Press Kit: 25 YEARS OF HONDA HYBRIDS
https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/481251/press-kit-25-years-of-honda-hybrids
1. HISTORY OF HONDA HYBRID TECHNOLOGY
Honda is now in its fourth decade of producing hybrid vehicles, having introduced the first petrol-electric hybrid car to Europe with its revolutionary Insight in 1999.
Since then, the brand’s engineers have spent the past 25 years perfecting this type of powertrain, the fruits of which can be seen in the current fully electrified mainstream model range – namely the Jazz, Civic, HR-V, ZR-V, and CR-V which all feature the two-motor e:HEV powertrain.
Driven by a sense of responsibility to advance vehicle efficiency for societal benefit and for technical innovation, whilst also continuing to deliver the “joy of driving” to its customers, Honda has always been at the forefront of hybrid technology.
From the launch of the first generation Civic in 1972, Honda was primarily focused on petrol engines and possessed extensive expertise in this area, with its lean burn combustion process significantly lowering harmful emissions. As environmental awareness increased in the late 80s and early 90s, Honda embarked upon research into the application of petrol-electric hybrid technology, with the goal to create the most efficient vehicle in the world.
Honda’s first production hybrid vehicle was the Insight, launched in 1999. Fitted with a unique parallel hybrid Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system, this vehicle could deliver a combined fuel consumption of 3.4l/100km (83.1mpg; NEDC cycle). Over the past 25 years, Honda has further refined its technologies, developing various hybrid architectures for different applications. In addition to IMA, these include the two-motor intelligent Multi Mode Drive (i-MMD) system that is fitted across Honda’s current European e:HEV range, and the ultimate three-motor Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system in the NSX.
The ultimate realisation of Honda’s hybrid technologies has been seen on the track. The brand returned to Formula 1 as an engine supplier in 2015, at the start of the turbo hybrid era. It steadily refined its power unit, overcoming many challenges to clinch the world driver’s championship in 2021 with Max Verstappen and Oracle Red Bull Racing, the first time it had powered a title winner in the sport since 1991. Honda have since provided power units to the team in 2022 and 2023, years in which they have clinched both drivers and constructors championships.
Today, Honda’s latest e:HEV hybrids are a testament to 25-years of research and development, continuing the legacy of those models that have come before – to deliver impressive performance and responsiveness, while maintaining smooth power delivery and outstanding efficiency without compromising on the “joy of driving”.

2. HONDA INSIGHT (1999)
As the first ever petrol-electric hybrid car to be launched in Europe, the Honda Insight is a true pioneer. Featuring a state-of-the-art powertrain, incredibly low kerb weight and an exceptional aerodynamic design, the sleek two-seater coupe was one of the most fuel-efficient models in the world, with a combined consumption figure of 3.4l/100km (83.1mpg).
Powering this cutting-edge coupe was Honda’s trend-setting Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid powertrain that gave the car class-leading fuel-efficiency and incredibly low emissions.
Housed in a light and strong aluminium body designed to deliver one of the lowest drag coefficients of any production car, it slipped through the air with minimal wind resistance.
At the heart of the Insight was one of the lightest 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engines ever made, using advanced lean burn technology, low friction components and lightweight materials.
Connected directly to the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine (ICE) and driving through a five-speed manual gearbox, was an ultra-thin (60mm) DC-brushless motor. This was powered by a 144V nickel metal-hydride (Ni-MH) battery (weighing just 20kg) mounted under the boot floor.
When accelerating, the electric motor boosted engine performance to the level of an equivalent 1.5-litre petrol engine, while under deceleration it acted as a generator to recharge the batteries.
Furthermore, the motor also provided a stop-start system, cutting the engine when the Insight came to a halt and automatically restarting it when first gear was engaged.
Low aerodynamic drag was a priority with the design of the Insight, which featured a streamlined nose, a low height and long tapered roof, narrow rear track, rear wheel skirts and a flat underside – giving the Insight an aerodynamic drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0.25.
Honda pioneered the use of aluminium body construction with the original NSX sports car (1990), and it used the lessons it learned there on the Insight. Featuring a combination of extruded, stamped and die cast aluminium components, it weighed 40 percent less than a comparable steel body.
