Review: Chris Harris on the 2017 Acura NSX


There are your regular car reviewers, and then there’s Chris Harris. Famous for his work with evo, Autocar, Jalopnik, and Chris Harris on Cars, his recent video comparing the LaFerrari, Porsche 918, and McLaren P1 has quickly reached over one million views.

As one of the more popular automotive journalists today, a positive review from Chris on the new NSX would be a huge win for Acura and Honda. Fortunately, Chris’ first review in evo Magazine is a favorable one, awarding the NSX 4.5 stars out of a possible 5. That’s a pretty good score coming from a guy who regularly tests supercars.

    “Traction is predictably impressive, but the mind games really begin when you switch all the clever traction control off and see what happens when you provoke the NSX… The search uncovers only good things. You can play with this car – allow the front to push, use that mid-engined layout to alter the line and rotate the rear. It’s not as easily playful as a 488 or an R8 because those pesky front motors always ultimately want to drag the car straight again. But it is way more fun than I’d imagined it would be and, most importantly, it demonstrates the depth of chassis development that has been undertaken to make this car worthy of the NSX badge.”

Video: Motor Trend Ignition Reviews the 2017 Acura NSX



The YouTube video is titled: “2017 Acura NSX: The Slowest Supercar in the World?” It’s a clever headline to get people clicking to see a video that’s actually worth the watch. But just to clarify, they’re NOT referring to 0-60 times or the actual speed of the new NSX, rather it was a jab at Acura for taking so long to produce a successor to the original NSX.

The video itself is just over 13-minutes long, and is one of the most comprehensive and visually inspiring reviews on the 2017 NSX to date. Ignition host Jason Cammisa starts off with a nice intro of the original NSX and then transitions into the development process of the second generation NSX. There’s even an explanation on torque-vectoring, wheel chair and all.

Cammisa goes on to describe what he likes and dislikes about the new NSX, and you’ll soon find that he doesn’t hold back on his criticism. Though I found that much of it comes from his comparisons to the original, and his notion that the new NSX should have stayed more true to its lineage.

    First 2017 NSX to be auctioned for charity at Barrett-Jackson in January
    Online configurator and customer order taking to begin Feb. 25

Acura today announced additional launch details for the next-generation 2017 Acura NSX supercar, coming to market next spring, including pricing and the order taking process. Acura also revealed plans to auction off the very first serial production NSX, VIN 001, at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. the last week of January 2016.  All proceeds from the auction sale will go to a pair of children’s charities: the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and Camp Southern Ground, the passion project of Grammy Award-winning artist Zac Brown.

Designed, developed and manufactured in America, the 2017 Acura NSX will have a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP)1 of $156,000 in the U.S. and will top out at $205,700 when equipped with all available factory features and options1. As Acura’s first build-to-order vehicle, customers will be able to design their NSX by selecting one of eight rich exterior colors and four interior color schemes available in three different seating surface options. Customers can further customize their NSX through several exterior and interior features including three wheel designs with painted or polished finish, carbon-ceramic brake options, a carbon fiber interior sport package, carbon fiber roof, and more.

“The NSX is the pinnacle expression of Acura precision crafted performance and we’re thrilled to take the next step toward bringing it to market,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura Division. “We’re creating new space within the supercar realm, pushing the envelope beyond the conventional thinking about supercars – just like the original NSX.”

Customer order taking for the new NSX will begin on Feb. 25, 2016 at authorized NSX retailers, in concert with the launch of a vehicle configurator on Acura.com.  The configurator will be the first engagement point for customers interested in exploring the process of ordering a vehicle from an authorized NSX retailer and enthusiasts who want to configure their dream NSX. Once customers have customized their vehicle online, they can schedule an appointment with an authorized NSX retailer to finalize the order.

The 2017 NSX will be the first all-new Acura vehicle to be auctioned for the benefit of charitable organizations – certified to be the very first serial production NSX. The winner will be able to customize their NSX to their choosing.

“The very first production NSX will be such a special and historic vehicle, so we wanted to make sure we treat the sale of it in an equally special way,” said Ikeda.  “It will be available for purchase by anyone – anyone that is, who submits the highest bid for VIN number 001 at the world famous Barrett-Jackson auction. And we’re pleased to be able to support two incredible children’s charities, Camp Southern Ground and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, with the NSX.”

GTA V Mod Let’s You Customize the 2017 Acura NSX


Officially, we’re all still waiting to see the 2017 Acura NSX added to our favorite racing sim. We don’t know when you’ll get to test drive the new NSX in Gran Turismo or Forza, but if you’re a Grand Theft Auto V gamer, you can now access it with an unofficial PC mod.

