Asa cum puteti vedea in fotografia oferita de designerul maghiar, NSX Type R prezita un look mult mai agresiv, asa cum este normal. In ceea ce priveste versiunea de serie, aceasta va sosi cu un sistem de propulsie cu trei motoare electrice si unul conventional. Doua dintre unitatile electrice vor propulsa puntea fata, in timp ce al treilea se va ocupa de sustinerea motorului cu combustie interna.

You’ll find a handful of Acuras at the newly opened Honda Heritage Center in Marysville Ohio, but the one car you’ve probably never seen or heard of before is the mysterious Acura Sedan Design Study.

Created in early 2011, the Acura Sedan Design Study looks like a sleek sedan version of the Acura NSX Roadster that appeared in The Avengers from 2012. While the rear of the car is lacking and begging for details, other design elements like the long sloping roofline and short front overhangs are things I would be excited to see in future Acura sedans. Check out that side profile and tell me you don’t agree.

We reached out to our contact at Acura and she provided a few extra photos and the description which appears alongside the vehicle at the Honda Heritage Center:

Acura Sedan Design Study

Most concept cars are never seen outside the walls of Honda R&D Americas’ California design studios.

This never-before-seen concept, the Acura Sedan Design Study, was created by stylists at the Acura Design Studio in early 2011 to set the direction for future Acura luxury performance sedans.

The Acura Sedan Design Study exterior styling pursued a modern design with classic luxury sedan proportions – low and wide, with a longer dash-to-axle ratio (the distance between the leading edge of the dash and the front axle). The styling is accented by ceramic- type headlights and chrome trim that runs the length of the body, finishing as rear taillights.

A customizable interior was designed to achieve a new HMI (human-machine interface) experience with an elegant and intuitive layout, a three-dimensional meter design and a navigation system where the user will feel immersed in the decision-making.

With the Acura Sedan Design Study, the styling team created a road map for Acura design – a direction that has since been eclipsed by further styling concepts that will lead to future Acura luxury sedans.

It didn’t take long for digital artists and photoshoppers to have their way with the new Acura NSX. If you knew where to search, you could probably find the 2016 NSX rendered in the color of your choice shortly after the debut. But the customizations didn’t end with just a few color changes or wheel swaps, visions of different NSX variations started to appear within the week, from a simple targa top model to the extreme GT racer featured above.

NSX Prototype Spotted in Australia



An NSX Prototype was spotted a long way from home once again, but this time it wasn’t track testing in Germany.

Last week the NSX was caught hot-weather testing in a town called Alice Springs in Northern Territory, Australia. Australian automotive website CarAdvice has collected several photos of the camouflaged vehicle seen around town, which probably wasn’t hard to miss especially with the bright yellow “left hand drive” sticker on the rear. Some have speculated Acura engineers were in Northern Territory to make use of a particular stretch of highway with an open speed limit just outside of Alice Springs.

It’s probably safe to assume blue isn’t the most popular color choice for the TLX. In fact if you do an image search, you won’t find many “real world” photos of Fathom Blue Pearl TLXs. At least, not yet. I think after seeing these shots of Luis’ modded TLX in Fathom Blue Pearl, prospective TLX buyers might just have to rethink their color preference.

Luis’ 2.4L TLX Tech is accessorized with the OEM Aero Kit, Decklid Spoiler and fog lights, and rides on Vossen CVT wheels 20×9 in the front and 20×10 in the rear. Other mods include a D2 Racing RS Series suspension kit and K&N drop-in filter.

Is Acura too American to compete globally?


ASAHIKAWA, Japan -- Honda Motor Co.'s outgoing global r&d chief is blunt about Acura's challenge: It aims to be a global brand, but its U.S. engineers have little experience designing global vehicles.

"Acura is an American brand," Yoshiharu Yamamoto said during a drive event at Honda Motor Co.'s nearby proving ground in northern Japan, just days before his retirement was announced by the company as part of a top management overhaul that included the ousting of CEO Takanobu Ito.

Koichi Fukuo, the company’s newly appointed quality czar charged with fixing the problems, will be appointed new president of Honda R&D, the company said today.

But during his recent interview, Yamamoto said if Acura doesn't evolve into a global brand, the marque's business model is going to "get tough."

The problem: American engineers have tunnel vision for the gigantic U.S. market, while Japanese engineers for years have been designing cars with an eye to world markets.

"America r&d looks at domestic America very well, but it seems it is still a bit difficult to make optimal models while looking at China, India and the rest of the world," Yamamoto said.

"The Japanese market is small, and our carmaking has always had to think about overseas as the main markets," he added. "The American business is huge, and they look almost only at America."

That may be a hurdle for Acura as executives in Japan and the U.S. grapple with how to establish it as a global premium brand.

Most of Acura's lineup is engineered and manufactured in North America, but it was not always that way.

