Honda has extended its outstanding winning streak with success in the 2021 World Car Awards. The Honda e added the World Urban Car of the Year title to its growing list of recent prestigious accolades, as well as being shortlisted in the top three of the overall World Car of the Year award. The Honda Jazz e:HEV also featured in the top three for the World Urban Car prize, as the Japanese brand dominated the category.

 

Both the compact city cars are playing an important role in Honda's commitment to electrify 100% of its mainstream European automobile range by 2022.

 

The Honda e, which is the brand’s first fully electric vehicle (EV) for Europe, was awarded the 2021 World Urban Car of the Year accolade by a panel of 93 international journalists from 28 countries. The World Car Awards programme recognises excellence in Urban, Luxury, Performance and Design categories, with the Honda e recognised for its responsive and fun driving experience, exceptional in-car technology and connectivity, and stand-out contemporary design.

 

Winning accolades around the world, the Honda e continues to set global benchmarks for contemporary car design and advanced e-mobility. Other successes for the popular compact EV include two 'Red Dot' awards for outstanding design, including 'Best of the Best 2020', and induction into the world-renowned Red Dot museum in Germany.

 

The car, which made its debut as the Honda e Prototype at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019, also recently received the 'ECOBEST' title from the AUTOBEST jury and was named overall winner at the German Car of the Year 2021 awards with additional wins in the 'New Energy' category. Earlier this year it was also crowned 'Best EV' in the Women's World Car of the Year 2021 awards.

The judging panel praised the Jazz for its efficient and responsive hybrid powertrain, clever packaging and impressive interior space and exceptional levels of comfort.

 

The Jazz and Jazz Crosstar were recently recognised for achieving an outstanding balance of functionality, design and safety by the prestigious Red Dot Awards 2021, receiving the highly coveted 'Product Design' award. This internationally renowned accolade is only bestowed upon the highest quality products that excel in product, brand and communication design categories.

The all-new HR-V e:HEV is powered by Honda's advanced two-motor hybrid powertrain technology, delivering a blend of efficiency and responsive performance. The sub-compact SUV joins Honda's e:HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) model line-up for the first time and represents one of the final steps in the brand's commitment to electrifying all its European mainstream models by 2022.

 

When reimagining the HR-V, Honda set out to create a car with a desirable blend of stand-out design, exceptional efficiency and ultimate usability. Conceived to meet the exacting needs of modern consumers, the new model achieves a rare balance of premium SUV styling and exceptional spaciousness, with compact dimensions and easy entry and exit for passengers. All this is enabled by Honda's 'Man-Maximum, Machine-Minimum' (M/M) principle, which centres on the belief that the purpose of technology and design is to serve the needs of the driver and passengers.

 

Coupe-inspired exterior with premium SUV styling

With its forward-oriented character lines and smooth surfaces the next-generation HR-V e:HEV embodies the brand's simple, clean, modern design philosophy already seen in recent new Honda models.

 

Defined by the same key design concepts of function and beauty, the compact coupe-inspired shape is familiar yet exciting in appearance, with a playful character and confident SUV stance. Its sleek silhouette is achieved by increasing road clearance by 10 mm and reducing the roof height by 20 mm compared to the previous model. Increasing the size of the wheels to 18 inches, which come as standard on the all-new HR-V, and reducing the front overhang further reinforce the robust SUV appeal, and provides the aesthetic solidity that modern customers desire.

 

The clean simplicity of design is realised through the car's smooth surfaces, with exterior design features incorporated into the body shape. For example, the headlights, unique body-coloured grille and distinctive lower mesh grille seamlessly integrate with the forward-protruding nose shape and front quarter panels, giving it a more sculpted appearance and creating a sleek, bold expression.

 

The body sides present a contemporary, noiseless aesthetic, with a crisp horizontal shoulder line running from the rear as far as the front headlights, generating a sense of forward momentum. The protruding front section and pulled back A-pillar combine to create a premium long bonnet, visually moving the cabin volume rearwards and further accentuating the sleek coupe-like proportions. The combination of utility and aesthetics is evident in the simple, elegant tailgate design, which neatly integrates the tailgate door handle within the three-dimensional rear panel.

 

Aerodynamic improvements are achieved without the need for unnecessary design features that often compromise styling. An air curtain slit at the front bumper, rear side sill lip and sleek rear light shape all help to reduce turbulence, aided by the rear side spoiler that reduces air turbulence behind the vehicle. The resulting effect is higher stability and better high-speed fuel efficiency, without spoiling the sleek design.

 

Interior design and class-leading spaciousness

Inside the new HR-V, every design element is dedicated to achieving a sense of generous spaciousness and airiness that connects occupants to the outside world, with levels of comfort and practicality unrivalled in the sub-compact SUV segment. Contemporary fabrics and textured materials create a solid, premium feel, with the quality of soft-touch materials.

 

The interior was designed with a focus on space and light to elevate the sense of airiness in the cabin. This airy feeling is amplified by a unique ‘Air Diffusion System’ where L-shaped vents are positioned in the top corners of the dashboard. This new system addresses a disparity in traditional vent configurations, where passengers often feel uncomfortable with air flowing directly onto them. The system subtly directs a stream of air along the front side windows to the roof, creating a vortex of air beside and above occupants. The effect of these new vents does not impact directly on passengers but creates a comfortable internal environment for all.

 

The sense of connection with the outside world begins with excellent outward visibility. This has been enabled by several enhancements.  Firstly, a new driving position, which is 10 mm higher than the previous model. In addition, windows that are designed to admit as much light as possible, which are aided by the horizontally orientated, noiseless instrumental panel to the flat line of the bonnet. Furthermore, the mirror attachment has moved lower down the door, improving visibility around the three-quarter area when turning.

 

Honda's next-generation body stabilising front seats feature mat-structure support, replacing the previous spring set-up, which helps prevent fatigue on long journeys and increases comfort in everyday use. For additional comfort while driving, the interior controls are optimally positioned as close as possible to the driver's field of vision. The uncluttered, simple-to-use layout further adds to the sense of spaciousness, with instantly recognisable audio and ventilation controls allowing for safe and intuitive operation.

 

Platform and packaging

Although overall vehicle dimensions are similar to the previous model, the new HR-V offers greater leg room and shoulder space, for an enhanced feeling of spaciousness and comfort. In addition to the 35 mm increase in rear leg room, there is an additional two-degree recline compared to the previous generation HR-V, enabled by Honda's centre tank layout and clever packaging of hybrid components. The platform configuration also allows Honda to retain the exceptionally versatile rear Magic Seat set-up, that offers both fold-flat or flip-up seat flexibility, depending on load space required.

Easy loading access has not been compromised by the coupe-inspired roofline. The clever packaging and Magic Seats, a lower tailgate edge, tailgate aperture, low, flat cargo floor all work in unison to provide this. The resulting cargo space can easily accommodate a wide variety of luggage and lifestyle-related equipment. For example, two adult mountain bikes (with the front wheels removed) can be loaded and stowed upright with ease. Loading convenience is enhanced by a hands-free ‘Power Tailgate Walk Away Close’ function* with increased functionality over other similar systems. The smart key proximity function detects when the key is moving away from the car, to automatically start closing the tailgate.

Storage space within the HR-V is also optimised, a centre console sits in the middle of the cabin plus a front pocket for small items with USB charging sockets in the front and back*, in addition to a wireless charging pad*. The premium audio system and external amplifier*, and touch-activated cabin lights further reinforce the premium interior feel and comfortable ambience.

 

Applying Honda's M/M principle, the HR-V platform has been engineered with hybrid drivetrain components cleverly packaged into the chassis and within the engine bay. This, combined with Honda's innovative centre fuel tank layout and the integration of the battery beneath the trunk space rather than the floor of the car, enables the HR-V to provide maximum comfort for four adults, despite the additional e:HEV components.

Efficient and responsive powertrain

Honda's proven e:HEV hybrid technology delivers a smooth and enjoyable driving experience, with responsive performance and impressive fuel efficiency. It comprises two compact, powerful electric motors connected to a 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, with peak power output from the propulsion motor of 96 kW (131 PS) and maximum torque of 253Nm at 4,500 rpm.

The e:HEV set-up includes three interchangeable drive modes, automatically selected for the prevailing driving requirements. For ultimate efficiency, the HR-V pulls off in electric mode, seamlessly changing to hybrid mode when the engine is under high-torque demand, with the petrol engine used when driving at higher, more constant speeds. The driving dynamics are enhanced through the various performance modes – Sport, Normal and Econ, while the additional drive mode B can be selected through the gear shifter for stronger regenerative braking and a more EV-like experience. The level of energy regeneration and the strength of the deceleration effect can be adjusted to suit the driver's preference by using Deceleration Selector behind the steering wheel, to provide a variety of driving experiences.

Advanced and intuitive connectivity
The all-new Honda HR-V provides seamless in-car connectivity that allows owners to connect to their everyday lives with ease. The intuitive 9” LCD touchscreen interface is designed to minimise driver distraction, with a simplified and fully customisable menu layer enabling easy access to convenience features and controls. HMI operation time is greatly improved compared to previous model HMI systems, making it quick and easy to switch between Apps and providing fast response to inputs and commands. The driver is also able to decide how much advanced driver-assistance system information is displayed on the 7” TFT e:HEV meter, to further reduce distraction while driving.

 

The interface, which is navigated using familiar smartphone-style controls, also enables smartphone mirroring via Apple CarPlay (through Bluetooth, WiFi or cable) and Android Auto (cable). Over-the-air software updates allows upgrades to the latest features and apps.

 

Enhanced safety

The all-new HR-V is equipped with Honda SENSING™, for the first time, and features a comprehensive range of class-leading advanced safety technologies and driver aids. Honda SENSING™ receives an upgrade for the all-new HR-V including the application of a new wider, higher-definition monocular front camera and high-speed image processing chips that improves upon the previous camera and radar sensor combination. It also includes, improved night-time operation of the Pedestrian Collision Mitigation Steering System and the Collision Mitigation Brake System (CMBS), which now detects oncoming vehicles crossing the path of the car, including cyclists and motorcycles, and applies the brakes.

