Honda HR-V Sport debuts in Europe with VTEC Turbo

Earlier this year, Honda announced that the HR-V would be given an update for the 2019 model year in Europe, which includes a new engine option in the form of the Civic‘s 1.5 litre VTEC Turbo engine. This is now being presented in the HR-V Sport, a new variant that differs quite a bit from a regular HR-V beyond what’s under the bonnet.

We’ll focus on the obvious first. The HR-V Sport gets a 1.5 litre VTEC Turbo four-cylinder unit, which is paired with either a six-speed manual or CVT transmission. With the manual, peak horsepower of 182 PS arrives at 5,500 rpm, and at 6,000 rpm with the CVT.

The manual option also gets a higher torque figure of 240 Nm from 1,900 to 5,000 rpm, while the CVT gets just 220 Nm from 1,700 to 5,500 rpm. Here in Malaysia, the Honda HR-V is powered by a 1.8 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine with 142 PS and 172 Nm of torque, for comparison.

Honda says the new (and sportier) model is targeted at those who want a more dynamic driving experience, and so, the HR-V Sport gets ‘Performance Damper’ technology. Essentially, the car comes with adaptive roll bars at the front and rear to counteract the relative lateral and torsional movement through the chassis to keep it flatter through corners and enhance stability.

The variable ratio electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system is also unique to the new model, and is claimed to provide a steady response at on-, near-, and off-centre steering angles.

Mechanical changes aside, the HR-V Sport gets a high-gloss black chrome panel for its ‘Solid Wing Face’, plus a black honeycomb finish for the front grille garnish and fog lamp surrounds. Other styling revisions include a slim front splitter, side skirts, wheel arch mouldings and a more aggressive rear bumper – all with a black finish.

The model also comes with black door mirror caps, dual exhaust pipes,18-inch alloy wheels in a unique design, LED headlamps, black chrome tailgate garnish and smoked taillights. As for the interior, the seats follow a black and dark red colour scheme, coupled with black roof lining. Production of the HR-V Sport is slated to start in December 2018, with the first customer deliveries in spring 2019.

Overland Ridgeline Is Just One Of Honda’s Upcoming SEMA Offerings

With just a few days to go, automakers from around the world have been revealing their lineups for this year’s SEMA show. And Honda is among the latest.

Perhaps the most intriguing of the vehicles that the Japanese automaker has lined up for this year’s tuner expo is called the Honda Rugged Open Air Vehicle Concept, ostensibly taking the form of a Jeep Wrangler or Land Rover Defender-like off-roader.

Unfortunately, Honda isn’t telling us much more about “this unique concept vehicle,” but it has detailed the rest of its SEMA slate.

One is this rather splendid camper truck. The Ridgeline Overland Project is based on the Black Edition of Honda’s pickup truck, but features a Roof Nest pop-up top along with a slate of off-road equipment to let you sleep under the stars regardless of the proximity of your chosen camp site to paved roads. Developed with Jsport Performance Accessories, it features skid plates, off-road tires, a leveling kit, side steps, equipment racks, and even an onboard generator. What’s more, Honda says the Ridgeline Overland will “soon be available for purchase.”

Also on display will be the First Honda pedal car (styled after the Project 2&4 concept), a 2019 Insight sporting a range of accessories, a quintet of motorcycles, and a number of racers, including an F3 Americas single-seater, the Pilot that competed in this year’s Rebelle Rally, and two Civic Type Rs: one from the Pirelli World Challenge and another that ran in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.

You can check out some of them in the gallery below, but we’ll have to wait until Honda’s press conference on Tuesday to see the Rugger Open Air concept.

CR-V 2017- / Europe’s 2019 Honda CR-V Hybrid Gets Fully Detailed In 52 Photos

Europe’s 2019 Honda CR-V Hybrid Gets Fully Detailed In 52 Photos

Fresh from the 2019 CR-V Hybrid’s European debut at the Paris Motor Show, Honda has dropped full details about its first hybrid SUV ever sold on the continent.

The CR-V Hybrid packs Honda’s Multi Mode Drive technology (i-MMD) that combines two electric motors, an Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine, a lithium-ion battery, and a fixed-gear transmission. The automaker claims this setup provides “high levels of refinement, responsiveness, and efficiency.”

The 2.0-liter i-VTEC Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine produces 145 PS (143 hp) at 6,200 rpm and 175 Nm (129 lb-ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm. The propulsion electric motor delivers 134 kW (184 PS/181 hp) and 315 Nm (232 lb-ft) of torque. The motor’s values are identical with the total system output.

Available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive formats, the 2019 CR-V Hybrid offers fuel economy figures comparable to diesel-powered SUVs. After all, it’s not a coincidence that the Hybrid replaces the previously-available CR-V Diesel.

The FWD CR-V Hybrid averages 5.3 l/100 km (53.3 mpg UK) and emits 120 g/km CO2, while the AWD model returns 5.5 l/100 km (51.4 mpg UK) and 126 g/km CO2. The figures correspond to the WLTP-correlated NEDC test procedure. Honda’s latest AWD software disconnects the rear axle when for higher efficiency when rear-wheel torque not required.

Performance-wise, the gasoline-electric powertrain enables the FWD CR-V Hybrid to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 8.8 seconds (9.2 seconds for the AWD model). The top speed in both cases is 180 km/h (112 mph).

Honda claims off-road performance has improved as well thanks to the increased ground clearance. FWD models have a ride height of 182 mm (7.16 in) while AWD models offer 192 mm (7.56 in). Both figures represent increases of 27 mm (1.06 in) over the previous CR-V.

