Automotive website Carnichiwa.com has posted a short walkaround video of a 2017 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid outside the American Honda Museum in Torrance, California. Acura hasn’t released any new photos or videos since the New York debut, so it’s interesting to see the 2017 MDX outdoors in a darker color like Fathom Blue Pearl for the first time.

3D Artist Renders Alternate Second-Generation NSX Design

Although overall impressions of the new NSX have been well received, a common complaint is that it didn’t stay true to the original NSX design. We just recently discovered a render from Swedish 3D artist Andreas Ezelius who posted his own NSX vision last year:

    “This is my own interpretation of a new Honda/Acura NSX. My goal was to keep the original proportions of the 90s car and add my own minimalistic design to it.”

The render is more of an evolution of the original, keeping the long rear deck and overhangs while also maintaining a centered greenhouse. It actually reminds us of a first generation NSX with a refined widebody kit.

It’s a beautiful design that we think could have worked years ago as a continuation to the first NSX, but by today’s standards, it doesn’t quite present itself as a “car of the future” like the new NSX does.

    American Honda sedan and light truck sales push April sales up 14.4 percent to new record
    Honda Division posts best ever April with strong car and truck sales
    Acura Division marks April increase on record sales of RDX

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported a new April sales record of 148,829 Honda and Acura vehicles, an increase of 14.4 percent for the month. Year to date American Honda sales reached 506,532, up 9.2 percent. The Honda Division set a new monthly record with 132,623 units sold in April, an increase of 15.1 percent compared to April 2015 with year to date sales up 10.5 percent. Acura Division sales totaled 16,206, an increase of 9 percent in April with year to date sales reaching 54,081.

Acura strengthened its position in the luxury vehicle segment as the brand experienced strong sedan and record light truck sales in April. The Acura light truck lineup posted its best April sales on record sales of the RDX luxury SUV. Acura sedans racked up sales of over 5,500 units on the strength of the ILX gateway sedan and TLX performance luxury sedan.

    The RDX continues to show month-over-month sales increases, leading all Acura models in April and setting a new all-time monthly sales record of 5,905 units, an increase of 48.7 percent in April.
    The ILX gateway sports sedan continues to catch the attention of Millennial buyers as April sales totaled 1,633 for the month. The ILX has captured a higher rate of under 35 year old buyers than any other vehicle in the entry-luxury sedan segment since 20101.

“Acura performance sedans and SUVs continue to gain momentum and market share in their segments,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura division. “Our lineup will further strengthen this summer when the restyled and reengineered MDX hits Acura dealerships.”

Arizona to Alaska and Back: 2013 Acura ILX Road Trip

Tyson Hugie is putting his 2013 ILX 6-speed to the ultimate durability test with a two-week drive from Arizona to Alaska and back.

Yesterday, some 3,871 miles from his home in Phoenix, he arrived at the Arctic Circle. It’s an area so far north that one day per year, the sun never sets, and one day per year, the sun never rises. At times the winter temperatures there reach 80 below zero Fahrenheit. The roads leading up to the Arctic are rough and un-paved; it’s a four hour drive north of Fairbanks to get there.

American Honda Reports May Sales Results

Jun 1, 2016 – TORRANCE, Calif.

With two fewer selling days this May versus a year ago, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported May sales of 147,108 units, a year-over-year decline of 4.8 percent. However, year-to-date American Honda sales of 653,640 units are up 5.7 percent versus year-ago results as the company remains on track for a second straight year of record-setting sales.

Coming off a successful sell-down of the outgoing 2016 RDX SUV and facing regional shortfalls in inventories of the MDX seven-passenger SUV, Acura posted a 20.4 percent decline in May results on sales of 13,561 Acura cars and SUVs.

“Inventory issues and a challenging market for luxury sedan sales took the wind out of our sails in May, but with the excitement of the NSX now coming to market and the restyled and significantly refreshed 2017 MDX arriving later this month we look to continue our growth this summer,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura division.

Vehicle Features World’s First All-Electric, 4-Motor SH-AWD® Powertrain

Acura will campaign an all-electric, NSX-inspired EV Concept in the Electric Modified Class at the 2016 Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The Acura EV Concept features a further evolution of the experimental, all-electric, 4-motor Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) powertrain that won last year’s Pikes Peak Challenge Exhibition class.