 

New Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) technology introduced for the all-new HR-V improves safety when changing lanes and passing vehicles. The steering angle and lateral G-force is now assessed in conjunction with the enhanced camera images to accelerate the car earlier during manoeuvres. This delivers a safer, smoother transition when pulling out. ACC also boasts a low-speed follow function and brake control to maintain set speed during hill descent.

 

Blind Spot Information now features on the all-new HR-V*. It uses radar technology to automatically detect vehicles in the driver’s blind spot and alerts the driver via a warning symbol in the door mirror. The detection distance has been improved from 3m to 25m for increased driver confidence.

 

Cross Traffic Monitor has also been strengthened, this uses rear side radar sensors to warn the driver of approaching vehicles from left or right when reversing. An audible and visual warning is provided here.

 

Hill Descent Control, available for the first time in Europe on the HR-V, operates from a minimum speed of just 3 km/h. This technology enables greater and smoother control on low-grip surfaces and steep descents to increase driving confidence in a wider range of conditions – from navigating slippery outdoor carpark ramps to tackling steep snowy roads.

Following is a summary of his formal remarks:

Honda is a mobility company that offers a wide range of products which, in total, makes Honda the world's largest power unit manufacturer. Since its founding and through our wide array of power units, Honda has always been contributing to the advancement of mobility and people’s daily lives by providing the “power” which enables people to take action.

 

By becoming the “power” that supports people who are trying to do things through their own initiative, including those who are trying to make changes to the society they live in and others who strive to enhance the quality of people’s daily lives, we will help people expand their own potential.

                                             

 

<What Honda wants to achieve/direction of our initiatives>

Honda will work comprehensively to address challenges in the areas of the environment and safety. At the same time, for the future, Honda will strive to lead advancements which will be made in the areas of mobility, the power unit, energy and robotics.

 

Moreover, to have a firm footing in working toward our environmental and safety goals, we will remain committed to ensure the attainment of our goal to “solidify our existing businesses”.

 

    Environmental Initiatives

 

1-1. Three initiatives in pursuit of “zero environmental impact”

 

Honda will strive to realize carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities Honda is involved in by 2050. Striving for “zero environmental impact” of not only our products but the entire product lifecycle including our corporate activities, Honda will focus on the following areas as the “three-pillars” of our initiatives:

- Carbon neutrality

- Clean energy

- Resource circulation

 

・ In addition to the electrification of our motorcycle and automobile products, we will expand the range of electrified products with our Honda Mobile Power Pack swappable battery and expand utilization of renewable energy by enabling infrastructure-linked smart power operations.

 

・ For the further expansion of the use of renewable energy, we will be proactive in promoting the utilization of hydrogen. We will strive to realize a “multi-pathway of energy,” which is a concept of utilizing a wide variety of energy sources including carbon-neutral fuels, which will be effective in all areas, including where electrification is difficult, such as with aircraft.

 

・ Including more effective ways to reuse and recycle batteries, Honda is pursuing research on material recycling and will take on the challenge of developing products made from 100% sustainable materials.

 

・ We also will continue to work on the concept of “Honda eMaaS” through which Honda will contribute to the “freedom of mobility” and “expanded use of renewable energy” by connecting electrified mobility products and energy service. Honda eMaaS will be steadily pursued while focusing on the following three core areas:

- Expansion of the utilization of Mobile Power Packs

- Utilization of large-capacity batteries for electrified vehicles

- Application and implementation of fuel cell systems.

 

1-2. Electrification of automobile products

 

In order to achieve our carbon-free goal on a “tank-to-wheel” basis, as the responsibility of an automaker, Honda will strive to increase the ratio of battery-electric vehicles (EVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCVs) within overall unit sales in all major markets of electrification combined to 40% by 2030, to 80% by 2035, and then to 100% globally by 2040. These are challenging targets, and to attain them, we must put forth a collective effort of our entire value chain. However, we decided to set high goals so that all of us share the vision of what we are trying to accomplish and take on challenges toward the realization of our goals.

 

■North America

・ In North America, we will strive for an EV/FCV unit sales ratio of 40% by 2030, 80% by 2035 and 100% by 2040. Leveraging the alliance with GM as one of our strategic pillars, we will pursue electrification in North America efficiently while taking advantage of the respective strengths of both companies

 

・ Honda and GM are jointly developing two large-sized EV models using GM’s Ultium batteries, and we are planning to introduce these models to the North American market as model year 2024 vehicles, one from Honda brand and the other from the Acura brand.

 

・ Starting from the second half of the 2020s, Honda will launch a series of new EV models which adopt e:Architecture, a completely new EV platform led by Honda. These EV models will first be introduced to the North American market, and then to other regions of the world.

 

■China

・ In China, we will strive for an EV/FCV unit sales ratio of 40% by 2030, 80% by 2035 and 100% by 2040.

 

・ In China, we have been introducing EV models while utilizing local resources, and we will further accelerate this approach from here forward. We will introduce 10 Honda-brand EV models within five years. As the first of the 10 models, the mass-production model based on the Honda SUV e:prototype is scheduled to go on sale in spring 2022.

 

・ We will further pursue the utilization of local resources, which includes strengthening our collaboration with CATL for the supply of batteries, which are core components for electrified vehicles.

■Japan

・ In Japan, we will strive for an EV/FCV unit sales ratio of 20% by 2030, 80% by 2035 and 100% by 2040. Also, including hybrid-electric vehicles, we will strive to electrify 100% of our automobile unit sales in Japan by 2030.

 

・ Including the first introduction of an EV model in the K-car segment in 2024, we will continue making progress in the electrification of our mini-vehicles with both hybrid and EV models.

 

・ For the procurement of batteries, we will strive to realize a “local production and local procurement” approach in Japan, which also will contribute to the growth of domestic industries in Japan.

 

・ In the area of mobility services (MaaS), we are aiming to introduce the Cruise Origin, an electric self-driving vehicle Honda is currently developing jointly with GM and Cruise, in the Japanese MaaS market in the mid-2020s. With this aim, we will be starting development for testing in Japan from this year.

 

In order to secure the high competitiveness of our EVs of the future, Honda is conducting independent research on all-solid-state batteries as the next generation batteries which will realize high capacity and low cost. We will undertake the verification of production technology using a demonstration line, starting this fiscal year. We will begin accelerating this research with an aim to make all-solid-state batteries available for our new models to be introduced in the second half of the 2020s.

 

Honda has a track record of offering customers “creative movers,” products in Japan such as Odyssey and StepWGN that help create better daily lives for people. This stance will not change in the world of EVs. By combining digital technologies with Honda’s existing strengths, such as unique creativity and original designs, we will continue to add unique value only Honda can offer to our EVs.

 

 

1-3. Electrification of motorcycle products

 

Honda will strive to lead the motorcycle industry at the forefront of its environmental initiatives with an approach which will include not only electrification but also the improvement of the fuel efficiency of gasoline engines, utilization of biofuels and other strategies.

 

・ The key to successful electrification of motorcycle products is to consider the battery, which is still expensive, separately from the motorcycle. In developed countries, where electrification is in strong demand by society, we will pursue electrification utilizing Mobile Power Pack, targeting our B-to-B (business-to-business) and B-to-G (business-to-national/local governments) customers.

 

・ For personal-use customers, we must not only enhance our product lineup but also make a large number of battery-swapping stations available and ensure convenience to users by making them compatible with EVs of other makers. To this end, Honda has established a consortium with other motorcycle OEMs in Japan and Europe, respectively, to develop technology standards for swappable batteries. Honda has a vision to expand Mobile Power Pack applications beyond motorcycles to power products and micro-mobility products. With this vision, we have begun demonstration testing in India using “rickshaw” type tricycle taxis.

 

・ To accommodate the diverse needs of our customers, in addition to introducing GYRO e: and GYRO CANOPY e: in the area of business-use bikes, scheduled for this year, we are going to introduce three new EV models in the area of personal use, in classes with engine sizes of below 50cc and below 125cc., by 2024. We also will introduce new products in the “FUN” area as well.

 

 

1-4. Fuel cell

 

Hydrogen is expected to be popularized as a renewable energy source. Honda has a long history of researching, developing and commercializing FC technologies.

 

While continuing our collaboration with GM, Honda will strive to reduce costs and realize a “hydrogen society” by expanding our lineup of FCVs and also by using FC systems for a wide range of applications, including commercial trucks as well as both stationary and movable power sources.

 

    Safety Initiatives

 

Honda will strive for zero traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles globally by 2050. The major challenge we will face as we work toward this goal is how to eliminate motorcycle collision fatalities, especially in emerging countries. As a company that has both motorcycle and automobile businesses, we will continue to strengthen our research on safety technologies that enable motorcycles and automobiles to safely coexist and lead the way in realizing a collision-free society from the standpoint of both hardware and software.

 

・ Since many motorcycle collision fatalities involve automobiles, we will strive to apply our omnidirectional ADAS (advanced driver-assistance system) to all new automobile models we introduce in developed countries by 2030.

 

・ By leveraging the knowledge and know-how we have amassed through research and development of our Level 3 automated driving technologies, we will further enhance the intelligence of ADAS, which increases the percentage of collision patterns covered by our ADAS.

 

・ Particularly in emerging countries, there are many collisions that can be prevented through traffic safety education activities and by approaching the issue from the perspective of infrastructure and government policies. Therefore, Honda will focus also on such areas including strengthening of educational programs and government/industry relations activities.

 

 

    Research & Development Initiatives

 

In order for Honda to keep making progress in its environmental and safety initiatives, it becomes essential for us to invest aggressively in the area of research and development. Therefore, regardless of fluctuations in our sales revenue, Honda will invest a total of approximately 5 trillion yen as R&D expenses over the next six years.

 

In the field of research and development, including the system and capability for the development of digital technologies which needs to be further strengthened, we will take necessary measures, including alliances, as quickly as possible.

 

Moreover, we also will take proactive measures to build a strong value chain from the perspective of electrification.