Aluminium was also used for the outer panels, except for the front wings and rear wheel skirts which were made from recyclable plastic composite. Amounting to a total kerb weight of 835kg (852kg including air-conditioning).
When it was revealed in 1999, the Insight was one of the most advanced vehicles on the road, and during its development over 300 patents were registered - more than 60 on the engine and IMA system, plus over 120 each for the electronic Power Control Unit (PCU) and body construction.

3. HONDA CR-Z (2010)
Combining the advantages of a clean, efficient petrol electric hybrid powertrain with a stylish coupe body, the Honda CR-Z continued the brand’s pioneering tradition of delivering driving pleasure and class-leading efficiency when it launched in 2010.
With its compact dimensions, lightweight construction and aerodynamic design, the CR-Z followed in the revolutionary tracks of the original Insight.
Using lessons learned from the Insight and two generations of Civic Hybrid, the CR-Z featured an expertly evolved version of Honda’s advanced Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) petrol-electric powertrain that provided even stronger performance. It was also fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, which was a world first for a hybrid at that time.
The CR-Z also featured a 3-Mode Drive System, a unique feature that allowed the driver to choose between three driving modes (NORMAL, ECON and SPORT), each of which altered the responses of the throttle, steering, climate control and the level of assistance provided by the IMA system.
This carefully calibrated set-up allowed the driver to adapt the car's settings to enjoy their favourite road, maximise economy, or strike a balance between the two.
Power was provided by a 114PS 1.5-litre, 16-valve petrol engine that provided driver enjoyment with its enthusiastic engine note, willingness to rev and broad spread of torque, giving excellent fuel economy and great emphasis on driver enjoyment.
The internal combustion engine (ICE) also used Honda’s state-of-the-art i-VTEC system, which could alter the engine’s valve timing to reduce emissions and improve fuel consumption at low speeds, but increased power when using high revs.
Sandwiched between the ICE and six-speed gearbox was a 14PS electric motor, which delivered an impressive 78Nm at low to medium engine speeds for instant throttle response and the performance of a larger 1.8-litre unit.
The battery pack in the CR-Z was a 100.8-volt Nickel Metal Hydride unit mounted under the boot floor and provided an excellent balance between output, reliability, safety and cost.
The chassis was an important factor in the development of the CR-Z, with driver enjoyment being a core part of the design brief. Featuring a wide track, short wheelbase chassis for agile and responsive handling, it backed up its sporty coupe looks with engaging and entertaining handling.
Within its sleek design the CR-Z hinted at the legendary CRX coupe, with the split-level rear window and shallow sloping roof, combining them with complex curves and deeply scalloped panels. Inside, it featured a driver-focused dashboard with an eye-catching 3D instrument cluster, plus a practical 2+2 seating layout.

4. HONDA NSX (2016)
When it launched in 2016, the NSX was at the cutting-edge of Honda’s hybrid technology, thanks to its revolutionary Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system. This advanced hybrid system integrated both electric and traditional combustion power sources to provide superior dynamic performance.
The heart of the NSX's hybrid powertrain was a bespoke mid-mounted twin-turbocharged V6 engine, complemented by an all-new nine-speed dual-clutch transmission (9DCT) and a Direct Drive Motor, forming the rear power unit.
This setup was enhanced by a front Twin Motor Unit (TMU) with two electric motors that independently drove the left and right front wheels, ensuring nearly instantaneous acceleration and superior handling.
The power delivery system of the NSX ensured smooth integration of the electric and combustion power sources. The twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine, coupled with the electric motors, provided a total peak output of 581PS, while the 9DCT enhanced this with its ability to deliver seamless up and downshifts. The transmission could operate in automatic mode, selecting the most appropriate gear, or in manual mode using steering wheel-mounted paddles.
The NSX also featured Launch Mode Control, which, when activated, delivered a perfectly executed vehicle launch by utilising peak power from both the TMU and the twin-turbocharged V6 engine.