The supercar-inspired Acura EV Concept will be driven by Tetsuya Yamano, who campaigned last year’s CR-Z-based electric prototype. The Acura EV Concept is the ultimate embodiment of the all-wheel-drive Electric SH-AWD powertrain featuring a world’s first technology that enables four-wheel independent torque allocation. The Acura EV Concept’s Electric SH-AWD powertrain produces three times the total system output of last year’s electric prototype and is mated to the NSX body.

“We’ve been tuning the car for several weeks at Pikes and have advanced its performance significantly,” said Tetsuya Yamano. “We’re honored to be running at Pikes in this historical, anniversary year – an event respected by racing fans all over the world.”

4-Motor Development

Honda R&D has been developing “super handling” technology for more than 20 years in the pursuit of ideal vehicle handling. By applying separate Twin Motor Units (TMUs), the brains of Sport Hybrid SH-AWD, on each axle, Acura has achieved independent torque distribution to all four corners – true four-wheel torque vectoring. Based upon the learnings from last year’s race, the team updated the system management of the powertrain for more precise thrust at each wheel.

Acura’s unique Sport Hybrid SH-AWD technology utilizes the highly responsive acceleration characteristics and regeneration capability of electric motors to further advance the torque vectoring systems currently applied to NSX, and available on RLX and the upcoming 2017 MDX. The system enables ideal handling characteristics in various driving situations by coordinating and managing all dynamic systems, including Electronic Power Steering (EPS), Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) and Sport Hybrid SH-AWD.

With its high-output electric motors and 4-motor torque vectoring, the Concept is well suited to the demands of the 156 complex corners the driver will encounter on the drive up Pikes Peak.

    Ryan Eversley claims two flag-to-flag victories in doubleheader race weekend
    Adds victory on Sunday to Saturday triumph
    Peter Cunningham completes 1-2 Acura Saturday sweep, runs 4th on Sunday

Acura’s Ryan Eversley completed a sweep of the Pirelli World Challenge doubleheader race weekend at Road America, adding a second flag-to-flag victory in Sunday’s 50-minute race to his equally dominant winning performance on Saturday.

In Saturday’s opener, Eversley swept into the lead in the run to the first turn, and never looked back, heading a 1-2 finish for Acura Motorsports and RealTime Racing.  Teammate Peter Cunningham completed the sweep, bringing his Acura TLX GT home second in the first of this weekend’s two races at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Starting on the outside of front row, second, Eversley outran the Bentley of pole qualifier Adderly Fong on the long Road America front straight, taking his Acura TLX GT into a lead he would hold throughout the 50-minute contest.  Eversley completed a dominating performance by setting fastest race lap, gaining the pole position for Sunday’s follow-up race.

On Sunday, Eversley briefly lost the lead to rival Bryan Heitkotter in the run from the green flag to Turn One, but had regained the advantage by Turn Three and, once again, was never headed, taking the checkers by 2.623 seconds over Fong for his second victory of the weekend.

“Our results this weekend reinforce the image of Acura as a performance brand, against the likes of Audi, Ferrari, and Mercedes,” said Art St. Cyr, president of Honda Performance Development.  “Congratulations to Ryan, Peter, everyone at RealTime Racing and HPD for a dominating performance.  Ryan’s victory sweep this weekend and Peter’s second and fourth-place finishes, at their home track, was a definite ‘feel good’ story.  We look forward to our own ‘home track’ appearance next month at Mid-Ohio, where we hope to build on these results.”

The wins were the first of the season for Eversley, and the second and third GT class victories of his Pirelli Word Challenge career.

“I can’t say ‘thanks’ enough to everyone at Acura, RealTime Racing and Honda Performance Development,” Eversley said at the end of Sunday’s race.  “This has been an unbelievable weekend, unreal.  Brian [Heitkotter] had a great start and beat me into Turn One.  Fortunately, I was able to get a run on him going into [Turn] Three and pass him back.  He had another good run at me going into Turn Five, but I was able to out-brake him there, and eventually he dropped back.  This track really suits the TLX GT, but we’ve had to work hard.  We found some setup things in a test here a couple of weeks ago that I think made the difference for us this weekend.  I race for the best team, and the best company, in the world.”