 

    Preparations for the future

 

I believe that the “unique characteristics of Honda” are represented by the “value we derive by thinking through the very essence of things” and our “originality.” Honda is a company with a group of individuals who have the strong desire to be original. To reflect the values, meet the needs of modern consumers and create a desirable yet practical car, Honda engineers and designers conceived a new proposition for the interior of the next-generation hybrid HR-V. By cleverly incorporating Honda's latest structural technologies and an interior design ethos centred on the concepts of light and wind, the all-new model achieves superior levels of interior comfort and space in the competitive compact B-SUV segment.

 

The feature that may have the greatest impact on the overall interior environment for passengers is also the most subtle. The unique Air Diffusion System introduces a new concept of air conditioning, with L-shaped vents positioned in the top corners of the dashboard delivering the restorative effects of a natural breeze to all occupants. 

 

"This idea was born from the concept of designing light and wind to improve passenger comfort," said Honda Large Project Leader, Yoshitomo Ihashi. "We set out to eradicate as many areas of discomfort as possible by using nature as our inspiration. This new ventilation configuration resolves a disparity in traditional vent configurations, where passengers often feel uncomfortable with air flowing directly onto them. The result is a sense of airiness, with a more comfortable internal environment for all occupants."

 

A dial is provided to switch seamlessly between 3 modes - the normal outlet with forward-directed air flow, the Air Diffusion System which creates a new gentle flow of air, and close which shuts off the air. When the Air Diffusion System is selected, it discreetly directs a stream of soft ‘breeze’ like air along the side windows, brushing the cheeks of the front passengers. The air also travels to the roof, creating a gentle vortex of air that does not impact directly on passengers. The heat transmitted through the side windows in summer is blocked by an air curtain that forms around front and rear seat passengers, as is the cold air during winter. The rear seat passengers will also benefit from air via the rear console outlet. The combination of these features ensures a consistent internal temperature is maintained, in all weather conditions. 

 

Creating space and comfort

The premise of the HR-V’s interior design centres on the interaction between the occupant and the car, to fully integrate it within their everyday lives. This starts from the moment they enter the car to the minute they exit. Each element of interaction with the new HR-V is designed around an optimal user experience first.

 

Every interior design feature within the cockpit structure is dedicated to achieving a sense of spaciousness and airiness that connects occupants to the outside world. This begins with windows that are designed to admit as much light as possible, with the excellent outward visibility further aided by flat line of the bonnet and clear sightlines that make it easy to accurately determine the vehicle's position on the road.

 

A fundamental consideration for interior comfort was the optimal positioning of the interior controls. The uncluttered, simple-to-use layout adds to the sense of calm, with the audio and ventilation controls and instrument panel positioned as close as possible to the driver's field of vision. Instantly recognisable controls allow for safe and intuitive operation.

 

To maintain the balance of premium SUV styling and exceptional interior space, Honda engineers packaged all hybrid drivetrain components within the chassis and engine bay, and positioned the fuel tank beneath the front seats. The origins of this approach are found in Honda's 'Man-Maximum, Machine-Minimum' (M/M) development principle, which is based on the belief that the purpose of technology and design is to serve the needs of the driver and passengers.

 

This allowed the newly-developed rear seats to be positioned 30mm further to the rear, also giving  an additional two degrees of recline compared to the previous generation HR-V. While head room is comparable to the class standard, the sedan-like seating position in the HR-V provides an additional 35mm legroom and shoulder space comparable to SUV’s a class above.

 

To further optimise comfort for front occupants, the all-new HR-V introduces body stabilising front seats featuring mat-structure support, replacing the previous spring set-up. This helps to prevent fatigue on long journeys and increase comfort in everyday use.

Honda has announced that the all-new HR-V, which is set to go on sale across Europe from late 2021, will solely be equipped with the company’s advanced e:HEV hybrid powertrain. By introducing the proven powertrain to the compact SUV, a new blend of efficiency and performance has been introduced to this highly competitive class.

 

The next-generation HR-V’s e:HEV powertrain produces a total power output of 96kW (131PS), coupled with 253Nm of torque. The effect is an effortless and comfortable journey, whether travelling through urban areas or cruising at high speed on motorways. Its fuel-efficient hybrid system produces CO2 emissions from 122 g/km (WLTP) and fuel economy of 5.4L /100km (WLTP), while also accelerating the HR-V from standstill to 62 mph / 100 km/h in 10.6 seconds.

 

The all-new HR-V is the latest model to join the e:HEV family, joining the CR-V and Jazz in being available only with a hybrid powertrain. With no need to plug-in and charge, the HR-V is suitable for every driving situation, combining the responsive performance and efficiency of an electric vehicle with the usability and flexibility of traditional petrol and diesel powered cars.

 

e:HEV: low emissions, responsive performance

The advanced e:HEV hybrid powertrain offers a unique full hybrid experience, winning acclaim across Europe for combining strong performance with high levels of real-world efficiency and refinement. The system consists of two compact, powerful electric motors that work alongside an Atkinson-cycle 1.5-litre DOHC i-VTEC petrol engine, a lithium-ion battery and an innovative fixed-gear transmission coupled to an intelligent power control unit.

 

The e:HEV powertrain is already proven to produce a class-best ratio of fuel economy to acceleration in the new Jazz. Its application in the HR-V utilizes a similar arrangement for equally impressive efficiency, as revisions to the internal-combustion and IPU have resulted in an increase in torque. The number of battery cells has also been revised, increasing from 48 to 60 to account for the HR-V’s larger size, and to allow greater storage and deployment of electric power over the 80kW Jazz. Despite this larger battery cell size, interior space has not been compromised thanks to clever engineering of the battery pack. Further revisions to the powertrain include a reduction in the gear ratio between the electric motor and wheels, to cumulatively improve acceleration and the HR-V’s dynamic performance.

 

What sets the e:HEV system apart is how its three drive modes seamlessly interchange to ensure optimum performance of each component in both urban and motorway driving. The intelligent Electronic Control Unit automatically, and constantly, cycles between Electric Drive, Hybrid Drive or Engine Drive depending on which is the most fuel-efficient drive mode at that specific driving situation.

 

When driving at a constant high-speed, such as on the highway, the system operates on engine drive as that is the most efficient for that scenario. If further acceleration is required, such as when overtaking, the car will switch to hybrid drive for that additional performance boost. Additionally, when in Hybrid Drive, power from the petrol engine-driven generator can be diverted to recharge the battery, offering additional efficiency benefits.

 

‘Sport’ mode can be activated via the drive selector, enabling even sharper throttle response, whilst ‘Econ’ mode adjusts the air conditioning system and throttle response for an emphasis on fuel efficiency. In addition to ‘Normal’ mode, where the car is best balanced between both worlds, drivers can switch across all driving modes at the toggle of a switch.

 

For an increased EV-like experience, drivers can also select B-range from the transmission, which offers selectable levels of energy recovery when coasting or braking. The level of energy recovery and the resulting strength of the deceleration effect can be substantially increased over the regular D-range, by using the paddles behind the steering wheel

 

The transfer between these drive modes – including the start of the engine to generate electric power – is virtually unnoticeable to the occupants. Rather than using a conventional power split system with a planetary gearbox which causes high levels of friction, the fixed gear transmission creates much less resistance through minimised gearing, ultimately consuming less energy when driving purely electric

 

Due to this, Honda’s highly efficient system achieves a higher ratio of accumulated electric drive time when driving in cities than other hybrids on sale today.

Using engineering expertise from its motorsport team, Honda’s race-winning Formula 1 Hybrid Power Unit programme has inspired the technology in the e:HEV hybrid system to deliver unrivalled levels of energy efficiency on the road. As a result, the new e:HEV HR-V offers exceptional efficiency and power output in a wide range of driving conditions.

 

Hybrid heritage

The original 1999 Honda Insight established Honda as a world leader in hybrid technology. The first hybrid model from any manufacturer to be sold in Europe, it introduced the brand’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system, which relied mainly on the engine and called upon electric motor assistance and brake energy recuperation when required to enhance acceleration and reduce fuel consumption. Honda has continued to develop its hybrid technology, and the advanced two-motor e:HEV system is now used in the Jazz, CR-V, all-new HR-V and upcoming 11th-generation Civic.

TOKYO, Japan, September 8, 2021 – Honda today announced that it will start a testing program for autonomous vehicles in September 2021, taking a step toward an autonomous vehicle mobility service (MaaS) business in Japan, which Honda is planning to launch under collaboration with Cruise and General Motors.

The testing program for autonomous vehicles mobility service technologies will be conducted in Utsunomiya City and Haga Town, Tochigi Prefecture. As the first step to prepare for thorough testing, a high-definition map of the area will be created using a specialized vehicle for mapping. Once the high-definition map is ready, the autonomous vehicle, Cruise AV, will be driven on public roads to develop and test autonomous vehicles adapted to the traffic environment and the relevant laws and regulations in Japan.

Honda and Cruise will jointly work on the testing program, and also it will be pursued at a new operations test site to be established within a Honda facility in Tochigi Prefecture.

Further ahead, Honda aims to launch its autonomous vehicle MaaS business in Japan using the Cruise Origin, a vehicle jointly developed by Honda, Cruise and General Motors, exclusively for autonomous vehicle mobility service businesses. Honda Mobility Solutions Co., Ltd., a Honda subsidiary for MaaS business, will be the operator of such business in Japan.

Hamburg/Frankfurt, Germany, 11 October 2021 - Honda is showcasing the brand’s self-driving technology at ITS World Congress 2021, as part of the L3Pilot automated driving project. The EU-driven initiative, a joint effort of 34 partners from 12 countries, is assessing the viability of SAE Level 3 and 4 self-driving functions on ordinary roads, with Honda providing four Honda AD research vehicles to support the research program. The vehicles are based on the platform of Honda’s Legend executive saloon. 

 

Drawing on its world-leading expertise in autonomous technologies, the Honda R&D Europe team focused on two research scenarios ‘Traffic Jam Chauffeur’ and ‘Motorway Chauffeur’, covering over 25,900km of testing on German roads.

 

Honda’s advanced AD technology, which monitors traffic conditions on the highway and takes full control of the car from the driver if it determines that is safe to do so, has helped test vehicles pilot more than 25,900km across Germany. Operational data was then shared with the L3Pilot project for further research and analysis of the impact and benefits of automated driving in Europe.