The brand made waves when it was launched in 1986 as the first Japanese luxury marque. When Acura debuted, all its vehicles were assembled in Japan. Today, only the flagship RLX is built there.

Only one Acura model is even sold in Japan: the RLX, badged as the Honda Legend. The U.S.-made NSX sports car eventually will be sold in Japan -- also with a Honda badge.

"Though it started with Japanese technologies, after twenty and some years, now we consider it born in America," said Fukuo, who became global quality czar on Nov. 1 before his promotion today. 

Acura's 2014 global sales totaled 195,000 vehicles, down from a record 232,000 in 2005. North America accounted for 97 percent of the 2014 volume, with China pitching in 4,464 vehicles and another 1,173 coming from Russia, Turkey and Ukraine.

Ironically, Acura has even less global reach than American-born premium brands such as Cadillac.

Cadillac sales outside the U.S. and Canada in 2014 totaled 83,409.

"Acura needs to follow Cadillac's strategy of introducing a performance vehicle that is considered revolutionary, but offer it at a price that is consistent with consumer perceptions of the Acura brand," said Eric Lyman, TrueCar's vice president of industry insights.

Kelley Blue Book data show Acura buyers cross-shop Toyota, Honda, Ford, Nissan and Mazda more than any premium brands, underscoring the gap between Acura and its intended rivals.

Acura aims to set up a channel this year targeting rich markets in the Middle East.

The feeling in Japan, though, is that Acura needs better traction in its adopted home market to have any real shot overseas. "Unless we establish the brand properly" in America, Yamamoto said, "we think there will be no global deployment."

A Look at the 2016 Acura ILX Aero Kit

Based on these images of a fully accessorized 2016 Acura ILX, I’d have to say this Aero Kit is one of the most aggressive designs Acura has ever offered.

What makes this kit unique is the addition of black, or “carbon fiber” sections on the front and rear underbody spoilers. It’s the first time Acura has used these type of dark accents so prominently, and on lighter colored cars the contrast will be striking. I’m doubtful that the pieces will actually be carbon fiber, but they do seem to have a different texture or pattern that is distinguishable from the rest of the body-colored attachments. To me the front bumper styling is very BMW M3ish, and that’s a good thing for those looking for an aggressive sporty look.

With the most comprehensive suite of safety and driver assistive technologies yet available on an Acura, the 2016 RLX luxury sedan goes on sale March 3 with manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) unchanged from the previous model year. This price hold represents a significant value, especially for the Technology package due to the addition of AcuraWatch™ and Advance package which includes the first U.S. application of Acura’s Surround View Camera system3. Both RLX packages will also adopt the application of Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) and Cross Traffic Monitor.

The Acura RLX luxury sedan boasts an abundance of standard premium attributes and features. These include a powerful and smooth 310 horsepower, direct-injected i-VTEC V-6 engine that contributes to the RLX’s EPA fuel economy ratings of 20/31/24 mpg (city/highway/combined)2, agile and sporty handling with Precision All-Wheel Steer™ (P-AWS™), distinctive Jewel Eye™ LED headlights, 19-inch bright-finished wheels and next generation AcuraLink® connected car system.

Available on all trims and standard on the Technology and Advance packages, the RLX now includes AcuraWatch™, a comprehensive suite of safety and driver assistive technologies that help to improve the driver’s situational awareness and, in certain circumstances, intervene to help avoid a collision or mitigate its severity. The AcuraWatch™ suite of available features – depending upon trim – includes:

AcuraWatch™

At the heart of AcuraWatch™ is the fusion of camera and radar technology that can sense the roadway and objects within it, including other vehicles and pedestrians. This technology underpins the systems that help provide the driver with superior vision around the vehicle, can alert the driver of potential issues and, if necessary, intervene to help keep the RLX from departing a lane, departing the road, or help to avoid or mitigate the severity of a collision. These systems include Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) and Cross Traffic Monitor, both of which are new to the RLX.

Surround View Camera3

For 2016, the Acura RLX with Advance Package includes the first U.S. application of Acura’s Surround View Camera system3 that provides a 360-degree image of the area around the vehicle. The surround view camera system is designed to assist drivers during critical and precise maneuvers in snug parking situations. Using four separate cameras, views from behind, directly in front of, and both left and right sides of the vehicle can be displayed on the navigation screen. The system can also use all four cameras to seamlessly create a composite bird’s eye image, to provide the driver with information about the surroundings. In addition, dynamic on-screen guidelines help the driver see their projected path relative to the lines demarking parking spaces or other objects, allowing them to maneuver with greater confidence.

Road Departure Mitigation (RDM)

New for the 2016 Acura RLX, Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) uses a Monocular Camera (mounted on the upper portion of the windshield) to identify solid or dashed painted lane lines, Botts’ Dots and Cat Eye markers. RDM uses both steering force, via EPS, and braking force, via VSA, to help the RLX stay a detected lane.