Starting third on Sunday in his RealTime Racing Acura TLX GT, Cunningham fell to fifth on the opening lap after minor contact with Fong, but recovered to finish fourth.

“To finish fourth today is a good effort. Obviously, would have preferred to be on the podium, but we didn’t have quite as good a run as yesterday,” Cunningham recounted.  “At the start, I had to lift to make room for [Adderly[ Fong going into Turn One, and we still made some light contact.  After that, the car was a little nervous entering Turn One and the [Turn 9-10] Carousel, and we just didn’t have quite enough to run at the front.  Still, it’s a great day for Acura, HPD and RealTime, and to cheer on Ryan [Eversley] for his win.”

Developed from the production Acura TLX by HPD and RealTime Racing, the Acura TLX GT features HPD chassis and aerodynamic performance parts approved for Pirelli World Challenge competition.  It is powered by a direct-injected, twin-turbocharged V6 engine, developed by HPD from the production Acura TLX.

    Acura NSX wins its North American racing debut by more than 11 seconds
    American-built NSX wins Time Attack 2 class at 100th running of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb
    NSX-inspired Acura 4-Motor EV Concept finishes second in the Electric Modified Class

The recently-launched 2017 Acura NSX claimed victory today in its North American racing competition debut, climbing the 14,115-foot pinnacle of Pikes Peak and clinching first place in the Time Attack 2 class at the 2016 Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the 100th anniversary of the running of America’s second oldest race.

The production-based Acura NSX is powered by Acura’s revolutionary three-motor Sport Hybrid Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive™ powertrain (Sport Hybrid SH-AWD®), the first electrified torque vectoring powertrain in the world of exotic sports cars. With added required safety equipment for competition, the NSX negotiated the 12.42-mile course in a time of 10:28.820 to win the Time Attack 2 class of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Nick Robinson, North American R&D team member and engineer in charge of the next-generation supercar’s dynamic performance, drove the production-based Acura NSX to victory. Nick is also the reigning PP250 winner from the 2015 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

“I’m incredibly happy to have won the Production Class with the new NSX!” Robinson reported. “The hard work the entire development team has put into the NSX over the past few years really paid off today.”

Two additional Acura vehicles – the NSX-inspired 4-Motor Acura EV Concept, driven by Tetsuya Yamano, and a modified 2017 Acura NSX, driven by Nick’s brother, James Robinson – also campaigned in the race. Yamano finished second in the Electric Modified class in the NSX-inspired EV, posting a time of 9:06.015 (79.119 mph), which made him the third fastest on the overall charts. The Acura EV Concept’s all-electric SH-AWD® powertrain boasts peak output three times the total system output of the CR-Z prototype that ran last year, featuring a world’s first technology that enables four-wheel independent torque allocation.

“For our new NSX to win one of the most historic and challenging races on the planet in its North American racing debut is a great achievement for everyone involved in creating the American-built supercar,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura Division. “The performance of NSX in this year’s race is a testament to Acura’s Precision Crafted Performance DNA and will serve as a launching pad for future racing endeavors.”

American Honda Reports June Sales Increase, Setting New Records for Light Trucks

    Honda CR-V leads with new June sales record
    Honda cars continue to show gains, with across-the-board increases in June
    Acura NSX deliveries begin and the redesigned 2017 Acura MDX hits the market

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported June sales of 138,715 Honda and Acura vehicles, a year-over-year increase of 3.2 percent and a new June record for light trucks which gained 2.2 percent on sales of 68,780. Honda division trucks also set a new June record, jumping 6.6 percent on sales of 61,469 vehicles while Honda cars enjoyed an even greater increase, rising 7.7 percent on sales of 65,894 units. Acura division sales totaled 11,352 in June, a decrease of 26.9 percent versus last year. Total American Honda six-month sales of Honda and Acura vehicles are up 5.2 percent versus year-ago results.

Acura

After the recent sell-down of 2016 RDX and MDX and 2017 models starting to fill the pipeline, Acura posted a 26.9 percent decline in June on sales 11,352 vehicles. With a newly refreshed 2017 Acura MDX hitting the ground and a special summer sales campaign launching soon, Acura looks toward an improving summer sales picture.

“With initial deliveries of the NSX under way and the redesigned 2017 MDX now hitting showrooms, we’re looking ahead to a strong second half of the year,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura division.