 

"We view automated driving technology as a vital part of our advanced safety technologies," said Dr. Robert Kastner, Large Project Leader of the L3Pilot Project at Honda R&D Europe. "Following on from our years of research in this field, we are delighted to be an active part of this EU innovation initiative, and to support advanced research activity for automated driving that is aiming to further increase safety and further reduce accidents on European roads.”

 

Two Honda AD research vehicles will be at the ITS World Congress in Hamburg, joining other L3Pilot consortium test cars operating on public roads in and around the show, to demonstrate the potential of automated driving technology.

 

Honda has long been at the forefront globally in researching and developing safety technologies. Earlier this year, the company committed to strive for zero traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles globally by 2050.

 

Launched in 2017, the L3Pilot project was initiated to create a standardised Europe-wide piloting environment for automated driving. Coordinating the activities of automakers and technology providers across the continent, the project raises awareness for the commercialisation of self-driving vehicles through large-scale piloting of SAE Level 3 and Level 4 functions in passenger cars, from motorway and city driving to traffic jams and parking scenarios. In total, more than 400,000km have been driven on motorways including 200,000km in automated mode.

 

The ITS World Congress 2021 begins on 11 October, with L3Pilot Driving Demonstrations and from 13 October to 14 October. The L3Pilot project has received funding from the European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement number 723051.

Further evolved from the previous system, Honda SENSING 360 features an expanded sensing range not only in the front and rear, but omnidirectionally around the vehicle.

Application of Honda SENSING 360 will begin in 2022 with automobile product introduced in the Chinese market. Honda will strive to expand the application to all models to go on sale in all major markets by 2030.

Striving for a collision-free society for everyone sharing the road, represented by the global safety slogan “Safety for Everyone,” Honda has been pursuing the research and development of safety technologies from the perspective of both hardware and software. Since its introduction in 2014, the Honda SENSING*1 advanced safety and driver-assistive system has been further advancing its functions, expanding its application to mass-production models globally and supporting Honda customers in a variety of driving situations.

Honda SENSING 360*1 realized 360-degree sensing*2 by adding a total of five units of millimeter-wave radar in front and at each corner of the vehicle, in addition to the monocular camera*3 which is used by the current Honda SENSING. When making a right or left turn at an intersection on a surface street, when the system detects other vehicles or pedestrians and recognizes the risk of a collision, the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) will kick in. Advanced from the CMBS of the current Honda SENSING, the CMBS for Honda SENSING 360 has a broader range of detection that is expanded from in front of the vehicle to include all directions around the vehicle. This enables the system to assist the driver in the avoidance and mitigation of a collision with another vehicle or pedestrian entering an intersection at the same time from different directions.

    Front Cross Traffic Warning

When the vehicle is driving at a low speed or starting from a stop at an intersection on a surface street, the system notifies the driver of information about vehicles approaching to cross the intersection from the sides and front. When it recognizes the risk of a collision with the crossing vehicle, the system provides audio warnings and visual warnings on the meter to alert the driver and prompt collision avoidance actions.

    Lane Change Collision Mitigation

When making a lane change, the system assists the avoidance of a collision with a vehicle in the adjacent lane approaching from behind. When the system recognizes the risk of collision with a vehicle approaching from the blind spot behind the vehicle, the system provides audio warnings and visual warnings on the meter to alert the driver and assist steering for collision avoidance.

While driving with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow and the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) activated and when certain conditions are satisfied on an expressway, when the driver puts on the turn signal*6, the system assists with steering for the lane change.

While cornering on an expressway with ACC engaged, the system properly adjusts vehicle speed. Using a front camera, the system detects the curvature of the lane before reaching the curve and assists the driver to complete smooth cornering.

The all-new HR-V delivers a unique and responsive driving experience, with exceptional efficiency delivered by Honda’s powerful and efficient two-motor e:HEV powertrain – featured as standard for the first time on a HR-V. The next-generation of the brand’s popular compact SUV offers class-leading space, comfort and utility, as well as advanced safety and technology features, all within a bold and sleek coupe-inspired form.

 

Available in Europe from late 2021, the new HR-V is the latest model in Honda’s line-up to wear the e:HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) badge, following the refreshed CR-V and all-new Jazz that launched in 2020. It expands Honda’s electrified line up as the brand moves further towards its goal of electrifying all of its European mainstream models by 2022.

 

The next-generation hybrid-only HR-V is the culmination of an extensive review of modern consumer attitudes. Having evaluated how today’s active, connected population identifies and selects high value products, Honda developed the HR-V not only as an all-new compact SUV, but as a consumer product that must appeal through desirability, functionality and usability.

Applying the mantra ‘Amp up your life’, Honda engineers focused on enabling active lifestyles throughout every stage of the new HR-V’s development. The objective was to widen the possibilities of what customers can do with the car to support and ‘amplify’ their everyday lives.

 

The all-new HR-V has a contemporary coupe-SUV body that appeals through the simplicity of its design, while its exceptionally spacious and versatile interior is more user-oriented and comfortable to sit in. This compelling combination owes much to Honda's compact, integrated powertrain technology and the centre fuel tank layout. The result is class-leading interior space, as well as unrivalled flexibility thanks to the versatile Magic Seats that offer both ‘fold-flat or ‘flip-up’ options depending on the cargo space required.

 

As with the exterior, the spacious interior has a solid, premium SUV feel, but with contemporary fabrics and soft-touch materials. The modern, minimalist aesthetic is created by the horizontal sweep of the instrument panel and uncluttered lines and surfaces throughout. The feeling of airiness and space is elevated by a new air diffusion system that creates a curtain of fresh air beside and above passengers, flowing from unique L-shaped vents positioned in the top corners of the dashboard.

The all-new HR-V is equipped as standard with Honda’s advanced e:HEV hybrid powertrain, giving Honda’s popular compact SUV the perfect blend of efficiency and performance. The all-new HR-V joins the refreshed CR-V and recently launched Jazz in being available only with a petrol-electric powertrain.

 

e:HEV has won acclaim across Europe for combining strong performance with high levels of real-world efficiency and refinement. With no need to plug-in and charge, the HR-V is suitable for every driving situation, combining the responsive performance and efficiency of an electric vehicle with the usability of conventionally powered cars.

 

Low emissions, responsive performance

The e:HEV powertrain consists of two compact, powerful electric motors that work alongside an Atkinson-cycle 1.5-litre DOHC i-VTEC petrol engine, a lithium-ion battery and an innovative fixed-gear transmission coupled to a power control unit. The system benefits from advancements made over 20 years of hybrid development in Honda road cars and in Formula 1®.

 

For its installation in the HR-V, the e:HEV’s power is boosted from 109PS  as found in the Jazz, to a total power output of 96kW (131PS) and 253Nm of torque.

 

The e:HEV system in the HR-V is more compact than in the Jazz, and has a higher degree of energy density that enables it to generate greater torque. The number of cells in the battery has been increased by 25%, allowing greater storage and deployment of electric power over the 80kW Jazz, with the power control unit (PCU) now downsized and integrated into the engine compartment, and water cooled instead of air cooled, for improved heat management. The gear ratio between the electric motor and wheels has also been lowered, which further improves
the HR-V’s dynamic performance.

 

The effect is an effortless and comfortable journey, whether travelling through urban areas or cruising at high speed on motorways. The HR-V produces CO2 emissions from 122 g/km (WLTP), returns fuel economy of 5.4l /100km (WLTP), and accelerates from standstill to 62mph / 100km/h in 10.6 seconds.

 

Optimised drive modes

What sets the e:HEV system apart is how its three drive modes seamlessly interchange to ensure optimum performance of each component in both urban and motorway driving. The intelligent Electronic Control Unit automatically, and constantly, cycles between Electric Drive, Hybrid Drive or Engine Drive depending on which is the most fuel-efficient drive mode at that specific driving situation.

 

When driving at a constant high-speed, such as on the highway, the system operates on engine drive as that is the most efficient for that scenario. If further acceleration is required, such as when overtaking, the car will switch to hybrid drive for that additional performance boost. Additionally, when in Hybrid Drive, power from the petrol engine-driven generator can be diverted to recharge the battery, offering additional efficiency benefits.

 

‘Sport’ mode can be activated via the drive selector, enabling even sharper throttle response, whilst ‘Econ’ mode adjusts the air conditioning system and throttle response for an emphasis on fuel efficiency. In addition to ‘Normal’ mode, where the car is best balanced between both worlds, drivers can switch across all driving modes at the toggle of a switch.

 

EV-like responsiveness

For an increased EV-like experience, drivers can also select B-range from the transmission, which offers selectable levels of energy recovery when coasting or braking. The level of energy recovery and the resulting strength of the deceleration effect can be substantially increased over the regular D-range, by using the paddles behind the steering wheel.

 

The transfer between these drive modes – including the start of the engine to generate electric power – is virtually unnoticeable to the occupants. Rather than using a conventional power-split system with a planetary gearbox which causes high levels of friction, the fixed-gear transmission creates much less friction, ultimately leading to less energy consumption when driving purely electric.

 

Crucially, Honda’s highly efficient fixed-gear system also achieves a higher proportion of accumulated electric drive time when in cities than other hybrids on sale today.

Using engineering expertise from its motorsport team, Honda’s race-winning Formula 1 Hybrid Power Unit programme has inspired the technology in the e:HEV hybrid system to deliver unrivalled levels of energy efficiency on the road. As a result, the new e:HEV HR-V offers exceptional efficiency and power output in a wide range of driving conditions.

 

Hybrid heritage

The original 1999 Honda Insight established Honda as a world leader in hybrid technology. The first hybrid model from any manufacturer to be sold in Europe, it introduced the brand’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system, which relied mainly on the engine and called upon electric motor assistance and brake energy recuperation to enhance acceleration and reduce fuel consumption.

 

Honda has continued to develop its hybrid technology, and the advanced two-motor e:HEV system is now used in the Jazz, CR-V, all-new HR-V and upcoming 11th-generation Civic.