Braking in the NSX was managed by a next-generation system that integrated mechanical friction brakes with an electro-servo control and a regenerative braking system. This combination provided exceptional brake pedal response and predictable performance in nearly any driving condition. The regenerative braking system started working as soon as the throttle was released, maximising energy recovery and enhancing battery recharging during normal driving.
The NSX’s Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system used 'Direct Yaw Control' to utilise the instantaneous torque capabilities of the TMU, creating a direct yaw moment at any speed, whether under power or during off-throttle manoeuvres. This sophisticated control allowed for precise and immediate adjustments, improving stability and handling across various driving scenarios.
When accelerating, the three electric motors—the Direct Drive Motor and the front TMU—provided instantaneous torque response. During braking, the NSX combined the mechanical and regenerative braking systems, delivering powerful, fade-free performance while simultaneously charging the lithium-ion hybrid battery.
Cornering precision was significantly enhanced by the cooperative work of the TMU and the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system. The TMU dynamically vectored front-wheel torque to create a turning moment, with additional stability provided by the VSA and Agile Handling Assist (AHA). This coordination elevated driver confidence and vehicle performance, extracting more from the car than traditional systems.
Overall, Honda NSX’s hybrid technology not only pushed the boundaries of performance and handling but also emphasized efficiency and environmental sustainability. This integration of hybrid power in a supercar set a new benchmark for the automotive industry, combining the best of both worlds.

Honda Introduces Next-generation Technologies for Honda 0 Series Models at Honda 0 Tech Meeting 2024
Next-generation technologies introduced at the Honda 0 Tech Meeting
Thin and Light
With the “Thin” development approach, Honda will continue to value and realize the M/M (Man Maximum, Machine Minimum) concept in this EV era and strive to offer new value of EVs as a comfortable “space” featuring an original styling design with a low vehicle height and short overhangs.
With the “Light” development approach, Honda will strive to realize both sporty driving and the world’s top-class electric efficiency, which it has always been committed to doing in its car-making.
Newly developed dedicated EV platform
Adopting the 2.0 GPa grade hot stamping material (ultra-high strength steel plate), Honda developed a new EV platform to realize both thin and low-height styling, as well as the safety and peace of mind of the occupants. In addition, combined with the adoption of a thin battery pack and a newly developed compact e-Axle, the original Honda low-floor technology enables a low centre of gravity and low inertia by placing heavy components low and in the centre of the vehicle. This stabilizes vehicle behaviour and enables sporty driving.
Honda Introduces Next-generation Technologies for Honda 0 Series Models at Honda 0 Tech Meeting 2024
Newly developed compact e-Axle
The motor and inverter technologies Honda has amassed through the development of hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) will be utilized in EVs to realize a compact and highly efficient e-Axle. The inverter was downsized by approximately 40%*1, which made it possible to achieve a horizontal layout package where the inverter is placed side by side with the motor, something that has been difficult to achieve in the past. With this compact e-Axle, the low-height styling and maximizing of cabin space can be achieved at the same time.
Honda Introduces Next-generation Technologies for Honda 0 Series Models at Honda 0 Tech Meeting 2024
Thin battery pack
The IPU (battery) case will be made approximately 6% thinner*1 through the adoption of mega casting and 3D friction stir welding (FSW) technology. In addition, by adopting a body structure which is designed to disperse the impact of a collision, the extra space needed to protect the battery will be reduced, which will result in a larger area available for mounting a battery. With these technologies, a lighter and thinner battery pack will be installed with maximum efficiency, contributing to an extension of the range for Honda 0 Series models.
Furthermore, Honda is striving to limit the degradation of battery capacity (range) to less than 10% after 10 years of use by applying battery degradation diagnosis and prediction technology that utilizes driving data from 5 million Honda vehicles, mostly HEVs.
Honda Introduces Next-generation Technologies for Honda 0 Series Models at Honda 0 Tech Meeting 2024
Active aerodynamic system
Honda has developed an active aerodynamic system that will automatically activate the front aero deflector according to the vehicle speed and other factors. The front aero deflector is installed under the floor to reduce air resistance for all vehicle body types including the ones with high vehicle height or with styling that is susceptible to air resistance, such as SUVs. In addition to reducing driving energy without compromising daily usability, this system will enable the vehicle to demonstrate high downforce performance and contribute to an increase in straight-line stability of the vehicle.