The monocular camera can recognize lane features and identify a lane or roadway edge. If the RDM system determines that the RLX is about to leave a detected lane or roadway defined by solid lines, it will provide steering assist (primary) and, in rare occasions when steering is not sufficient, braking assist to help the driver stay on the road. If a lane only identified by dashed lines, Bott’s Dots or Cat Eye markers and the system determines that there is an unintended departure, no braking assist will be provided. Instead, the RLX will use active steering force to return to the detected lane. RDM is integrated with the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system to provide moderate braking, and with the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system to provide steering input.

Multiple visual and audible warnings alert the driver when the RDM system is taking corrective action. These include a lane departure warning on the driver’s Multi Information Display (MID) along with an audible warning. RDM also has a customizable initial warning of either a steering wheel shake/vibration and/or an audible alert. This can be customized in the vehicle settings.

Cross Traffic Monitor

Another new driver assistive technology included with AcuraWatch™, the Cross Traffic Monitor works in conjunction with the RLX’s Blind Spot Information (BSI) radar sensors to enhance driver confidence when backing up. The system is especially useful when reversing in congested parking lots with an obstructed view from the driver’s seat.

The system utilizes a pair of blind-spot radar units located in the rear bumper corners. When Reverse is selected and an approaching vehicle is detected, arrows indicating the approaching vehicle’s direction are shown on the center display’s rear camera image. An audible warning is simultaneously emitted.

Additional Enhancements for 2016 RLX

To improve overall ride and handling quality and reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), the chassis of the 2016 RLX has received multiple tuning refinements. Both the front and rear shock absorbers get an increase in piston rod diameter and the rear stabilizer bar’s stiffness is decreased. The front and rear spring rates and shock absorber damping force were all decreased to provide better shock absorption and road surface tracking. Furthermore, the front upper spring/shock mounts and rear bump stops were changed for improved action.

The 2016 Acura RLX is available in three trims, RLX with Navigation, RLX with Technology Package and RLX with Advance Package. The RLX with Navigation has been upgraded for 2016 with the same larger 19-inch wheels as standard on the other trims with a new bright finish The RLX with Technology Package has been enhanced with AcuraWatch™ as standard. The RLX with Advance Package has been improved with AcuraWatch™ including surround view camera and a bi-directional remote engine starter. Also for 2016 a new Acura Silver Metallic color is available.

    Acura trucks set new February benchmark, with a 12.5 percent gain on sales of 8,415
    Honda Fit sets new February record, rising 81 percent on sales of 5,652 units
    Honda Pilot has February to remember, with sales up 82.7 percent

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported February Honda and Acura vehicle sales of 105,466 units, an increase of 5.0 percent versus February 2014. Sales of Acura light trucks set a new February record, rising 12.5 percent on sales of 8,415 vehicles. The Honda Division sold 92,474 vehicles in February—an increase of 4.1 percent for the month. The Acura brand posted sales of 12,992 units in February, rising 12.5 percent over the same period last year.

Acura trucks continue to light up the sales charts with RDX setting a new February best just ahead of the launch of the refreshed 2016 model. MDX also sold at near record levels during a transition month as the 2016 model became available at Acura dealers in early February. Combined, the RDX and MDX gave Acura trucks a new February sales record.

TLX sales remain strong, taking important share in the super-competitive mid-luxury sedan segment and spurring overall Acura car sales to 4,577 in February, an increase of 12.7 percent. And the significantly revised 2016 ILX went on sale mid-month, adding new power to a strengthening Acura sedan lineup.

    RDX captured yet another monthly sales record with 3,862 units sold in February, up 32.7 percent for the month.
    MDX maintained a strong pace as America’s 3-row luxury SUV sales leader easily surpassed 4,500 units again.
    RDX and MDX combined for a February record of 8,415 Acura trucks sold in February, an increase of 12.5 percent for the month.

“While bone-chilling winter weather takes its toll on much of the country, Acura sales continue to reflect a strong warming trend,” said Mike Accavitti, Acura division senior vice president and general manager. “Our MDX and RDX luxury SUVs remain red hot—with refreshed 2016 models only adding fuel to the fire. And the substantially upgraded 2016 ILX sport sedan now in showrooms nationwide will burn brighter than ever.”

Acura continues to advance its reputation as a safety leader and innovator with the 2015 Acura TLX receiving a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score, the top available rating in the U.S. government’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), including 5-stars in all nine vehicle test modes. The Acura TLX performance luxury sedan, introduced in August 2014, has quickly become one of Acura’s best-selling vehicles and is one of only three 2015 model vehicles in the midsize luxury/near luxury category to earn both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating and the NHTSA 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score.