When designing and developing the latest generation HR-V, Honda engineers completely reimagined the popular compact-SUV from the ground up. Honda’s research found that modern consumers choose products not only on the basis of competent performance or appealing aesthetics, but also on how it integrates with their lives and whether the product fulfils their individual requirements.

 

As a result, the new-generation HR-V has a contemporary coupe-SUV body that achieves a desirable yet rare combination of premium and dynamic design and exceptional space efficiency. It embodies Honda’s new simple, clean, modern design philosophy already seen in recent new models, and successfully extends the brand's reputation for quality, functionality and practicality.

 

Defined by the same key design concepts of function and beauty, the compact coupe-inspired shape is familiar yet exciting in appearance, with a playful character and confident SUV stance. Its sleek silhouette is achieved by increasing road clearance to 188mm (MRO) – close to that of a full-scale AWD vehicle -
and reducing the roof height by 20mm compared to the previous model.

 

Increasing the size of the standard-fit wheels to 18 inches creates a stronger, more purposeful ratio of body height versus tyre diameter that is seen on many premium-brand SUVs. As well as the 225/50R18 tyre size having the largest outer diameter of any 18-inch tyre, it is also the largest in the compact SUV class. Proportionally, by reducing the front overhang by 20mm, and with 20mm added to the rear overhang, the rugged and robust SUV stance is further reinforced, and provides a level of solidity to the overall aesthetic that modern customers desire.

 

The forward-orientated character lines and smooth surfaces of the new HR-V create a sense of energetic spirit and dynamism. The exterior features deliberately have been incorporated into the body forms with the headlights, unique body-coloured grille and distinctive lower mesh grille seamlessly integrated within the nose and front quarter panels, giving it a more sculpted appearance and creating a sleek, bold and defined expression.

 

The body sides present a contemporary, uncluttered aesthetic, with a crisp horizontal shoulder line running from the rear light cluster to the front headlights, generating a sense of forward momentum. The raked A-pillar and appearance of an elongated bonnet create a premium look and visually move the cabin volume rearwards to further accentuate the sleek coupe-like proportions.

 

At the rear, the desire to achieve a combination of utility and aesthetic harmony is evident in the simple, elegant tailgate design, which neatly integrates the opening handle. The wide and tall aperture, low entry point and flat cargo floor all facilitate easy loading access, despite the coupe-inspired roofline.

 

Aerodynamic efficiency is achieved through the application of an air curtain slit at the front bumper, discreet lips at the rear side-sills and the sleek rear light bar shape, which have all been individually shaped to help to reduce air turbulence. Aided by the rear side-spoiler that reduces turbulence behind the vehicle without spoiling the sleek, clean design.

 

In pursuit of a more elegant appearance and to ensure that the exterior looks beautiful even close up, the designers paid great attention to the finer details. For example, the hood’s shut line with the fenders, seamlessly continues into the shoulder line for a mature, coherent appearance. These small design aspects ensure that the clean surfaces are not interrupted by unnecessary or unwanted shadows. This attention to detail is also apparent where the licence plate lights, tailgate handle and rear camera are integrated within the three-dimensional rear panel. This contributes to the ‘clean’ styling approach and is consistent with that of other recent Honda models, where the pursuit of simplicity is increasingly evident.

To reflect the values, needs and expectations of modern consumers, Honda engineers and designers conceived a new proposition for the interior of the next-generation hybrid HR-V.

 

By incorporating Honda’s ‘Man-Maximum, Machine-Minimum’ (M/M) development principle – based on the belief that technology exists to serve driver and passengers – and an interior design ethos centred on the concepts of light and wind, the all-new model offers standards of comfort and space that set new benchmarks in the competitive compact B-SUV segment.

 

Honda Large Project Leader, Yoshitomo Ihashi, explained: “We designed the all-new hybrid HR-V to reflect the exacting values and needs of modern consumers, and to appeal to a new generation of car owners. They demand purpose and innovation from the products they interact with. By cleverly applying our latest technologies and design ethos, we have created a car that will provide the spaciousness, connectivity, reliability and versatility required to fully support and enhance their everyday lives.”

 

Clever packaging increases interior space

To maintain the balance of premium SUV styling and exceptional interior space, Honda engineers packaged all hybrid drivetrain components within the chassis and engine bay. Fundamental developments include rerouting the air intake and incorporating components on top of the engine. This allows room for the electric motors, propulsion motor and generator to all be accommodated within the engine compartment.

 

Honda also reduced the size of the power control unit (PCU) by 20% compared with the previous-generation component. This allows the auxiliary 12v battery to also fit into the engine compartment, freeing up space at the rear. This is made possible by using the newest semiconductors for the PCU.

 

Also key to maximising cabin room is the positioning of the fuel tank in the centre of the chassis beneath the front seats, which is unique in this class. In addition, the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) unit has been made much more compact, allowing the interior to adopt a low, horizontally-oriented design for an increased forward view, and a greater sense of space, despite the compact exterior width of the car.

 

Setting new benchmarks for interior comfort

The premise of the HR-V’s interior design centres on the interaction between the occupant and the car, to better support and integrate with their everyday lives. This starts from the moment they enter the car. Every design element is dedicated to achieving a sense of generous spaciousness and airiness that connects occupants to the outside world. Each interaction with the new HR-V is designed to create an optimal user experience.

 

The sense of connection with the outside world begins with excellent forward visibility. This has been enabled by several enhancements. Firstly, a new driving position, which is 10mm higher than in the previous model. In addition, the windows are shaped to admit as much light as possible. Sight lines are aided by the flat line of the bonnet and rear-view mirrors that are now located lower down on the door.

 

The spacious and versatile interior is designed to reflect the lifestyle of the owner rather than the list price, with vibrant and high-quality materials and trim elements available across all grades.

 

Honda’s next-generation body-stabilising front seats feature mat-structure support, replacing the previous spring set-up, which helps prevent fatigue on long journeys and increases comfort in everyday use. For additional comfort while driving, the interior controls are carefully positioned within the driver’s field of vision. The uncluttered, simple-to-use layout adds to the sense of spaciousness, with instantly recognisable audio and ventilation controls allowing for safe and intuitive operation.

 

Although the overall vehicle dimensions are similar to those of the previous model, the new HR-V offers greater leg and shoulder room. In addition to the 35mm increase in rear leg room, there is an additional two-degree recline compared to the previous generation HR-V, enabled by Honda’s centre tank layout and clever packaging of hybrid components. The platform configuration also allows Honda to retain the exceptionally versatile rear Magic Seat set-up, that offers both fold-flat or flip-up seat flexibility, depending on load space required.

 

Air Diffusion System

The feature that may have the greatest impact on the overall interior environment for passengers is also the most subtle. The unique Air Diffusion System introduces a new concept of air conditioning, with L-shaped vents positioned in the top corners of the dashboard that deliver the restorative effects of a natural breeze to all occupants.

 

“This idea was born from the concept of designing light and wind to improve passenger comfort,” said Honda Large Project Leader, Yoshitomo Ihashi. “We set out to eradicate as many areas of discomfort as possible by using nature as our inspiration. This new ventilation approach resolves a disparity in traditional vent configurations, where passengers often feel uncomfortable with air flowing directly onto them. The result is a sense of calm airiness, with a more comfortable internal environment for all occupants.”

 

A tactile dial is used to switch between two modes: the normal outlet with forward-directed air flow and the Air Diffusion System which creates a new gentle flow of
air. When the Air Diffusion System is selected, it discreetly directs a stream of soft ‘breeze’ like air along the side windows, brushing the cheeks of the front passengers. The air also travels to the roof, creating a gentle vortex of air that is barely perceptible to passengers. The heat transmitted through the side windows in summer is blocked by an air curtain that forms around front and rear seat passengers, as is the cold air during winter.

 

The rear-seat passengers will also benefit from air via the rear console outlet.
The combination of these features ensures a consistent internal temperature is maintained in all weather conditions.

 

Class-leading cargo space

The all-new Honda HR-V has been engineered with a specific focus on widening the possibilities of what customers can do with the car. By following its M/M development principle and through clever packaging of hybrid components into the chassis and engine bay, Honda has achieved class-leading levels of cargo space, with the flexibility to support customers’ active lifestyles.

 

The result is impressive boot capacity despite the additional requirement for hybrid components. With a fully flat cargo floor and Honda’s versatile rear Magic Seats, the HR-V has the flexibility to accommodate a wide variety of luggage and lifestyle-related equipment.

 

Easy loading access is not compromised by the coupe-inspired roofline. The clever packaging, Magic Seats, low tailgate edge, wide tailgate aperture, and the low, flat cargo floor all work in unison to maximise space and access. Surfboards can be carried inside the car, and two adult mountain bikes (with the front wheels removed) can be loaded and stowed upright with ease. There is also room for an additional storage box, which is located under the boot floor for secure storage.

 

Loading convenience is enhanced by a hands-free ‘Power Tailgate Walk Away Close’ function*. The smart key proximity function detects when the key is moving away from the car, to automatically start closing the tailgate.

 

Storage space and connectivity points around the cabin have also been improved over the previous model. A large centre cubby swallows items large and small, and there are two USB charging sockets in the front and two in the back*, in addition to a wireless charging pad* discreetly located in the lower section of the center console, enabling all occupants to charge devices at the same time. The 10-speaker premium audio system and external amplifier*, and touch-activated cabin lights further reinforce the premium interior feel and comfortable, relaxing ambience.

Honda’s engineers analysed every detail of the HR-V driving experience to maximise driver enjoyment and comfort. Compared to its predecessor, the all-new HR-V has a more rigid body structure and benefits from extensive suspension, steering and braking enhancements so that it responds more precisely to driver inputs, and delivers a more assured, more rewarding and more comfortable driving experience.

 

Steering and suspension enhancements

The torsional rigidity and spring rate of the steering column has been increased by 15%, affording a smoother feel during direction changes. Initial corner turn-in is more direct when compared to the previous-generation HR-V, and the overall feel during manoeuvres is much more linear and precise.