Jul 7, 2016 – TORRANCE, Calif.

Acura motorsports is on a roll – fresh off a near production NSX winning its North American racing debut at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in the Time Attack 2 class, Acura has released the first official images of the NSX GT3 racecar as it prepares to campaign in North America in 2017.  The twin-turbocharged Acura NSX GT3 was photographed with exposed, lightweight, carbon fiber bodywork at GingerMan Raceway in South Haven, MI as part of its continued development at circuits throughout the U.S. The vehicle is slated for homologation as an FIA GT3 class racecar this fall.

“Building on the very solid foundation of the production NSX, we’re making steady progress in our development and looking forward to campaigning the GT3 racecar next year,” said Art St. Cyr, president of Honda Performance Development.

The Acura NSX GT3 racecar features custom bodywork and aero components including a large deck wing spoiler, underbody diffuser and enlarged hood vents for efficient engine cooling.  The NSX GT3 racecar is powered by a 3.5-liter, 75-degree, twin turbocharged DOHC V-6 engine using the same design specifications as the engine in the production 2017 Acura NSX, including the block, heads, valvetrain, crankshaft, pistons and dry sump lubrication system.  The engine is paired with a 6-speed, sequential-shift racing gearbox, delivering power to the rear wheels.

The Acura NSX GT3 is produced by the Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio, the exclusive manufacturing home for the new Acura NSX.  Its twin turbocharged V-6 engine is also assembled in Ohio1. Initial development of the NSX GT3 racecar was conducted by the company’s Japan race engineering arm with testing on race circuits in Europe and Japan.  Additional development, testing and final homologation to FIA GT3 global racing specifications is currently being undertaken by the company’s North American race engineering group, Honda Performance Development (HPD), in Santa Clarita, California.

The Acura NSX GT3 racecar will advance the rich legacy of Acura sports car racing campaigns and championships, including the 1991, 1992 and 1993 IMSA Camel Lights manufacturer and driver championships, and the 2009 American LeMans manufacturer, driver and team championships in both the LMP1 and LMP2 classes.  Acura currently campaigns a pair of TLX GT cars with Real Time Racing in the Pirelli World Challenge.  On Sunday, June 26, Acura’s Ryan Eversley completed a sweep of the doubleheader race weekend at Road America in the TLX GT.

The refreshed 2017 Acura MDXs are just starting to arrive at dealerships and Mike Chan over at Acura of Pembroke Pines already had his way with one of them. Mike is known for using Vossen Wheels for all his Acura projects, so this fully accessorized Crystal Black Pearl MDX on 22″ Vossen CVT wheels should come to no surprise.

It’s the first time we’ve seen the 2017 MDX with aftermarket wheels and the combo looks pretty good – though we’re still pretty big fans of the 20-inch Berlina Black alloy wheel factory option.

For nearly 3 decades, the RealTime name has been synonymous with Acura performance. RealTime’s Peter Cunningham has taken the brand to dozens of race wins since 1987. And now, he’s unveiled RealTime’s own private collection of special Honda and Acura cars. Located not far from RealTime’s headquarters in Saukville, Wisconsin, the Collection Hall features a replica storefront to Honda’s original location in Los Angeles in the 1960s, surrounded by dozens of mint-condition and rare models from the company’s history.

The 2016 Monterey Car Week capped off at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance event this past Sunday where Acura featured their Precision Concept on the exclusive “concept lawn”. We first saw the Acura Precision Concept when it debuted the diamond pentagon grille earlier this year at the 2016 North American International Auto Show, but this was the first time it has been displayed publicly outdoors in natural light.

From the photos we’ve seen, we thought the Acura Precision Concept looked pretty good in its environment, holding its own even among all the other wild concepts.

Japanese customers will finally get their chance to purchase the 2017 NSX as today Honda announced sales of their Hybrid supercar have officially begun in Japan.

We knew the Honda-badged Japanese NSX would of course be right-hand drive, but what other changes could there be for the JDM model? Sadly we didn’t see much difference from the USDM model, but we did notice the optional Modulo Accessory Wheels.

The MR-R03 Aluminum wheels are black with red center caps, 19×8.5 in the front and 20×11 in the rear. What’s cool is that they appear to be the same wheels used on the Drago Modulo NSX CONCEPT-GT currently running in the SUPER GT series.