In a YouTube video containing actual gameplay footage from Grand Theft Auto V, we see a model of the latest NSX ready for customization. The title says it’s a 2015, but other than the Acura badge being in a different location, it definitely has the design of the 2017 MY. There are a ton of mods to swap in and out – from splitters, hood air ducts, rear window louvers and wings, the combinations are endless.

The mod also let’s you take your creation through the streets of San Andreas with the usual Grand Theft Auto driving physics. That being said, don’t expect true handling characteristics or complain that you can’t feel the SH-AWD.

Acura will unveil the Acura Precision Concept at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 12 at 8:00 am ET, the brand announced today. Created by the Acura Design Studio in California, the Acura Precision Concept will help set the direction for future Acura design; in particular, the next generation of performance-luxury sedans.

“The Acura Precision Concept will signal the stronger and sharper focus of Acura styling on our core DNA we call ‘precision crafted performance’,” said Dave Marek, global creative director for the Acura brand. “It is our intention to more strongly express performance through design and the Acura Precision Concept will serve as the inspiration for the styling and proportion of the next-generation of Acura vehicles, especially for our sedans.”

Acura today also announced details of its launch plans for the next-generation NSX supercar, coming to market next spring. Acura is on track to post its fourth consecutive year of U.S. sales growth in 2015, and best sales since 2007, with sales up 6.9 percent through November.

Along with the 2017 Acura NSX and the ILX GT Race Car, Acura Canada also debuted a modified red TLX at this year’s Montreal International Auto Show. It’s simply named the “Tuner TLX”, and here are the details provided to us by Acura Canada:

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported January sales of 100,497 Honda and Acura vehicles, a decrease of 1.7 percent in an unusual month as the industry endured winter weather on both coasts along with two fewer selling days and one less weekend than January 2015. Honda Division set a new January record with 90,247 units sold; Honda car sales reached 50,812 while truck sales totaled 39,435 for the month. Acura sales totaled 10,250 with sedan sales of 3,570 and trucks reaching 6,680 units in January.

With a thick blanket of winter snow covering one of the Acura brand’s strongest markets in the Northeastern U.S., Acura sales dimmed slightly in January, but the performance of gateway model ILX defied the challenges.

Snapshot: High Mileage Acuras:

Combined, these Acuras have racked up over a million Miles. The 2005 Acura TSX owned by Josh Clymer has tallied 484,000 Miles(778,922 Kms), while Tyson Hugie’s 1994 Acura Legend is now at 541,000 Miles(870,655 Kms). The two cars posed for a quick snapshot at the Sand Hollow Reservoir in Southern Utah this past weekend.

American Honda Sets New February Record; New Civic and Honda Division Lead with Second Consecutive Monthly Records

    Honda Division sets new February benchmark on sales of 106,212 vehicles
    All-new 2016 Honda Civic sets a new monthly record for the second month in a row with sales up 31.7 percent; with all-new Civic Coupe set to go on sale mid-March
    Acura ILX, the brand’s entry point and most youthful model, was up 56.4 percent

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported record February sales of 118,985 Honda and Acura vehicles, an increase of 12.8 percent. Honda Division set a new February record with 106,212 units sold, up 14.9 percent; Honda car sales reached 57,267 while record February truck sales totaled 48,945 for the month. Acura sales totaled 12,773 with sedan sales of 4,683 and trucks reaching 8,090 units in February.

While overall sales were down slightly for February, strong sales of the ILX, the brand’s gateway model; the launch of the Acura NSX online vehicle configurator in late February and a refreshed MDX set to debut at the New York Auto Show this month portend a strong year as the Acura brand approaches its 30th anniversary in late March.

    ILX followed up on a strong January result, rising an impressive 56.4 percent on sales of 1,500 units in February.
    MDX, challenged by low inventory levels, was the brand’s best-selling model for the month with sales of 4,292 units in February, down 5.7 percent.

“As we approach the 30th anniversary of the Acura brand in March and the launch of the NSX this spring, it’s encouraging to see the same kind of excitement associated with the early days of the brand,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura division. “With a strong gateway model attracting new customers to the brand in the ILX, and an updated MDX about to debut at the New York auto show, it’s not simply cliché to say that the best is yet to come.”

It’s no secret that Acura plans to race the new NSX, they just haven’t announced how. A few sources have stated that Acura will be going the GT3 route with a full-season race debut as early as 2017.

We found this screenshot today of a camouflaged NSX fitted with a considerable amount of new aero. I think the title gives it away. We’re expecting an announcement soon, likely tomorrow at the New York International Auto Show.