 

The suspension is also more responsive, with a reduction in friction from the first steering input. To achieve this, the spring offset is increased to reduce lateral forces on the damper, which also features reduced inner friction. This combines with the low-friction ball joints and optimised bushings to provide a more linear and smooth movement.

At the rear, the compliance bushes have been modified in both construction and design to improve rear wheel control and ride comfort. The, now, liquid-filled bushes offer up increased damping performance and offer supreme low-frequency performance providing excellent primary ride, whilst absorbing certain frequency vibrations to improve secondary ride. In revising the bush design, a flange has been added to reduce lateral movement across the bush. By offering a more secure seating, the spring rate of the bush has also been reduced to further improve handling and ride comfort.

Honda’s Agile Handling Assist (AHA) system. AHA is another advanced technology that improves the dynamic stability of the car, particularly when reacting to fast steering inputs or high cornering loads, for example during emergency avoidance manoeuvres. AHA operates through the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system and lightly applies the brakes to the inner wheels when the steering wheel is turned. The result is increased vehicle responsiveness and stability, and a more stable and predictable driving experience.

 

Stopping power

Assured stopping power is delivered by a powerful braking system featuring 293mm ventilated front discs and 282mm solid discs at the rear. Furthermore, a bespoke electric Servo brake mated to the e:HEV system smoothly controls the regenerative and hydraulic brakes, affording smooth, assuring brake feel.

 

Additionally, the HR-V’s brake pedal has been repositioned with a keener focus on ergonomics, reducing driver fatigue over long distances. Continuing the exercise in fine-tuning, the gap and step between the accelerator and brake pedal is reduced by 5mm, with increased pedal surface. It’s a small adjustment that makes a big difference in feel when transitioning from brake pedal to accelerator.

 

Electronic brake systems include: Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Brake Assist System (BAS), Hill Start Assist (HAS) and Automatic Brake Hold (ABH). Hill Descent Control, available for the first time in Europe on the HR-V, operates from a minimum speed of just 3 km/h. This technology enables greater and smoother control on low-grip surfaces and steep descents to increase driving confidence in a wider range of conditions – from navigating slippery outdoor carpark ramps to tackling steep snowy roads.

 

Platform engineered for class-leading dynamics and comfort

Honda's current “Global Small Platform” has been updated for the all-new HR-V, with the ratio of high-tensile steel increased for improved body rigidity. In addition, 980 high-lambda steel is applied to the floor centre crossmember and the centre pillar inner, further increasing rigidity and reducing weight by 1.5kg. A ring structure has been added behind the C-pillars for further chassis reinforcement, allowing for greater control over each individual wheel offering improved ride quality and dynamic behaviour.

 

NVH improvements

As well as minimising weight impact of electrification and improving safety performance, the additional rigidity combines with the low-friction suspension upgrades to provide impressive base stability. This means large road bumps are more easily absorbed, creating a flatter ride, while vibrations from the road are supressed and engine resonance is reduced.

 

Honda’s all-encompassing approach to noise, vibrations and harshness (NVH) management also extends to reducing sound pressure change when starting the engine from EV mode and suppressing engine noise at higher speeds to reduce the transmission of vibrations caused by revving up the engine. This extends to increasing the overall stiffness of the roof, to reduce noise resonating from engine vibrations. Engineers also worked to reduce low-frequency road noise caused by road surface changes, further improving the cabin ambience for a more relaxing drive, especially in EV mode.

 

The thickness of the dash lower panel, which plays a key role in separating the engine and motor noise from the interior, has been increased from 0.8t to 1.4t, resulting in a significant improvement in both vibration and noise transmission. By using a single piece of plastic and an increased number of fixing points, vibration resistance is improved, while additional noise insulating materials are optimally placed in key areas including the dashboard top, bonnet, door linings, console and inner fender.

 

By repeatedly tuning and testing every element that directly impacts on the driving experience Honda has given the HR-V a new dynamic character that compliments the car’s contemporary design and superior levels of interior comfort and space.

The all-new HR-V offers a highly compelling infotainment package, combining intuitive technology with an expanded range of connectivity services that enhance comfort, convenience and safety.

 

The simple-to-use nine-inch touchscreen interface is designed to minimise driver distraction; operation time for the most regularly used controls is more than halved compared with the previous model, providing a safer and more ergonomic experience. The system interface is navigated using familiar smartphone-style usability, with swipe controls to scroll through pages and lists. The display can be configured to suit any usage requirements, incorporating customisable shortcuts to frequently used functions and audio sources.

 

The comprehensive suite of in-built apps can be supplemented by smartphone mirroring, enabled by wireless Apple CarPlay (through WiFi or cable) and Android Auto (cable). Owners also have a WiFi subscription option, to enable
all occupants to benefit from access to the internet while in the car.

 

Connected services

Available for all HR-V owners, the My Honda+ platform is being comprehensively revised following consumer feedback, enhancing the user experience and improving app response times. In addition, Honda has adopted a ‘Connectivity-as-a-Service’ approach with over-the-air (OTA) updates, to ensure additional features can be shared more quickly and easily. Family and friends can also enjoy the benefits of My Honda+ when their details are added on the app.

 

Honda Motor Europe's Head of New Business, Tom Cosens said: “Connectivity-as-a-Service is at the heart of our commitment to ensure all our future hybrid and electric vehicle customers benefit from outstanding levels of connectivity. Through a range of subscription-based services and over-the-air updates, we are putting Honda customers fully in control of their car ownership experience and integrating mobility more seamlessly with their lifestyles.”

Two of the optional packages: ‘Safety and Journey’ and ‘Digital Key’ are complementary for the first year of ownership.

 

The expanded range of connectivity features includes a virtual dashboard, remote vehicle locking and unlocking, access to current vehicle data and health-check history, subscription details, as well as servicing reminders, and online booking of service maintenance appointments coming soon.

 

The Safety and Journey package permits customers to send planned routes to their satellite navigation system remotely, and store and share journey history. It also allows users to locate the car with ease by viewing its location in the My Honda+ app. In case of emergency, Honda's Digital Roadside Assistance is activated at the press of a button, with the car’s location is automatically shared with the assistance provider. For additional peace of mind and security, owners can be alerted if the car is moved out of a predetermined ‘geofenced’ area.

 

Operated from a smartphone, the new Digital Key adds convenience for owners and can even be shared with friends and family. It can remotely lock and unlock doors, turn the power on, and operate the windows, as well as receive status notifications about the vehicle. The Digital Key uses secure Bluetooth technology (Android and iOS).

 

All of Honda’s connected services are underpinned by the robust and secure Honda Global Server and the Honda European Telematics platform. The services will be available across 17 European markets and in 13 languages.

    Comprehensive suite of active and passive safety systems as standard
    Honda SENSING technology includes new wider angle high-definition camera
    Hill Descent Control available for the first time in Europe operates from just three km/h

 

The all-new HR-V comes with a wide range of safety measures, to ensure that all occupants are offered the highest levels of protection. Auto High-Beam and Blind Spot Information are standard across the entire range, whilst Advance models add Cross Traffic Monitor, and the range topping Advance Style grade further adds LED Active Cornering Lights.

 

At the centre of the system is a new, wider-angle higher definition camera, which replaces the multi-purpose camera and sensor set-up of the previous-generation HR-V. The performance of the monocular camera is also improved further from the system that was recently introduced in the current generation Jazz. Recognition performance has increased through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for image processing. For example, the Collision Mitigating Brake System (CMBS) now detects motorcycles in front of the vehicle to mitigate the outcome in the event of an unavoidable collision.

 

The camera recognises a more comprehensive range of road surface and traffic characteristics, while vehicles in front or white lines are detected with much higher accuracy, improving acceleration response when the vehicle in front has moved out of sight or during an overtaking manoeuvre. This includes detecting if the vehicle approaches the outer edge of a pavement (into a kerb, grass or gravel border), an oncoming vehicle, or drifting into another lane without indicating and road signs. Furthermore, the system estimates the gradient of the road, improving the ability to maintain speed while descending. The camera is also now able to eliminate fogging for a constantly clear field of view, whilst rearward detection distance has been increased from 3m to 25m for greater confidence and increased safety.

 

As with all new Honda models, the all-new HR-V is equipped with Honda SENSINGTM, which includes a comprehensive range of class-leading safety technologies and driver aids, designed to make driving both easier and safer. 

 

Enhanced Honda SENSING active safety technology offers a broad range of driver assistance features and driver aids as standard, thanks in part to a new wider angle high-definition front camera that enhances the field of vision and night-time operation, increasing safety in a broader range of real-world situations.

 

The enhanced Honda SENSING suite of technologies includes:

    Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), enabled by the front wide-view camera is enhanced with improved night-time operation to also detect pedestrians when there is no street lighting. The revised system also offers greater recognition of cyclists and is also capable of applying the brakes when the HR-V cuts across or turns into the path of a car
    Adaptive Cruise Control manages the gap to the car in front automatically allowing the HR-V to follow traffic at low speeds, such as in congestion. The system also features ‘Low Speed Follow’ and revised acceleration timings after lane changes and overtaking
    Low Speed Brake System uses sonar sensors at either end of the car to detect if there is danger of a potential collision with a wall or other obstacle during normal driving or when the accelerator is depressed with too much force
    Lane Keep Assist operation extended to lower speed, from 72 and 180km/h urban and rural roads – as well as multi-lane highways – for increased safety in more situations
    Enhanced Road Departure Mitigation System assists the driver to not stray from the road, detecting lines, grass or gravel as a boundary
    Traffic Sign Recognition System uses the front wide-view camera to detect road signs whenever the vehicle is moving forward. The system automatically recognises and displays the signs via the seven-inch LCD display once the vehicle has passed the sign. The system is designed to detect circular road signs displaying speed limits and other information. Two road signs can be displayed at any one time – the right side of the display only shows speed limit signs while the left shows ‘No Passing’ signs and speed limits with additional information, such as weather conditions, for example
    Intelligent Speed Limiter recognises traffic speed signs and sets the speed limit. If the traffic sign shows a slower speed compared to the actual vehicle speed, an indicator on the display flashes with an alarm sound and the system gradually decreases the vehicle speed
    Front & Rear Collision Mitigation Throttle Control can detect excessive input in to the throttle pedal, when the vehicle is either stationary or at low speeds, providing visual and audible warnings, whilst also limiting power to prevent sudden forward or backward motion in to surrounding objects.