When it comes to driving, the i-MMD technology automatically switches between three modes: EV Drive, Hybrid Drive, and Engine Drive. In EV Drive, the lithium-ion battery supplies power to the electric propulsion motor directly. In Hybrid Drive, the engine supplies power to an electric generator motor, which in turn sends it to the electric propulsion motor. Finally, in Engine Drive the gasoline unit is connected directly to the wheels via a lock-up clutch.

The 2019 CR-V Hybrid is capable of pure-electric propulsion for distances of around 2 km (1.2 miles), depending on the driving condition and battery charge. Customers can already place orders for the new model, with deliveries expected in early 2019.

Honda Begins Production Of 2019 Passport In Alabama

Honda has started mass production of the new 2019 Passport SUV in their Alabama factory, ahead of a sales launch early next year.

The start of the new Passport’s production was celebrated by more than 1,500 associates at the facility, which will be the exclusive factory for the new Honda SUV.

Revealed last month at the LA Auto Show, the new Honda Passport will slot between the CR-V and the Pilot as the company’s more adventurous SUV in the range.

“The positive response to Passport really signals Honda is poised to compete in this segment,” said Lara Harrington, Chief Engineer and Passport Development Leader. “The Honda Passport is designed to bring a more personal, rugged and off-road SUV to our award- winning light truck lineup and we are all excited to see where this new product will take us.”

Power comes from Honda’s 3.5-liter V6 with 280hp and 262lb-ft of torque, paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The optional i-VTM4 all-wheel drive system features active torque vectoring to send up to 70 percent of the torque to the rear axle, and 100 percent of the torque to either the left or the right rear wheel.

Honda describes the new Passport as its “most rugged light truck yet”; ground clearance is up by 0.5 inches on FWD models and up by 1.1 inches on AWD models compared to the bigger Pilot, with which it shares most of its underpinnings.

2019 Honda Passport Is Here To Fill The Gap Between The CR-V And Pilot

Consumers can’t seem to get enough crossovers and Honda is happy to oblige as it has resurrected the Passport moniker on an all-new model which will slot in between the CR-V and Pilot.

Set to go on sale early next year, the 2019 Passport is larger and more rugged than the CR-V but sportier and more compact than the Pilot. As a result, the model promises to provide a unique blend of “on-road driving refinement and off-road adventure capability.”

Sporting a matte black grille that the echoes the Ridgeline, the Passport features a rugged exterior with black plastic body cladding, an increased ride height and standard 20-inch alloy wheels. The model also comes equipped with LED lighting units and a dual exhaust system with chrome tips.

Moving into the cabin, drivers will find a Pilot-like interior with a four-spoke steering wheel and a 7-inch display in the instrument cluster. The Passport also features a tri-zone automatic climate control system and a six-speaker audio system with a 5-inch display.

Higher-end variants pack on the features as the mid-level Passport EX-L has heated leather seats, a moonroof and an 8-inch Display Audio system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The model also boasts power front seats, HomeLink and a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines.

Touring and Elite variants go even further as they have GPS navigation, ambient interior lighting and a ten-speaker premium audio system.  Other highlights include heated rear seats, gloss black interior trim and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

In terms of practicality, the Passport has best-in-class passenger room and total interior space. There’s 41.2 cubic feet (1,166 liters) of room behind the rear seats, but that can be expanded to 77.9 cubic feet (2,205 liters) when the seats are folded down at the push of a button. If that’s not enough room, there’s an additional 2.5 cubic feet (70.8 liters) of storage space underneath the rear floor.

Power comes from a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 280 hp (208 kW / 283 PS) and 262 lb-ft (354 Nm) of torque. It is connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission which can be paired to an optional torque vectoring all-wheel drive system.

Since the Passport was designed to venture off-road, all models are equipped with an Intelligent Traction Management system which has normal, sand, snow and mud modes on all-wheel drive variants. Honda says the system helps to make the Passport “more capable off-road” than many other competing crossovers.

Speaking of capability, the Passport rides on Honda’s Global Light Truck platform and shares much of its underlying structure with the Pilot and Ridgeline. Thanks in part to this rugged construction, the Passport can tow up to 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg) when properly equipped.

2019 Honda Passport Is For Anyone Who Wants A Larger CR-V

Honda’s 2019 Passport crossover is scheduled to go on sale early next year. Until then, potential buyers can admire it in person by visiting the LA Auto Show, open November 30th until December 9th.

According to Honda, the Passport can provide a unique blend of “on-road driving refinement and off-road adventure capability.” It’s also been described as larger and more rugged than the CR-V, yet smaller and sportier than the Pilot.

Speaking of rugged looks, the Passport comes with black plastic body cladding, generous ground clearance, LED lighting units, a dual exhaust system and standard 20-inch alloy wheels. For the LA Auto Show, Honda went with sort of a dark themed spec, boasting a dark grey exterior, black wheels, black mirror covers, black accessories and tinted windows.

Plenty of decent onboard tech

The cabin of the Passport resembles that of the larger Pilot, while available features include an 8-inch infotainment display (on EX-L specs and higher), tri-zone automatic climate control, heated leather seats, a moonroof, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, power front seats, and a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines.

Opt for either a Touring or Elite variant and you gain ambient interior lighting, a ten-speaker audio system, heated rear seats, gloss black interior trim and 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

The Passport, which shares most of its underpinnings with the Pilot and Ridgeline, is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine, producing 280 HP (283 PS) and 262 lb-ft (354 Nm) of torque, channeled through a nine-speed automatic and an optional torque vectoring all-wheel drive system.