Acura Unveils NSX GT3 Racecar in New York

    Twin turbocharged NSX supercar to campaign in North American competition starting 2017
    NSX slated to undergo homologation this fall as an FIA GT3 class racecar
    Racecar body to be built by the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, the exclusive manufacturing home to the all-new Acura NSX supercar; engine to be produced in Anna, Ohio

Acura took the wraps off a NSX GT3 racecar today at the 2016 New York International Auto Show, announcing its intention to campaign the twin-turbocharged NSX supercar in North America starting in 2017. The NSX is currently undergoing testing and slated for homologation as an FIA GT3 class racecar this fall.

The unveiled Acura NSX GT3 racecar featured custom bodywork and aero components including a large deck wing spoiler, underbody diffuser and enlarged hood vents for efficient engine cooling. The NSX GT3 will be powered by a 3.5-liter, 75-degree, twin turbocharged DOHC V-6 engine using the  same design specifications as the engine in the production 2017 Acura NSX, including the block, heads, valvetrain, crankshaft, pistons and dry sump lubrication system. The engine will be paired with a 6-speed, sequential-shift racing gearbox, delivering power to the rear wheels.

The NSX GT3 will utilize the production NSX’s ultra-rigid and lightweight multi-material body with aluminum-intensive space frame, which will be produced by the Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio, the exclusive manufacturing home for the new Acura NSX. Its twin turbocharged V-6 engine will also be manufactured in Ohio.

Initial development of the NSX GT3 was conducted by the company’s Japan race engineering arm with testing on race circuits in Europe and Japan. Additional development, testing and final homologation to FIA GT3 global racing specifications is currently being undertaken by the company’s North American race engineering group, Honda Performance Development (HPD), in Santa Clarita, California.

“The NSX was designed as a pinnacle expression of Acura Precision Crafted Performance, and we’re looking forward to proving out its ultimate performance capabilities in GT3 racing,” said Art St. Cyr, president of Honda Performance Development.  “We’ll be working with the NSX engineering teams in Ohio and Japan to bring our dream of a truly world-class new Acura NSX racecar to fruition.”

The Acura NSX GT3 car will join a rich legacy of Acura sports car racing campaigns and championships, including the 1991, 1992 and 1993 IMSA Camel Lights manufacturer and driver championships, and the 2009 American LeMans manufacturer, driver and team championships in both the LMP1 and LMP2 classes. Acura currently campaigns a pair of TLX GT cars with Real Time Racing in the Pirelli World Challenge.

The production 2017 Acura NSX launches this spring with serial production slated to begin in late April at the Performance Manufacturing Center. Customer order taking commenced on February 25, 2016, with the launch of the NSX online configurator at NSX.Acura.com.

Now that we’ve seen how the new Diamond Pentagon grille has been implemented onto the 2017 MDX, we took the current TLX into photoshop to see if we could do the same.

We sized the new grille to be similar to the existing one, adjusting the headlights and surrounding area accordingly. A simplified render with just these changes is attached in the gallery below.

At that point we had a decent render with the new grille in place, but we also wanted to see a more aggressive TLX. Luckily we created a “Type-S” TLX a few years ago and with a few minor revisions we were able to incorporate the design into our new render. So I guess you could consider this a 2018 Acura TLX with a sport package.

It’s not the first open-top render of the new NSX that we’ve seen, but it is one of the sharpest. Graphic Artist Theophilus Chin gives us two views of his Honda badged NSX roadster which will likely feature a power retractable soft top. A clean cut above the shoulders displaces the famous flying buttresses, but the rest of the car’s styling remains unchanged from the coupe.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported March sales of 138,221 Honda and Acura vehicles, an increase of 9.4 percent for the month. AHM trucks set a new March benchmark, gaining 5.7 percent on sales of 64,453 units. Honda Division sales were up 10.5 percent with 123,369 units sold in March; Honda car sales reached 68,314, up 13.7 percent, while truck sales totaled 55,055, a 6.9 percent gain for the month. Acura sales totaled 14,852 in March, gaining 1.2 percent. Acura sedans were up 4.8 percent on sales of 5,454 while Acura trucks reached 9,398 sales for the month.

Acura enjoyed a balanced sales month, with the refreshed RDX SUV posting a remarkable 34 percent gain so set a new March record to lead the brand’s sales gains, while Acura performance sedans maintained strong sales despite a luxury sedan market where competitors are relying heavily upon fleet sales and incentives.

    RDX showed renewed sales strength in March, leading Acura truck sales with a 34 percent gain on sales of 5,310 units.
    TLX continued to hold a strong sales position near the top of the mid-luxury sedan segment with 3,768 units sold in March, rising 9.9 percent despite aggressive competitor sales tactics.

“Acura posted a solid month even as we gained fresh momentum from the New York Auto Show debuts of the 2017 MDX and NSX GT3 racecar,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura division. “Our entire Acura team is excited by the market reaction to our new design direction and the preparation for delivery of the first all-new NSX.”
