokyo Auto Salon

Honda Racing will exhibit a range of its challengers from 2015, including the McLaren-Honda MP4-30, the Super GT GT500 NSX CONCEPT-GT and Honda’s entry in the Japanese Super Formula series.

Honda’s motorsport stars from two and four wheels give media guests a taste of performance in the latest Civic Type R
Marc Marquez, Dani Pedrosa, Toni Bou and Tiago Monteiro get the keys to their brand-new Civic Type R road cars

Honda’s worlds of two and four wheels were brought together in Spain recently as the stars of the Honda MotoGP, World Trials and World Touring Car teams demonstrated the capabilities of the latest roadgoing Civic Type R.

Selected members of the Spanish media joined Repsol Honda MotoGP riders Marc Marquez, Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda trials legend Toni Bou and Castrol Honda WTCC driver Tiago Monteiro, who have claimed 25 world titles between them, at the Castelloli circuit near Barcelona.

The guests were given ‘hot lap’ experiences by the quartet, enabling them to feel the power of the Type R’s 2-litre VTEC TURBO engine and the outstanding handling afforded by racing car-bred aerodynamics and adaptive suspension that ensures optimal traction and stability.

Not only that, but they were then given the chance to sample all this – and the car’s ‘+R’ button, which provides a pure track-driving experience – for themselves with a series of high-performance skills tests at the circuit’s racing school.

The event once again showed off how lessons learnt on the race tracks of the world have been used to create superb road experiences on both two and four wheels, as was previously shown in Italy last year when Honda’s WTCC and BTCC squads teamed up with the LCR Honda MotoGP team for a very special VIP and media event.

At the end of the day, Marquez, Pedrosa, Bou and Monteiro were given the keys to their own Civic Type Rs, which they will have at their disposal throughout 2016.

A video edit from the Civic Type R experience is available for embed via the Honda Racing WTCC YouTube Channel.

Marc Marquez, Repsol Honda MotoGP

"It's amazing that a car designed for road use can provide a sporty driving experience like the Type R does. It’s not only the power of the engine, but also the possibility to press the "R+" button, which provides added engine response, with a harder steering action for a more consistent feel and a more intense driving experience.”

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda MotoGP

“I’ve been waiting to have a chance to try the Civic Type R on the track and to really push it to 100 per cent, because you really can feel every last detail of the car. Even driving it on the road is a very special experience.”

Tiago Monteiro, Castrol Honda WTCC

“The experience you get from the Type R is amazing. As a racing driver, I know what we mean when we talk about the thrill of driving on track. It’s fascinating that a road model can provide such similar sensations as the race machine.”

Toni Bou, Repsol Honda Trials

“It’s amazing! I owned the old Type R and I can see and feel a lot of improvements with the new model. It has very, very good corner speed as well as incredible stability under braking. There’s also excellent power from the engine.”

Honda Named Most Reliable Manufacturer in Survey of Over 30,000 European Drivers

Honda rated as the most reliable car manufacturer by Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) survey
Honda Jazz least likely to spend time in the garage, while Civic, CR-V and Insight also rated highly
Over 30,000 European Drivers surveyed on 178 different models
Survey focused on reliability and experiences of European motorists

A survey carried out by Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU), of over 30,000 European drivers focusing on the reliability of over 178 different models has found that customers rate Honda as the most reliable car brand.

Overall, Honda ranked top of the survey, receiving a reliability rating of 93/100 and with further 79% of survey respondents saying that they would recommend a Honda vehicle. The Honda Jazz was rated as the top car in terms of reliability in the “utility” vehicles category. Other Honda models were also highly rated with the Civic, CR-V and Insight placing in the top 10 of most reliable cars in their respective categories.

Price, fuel consumption, practicality and reliability are key considerations for consumers when buying a car. The OCU survey focused on reliability to find out if owners had experienced breakdowns in the past year and to find out the type of problems drivers had experienced. From this data they established a reliability index which can be used to compare the likelihood of a breakdown between different makes and models on the market.

“Reliability and quality are synonymous with the Honda brand,” says Honda Motor Europe’s senior vice president, Philip Ross. “The results of the survey highlight the importance of the quality commitments Honda has made to its customers. It is important for Honda to ensure that customers can experience the joy of owning a Honda vehicle and enjoy driving them with the peace of mind that the cars are among the least likely to experience breakdowns.”

More information about the survey can be found at: https://www.ocu.org/organizacion/prensa/press-releases/2014/fiabilidad-auto

- First production model of all-new Acura NSX fetches almost ten times its book price at auction

- NASCAR team owner bids $1.2million to own the coveted VIN #001

- All proceeds of sale to go to children’s charities

The first production model of the all-new Acura NSX was sold at auction in the US last week, fetching almost ten times its book price at a cool $1.2million (£842,500).

The car featuring the coveted #001 VIN number was bought by Rick Hendrick, owner of the Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR team, with every dollar raised donated to children’s charities the Paediatric Brain Tumour Foundation (North Carolina) and Camp Southern Ground (Georgia).

Bidding for the car topped the $1million dollar mark at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2016 auction on the evening of Friday 29th January, making it the highest charity sale of a VIN #001 manufacturer car in the auctioneer’s 45-year history. A renowned collector of first-edition performance cars, Rick Hendrick will add the very special NSX to his museum collection in Charlotte, North Carolina.

With a US retail price starting at $157,800 (£111,000) including delivery, the all-new NSX is Acura’s first built-to-order car, with order books in the US opening on 25th February 2016 in authorised NSX dealerships. An online configurator will also launch that day allowing prospective customers to explore the 573-horsepower, twin-turbo hybrid supercar for themselves.

Specifically designed to bring a “new sports experience” to the supercar segment, the NSX challenges conventional beliefs about supercars, much as the first generation did a quarter of a century ago. This philosophy is realised through an all-new three motor electric hybrid system, a twin -turbo V6 engine 9-speed DCT transmission and multi material body architecture with a range of cutting edge manufacturing practices.

Developed under the concept of a “human-centred supercar,” a car that puts the driver first in every aspect of its design, the next-generation NSX leverages its state-of-the-art hybrid supercar power unit, body and chassis to deliver exceptionally intuitive and immediate response to driver inputs.

The all-new NSX will be sold under the Honda brand when it goes on sale in Europe later this year.

First time that a Honda vehicle has made the final five
73 World Car of the Year jurors represent 23 countries and regions

The World Car of the Year jury has voted Honda’s Civic Type R as a finalist in the “World Performance Car of the Year” award. The Japanese brand is making its debut as a finalist, with the winner set to be announced at the New York motor show on March 24.

The nomination is the latest good news in a successful year for Honda’s European produced ‘race car for the road’. As the car hit showrooms during September, it secured its first motorsport titles taking the drivers and constructors championship in the British Touring Car Championship. Towards the end of the year, French publications Echappement and L’Automobile Sportive declared Civic Type R sports car of the year, with the latter being decided by readers themselves.

The World Car of the Year jury is composed of 73 motoring writers from across 23 countries and regions globally. For cars to be considered, they must be sold in at least five countries globally, on at least two continents. The first award was announced in 2004, with the performance car category added in 2006.

Honda has tasted success previously in the World Car of the Year awards, taking the “World Green Car of the Year” crown in 2006 (Civic Hybrid) and 2009 (FCX Clarity).