 

The driver can decide how much driver assistance information is displayed on the seven-inch TFT liquid crystal display (LCD) instrument panel.

 

Passive safety engineered into the HR-V structure

Every HR-V incorporates Honda's proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure technology that forms the foundation for excellent passive safety performance, enhancing occupant crash protection.

 

A network of connected structural elements distributes crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle, reducing the forces transferred to the passenger compartment. ACE™ not only protects the car and its passengers by dispersing the collision energy, it reduces the collision energy transferred to the other vehicle too. Its safety performance helps protect occupants from collisions with large and small vehicles alike.

 

For pedestrian protection, Honda has adapted the clearance under the bonnet hood and the efficiency of shock absorption. Regarding the impact to the legs of pedestrians, Honda has also revised the load distribution characteristics of the bumper to achieve top-level pedestrian protection without compromising styling.

 

Passive safety is as important to Honda as active safety to protect occupants in the event of an accident. HR-V owners and occupants are protected by multiple airbags, with the car also fitted with whiplash-mitigating front seats as an additional safety precaution.

Honda Unveils the World Premiere of Advanced Future Safety Technologies toward the Realization of its Goal for Zero Traffic Collision Fatalities by 2050

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today held the world premiere of advanced future safety technologies Honda is currently developing for the realization of a society where everyone sharing the road will be liberated from the risk of traffic collisions and enjoy freedom of mobility with total peace of mind.

Honda will strive to attain its goal of realizing “zero traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles globally by 2050” utilizing two key technologies. One is the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI)-powered “Intelligent Driver-Assistive Technology” providing assistance that is suited to the ability and situation of each individual to reduce driving errors and risks, helping the driver achieve safe and sound driving. The other is the “Safe and Sound Network Technology” which connects all road users, both people and mobility products, through telecommunications, making it possible to predict potential risks and help people avoid such risks before collisions actually occur.

    Realization of “zero traffic collision fatalities by 2050”

Striving for a collision-free society for everyone sharing the road, represented by the global safety slogan “Safety for Everyone,” Honda has been pursuing the research and development of safety technologies from the perspective of both hardware and software.

For the pursuit of a collision-free society, Honda will expand the introduction of Honda SENSING 360, a recently announced omnidirectional safety and driver-assistive system, to all models to go on sale in all major markets by 2030. Moreover, Honda will continue working to expand application of a motorcycle detection function and further enhance functions of its ADAS (advanced driver-assistance system).

Furthermore, Honda also will continue to make progress in expanding application of motorcycle safety technologies and offering of safety education technologies (Honda Safety EdTech). Through these initiatives, Honda will strive to reduce global traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles by half*1 by 2030.

Beyond that, Honda will strive to realize its ambitious goal of “zero traffic collision fatalities by 2050” through establishment of future safety technologies at the earliest possible timing.

    1) Safety suited to each individual:

Aiming for “zero human error” in driving with the “Intelligent Driver-Assistive Technology”

    Honda has unraveled the factors behind human errors through its original fMRI*2-based study of the human brain and analysis of risk-taking behaviors.
    The system presumes predictors of driving errors based on information obtained through a driver monitoring camera and pattern of the driving operations.
    This technology is being developed to enable each individual driver to mitigate driving errors and enjoy mobility without any sense of anxiety.
    Honda will strive for establishment of underlying technologies during the first half of the 2020s, with practical application during the second half of the 2020s.

With the goal to unravel underlying causes of driving errors that make the driver feel anxious, Honda has been conducting research and development of “technologies to understand people” with an original method that utilizes fMRI*2.

In addition to technologies to understand human behavior and conditions, which Honda has amassed to date, the “Intelligent Driver-Assistive Technology” unveiled today, the world’s first such technology, uses ADAS sensors and cameras to recognize potential risks in the vehicle’s surroundings, which enables AI to detect driving risks. At the same time, AI will determine optimal driving behavior on a real-time basis and offer assistance suited to the cognitive state and traffic situations of each individual driver.

With the next-generation driver-assistive functions currently under research and development, Honda will strive to offer the new value of “error-free” safety and peace of mind which are suited to the driving behavior and situation of each individual driver and keep them away from any potential risks.

From here onward, Honda will further advance the “Intelligent Driver-Assistive Technology” unveiled today and continue making progress in development with the goal to establish underlying technologies during the first half of the 2020s, then launch practical applications during the second half of the 2020s.

With this technology, Honda will advance the conventional driver assist which helps the driver avoid risk while it is occurring to the AI-powered driver assist which will keep the driver away from the risks and strive to completely eliminate human errors, which are the cause of over 90% of traffic collisions*3.

    2) Safe coexistence of all road users:

Establishment of the “Safe and Sound Network Technology” which connects all road users through telecommunication

    System understands/recognizes the situation and surrounding environment of each driver and road user
    Through the communication network, information about potential risks in the traffic environment will be aggregated in the server, and risks are predicted using the reproduction of the traffic environment in the virtual space.
    System derives the most appropriate support information, communicates it to each road user and encourages them to take actions to avoid potential risk before it actually happens.
    Honda will accelerate industrywide and public-private collaboration with an aim to standardize the technology in the second half of the 2020s.

To realize a “collision-free” mobility society for all road users, Honda is striving to realize a “cooperative safety society” where utilization of telecommunication technologies will enable everyone sharing the road to be connected and coexist.

With the ‘Safe and Sound Techonlogy,” information about potential risks in the traffic environment, which are detected based on information obtained from roadside cameras, on-board cameras and smartphones, will be aggregated in the server to reproduce that traffic environment in the virtual space. In that virtual space, in consideration of the conditions and characteristics of each individual road user, the system predicts/simulates the behaviors of road users at high risk of a collision. Then, the system derives the most appropriate support information to help the road users avoid risks.

Such support information will be communicated intuitively to automobile drivers, motorcycle riders and pedestrians through “cooperative risk HMI (human-machine interface),” which will make it possible for the system to encourage road users to take action to avoid a collision before it happens.

Aiming for real-world implementation of this technology after 2030, Honda will build the system and complete verification of effectiveness in the first half of the 2020s, then accelerate industrywide and public-private collaboration with an aim to standardize the technology in the second half of the 2020s.

Honda has introduced a range of five new accessory packs for the all-new HR-V e:HEV, offering greater personalisation options to suit every lifestyle. Available across Europe from February 2022, the next generation of the brand’s popular compact SUV can be specified with a range of interior and exterior design enhancements that build on its class-leading space, comfort and usability.

To enhance the athletic appeal of the HR-V, customers can opt for the Sport Pack. This creates a distinguished look, with the front grille and tailgate spoiler extension finished in Berlina Black and the front sport bumper, rear sport decoration and side lower decorations finished in body-colour with chrome detailing.

The Obscura Black Pack elevates the vehicle’s sporty and expressive character by applying Berlina Black and body-coloured finishes to the front grille, fog lamp surrounds, door mirror covers and tailgate spoiler extension.

Customers can also enhance the premium character of their HR-V with the Ilmenite Titanium Exterior Pack, which offers stylish titanium accents to the fog light surrounds, door mirror covers and tailgate decorations.

 The personalisation options continue inside the new HR-V. The Ilmenite Titanium Interior Pack applies a classy titanium finish to the steering wheel, gear shift surround and door switch panels. The Leather Upholstery upgrade sees the front and rear seats and central armrest covered in a combination of classic grain leather – in either Dark Brown or Midnight Black - and smooth Alston® fabric for a high quality, durable, premium finish.

Perfectly suited to those who frequently transport luggage or specialised equipment, the Cargo Pack is designed to further enhance the usability of the HR-V. A boot tray with dividers helps keep everything in its place, while mud and grime can be kept at bay thanks to the durable waterproof flooring. Hard-wearing stainless steel boot sill protectors offer added defence against scuffs. Also included in this pack is the tailgate illumination, illuminating not only the boot, but also the surface behind your car.

Customers looking for an all-round pack to help enhance their busy lives can select the Active Lifestyle Pack. Door sill trims, front and rear mud flaps and a foldable boot mat help protect against scuffs and dirt. And inside, occupants can make the most of the HR-V’s connected experience with an integrated wireless charger for mobile phones.

The accessory packs are designed to follow the overall development ethos of the HR-V, offering new levels of customisation, and addressing the demands of modern car ownership.

Honda has unveiled the all-new Civic e:HEV, the 11th generation of its iconic global compact car. Building on 50 years of heritage, the all-new hybrid Civic blends strong performance and efficiency with improved levels of interior comfort, visual appeal and overall usability. Featuring Honda’s proven e:HEV powertrain technology as standard, the all-new Civic completes the brand’s mission to electrify all its mainstream European models by the end of 2022.

'Exhilarating’ design approach

In its latest guise, the Civic embodies a new, progressive ‘exhilarating‘ approach to design. Coupled with Honda’s ‘Man-Maximum, Machine-Minimum’ (M/M) development principle, this joint approach has shaped all aspects of the Civic’s design and development.

The all-new Civic features a sleek and sporty silhouette, which has been achieved through lowering the bonnet line 25mm over the previous generation, whilst the glass area has been increased to create a light and airy interior. To exude a refined, premium feeling, cleaner, noiseless, surfacing has been applied, with more defined belt and feature lines highlighting key details.

The lower feature line enhances the assured stature of the vehicle, as well as giving improved visibility from the rear seats. In comparison to the previous generation Civic, the base of the A-pillar has been positioned further back to align with the centre of the front wheels, this gives the car a more balanced proportion in profile as well as a wider, more assured stance from all angles. The highest point of the roofline has been placed further forward than the previous Civic, with a gentle slope to the tailgate creating a sleek, fast-back style look.

This sleeker body profile makes tyres appear larger and in combination with the wider track and tighter wheel-arch hemming, achieves a sporty, ground-hugging stance. Despite taking a new approach to aesthetics, the famed practicality and human centric thinking of the Civic family remains a key characteristic. For example, the side mirrors are now attached directly to the front doors, helping reduce unnecessary blind spots and supporting the safety of drivers and passengers.