New body rigidity management to realize high driving stability and light weight
A sporty and exhilarating driving experience will be achieved by adopting a new steering stability index, which provides the ability to flex the vehicle body to control load on each tyre during cornering. The simplified body structure also contributes to an overall vehicle weight reduction of approximately 100kg (220 pounds) compared to initial Honda EVs.
Honda Introduces Next-generation Technologies for Honda 0 Series Models at Honda 0 Tech Meeting 2024
Production technologies to make “Thin” and “Light” possible
Advancement of the Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) case production technologies
A 6,000-ton class mega casting (high-pressure, high-precision casting) machine will be adopted to the IPU (battery) case production line, which will significantly reduce the number of parts from more than 60 to 5. In addition, by joining a dedicated IPU case part, which is different for each EV model size, and a common part with FSW technology, a variety of IPU cases can be produced efficiently. This will improve overall production efficiency and limit the required capital investment. Honda will continue to advance these production technologies, including the expansion of the application to large aluminum casting body frame parts in the future.
Advancement of technologies to realize a lighter vehicle body
The application of the world's first*2 CDC joining technology*3 will enable the

HONDA CREATES WORLD’S ‘SILVERIEST’ CIVIC TO CELEBRATE 25 YEARS OF ITS PIONEERING HYBRID TECHNOLOGY
https://hondanews.eu/eu/en/cars/media/pressreleases/503737/honda-creates-worlds-silveriest-civic-to-celebrate-25-years-of-its-pioneering-hybrid-technology
Honda has sprayed a Civic e:HEV in the world’s most silver paint
The one-off silver anniversary model marks 25 years of Honda hybrid
‘Silveriest’ paint created by artist Stuart Semple using real silver
The Honda Insight started Honda’s hybrid journey back in 1999
The extensive evolution of Honda’s hybrid technology is showcased in 2024 with its fully electrified mainstream model range
Honda has revealed a one-of-a-kind Civic e:HEV sprayed in the world’s most silver paint to celebrate 25 years since the brand launched Europe’s first ever hybrid model – the Insight – in September 1999.
To celebrate its hybrid silver jubilee, Honda painted the Civic in a specially made batch of unique silver paint created by renowned artist and colour champion, Stuart Semple. Inventor of the world’s Silveriest Silver, alongside the Pinkest Pink, Goldest Gold and Blackest Black, he supplied the paint for the one-off anniversary edition through his studio, Culture Hustle.
With a passion for working with only the best materials, Stuart creates his paint using 64% real silver flakes and pigments blended in an acrylic suspension. The paint can be smoothly applied to all surfaces and gives the appearance of solid gold or silver metals, enabling artists to create work that is a real representation of these colours.
Once the paint had been mixed, it was handed to the custom fabrication specialists at The Syrup Room in Bournemouth UK, to apply to the Civic. Over three days, its team of expert sprayers cleaned and prepared the car’s bodywork in carefully climate-controlled conditions before administering multiple layers of specialist protective and removable paint. Finally, high precision spraying equipment was used to apply the final coats of Silveriest Silver to create the unique celebratory Civic.
Nik Pearson, Honda Motor Europe, said: “Honda’s hybrid know-how is unmatched in the industry. In 1999 we set about building the world’s most fuel-efficient car, the revolutionary Insight, which was the first petrol-electric hybrid car in Europe. Today we offer a fully electrified model range, the majority of which feature our innovative e:HEV powertrain. It’s for these reasons we’ve marked 25 years of hybrid technology with the ultimate silver anniversary gift, the Silveriest Civic. And doesn’t it look fantastic.”
Honda is now in its fourth calendar decade of producing hybrid vehicles, with the brand’s engineers having spent the past quarter of a century perfecting this type of powertrain, the fruits of which can be seen in the current fully electrified mainstream model range.