The Civic is famed for being the do-it-all hatchback and the 11th generation is no exception, providing more space and usability than ever before. The 35mm longer wheelbase has allowed designers to create a more expansive and comfortable cabin space as well as improving dynamic performance and straight-line stability. The construction of the tailgate is now resin, a first for Civic. Developed using new manufacturing technology, the weight has been reduced by 20% compared with the previous Civic, making it easier to open and close. Additionally, the supporting hinges have been moved outwards, achieving a cleaner roofline and further contributing to the new sleeker rear design.

Once inside the Civic, the horizontal style of the dashboard emphasises the width of the cabin which, when combined with a wider field of vision gives a truly airy and open feeling. The interior also benefits from new tactile, high-quality materials throughout, including a striking metal honeycomb-pattern air vent detail running the width of the dashboard. On   Advance grade the drivers’ display now features a 10.2-inch HD colour LCD panel for improved visibility.

The new Civic offers an intuitive infotainment package. The size of the central touchscreen has been increased to nine inches and has been moved upwards to minimise up-and-down eye movement. The system comes complete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility to keep occupants connected whilst on the move.

In addition, to further enhance occupant experience, the Elegance and Sport grades feature eight speakers whilst the Advance grade features 12 premium BOSE speakers for a concert like audio experience.

Advanced and efficient e:HEV powertrain

Honda’s proven e:HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) powertrain technology is offered as standard and its application in the Civic, sees the deployment of a new 72-cell lithium-ion battery and two compact, yet powerful electric motors paired with a newly developed 2.0-litre direct-injection, Atkinson-cycle engine. Combined, the powertrain delivers a maximum motor output of 135kW and 315Nm of torque. The latest iteration of the internal combustion engine has several new elements within its architecture to help achieve a thermal efficiency of 41%, one of the highest figures within the automotive industry for a production road car.

The two powerful electric motors work together to provide the primary drive force for the all-new Civic. The engine is controlled by a new, compact Power Control unit which now sits under the bonnet with the rest of the powertrain. Sitting under the rear seats is the latest version of our Intelligent Power Unit and whilst smaller and lighter, it benefits from an increased energy density. This system delivers a feeling of instant torque and powerful acceleration whilst still offering outstanding efficiency.

This advanced powertrain is capable of shifting seamlessly between EV, Hybrid and Engine drive with no input from the driver. Four drive modes – Eco, Normal, Sport and a new Individual mode, which allows separate control of the engine, transmission and cluster gauge display, can be selected by the driver to tailor the vehicle response as required.

Central to the e:HEV system is the fixed gear transmission, which has been designed to minimise mechanical friction and is controlled by an intelligent power control unit, which optimises the vehicle to each driving situation. The all-new Civic is targeted to achieve CO2 emissions of less than 110 grams per km which is less than 5 l/100km in WLTP testing.

Careful attention has also been paid to the drivetrain and noise management to create a tranquil, calming cabin environment, whilst enhancing the overall vehicle driveability; resulting in a smooth, linear feel during acceleration.

This refined powertrain is paired with strong, reassuring handling and straight-line stability; the cornerstones of the Civic model throughout its history. The 11th generation Civic features a 35mm longer wheelbase and wider rear track over its predecessor to help deliver improved straight-line and cornering performance, while new low friction ball joints and revised front damper enhance the dynamic feel. The new model will also be the first Civic to adopt a newly designed structure for the body stabilising front seats, providing greater stabilisation and comfort for occupants.

Honda SENSING

The all-new Civic also features Honda’s expanded SENSING suite of advanced safety features and driver aids. A new 100-degree front wide-view camera and enhanced recognition technology improve the Civic’s capacity to identify pedestrians, road lines, boundaries, other vehicles including motorcycles and cyclists. For the first time, the all-new Civic is equipped with sonar sensors – four at the front and four at the rear. In addition to improved Collision Mitigation Braking System, Lane Keep Assist and i-ACC technology, Low Speed Braking Control, Blind Spot Information, Cross Traffic Monitor and Traffic Jam Assist are all new additions to the Civic’s comprehensive active safety offering.

In addition to the new active safety technology, new structural components have also been incorporated to meet Euro NCAP’s stringent safety standards, these include; additional door beams that improve side collision performance; front bumper beam safety plates that absorb impact energy to reduce leg and knee damage; a total of 11 airbags including side airbags for the rear seats; knee airbags for the front seats to reduce occupant injury during front impact; and a front centre airbag for the driver seat to prevent a collision between the driver and front passenger during side impact.

Combining a refined, clean exterior design, a premium light and airy interior, advanced safety and convenience technologies and a perfect blend of economy and performance, the all-new Civic e:HEV is the most dynamic, efficient and safest Civic yet.

Honda’s all-new HR-V e:HEV compact SUV, NT1100 tourer motorcycle, ADV350 ‘adventure’ scooter and EU32i generator have all secured the Red Dot Award: ‘Product Design 2022’ – a first time for Honda to receive the award cross all product ranges, Motorcycle, Automobile and Power Products. This highly coveted distinction is only bestowed upon products that excel in design quality and innovation.

The HR-V’s contemporary style echoes the ‘noiseless’, elegant design direction of other recent Honda models, which has been recognised through a series of international award wins over recent years. In the 2021 Red Dot competition, the Jazz e:HEV, Jazz Crosstar e:HEV and Forza 750 maxi-scooter all won in the Product Design category, while the Honda e secured the Best of the Best award the previous year. It was recognised alongside the Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP super sports motorcycle, which became the first Honda motorcycle to win a Red Dot award.

The Red Dot Winner Label has become established internationally as one of the most sought-after marks of quality for product design. The annual awards are decided by a panel of 50 international experts who test, evaluate and discuss each entry, with judging criteria reappraised and adapted each year to reflect the latest technical, social, economic and ecological requirements.

“We are pleased to receive a Red Dot Product Design Award in all Honda product ranges, Motorcycle, Automobile and Power Products for the first time,” said Toshinobu Minami, Chief Operating Officer, Design Center, Honda R&D Co. Ltd., “We believe this is a result of realising Honda's desire to 'serve people with technology, ideas and design through our products', which has been a key principle since the company's foundation. When designing and developing the latest generation HR-V, Honda engineers completely reimagined the popular compact-SUV from the ground up. Honda’s research found that modern consumers choose products not only on the basis of competent performance or appealing aesthetics, but also on how it integrates with their lives and whether the product fulfils their individual requirements.

As a result, the new-generation HR-V has a contemporary coupe-SUV body that achieves a desirable combination of premium and dynamic design and exceptional space efficiency. Both the interior and exterior embody Honda’s new simple, clean, modern design philosophy already seen in recent new models, and successfully extends the brand's reputation for quality, functionality and practicality.

Unveiled in October 2021, the NT1100 introduced a New Touring Era of motorcycling. A comfortable, agile and, most importantly, supremely enjoyable motorcycle, the NT1100’s styling drew on Honda’s rich heritage of tourers, aiming to attract both established riders and a new generation looking for the traditional tourer values of comfort and practicality without an overt ‘adventure’ look and feel.

It was drawn at Honda’s Italian R&D centre in Rome by the pen of Maurizio Carbonara (also responsible for Honda’s hugely popular CRF1100L Africa Twin and X-ADV) with the guiding principle of ‘proactive comfort’. As such, its clean, elegant lines are complemented by a feeling of lightness thanks to its raised height and horizontal character lines, that hint strongly at a new level of riding enjoyment for a touring-focussed motorcycle.

Honda’s other two-wheeled award winner, the ADV350 ‘adventure scooter’, draws faithfully on the look and feel of the 750cc X-ADV – which was quickly dubbed the ‘first two-wheeled SUV’ on its introduction in 2017 thanks to its rugged, angular design lines, multiple surfaces, high ground clearance, long travel suspension and scooter-like practicality. The ADV350 brings this innovative look to the mid-capacity scooter market under the banner of ‘New Urban Adventure’. Its off-road oriented appearance is matched with the genuine ability to deal with the roughest of tarmac thanks to its unique-in-class genuine motorcycle suspension. 

Completing the award-winning line-up is the recently launched EU32i generator, which offers immense power in a consumer-friendly, smartly designed package. It features a world-first integration of a high-output engine into a portable, fuel-injected generator, boasting an impressive 3,200 watts of power and continuous performance that was previously only found in cars and marine outboard engines. It even comes with a dedicated smartphone app and with Bluetooth connectivity, it enables users to monitor the status of the generator and control it remotely.

Honda’s recent triumphs in the automobile section of the Red Dot awards builds on a long history of success in the programme, including the Honda S2000 in 2001, Civic in 2006 and European Accord Tourer in 2008.

    Honda Civic Type R sets new front-wheel drive lap record at Suzuka Circuit
    Latest model follows long tradition of high-performance Hondas inspired by the spirit of racing
    All-new Civic Type R set for European launch in 2022

Honda’s next-generation Civic Type R has set a new lap record for a front-wheel drive car at the world-famous Suzuka Circuit in Japan. It lapped the 5.8km track in 2 minutes 23.120 seconds*, 0.873 seconds faster than its predecessor, the stripped back 2021 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition.

The new benchmark time was set during the new model’s final development evaluation on 15 March 2022. The all-new Civic Type R is the latest performance vehicle to prove itself on the iconic Suzuka International Racing Course, famous for its high-speed chicanes and challenging corners.  The track, often described as one of the world’s greatest circuits, has been a test bed for performance Hondas since 1962 and has been home to the Japanese Formula 1 Grand Prix for all but two years since 1987.

The previous front-wheel drive lap record at Suzuka – 2 minutes 23.993 seconds – was set by a Civic Type R Limited Edition development car in February 2020. Before this, Honda's tenth generation Civic Type R GT broke the front-wheel drive lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2017 with a lap time of 7 minutes 43.8 seconds. A production specification Civic Type R GT went on to break front-wheel drive production car records at five legendary European racetracks.

Further information about the all-new Civic Type R will be shared ahead of its launch later in 2022.