About the Civic e:HEV and Honda’s pioneering hybrid technology
Launched in 2022, the heart of the latest Civic's hybrid system is the e:HEV powertrain, which includes a 2.0-litre direct-injection Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, two compact yet powerful electric motors, a power-dense lithium-ion battery, a Power Control Unit, and an Intelligent Power Unit.
Alongside the hybrid Jazz, HR-V, ZR-V, and CR-V, the 11th generation Civic is part of Honda’s fully electrified mainstream model range, perfectly allying impressive performance and responsiveness alongside smooth power delivery and outstanding efficiency – all without compromising on the ‘joy of driving’.
Honda’s hybrid story continues to have a bright future, with the iconic Prelude nameplate set to return in the coming years with a petrol-electric powertrain. It promises to deliver the perfect balance of exhilarating driving pleasure and outstanding efficiency, alongside trademark style and sophistication – another example of Honda bringing the ‘joy of driving’ to customers across Europe.
The ultimate realisation of Honda’s hybrid technologies has also been seen on the track, following the brand’s return to Formula 1 as an engine supplier in 2015, at the start of the turbo hybrid era. It has since steadily refined its power unit, overcoming many challenges to clinch the world drivers’ championship in 2021 with Max Verstappen and Oracle Red Bull Racing. Honda continued to supply power units to the team in 2022 and 2023 – years in which they consecutively clinched both the drivers’ and constructors’ world championships.

The company also introduced its original vehicle operating system (OS), the ASIMO OS, to be applied to its global EV series.
■ Honda 0 Saloon
By further advancing the concept model introduced last year at CES 2024, the Honda 0 Saloon prototype was developed in preparation for a market launch in 2026. While maintaining the exact styling design of the concept model, the prototype features both the low height and sporty styling that sets the Saloon apart from other EVs, and an interior space that is more spacious than people would expect based on the exterior dimensions.
The Honda 0 Saloon, the flagship model of the Honda 0 Series, will be based on the newly developed dedicated EV architecture and will feature a number of next-generation technologies that embody the “Thin, Light and Wise” development approach.
At CES 2025, Honda is focusing on introducing certain technologies and features that contribute to the “Wise” value of the Honda 0 Saloon. This includes the highly reliable Level 3 automated driving technology, which Honda put into practical use for the first time in the world, as well as “ultra-personal optimization” that will offer a mobility experience customized for each individual user, which will become possible with the ASIMO OS.
The production model of the Honda 0 Saloon is scheduled to be introduced first in the North American market in 2026, then in global markets, including Japan and Europe.
■ Honda 0 SUV
Based on the Space-Hub concept model unveiled at CES 2024, proposing the new value of EVs as a “space” for people that Honda will offer with its future EV models, the company has now presented the prototype of a mid-size EV SUV – which will be the first Honda 0 Series model. By applying the “Thin, Light, and Wise” approach to an SUV, the interior space was further increased, and a spacious cabin was achieved with an outstandingly clear and unrestricted field of view with great flexibility.
Alongside the wide variety of next-generation technologies, the Honda 0 SUV will apply high-precision attitude estimation and stabilization control. This is based on 3D gyro sensors, technology Honda has amassed through the development of its original robotics technologies, to enable dynamics at the will of the driver on various road surfaces.
The production model of the Honda 0 SUV is scheduled to be introduced first in North American market in the first half of 2026, then in global markets, including Japan and Europe.
■ ASIMO OS
Honda 0 Series models will be equipped with the ASIMO OS, an original vehicle OS developed by Honda, which will be the core technology to achieve the ‘Wise’ value of the global EV series.
ASIMO was a humanoid robot capable of autonomous walking, developed as part of Honda fundamental technology research with the aim of helping people while coexisting with those in society. Honda began robotics research and development in 1986, and introduced ASIMO in 2000, becoming an icon in the field of robotics from the 2000s through 2010s and loved by people all over the world.
Even after concluding development of ASIMO, Honda has been further advancing its robotics technologies, including those that recognize external environments and autonomous behavior control enabling ASIMO to understand the intentions of people around it. By combining such robotics technologies with advanced intelligence technologies for the Honda 0 Series, the company strives to offer a unique value for software defined vehicles (SDVs).
As a software platform, ASIMO OS will apply integrated control of electronic control units (ECUs) for vehicle systems such as automated driving / advanced driver assistance systems (AD/ADAS) and the in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system.
By constantly updating the in-vehicle software through over the air (OTA) updates even after the purchase of the vehicle, functions and services will be continuously advanced in accordance with the preferences and needs of each user. The functions and services subject to constant updates include those which enhance the value of “space” and the digital UX, that ensures a fun and comfortable mobility experience. Also, integrated control of dynamics unique to Honda, that determines the joy of driving, enabling the driver to feel at one with the vehicle.
■ Automated driving (AD) technology
In 2021, Honda became the world’s first automaker to put Level 3 automated driving equipment into practical use with the launch of the all-new Legend equipped with Honda SENSING Elite, which qualified for Level 3 automated driving (eyes-off), and conditional driving automation in limited areas.
Honda developed Honda SENSING Elite to put this AD technology into practical use by anticipating all driving conditions and scenarios based on the premise that, in addition to reducing the number of traffic collisions in society, Honda AD must completely eliminate traffic accidents that people think a “human driver could avoid.”
Honda believes that the widespread use of eyes-off technology will lead toward the realization of zero traffic collision fatalities in the future. Based on this belief, Honda will strive to offer affordable automated driving vehicles to more customers around the world through the Honda 0 Series.
To this end, Honda has applied an original Honda AI technology that combines the unsupervised learning*1 technology of Helm.ai and the behavior models of experienced drivers, which enable AI to learn with smaller amounts of data, and efficiently expand the range of situations where automated driving and driver assistance can be available.
In addition, Honda will apply its original cooperative AI developed through research into people and mobility to further improve the precision of cooperative behavior, such as yielding the right of way to others on the road, which is difficult even for a human driver. By applying these advanced technologies, Honda will realize a highly reliable driver assistance system that can respond quickly and appropriately to unexpected situations, such as an animal darting into the lane or an object falling onto the road.
Honda 0 Series models will be equipped with a system that enables the expansion of the range of driving conditions where driver assistance and Level 3 automated driving will be available. This expansion will start with eyes-off technology available in traffic congestion on highways, and will continue through OTA updates.
With Level 3 automated driving, the vehicle will be in charge of driving, which will enable a human driver to perform a “second task” while en route to their destination, whether watching a movie or remotely joining a meeting. Honda will further advance its technologies and become the first automaker to expand the application of eyes-off functions to all driving situations, opening up new possibilities for mobility.
■ Development of SoC dedicated to Honda 0 Series
Honda and Renesas Electronics Corporation (Renesas) have announced an agreement to develop a high-performance system-on-chip (SoC) to realize the future SDVs the company aims to achieve with Honda 0 Series models.
For next generation models, which will be launched in the late 2020s, Honda will adopt a centralized E&E architecture that combines multiple ECUs, responsible for controlling vehicle systems, into a single, core ECU. This will serve as the heart of the SDV and manage various vehicle systems, such as AD/ADAS, powertrain control, and comfort features. To achieve this, the ECU requires a SoC that provides higher processing performance than traditional systems, while minimizing any increase in power consumption.
To fulfill such requirements, Honda and Renesas will realize a system that utilizes multi-die chiplet technology*2 to combine the Renesas generic fifth generation (Gen 5) R-Car X5 SoC series with an AI accelerator optimized for AI software developed independently by Honda. With this combination, the two companies aim to develop a system that achieves one of the industry’s top class AI performances of 2,000 TOPS*3 (Sparse) with 20 TOPS/W power efficiency.
*1 Unsupervised learning is one of the methods of machine learning, which supports AI. Unlike supervised learning through which AI learns the correct answers to derive from labeled input data, unsupervised learning lets AI learn without being provided with the correct answers and derives the patterns and unique characteristics of the unlabeled data on its own.
*2 Technology to build a system by combining multiple chips (dies) with different functions
*3 Tera Operations Per Second (TOPS) is a metric of AI processing performance and measures the number of operations that can be performed per second. Based on a sparse AI model.
